Landscape Movements By Two Species Of Migratory Nectar-Feeding Bats (Leptonycteris) In A Northern Area Of Seasonal Sympatry, Michael A. Bogan, Paul Cryan, Christa D. Weise, Ernest W. Valdez
Landscape Movements By Two Species Of Migratory Nectar-Feeding Bats (Leptonycteris) In A Northern Area Of Seasonal Sympatry, Michael A. Bogan, Paul Cryan, Christa D. Weise, Ernest W. Valdez
Western North American Naturalist
Animals often migrate to exploit seasonally ephemeral food. Three species of nectar-feeding phyllostomid bats migrate north from Mexico into deserts of the United States each spring and summer to feed on blooms of columnar cactus and century plants (Agave spp.). However, the habitat needs of these important desert pollinators are poorly understood. We followed the nighttime movements of 2 species of long-nosed bats (Leptonycteris yerbabuenae and L. nivalis) in an area of late-summer sympatry at the northern edges of their migratory ranges. We radio-tracked bats in extreme southwestern New Mexico during 22 nights over 2 summers and …

Responses Of Small Mammal Communities To Pinyon-Juniper Habitat Treatments, Mark E. Peterson, Cynthia E. Rebar, Karen S. Eisenhart, Denise I. Stetson
Western North American Naturalist
Small mammals should be considered in wildlife management decisions because they are an important component of ecosystems. We examined small mammal population abundances (N) on 4 habitat treatment types in Colorado pinyon pine (Pinus edulis)–Utah juniper ( Juniperus osteosperma) woodlands on the Uncompahgre Plateau, Montrose, Colorado. We trapped small mammals in Sherman live traps on 4 habitat treatment types—including 2 types of management treatments (chaining, roller chop), sites with high drought-related mortality of pinyon pine, and sites of mature pinyon-juniper (PJ) woodland—on 3 mesas. We modeled detection probability of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) …

Stimulation Of Anterior Thalamic Nucleus Protects Hippocampus Neural Injury In Kainic Acid-Induced Epileptic Rats, Na Yan, Ning Chen, Wei Gao, Wei Wang
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Anterior nucleus of thalamus (ANT) stimulation has been proved to be effective in the treatment of refractory epilepsy, but the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. We examined the role of ANT stimulation on hippocampal neuron death after seizures induced by kainic acid (KA). Our data showed that ANT stimulation could significantly rescue neurons from death induced by seizures, by reducing the release of cytochrome c (cyto c) and also via apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) induced by seizures through inhibiting the activated caspase-9 and caspase-3. Our data suggest that ANT stimulation may protect against neuronal loss and reduce neuronal injury in …

Aesthetic Regime Change: The Burnham Plans And Us Landscape Imperialism In The Philippines, Scott; University Kirsch
Aesthetic Regime Change: The Burnham Plans And Us Landscape Imperialism In The Philippines, Scott; University Kirsch
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Taking Daniel Burnham’s 1904–1905 visit to the Philippines as a starting point, thisarticle examines the unrealized dream of US colonial officials to extend American empire through the production of space, particularly the aesthetic dimensions or what might be called a landscape vision of US empire. It offers a brief but intimate history of the making of the Burnham plans for Manila and Baguio so as to better understand how the ideological contradictions of the imperial moment were built into American colonial spaces, sometimes brutally but sometimes through aesthetic means in the formation of setting and landscape. Keywords: landscape • urban planning …
The (Anti)Colonial Awit Of Juan Tamad: Didacticism And Subversion In A Colonial Metrical Romance, Laurence Marvin Castillo
The (Anti)Colonial Awit Of Juan Tamad: Didacticism And Subversion In A Colonial Metrical Romance, Laurence Marvin Castillo
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
In the early decades of the twentieth century a metrical romance on the life of Juan Tamad, recounting the Westernized narrative of the adventures of the Tagalog numskull hero, Juan Tamad, was printed in Manila. Thisarticle links the text’s literary history to the discursive regimes of the Spanish and American colonial orders, and treats it as a heteroglossic text that carries the impulses of both clerical and secular didacticism and of radical anticolonial politics. Juan Tamad has since been the embodiment of the Filipino critical imagination in cultural permutations across Philippine history, such as the cinema of Manuel Conde (1947–1963).Keywords: …

Feedback Loops As Dynamic Processes Of Organizational Knowledge Creation In The Context Of The Innovations’ Front-End, N Tzokas, H Akbar, Y Baruch
Feedback Loops As Dynamic Processes Of Organizational Knowledge Creation In The Context Of The Innovations’ Front-End, N Tzokas, H Akbar, Y Baruch
Plymouth Business School
Feedback loops are instrumental in the organizational knowledge creation (OKC) process across the highly uncertain and dynamic innovation's front-end. Therefore, managers should be aware of how these loops unfold, how to recognize meaningful patterns and how to steer them towards planned and emergent outcomes. Easy to say, difficult to practise! This empirical paper focuses on knowledge–conceptualization – the new knowledge's generation-crystallization journey – and develops a unique model of feedback loops as dynamic processes of OKC in the context of the innovations’ front-end. Using ten qualitatively studied innovations, the authors identify five front-end OKC stages (generation, evaluation, expansion, refinement and …

Equine-Facilitated Therapy And Trauma: Current Knowledge, Future Needs., Marlys Staudt, Donna J. Cherry
ETSU Faculty Works
Equine-facilitated therapy (EFT) is a relatively new treatment for trauma and PTSD. EFT as well as animal assisted interventions in general have been introduced and implemented in mental health treatment for children and adults, though the research in support of these interventions has not kept up with practice. The purpose of this review is to examine the use of EFT for clients suffering from trauma/PTSD. Studies were included if PTSD/trauma was assessed and/or was measured as an outcome. A search of relevant databases resulted in nine peer-reviewed studies that met criteria. Studies are summarized and implications for future research are …

Zarnoch Studies The Health Of Our Waters, Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
Some people look at scientists and think of them as narrowly focused on obscure issues, but that is not the case with Dr. Chester Zarnoch. “You’re not just exploring the biology and the chemistry associated with the problem you’re working on, but also thinking about social implications, about economic implications,” he says.
A native of Manhattan, Zarnoch has studied and worked his entire life in New York, from receiving his bachelor’s degree at Southampton College of Long Island University, his master’s in the philosophy of biology at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center, a master’s in biology …

Boom And Bust Carbon-Nitrogen Dynamics During Reforestation, Anthony J. Parolari, Megan L. Mobley, Allan R. Bacon, Gabriel Katul, Daniel Deb. Richter, Amilcare Porporato
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Legacies of historical land use strongly shape contemporary ecosystem dynamics. In old-field secondary forests, tree growth embodies a legacy of soil changes affected by previous cultivation. Three patterns of biomass accumulation during reforestation have been hypothesized previously, including monotonic to steady state, non-monotonic with a single peak then decay to steady state, and multiple oscillations around the steady state. In this paper, the conditions leading to the emergence of these patterns is analyzed. Using observations and models, we demonstrate that divergent reforestation patterns can be explained by contrasting time-scales in ecosystem carbon-nitrogen cycles that are influenced by land use legacies. …

Morpho-Phonemic Analysis Boosts Word Reading For Adult Struggling Readers, Susan H. Gray, Linnea C. Ehri, John C. Locke
Publications and Research
A randomized control trial compared the effects of two kinds of vocabulary instruction on component reading skills of adult struggling readers. Participants seeking alternative high school diplomas received 8 h of scripted tutoring to learn forty academic vocabulary words embedded within a civics curriculum. They were matched for language background and reading levels, then randomly assigned to either morpho-phonemic analysis teaching word origins, morpheme and syllable structures, or traditional whole word study teaching multiple sentence contexts, meaningful connections, and spellings. Both groups made comparable gains in learning the target words, but the morpho-phonemic group showed greater gains in reading unfamiliar …

The influence of the ratio of Eudragit® L100-55 or Kolliphor® P188 on the solubility, dissolution, and permeability of ritonavir was studied with a goal of preparing solid dispersions (SDs) of ritonavir. SDs were formulated using solvent evaporation or lyophilization techniques, and evaluated for their physical-chemical properties. The dissolution and permeability assessments of the functionality of the SDs were carried out. The preliminary functional stability of these formulations was assessed at accelerated storage conditions for a period of six months. Ritonavir: Eudragit® L100-55 (RE, 1:3) SD showed a 36-fold higher solubility of compared with pure ritonavir. Similarly, ritonavir:Kolliphor® P188 (RP, 1:2) …

Reflections On A Lifetime Of Reading, Frederick W. Guyette Mr.
Reflections On A Lifetime Of Reading, Frederick W. Guyette Mr.
South Carolina Libraries
Here I give an account of my life as a reader. The first books I remember enjoying are those that were read aloud on Captain Kangaroo, such as Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, The Story about Ping, and Stone Soup. When I was a little older, in school we learned about science and current events from the stories in Weekly Reader. This was followed by an interest in baseball and the sports page in the local newspaper. In high school, I was more interested in films than books, but “visual literacy” has it place in life, …
