Respectability & The Quest For Citizenship, Angela M. Banks
Respectability & The Quest For Citizenship, Angela M. Banks
Brooklyn Law Review
Within the United States there is a long history of immigration and citizenship law and policy being shaped by the idea that certain immigrant populations are a threat to American society. Such ideas justified the Alien and Sedition Acts, the Chinese Exclusion Act, the enactment of new deportation grounds in 1917, and the adoption of national origin quotas in 1924. The repeal or revision of these laws has required discrediting the immigrant threat narratives justifying them. Immigrants have done this by demonstrating their respectability—their commitment and adherence to mainstream American values, norms, and practices. Scholars in the humanities and the …

Weekly: A Design System That Combines Graphic And Interaction Design For Scheduling Student Events, Kaige Liu
Theses
A common need for students is scheduling events efficiently. Students using various methods for scheduling events. Some prefer a physical paper calendar, while others prefer to use a mobile device. Several problems can occur when students schedule events. For example, it may not be clear when a student’s free time periods are, especially when trying to meet with a team or group members. Also, user’s preferences are different on how they schedule events.
To address the issue of inefficiency in scheduling events, a design system that focuses on print, interaction, and user experience design is created. The design system includes …

Evaluation Of Cadmium Bioaccumulaiton Of Periphyton And Aquatic Invertebrates Within Tributaries Of The Buffalo National River, Jacob Rollins Mccauley
Evaluation Of Cadmium Bioaccumulaiton Of Periphyton And Aquatic Invertebrates Within Tributaries Of The Buffalo National River, Jacob Rollins Mccauley
Student Theses and Dissertations
The Rush Mining District, located along the Buffalo River in Arkansas, has a significant history of metal-mining operations. The tails and spoils of these operations deposit heavy amounts of raw ore into streams, including the deposition of cadmium, a minor constituent. Periphyton and invertebrate samples from two creeks within the Rush Mining District were measured for cadmium. Additionally, two creeks with no history of mining were sampled. Periphyton samples from mining sites had significantly higher concentrations of cadmium than samples collected at control sites. Invertebrate samples were classified into trophic levels before analysis. Invertebrate samples collected at treatment sites only …

To assess miRNA evolution across the Drosophila genus, we analyzed several billion small RNA reads across 12 fruit fly species. These data permit comprehensive curation of species- and clade-specific variation in miRNA identity, abundance, and processing. Among well-conserved miRNAs, we observed unexpected cases of clade-specific variation in 5′ end precision, occasional antisense loci, and putatively noncanonical loci. We also used strict criteria to identify a large set (649) of novel, evolutionarily restricted miRNAs. Within the bulk collection of species-restricted miRNAs, two notable subpopulations are splicing-derived mirtrons and testes-restricted, recently evolved, clustered (TRC) canonical miRNAs. We quantified miRNA birth and death …

The Impact Of Democratization And International Exposure To Indonesian Counter-Terrorism, Ali Abdullah Wibisono
The Impact Of Democratization And International Exposure To Indonesian Counter-Terrorism, Ali Abdullah Wibisono
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
This article explains the influence of the United States of America to Indonesian counter-terrorism. Two aspects of counter-terrorism are explained: effectiveness and adherence to human rights values. It argues that America’s emphasis on the need to forge security cooperation in responding to terrorism facilitated human rights values to be adopted as justification of counter-terrorism, rather than a balancer to its effectiveness. Indonesia’s cooperation with the U.S in counter-terrorism has facilitated the growth of the restitutive or kinetic measures, but neglects a strengthening of political leadership over institutional development of counter-terrorism. The latter can be judged from the absence of policy-evaluation, …
Equity Extraterritoriality, S. Nathan Park
Equity Extraterritoriality, S. Nathan Park
Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law
Territoriality is a foundational principle of international order, and U.S. laws have always operated on a territorial basis. However, when U.S. jurisprudence speaks of extraterritorial application of its laws, it is usually assessing whether the legislature or the court has jurisdiction over persons, properties and conducts outside of the territorial borders of the United States. This paper argues that such a conception of the extraterritoriality doctrine only reveals half of the picture, because U.S. courts may indirectly apply U.S. law beyond U.S. borders through extraterritorial court orders without relying on extraterritorial jurisdiction. I term such exercise of extraterritorial power "Equity …

Lyme Disease Ecology: Effects Of Habitat And Hosts On The Density And Distribution Of Borrelia Burgdorferi-Infected Ixodes Scapularis, Megan Ainsley Linske
Doctoral Dissertations
The research discussed in this dissertation examined host and habitat composition in Connecticut and their effect on the ecology of Lyme disease. Previous studies on management strategies sought a one-size-fits-all solution. However, Connecticut may require its own implementation of management strategies supported by research executed in its respective environment. Therefore, a novel approach that addresses the key components of a particular habitat, in this case Connecticut’s northern hardwood forests with an invasive plant understory, may yield better results than a “silver bullet” solution produced by a model or conducted in a different geographic location.
My research is conducted in Connecticut …
An Arctic Peril: The Pitfalls And Potential Of A Fragmentary Polar Law, Erik Vande Stouwe
An Arctic Peril: The Pitfalls And Potential Of A Fragmentary Polar Law, Erik Vande Stouwe
Brooklyn Journal of International Law
As Arctic ice coverage recedes in the face of rising global temperatures, the Arctic Ocean is rapidly becoming a promising frontier over which coastal nations vie. Even as indigenous peoples reckon with ecological catastrophe, the promise of ice-free summers is drawing global shipping giants to invest in sea routes over the northern coasts of Canada and Russia. Hydrocarbon extraction and deep-sea mining interests are clamoring to develop newly accessible regions of the high north, and fishing trawlers are chasing increasingly elusive fisheries further north with the warming Arctic waters. Against this backdrop, tourists on diesel-hungry cruise ships are rushing to …

Human olfactory bulb neural stem cells (OBNSCs) are multipotent cells that are capable of differentiation into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes. In the present study, we investigated the ability of human OBNSCS to differentiate into oligodendrocytes using RT-PCR and immunocytochemistry. In the presence of fetal calf serum, all-trans retinoic acid (RA), triiodothyronine (T3), and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), OBNSCS were differentiated into oligodendrocytes precursors as evidenced by induction and repression of oligodendrocytes chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan (NG2) and nestin genes, respectively. These finding were confirmed at the protein level using fluorescent immunocytochemistry (FICC) according to standard protocol. Taken together, the present study …

Mansoura Veterinary Medical Journal
Myxosporidiosisis a protozoan parasitic fish disease that causes damages to fish organs and might eventually end with mortalities and deterioration of meat quality of the affected fish. The presence of parasitic infestation is usually accompanied with the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that produces extra damage to host organs and inactivation of antioxidant defense system that increase the intensity of parasitic infestation. Recently, the response of the infested tissue to oxidative stress is varieddepending on the type of parasite; therefore the use of oxidative stress markers as indicator for myxobolus infestation is relevant. In the present study, Oreochromis …

Antioxidant Trace Elements And Oxidative Stress Status In Dairy Cattle Suffering From Mastitis, Medhat Nassif, Hussam Ibrahim, Heba Moharam
Mansoura Veterinary Medical Journal
Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary glands caused by several pathogens. Reactive oxygen species are natural end products of the intensive cellular metabolism. Oxidative stress occurs when there is a disturbance of homeostasis causing inflammation of the mammary gland. This study was performed to evaluate blood antioxidant profile and trace elements in dairy cows with clinical mastitis. For this aim, venous blood samples were collected from 116 cows (100 mastitic, 16 control). In cows with clinical mastitis, there was a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the clinical index score compared with control group. Biochemically, there was a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in super oxide dismutase, catalase and total antioxidant capacity as well as in the level of zinc. However, there was a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the levels of malondialdehyde and glutathione reductase as well as in that of copper. The results of the current study indicate that the body antioxidant defense system was compromised in dairy cows with clinical mastitis creating a state of oxidative stress.
