Mri In Cancer: Improving Methodology For Measuring Vascular Properties And Assessing Radiation Treatment Effects In Brain, Chong Duan Aug 2017

Mri In Cancer: Improving Methodology For Measuring Vascular Properties And Assessing Radiation Treatment Effects In Brain, Chong Duan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Tumors cannot survive, progress and metastasize without recruiting new blood vessels. Vascular properties, including perfusion and permeability, provide valuable information for characterizing cancers and assessing therapeutic outcomes. Dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI is a non-invasive imaging technique that affords quantitative parameters describing the underlying vascular structure of tissue. To date, the clinical application of DCE-MRI has been hampered by the lack of standardized and validated quantitative modeling approaches for data analysis. From a therapeutic perspective, radiation therapy is a central component of the standard treatment for patients with cancer. Besides killing cancer cells, radiation also induces parenchymal and stromal changes in normal …

Determining The Molecular Mechanisms Of Huntington’S Disease Through Multi-Scale Modeling, Kiersten Ruff Aug 2017

Determining The Molecular Mechanisms Of Huntington’S Disease Through Multi-Scale Modeling, Kiersten Ruff

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Huntington’s disease (HD) is associated with a mutational CAG repeat expansion within exon 1 of the huntingtin (Htt) gene. Post-transcriptional processing leads to the generation of N-terminal Htt protein fragments (Htt-NTFs), including those that encompass exon 1 (Httex1). Within Httex1, the CAG-repeat encoded polyglutamine (polyQ) tract is flanked N-terminally by a 17-residue amphipathic stretch (N17) and C-terminally by a 50-residue proline rich (PR) domain. Htt-NTFs, including Httex1, are among the smallest fragments that recapitulate HD pathology in mouse models. However, the direct link between Htt-NTFs with polyQ expansions and neurodegeneration that leads to HD remains unresolved. Despite being a monogenic …

Sequence Determinants Of The Individual And Collective Behaviour Of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins, Alexander S. Holehouse Aug 2017

Sequence Determinants Of The Individual And Collective Behaviour Of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins, Alexander S. Holehouse

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Intrinsically disordered proteins and protein regions (IDPs) represent around thirty percent of the eukaryotic proteome. IDPs do not fold into a set three dimensional structure, but instead exist in an ensemble of inter-converting states. Despite being disordered, IDPs are decidedly not random; well-defined - albeit transient - local and long-range interactions give rise to an ensemble with distinct statistical biases over many length-scales. Among a variety of cellular roles, IDPs drive and modulate the formation of phase separated intracellular condensates, non-stoichiometric assemblies of protein and nucleic acid that serve many functions. In this work, we have explored how the amino …

Is There A Higher-Order Mechanism That Explains Performance Across Prediction Tasks?, Michelle Lisa Eisenberg Aug 2017

Is There A Higher-Order Mechanism That Explains Performance Across Prediction Tasks?, Michelle Lisa Eisenberg

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

People constantly make predictions about what will happen in the near future. People anticipate how other people around them will act, what other people will say, and what actions will help them achieve the greatest rewards. Because all of these behaviors are typically called prediction, it is easy to make the assumption that performance across all of these types of tasks is driven by the same underlying mechanism. However, there has been little investigation into whether the mechanisms underlying prediction are the same across multiple task modalities. Therefore, in the current study, 226 participants completed four types of tasks that …

Understanding Household, Network, And Organizational Drivers Of Adoption Of Cleaner Cooking Fuels In Rural India, Praveen Kumar Aug 2017

Understanding Household, Network, And Organizational Drivers Of Adoption Of Cleaner Cooking Fuels In Rural India, Praveen Kumar

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Adoption of evidence-based cleaner cooking systems such as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a crucial first step in eventually providing a sustainable solution for household air pollution. To promote adoption of LPG in below poverty line households, we require evidence-based implementation strategies. For these strategies to be feasible and scalable, they need to be grounded in a thorough understanding of the household, network, and organizational level drivers of LPG adoption. However, systematic research on adoption of LPG by poor communities is still lacking. The overall objective of the study was to develop a better understanding about new insights on the reach …

Temperature-Modulated Expression Of Allometric Respiration Strategies Supports A Metabolic Scaling Rule, Chet F. Rakocinski, Kelsey Burns Gillam Aug 2017

Temperature-Modulated Expression Of Allometric Respiration Strategies Supports A Metabolic Scaling Rule, Chet F. Rakocinski, Kelsey Burns Gillam

Faculty Publications

A model based on the mass-specific oxygen consumption rate of the tolerant polychaete, Capitella telata, related meaningfully to a novel metabolic scaling rule as applied to the infaunal size spectrum. Depending on temperature, C. telataexpressed divergent oxyregulating or oxyconforming strategies relative to oxygen availability. A non-linear response surface fitted to the allometric exponents of a family of VO2 curves for 12 treatment combinations of DO saturation and temperature was used to project oxygen consumption rates across the infaunal size spectrum. Plasticity in respiration strategies was evident, based on four simulated dynamic 32 d oxygen-temperature exposure scenarios and …

Review Of Training Principles For Flight Training In Aircraft Or Simulator, Stefan Kleinke

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

In human-performance-driven fields such as the social and behavioral sciences and education, there is a particular risk for a disconnect between current research and applied practice. Often, new findings require policy changes and workforce re-education before being applied in a meaningful way. Therefore, a continuous need for practitioner professional development and continuation training exists to ensure informed practices. This presentation is motivated by these needs and aims to help flight training professionals to make informed decisions when designing and conducting flight training events. Based on a conceptual framework of cognitive and behavioral theories in learning, a variety of common training …

Fostering Cultures Of Encounter: Framing Papal Teaching On Dialogue As Multi-Track Peacebuilding, Maria Power, Christopher Hrynkow Aug 2017

Fostering Cultures Of Encounter: Framing Papal Teaching On Dialogue As Multi-Track Peacebuilding, Maria Power, Christopher Hrynkow

The Journal of Social Encounters

This article demonstrates that there is a rough parallel between (1) Diamond and McDonald’s (1996) notion of multi-track diplomacy and (2) the four levels of inter-religious dialogue identified by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, along with two other levels discerned within papal teaching by the authors. Diamond and McDonald expanded the political science concept of dual-track diplomacy and, in the process, helped to buttress the legitimacy of peace studies discourse in that discipline. Comparably, this article seeks to introduce papal teaching on dialogue framed in terms of multi-track peacebuilding. As a result, it solidifies a latent resonance between Catholic …

Toward An Integral Catholic Peacebuilding, Gerard Powers

The Journal of Social Encounters

Among the many under-examined aspects of Catholic approaches to peacebuilding are its ecclesiological and practical dimensions. This article suggests that an Integral Catholic Peacebuilding calls for deepening the Catholic community’s commitment to peacebuilding as a vocation, especially by reinvigorating the lay vocation; cultivating distinctively Catholic approaches to peacebuilding while engaging inclusively, especially through strategic approaches to ecumenical and inter-religious engagement; and promoting greater integration by examining the interconnections among disparate factors and issues, and giving priority to effective collaboration among vertical and horizontal levels, and different sectors of the Catholic community

Dual Modality Code Explanations For Novices: Unexpected Results, Briana B. Morrison Aug 2017

Dual Modality Code Explanations For Novices: Unexpected Results, Briana B. Morrison

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

The research in both cognitive load theory and multimedia principles for learning indicates presenting information using both diagrams and accompanying audio explanations yields better learning performance than using diagrams with text explanations. While this is a common practice in introductory programming courses, often called "live coding," it has yet to be empirically tested. This paper reports on an experiment to determine if auditory explanations of code result in improved learning performance over written explanations. Students were shown videos explaining short code segments one of three ways: text only explanations, auditory only explanations, or both text and auditory explanations, thus replicating …

2017 – The Development Of The Land Tenure And Water Systems In California And Specifically In The Salinas Valley Groundwater Basin [Draft] Aug 2017

2017 – The Development Of The Land Tenure And Water Systems In California And Specifically In The Salinas Valley Groundwater Basin [Draft]

Related Research and Documents

Beginning with the Aboriginal era through the Spanish, Mexican and United States eras, maps and governmental documents reflect the state of knowledge concerning California (and the Salinas Valley) along with the driving needs and policies that determined how water was used and managed. By examining the maps, it is possible to determine the state of knowledge in Europe (and later in the United States) as it related to the physical and geographical attributes of California prior to colonization and subsequently throughout the Spanish and Mexican periods. Governmental documents provide a window to how land was used and granted during the …

Carotid Body-Mediated Chemoreflex Drive In The Setting Of Low And High Output Heart Failure., Rodrigo Del Rio, David C. Andrade, Camilo Toledo, Hugo S. Diaz, Claudia Lucero, Alexis Arce-Alvarez, Noah J. Marcus, Harold D. Schultz

Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology

Enhanced carotid body (CB) chemoreflex function is strongly related to cardiorespiratory disorders and disease progression in heart failure (HF). The mechanisms underlying CB sensitization during HF are not fully understood, however previous work indicates blood flow per se can affect CB function. Then, we hypothesized that the CB-mediated chemoreflex drive will be enhanced only in low output HF but not in high output HF. Myocardial infarcted rats and aorto-caval fistulated rats were used as a low output HF model (MI-CHF) and as a high output HF model (AV-CHF), respectively. Blood flow supply to the CB region was decreased only in …

The Mechanism Of Alpha Lipoic Acid On Reducing The Mda Level And Mcp-1 Expression In Endothelial Dysfunction Of Hypercholesterolemia Rat (Rattus Norvegicus) Model, Dewi Perwito Sari, Imam Susilo, Junaidi Khotib

Folia Medica Indonesiana

Endothelial dysfunction is an initial condition of atherosclerosis and other vascular diseases where one of the risk factors is hypercholesterolemia. Blood cholesterol levels is associated with an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The increasing of ROS production can cause increased oxidative stress which in turn resulting in endothelial dysfunction. Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is one of the antioxidant compound that has been developed and studied. In this study we found that the use of ALA in Rattus norvegicus rats signifficantly lower the total cholesterol levels at dose 60 mg/kgBW (p=0.020). ALA also inhibit the expression of …

BACKGROUND: Many patients with primary biliary cholangitis have an inadequate response to first-line therapy with ursodeoxycholic acid. Seladelpar is a potent, selective agonist for the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-delta (PPAR-δ), which is implicated in bile acid homoeostasis. This first-in-class study evaluated the anti-cholestatic effects and safety of seladelpar in patients with an inadequate response to ursodeoxycholic acid. METHODS: The study was a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2 trial of patients with alkaline phosphatase of at least 1·67 times the upper limit of normal (ULN) despite treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid. Patients, recruited at 29 sites in North America and Europe, were randomly …

Aggression, Impulsivity, And Symptom Severity: An Examination Of Risk Factors For Violent Behaviors, Melissa Charfadi Aug 2017

Aggression, Impulsivity, And Symptom Severity: An Examination Of Risk Factors For Violent Behaviors, Melissa Charfadi

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to explore the relationship between psychopathology, aggression, and impulsivity. Two hypotheses were derived from the existing scientific literature: First, as a validity check, we anticipated that levels of psychopathology would be related to both aggression and impulsivity (as previously reported data suggests). Second, we anticipated that impulsivity would moderate the relationship between overall symptom severity and aggression. Finally, we constructed exploratory regression models to examine the contribution of specific types of impulsivity in the prediction of specific acts of aggression across BSI symptom groupings. Data was collected using Rowan University undergraduate students that completed an in-person battery …

Novel Influences Of Il-10 On Cns Inflammation Revealed By Integrated Analyses Of Cytokine Networks And Microglial Morphology., Warren D. Anderson, Andrew D. Greenhalgh, Aditya Takwale, Samuel David, Rajanikanth Vadigepalli

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Coordinated interactions between cytokine signaling and morphological dynamics of microglial cells regulate neuroinflammation in CNS injury and disease. We found that pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression in vivo showed a pronounced recovery following systemic LPS. We performed a novel multivariate analysis of microglial morphology and identified changes in specific morphological properties of microglia that matched the expression dynamics of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNFα. The adaptive recovery kinetics of TNFα expression and microglial soma size showed comparable profiles and dependence on anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 expression. The recovery of cytokine variations and microglial morphology responses to inflammation were negatively regulated by IL-10. Our novel …
