We investigated the efficacy of liposomal gentamicin formulations of different surface charges against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella oxytoca. The liposomal gentamicin formulations were prepared by the dehydration-rehydration method, and their sizes and zeta potential were measured. Gentamicin encapsulation efficiency inside the liposomal formulations was determined by microbiologic assay, and stability of the formulations in biologic fluid was evaluated for a period of 48h. The minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration were determined, and the in vitro time kill studies of the free form of gentamicin and liposomal gentamicin formulations were performed. The activities of liposomal gentamicin in preventing …

Clarification And Capture Of A Cho-Derived Monoclonal Antibody Through Flocculation And Aex Processes, Rimenys J. Carvalho, Leda Castilho
Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing III
Flocculants have been widely used in the food and chemical industry, as well as in wastewater clarification. More recently, studies have shown the applicability of these agents in the clarification of mammalian cell suspensions as an alternative e.g. to centrifugation and microfiltration1,2. Flocculants present several advantages such as low cost, process simplicity and facility to run under continuous mode. On the other hand, some flocculants have shown toxicity and thus their total clearance has to be demonstrated. In this work, the cationic flocculants chitosan and poly diallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) have been investigated and compared for the clarification of suspensions of …

Development Of A Scale Down Toolbox For Perfusion Process Development, Jean-Marc Bielser
Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing III
Background and novelty Merck KGaA has a legacy of perfusion manufacturing processes with several commercial products that were developed in the 90s. These processes were developed for adherent cell systems. Since then, with the advances in media design and the monoclonal antibody driven portfolio, development efforts have been focusing on fed-batch with suspended cells. Recently and as many players in the biomanufacturing industry, Merck is working on the development of an integrated continuous process. To support this effort a process development platform for perfusion cell culture needs to be developed. Process development for fed-batch is clearly defined and scale down …

The Reliability And Effectiveness Of A Radar-Based Animal Detection System, Marcel P. Huijser, Elizabeth R. Fairbank, Fernanda D. Abra
CESTiCC Project Reports
This document contains data on the reliability and effectiveness of an animal detection system along U.S. Hwy 95 near Bonners Ferry, Idaho. The system uses a Doppler radar to detect large mammals (e.g., deer and elk) when they approach the highway. The system met most of the suggested minimum norms for reliability. The total time the warning signs were activated was at most 90 seconds per hour, and likely substantially less. Animal detection systems are designed to detect an approaching animal. After an animal has been detected, warning signs are activated which allow drivers to respond. Results showed that 58.1–67.9% …
Branding In Today's Society: I Do Care, Kayla A. Flaute
Branding In Today's Society: I Do Care, Kayla A. Flaute
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
For this assignment, I was required to critique a literary work by Kathleen Norris, a best selling poet and essayist. I chose her essay called "I Don't Care," which outlines that people should not care about what brands they buy. However, I believe there are several reasons for people to care about what brands they buy. That being said, I picked three of the most important reasons why people should care and used these reasons to critique Norris' essay.

The Common Good Frankenstein Textual Analysis And Argument Essay, Julia G. Bonfiglio
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
My writing process for this particular essay was fairly simple and straightforward. I began by reading the prompt and writing notes on my teacher's specific directions. I then went to the library, where I reviewed my notes and the directions. Next, I began to write a brief rough draft which I later printed and gave to my teacher for review. Finally, I took all of her suggestions for improvement into consideration and completed my essay.

Adapting To The Changing World Of Biotechnology: Syngenta Ag Mir162 Corn Litigation As Regulation By Litigation, Paul Goeringer
Texas A&M Law Review
Agriculture has relied on plant breeding to improve genetics since the first domestication of agricultural plants 10,000 years ago. More recently, Gregor Mendel and his hybridization experiments on peas led to what we know as modern genetics. The rise in recombinantDNA technology has opened up many possibilities in plant breeding, including Roundup Ready technology and crop varieties designed to resist a number of pests. At the same time, governments and the private sector have sought to institute regulations for handling the releases of new biotechnology to ensure the technologies will have limited environmental impacts and provide safe foods to the …

The Gmo/Ge Debate, Joanna K. Sax
Texas A&M Law Review
We live longer and healthier lives because advances in science create easier and better ways to sustain and survive. Society has an intricate relationship with biotechnology. Vaccines save lives. Fluoridated water decreases dental issues. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections. Nuclear power is a form of clean energy. With any emerging technology, the benefits do not exist in a vacuum, thus, negative consequences result as well. Our widespread uses of antibiotics are creating antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Our research into nuclear energy also facilitated the creation of nuclear bombs. Perhaps it is human nature to use scientific advances for good and for …

Recognizing Challenges And Opportunities In The Quest To End Hunger, Jennifer Williams Zwagerman
Texas A&M Law Review
As an attorney and professor that does not focus on intellectual property law, I was a bit apprehensive about providing a keynote address for a Symposium focusing on “Agriculture, Intellectual Property, and Feeding the World in the 21st Century.” As I thought about this topic, knowing that there were other speakers who would focus more on the IP issues and technical aspects of various topics, I kept coming back to the importance of technology as we worktowards the goal of feeding the world, and the many ways in which innovation plays a role in meeting that goal. It also brought …
Upper Cretaceous Planktic Foraminiferal Biostratigraphy, Marius Dan Georgescu
Upper Cretaceous Planktic Foraminiferal Biostratigraphy, Marius Dan Georgescu
Studia UBB Geologia
A high-resolution biostratigraphical zonation based on planktic foraminifera is developed for the Upper Cretaceous. It consists of twenty-five biozones defined with the aid of serial and coiled planktic foraminiferal taxa and presents the highest resolution developed with planktic foraminifera for this Series. All the index species used in biozonation are part of the practical classification associated with the evolutionary classification. The new biozonation represents a first in using data directly derived from the Theory of Evolution and its evolutionary classification extension in an application of paleontology such as biostratigraphy. By this the Theory of Evolution becomes a direct provider of …
Infectious Disease And The Diversification Of The Human Genome, Jessica F. Brinkworth
Infectious Disease And The Diversification Of The Human Genome, Jessica F. Brinkworth
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
The human immune system is under great pathogen-mediated selective pressure. A combination of divergent infectious disease pathogenesis across human populations, and the overrepresentation of “immune genes” in genomic regions with signatures of positive selection suggests that pathogens have significantly altered the human genome. However, important features of the human immune system can confound searches for and interpretations of signatures of pathogen-mediated evolution. Immune system redundancy, immune gene pleiotropy, host ability to acquire immunity and alter the immune repertoire of their offspring through “priming”, and host microbiome complicate evolutionary interpretations of host- pathogen interactions. The overall promiscuity and sensitivity of the …

2010-2019 OA Pubs
We have developed a serologically based immunophenotyping approach to study Onchocerca volvulus (Ov) population diversity. Using genomic sequence data and polymerase chain reaction-based genotyping, we identified nonsynonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes of 16 major immunogenic Ov proteins: Ov-CHI-1/Ov-CHI-2, Ov16, Ov-FAR-1, Ov-CPI-1, Ov-B20, Ov-ASP-1, Ov-TMY-1, OvSOD1, OvGST1, Ov-CAL-1, M3/M4, Ov-RAL-1, Ov-RAL-2, Ov-ALT-1, Ov-FBA-1, and Ov-B8. We assessed the immunoreactivity of onchocerciasis patient sera (n = 152) from the Americas, West Africa, Central Africa, and East Africa against peptides derived from 10 of these proteins containing SNPs. Statistically significant variation in immunoreactivity among the regions was seen in SNP-containing peptides …

Hundreds of thousands of bats are killed annually by colliding with wind turbines in the U.S., yet little is known about factors causing variation in mortality across wind energy facilities. We conducted a quantitative synthesis of bat collision mortality with wind turbines by reviewing 218 North American studies representing 100 wind energy facilities. This data set, the largest compiled for bats to date, provides further evidence that collision mortality is greatest for migratory tree-roosting species (Hoary Bat [Lasiurus cinereus], Eastern Red Bat [Lasiurus borealis], Silver-haired Bat [Lasionycteris noctivagans]) and from July to October. Based …

Mutations in FOXC1 and PITX2 constitute the most common causes of ocular anterior segment dysgenesis (ASD), and confer a high risk for secondary glaucoma. The genetic causes underlying ASD in approximately half of patients remain unknown, despite many of them being screened by whole exome sequencing. Here, we performed whole genome sequencing on DNA from two affected individuals from a family with dominantly inherited ASD and glaucoma to identify a 748-kb deletion in a gene desert that contains conserved putative PITX2 regulatory elements. We used CRISPR/Cas9 to delete the orthologous region in zebrafish in order to test the pathogenicity of …

Cancer immunotherapy is becoming a routine treatment modality in the oncology clinic, in spite of the fact that it is a relatively nascent field. The challenge in developing effective immunotherapeutics is the identification of target molecules that promote anti-tumor efficacy across the patient population while sparing healthy tissue from damaging autoimmunity. The intestinally restricted receptor guanylyl cyclase C (GUCY2C) is a target that has been investigated for the treatment of colorectal cancer and numerous animal, and clinical studies have demonstrated both efficacy and safety. Here, we describe the current state of GUCY2C-directed cancer immunotherapy and the future directions of this …
