Many of us would agree that Senator J. William Fulbright’s vision of “a world with a little more knowledge and a little less conflict” will feature healthy ecosystems, appreciation of cultural diversity, and of course, delicious food. However, the world has been moving in the wrong direction over the past century. Today, 75% of the world’s plant food is made up of only 12 species. As of 2010, three (rice, maize, and wheat) provided nearly 60 percent of the calories and proteins that humans derive from plants (F.A.O 2010, 1999) and this trend continues (Khoury et al. 2014). This dramatic …

Characterizing The Gender Differences Of Multidrug-Resistance Peptide (Mrp) Transporter Expression In Mouse Blood-Brain Interfaces, Katiria M. Flores
Characterizing The Gender Differences Of Multidrug-Resistance Peptide (Mrp) Transporter Expression In Mouse Blood-Brain Interfaces, Katiria M. Flores
Doctoral Dissertations
The choroid plexus (CP) and blood-brain barrier (BBB) control the movement of several drugs and endogenous compounds between the brain and systemic circulation. The multidrug resistance associated protein (Mrp) efflux transporters form part of these barriers. Several Mrp transporters are positively regulated by the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor (Nrf2) in liver. The Mrps, Nrf2 and Nrf2-dependent genes are cytoprotective and our aim was to examine basal gender differences in expression of Mrp transporters, Nrf2 and Nrf2-dependent genes (Nqo1 and Ho-1) in the brain-barriers. Previous studies have shown higher expression of Mrp1, Mrp2 and Mrp4 in female mouse liver …

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
The p53-mediated nucleolar stress response associated with inhibition of ribosomal RNA transcription was previously shown to potentiate killing of tumor cells. Here, we asked whether targeting of ribosome biogenesis can be used as the basis for selective p53-dependent cytoprotection of nonmalignant cells. Temporary functional inactivation of the 60S ribosome assembly factor Bop1 in a 3T3 cell model markedly increased cell recovery after exposure to camptothecin or methotrexate. This was due, at least in part, to reversible pausing of the cell cycle preventing S phase associated DNA damage. Similar cytoprotective effects were observed after transient shRNA-mediated silencing of Rps19, but not …
Reading Speculative Futures In A Post-Truth World, Rachel Webb Jekanowski
Reading Speculative Futures In A Post-Truth World, Rachel Webb Jekanowski
The Goose
Faced with the threat of a “post-truth” world and a widening chasm of exchange between climate change deniers and environmentalists, I argue that future-orientated literary and media speculative fictions—which I term “speculative futures”—offer a means of building lines of communication across social and political divisions. This thought piece on “The Environmental Humanities in a Post-Truth World” mediates upon the potentiality of speculative futures as theory, social bridge-building, and pedagogical tool. Speculative fictions (especially those that address environmental justice, and anti-colonial and feminist politics) use storytelling and future imaginaries to challenge political falsehoods and imagine more ecological, de-colonized futures.

Rationale: Ultrasound-mediated opening of the Blood-Brain Barrier(BBB) has shown exciting potential for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease(AD). Studies in transgenic mouse models have shown that this approach can reduce plaque pathology and improve spatial memory. Before clinical translation can occur the safety of the method needs to be tested in a larger brain that allows lower frequencies be used to treat larger tissue volumes, simulating clinical situations. Here we investigate the safety of opening the BBB in half of the brain in a large aged animal model with naturally occurring amyloid deposits.
Methods: Aged dogs naturally accumulate plaques and show …

Development And Application Of Advanced Econometric Models For Exploring Activity-Travel Behavior, Annesha Enam
Development And Application Of Advanced Econometric Models For Exploring Activity-Travel Behavior, Annesha Enam
Doctoral Dissertations
Historically, transportation planning relied on aggregate, trip-based procedures, namely, four-step modeling, for modeling travel demand. The aggregate approaches served well when the capacity oriented policies were of primary interest. However, in the last few decades, with the growing demand for travel and the increasing externalities (e.g. congestion, energy implications, pollution), there is a widespread acknowledgement that capacity oriented approach to transportation planning is unsustainable. Instead, the focus of the transportation planners has shifted towards sustainable demand management strategies wherein the idea is to alter existing behaviors and promote new behaviors such that demand for travel can be met while also …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Euroglyphus maynei is a house dust mite commonly found in homes worldwide and is the source of allergens that sensitize and induce allergic reactions in humans. It is the source of species-specific allergens as well as allergens that are cross-reactive with the allergens from house dust mites Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus, and the ectoparasitic scabies mite Sarcoptes scabiei. The genomics, proteomics and molecular biology of E. maynei and its allergens have not been as extensively investigated as those of D. farinae, D. pteronyssinus, and S. scabiei where natural and recombinant allergens from these species have been characterized. Until now, …

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Technology facilitates advances in learning and drives learning paradigms. One recent innovation is Twitch™, an online streaming platform often used for video game tutorials but also enables amateur online instruction (Hamilton, Garretson, & Kerne, 2014)). Twitch represents a unique learning paradigm that is not perfectly represented in previous technologies because of its “ground-up” evolution and the opportunity for novice instructors to educate mass audiences in real-time over the Internet while enabling interaction between teachers and learners and among learners. The purpose of this research is to empirically examine the efficacy of Twitch as a learning platform by manipulating each of …

Spread Of Dermacentor Reticulatus Is Associated With The Loss Of Forest Area, Ewa J. Mierzejewska, Agustín Estrada-Peña, Anna Bajer
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Changes in tick distribution and abundance are among the main drivers of the (re)emergence of transmitted pathogens. We aimed to uncover the reasons of the reported spread of Dermacentor reticulatus in Poland using a variety of proxies of environmental features, ground-measured temperature and remotely-sensed data of temperature and vegetation. Ground-measured temperature was recorded in 2013–2014, in sites where D. reticulatus presence (n = 16) or absence (n = 16) was confirmed. We specifically aimed to test whether changes in phenology of vegetation and the length of the growing season were correlated with field-derived data regarding the presence/absence of D. reticulatus …
Riparian Impacts To Stream Water Quality Across Spatial Scales, David J. Rosa
Riparian Impacts To Stream Water Quality Across Spatial Scales, David J. Rosa
Doctoral Dissertations
This research contributes new knowledge to two major challenges: 1) up-scaling water quality results from riparian treatment plots to larger watersheds and 2) determining if a short-rotation woody crop (SRWC) can be an effective riparian buffer for treating agricultural nonpoint source pollution. An exhaustive literature review was conducted to provide detailed insight into the methods of scaling, the associated mathematical equations, and their application to the problem of predicting water quality. Dimensional analysis was identified as an underutilized but promising technique for water quality scaling. Dimensional analysis was used to predict total phosphorus (TP) concentrations across heterogenous watersheds ranging from …

A Literature Review On Risk Sources And Resilience Factors In Agri-Food Supply Chains, Guoqing Zhao, Shaofeng Liu, Carmen Lopez
Plymouth Business School
Risk and uncertainty are ubiquitous and varied in agri-food supply chains. As environment volatility increases, only having capabilities to manage agri-food supply chain risks may not be enough, resilience factors also need to be integrated into daily operations. This paper undertakes a systematic literature review on risks sources and resilience factors in agri-food supply chains. A five-stage systematic review methodology has been followed. The findings suggest that agri-food supply chains are highly vulnerable to various risks due to its unique characteristics of products. Main risk sources include antibiotics resistance, weather related risks and natural disasters, policy and institutional risks, and …

It's All Downhill From Here: How The Nation's Dispute With Clean Water Act Jurisdiction Is Solved, Spencer H. Newman
Environmental and Earth Law Journal (EELJ)
What makes the United States one of the most prosperous and safest nations in the modern world? Perhaps it is the durable economy, the strong military force, or the Constitutional protections. What most Americans take for granted, however, is something people in many nations base their entire lives around: safe, clean water. Promulgated in 1972, the original Clean Water Act has been opposed and amended over the course of forty years. No provision, however, has been as hotly contested as the § 404 program for “dredge and fill” permits. Specifically, this section led to divisions on what constitutes “water” that …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 10(5): 690-701, 2017. High levels of endurance training have been associated with potentially negative health outcomes and addictive-like symptoms such as exercise in the presence of injury and higher levels of impulsivity. This pilot study examined the relationships among self-report measures of addictive symptoms related to exercise and behavioral and neural measures of impulsivity in endurance runners. We hypothesized endurance runners would have increased preference for immediate rewards and greater activation of cognitive control regions when making decisions involving delayed rewards. Twenty endurance runners (at least 20 miles/week) were recruited to undergo measures of self-report …
