Winter Ecology And Spring Dispersal Of Common Ravens In Wyoming, Luke W. Peebles, Michael R. Conover
Winter Ecology And Spring Dispersal Of Common Ravens In Wyoming, Luke W. Peebles, Michael R. Conover
Western North American Naturalist
Numbers of Common Ravens (Corvus corax) have increased in western North America, and these high abundances are the source of problems throughout the species’ range. Little is known about the winter ecology of ravens. We studied a population of ravens in Wyoming during the winters of 2013–2015; our goals were to examine use of landfills for foraging and use of anthropogenic structures for roosting, as well as dispersal patterns of ravens from these landfills in the spring. On average, 22% of radio-marked ravens foraged at landfills on a given day and 68% roosted at anthropogenic sites (e.g. on …

Stable Isotopes In The Eye Lenses Of Doryteuthis Plei: Exploring Natal Origins And Migratory Patterns In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Brenna A. Meath
Stable Isotopes In The Eye Lenses Of Doryteuthis Plei: Exploring Natal Origins And Migratory Patterns In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Brenna A. Meath
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Stable isotope analysis is an emerging tool to examine trophic pathways and migratory patterns of marine organisms. Squid are widely distributed in coastal and deep water regions of the Gulf of Mexico. Stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen found within cephalopod tissues can provide information on both trophic level and habitat of their food sources. More recently, ontogenetic changes in stable isotope ratios within squid eye lenses have been documented. Concentric layers of crystallin proteins are added to the lens as the squid ages; the center of the lens contains the oldest layer and the youngest layers are on …

Studying The Role Of Axon Fasciculation During Development In A Computational Model Of The Xenopus Tadpole Spinal Cord, O Davis, R Merrison-Hort, Sr Soffe, R Borisyuk
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
During nervous system development growing axons can interact with each other, for example by adhering together in order to produce bundles (fasciculation). How does such axon-axon interaction affect the resulting axonal trajectories, and what are the possible benefits of this process in terms of network function? In this paper we study these questions by adapting an existing computational model of the development of neurons in the Xenopus tadpole spinal cord to include interactions between axons. We demonstrate that even relatively weak attraction causes bundles to appear, while if axons weakly repulse each other their trajectories diverge such that they fill …

(excerpt)
Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) (= Xyleborus germanus) is an ambrosia beetle that is found in Japan, Korea, the KurU Islands, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, central Europe, and the Cnited States (Nobuchi 1981). It attacks apparently healthy plants and those that are dying or recently dead (Weber 1982). Kaneko (1967) reported X. germanus to be a serious pest on tea (Thea sp.) plants in Japan, and Heidenreich (1%0) reported it on oak (Quercus sp.) trees in Gennany. This beetle seems to be increasing in economic importance on black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) and other hardwood species in the U.S. …

The Great Lakes Entomologist
Rearing immatures of Euschistus tristigmus tristigmus in a range of split photophases during each 24 h period and in constant light showed that the adult dimorphic response in shoulder shape and number of midventral spots could be produced; individuals reared in photoperiods in which each scotopnase was at least 2 h in length developed into the tristigmus (short-day) form.

(excerpt)
Owing to their large body size, the larvae and pupae ofgiant silkworm moths (Saturniidae) are ideal food for many animals. Winter predation on the pupae of Hyalophora cecropia (L.) in Illinois by birds (Waldbauer and Sternburg, Ecology 48:312-315, 1967) is a well known example.

A Directory Of Policies On Arthropod Collecting On Public Lands, Gary A. Dunn
The Great Lakes Entomologist
There are many local, state, and federal agencies with responsibilities for managing public lands. The availability of these lands for entomological research and collecting is determined in great part by the specific governmental charges for the management and use of the area; for example: preservation, recreation, or multiple-use resource management.

A New Method For Exposing Deposit Feeders To Contaminated Sediments For Food Chain Studies, Dale Roberts, Peter G. Meier
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
The ubiquity and refractory nature of certain organic compounds, such as chlorinated pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's), results in their accumulation in aquatic sediments (Holdrinet et al. 1978, Peck et al. 1980, Wang et al. 1979). Their continuous release from this reservoir through physico-chemical and biogenic processes to the overlying water column results in the accumulation of xenobiotic compounds in the food chain.

Large-Scale Production Of Fungal Bait Blocks For The Attraction Of Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), R. E. Smith
The Great Lakes Entomologist
It has been shown that wood infected with the brown rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum (Pers. ex Fr.) Murr. is'more attractive to termites than sound wood. For several years, small blocks of infected wood have been used as bait to sample soil sites for the presence of termites. The method described here for bait block production is more suitable than the ASTM method for large-scale work.
Text Selection For Read-Alouds: The Influence Of Topic In Children’S Discussions Of Literary Texts, Kim Skinner
Text Selection For Read-Alouds: The Influence Of Topic In Children’S Discussions Of Literary Texts, Kim Skinner
The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction
In today's classrooms, the teacher’s text selection for read-alouds directly impacts students’ opportunities to systematically participate in higher order thinking about texts. This ethnographic study examined the discursive processes and practices over time of elementary students (and their teacher) before, during, and after teacher-led read-aloud discussions of literary texts in an after-school philosophy club. The study investigated the student opportunities for talking, thinking, and understanding provided by discussing the controversial topics of the texts. The analyses illustrate the consequences to student thinking and meaning-making when controversial texts are used in read-alouds as a springboard for discussion, as well as the …

Racism, Juries, And Justice: Addressing Post-Verdict Juror Testimony Of Racial Prejudice During Deliberations, Andrew C. Helman
Racism, Juries, And Justice: Addressing Post-Verdict Juror Testimony Of Racial Prejudice During Deliberations, Andrew C. Helman
Maine Law Review
From the beginning, race played a role in the prosecution of Christopher McCowen for the rape and murder of well-known fashion writer Christa Worthington. To some, the trial was even a spectacle and treated as “one of the most spectacular homicide cases in [Massachusetts'] history.” It quickly became a “made-for-cable-news tale of the heiress fashion writer and her lowly Portuguese fisherman lover, illicit sex, and an out-of-wedlock child,” all set in a seaside village. McCowen, an African-American garbage man, was right in the middle of it; police and prosecutors did not believe his assertions that he had consensual sex with …

Weeks V. Krysa: Cultivating The Garden Of Adverse Possession, Marya R. Baron
Maine Law Review
In Weeks v. Krysa, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, sitting as the Law Court, found that cultivating a garden on a disputed parcel was an “occasional encroachment[],” insufficient to show intent to “displace the owner of the disputed lot or put the owner on notice” of being at risk of adverse possession. Under the traditional common law of adverse possession, cultivation of a garden is one of the hallmarks of an open and notorious use that would put a record owner on notice. However, after Weeks v. Krysa, a question remains as to whether cultivation of a garden will be …
Role Of C-Kit In Atherosclerosis: A Mechanistic Study, Lei Song
Role Of C-Kit In Atherosclerosis: A Mechanistic Study, Lei Song
Open Access Dissertations
Rationale: c-Kit, as a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK), is present in multiple cell types including vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs). However, so far, limited progress has been made to understand how c-Kit mediates SMC biology, and whether the presence of this receptor is critical for vascular pathogenesis such as atherosclerosis. Objectives: In this dissertation, I investigated the roles of c-Kit in atherosclerosis and underlying mechanisms. Methods: c-Kit distribution was determined in both murine and human aortae using a combination of KitBac-eGFP reporter mice, immunofluorescence (IF), and Western blot. c-Kit deficiency studies were performed in c-Kit mutant (KitW/W-v) mice on an …
