Notes On Microctonus Spp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Introduced To Iowa Against The Alfalfa Weevil, Hypera Postica (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), James W. Mertins

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The braconid parasitoid Microctonus colesi was released in Story and Boone counties, Iowa, but not recovered from collected alfalfa weevils, Hypera postica. Sampled adult weevils were parasitized at an overall seasonal rate of 41.5% by Microctonus aethiopoides, although it had not been released in the immediate vicinity.

Effects Of Aprons On Pitfall Trap Catches Of Carabid Beetles In Forests And Fields, Marc E. Epstein, Herbert M. Kulman Oct 2017

Effects Of Aprons On Pitfall Trap Catches Of Carabid Beetles In Forests And Fields, Marc E. Epstein, Herbert M. Kulman

The Great Lakes Entomologist

This study compared the efficacy of three types of pitfall traps in four forest and two field habitats. Two traps had aprons and one did not. The two apron traps were the same except for a gap between the trap and the plywood-apron, allowing captures from above or below. Traps were placed in a split-plot design and had three replicates of the three trap types per habitat. The traps were emptied each week from May to September. ANOVA's were performed on 12 trapped species separately over habitats, weeks, and the in- teractions between them. The nonapron trap captured over 40% …

Cantharidin And Insects: An Historical Review, Daniel K. Young

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The defensive role played by cantharidin in meloid and oedemerid beetles has been well documented. However. several groups of insects are known to orient positively toward the chemical or to the beetles which produce it: Miridae (Hemiptera); Pyrochroidae, Anthicidae (Coleoptera): Ceratopogonidae, Anthomyiidae (Diptera); and Braconidae Hymenopteran. Literature citations are summarized for each of these taxa using current nomencla.tun: and indicating the nature of the association.

The Importance Of Peer-To-Peer Grooming Among Non-Human Primates Oct 2017

The Importance Of Peer-To-Peer Grooming Among Non-Human Primates

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Among non-human primates, grooming is a common practice. Research has shown that there are many underlying reasons why non-human primates groom. It is not completely altruistic or selfish but is often a resource traded for food, mating access, protection, and other social benefits. It can be used to achieve higher social rank as the bonds formed from grooming help primates climb the social ladder. There are other advantages of grooming, which include increased social bonding, mating access, and offspring support

Children And Autism Spectrum Disorder: The Developing Role Of Technology In Teaching Communication Skils

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often struggle to learn effective communication skills. Researchers have asserted that the best methods for teaching correct communication skills to these children involve technological tools, such as videos, music, and graphics. Implementing these tools into the public school systems and the homes of children with ASD has been shown to improve their development of communication skills and includes educating teachers and parents about the positive effects that utilizing the tools can bring to the daily lives of children with ASD. When and how to implement these tools may depend on a child's level …

Nadph Oxidase 4 Modulates Hepatic Responses To Lipopolysaccharide Mediated By Toll-Like Receptor-4., Anand Singh, Bhargav Koduru, Cameron Carlisle, Hasina Akhter, Rui-Ming Liu, Katrin Schroder, Ralf P. Brandes, David M. Ojcius

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in development of many liver diseases. Stimulation of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) initiates inflammation and promotes development of hepatocellular carcinoma and other liver diseases. NADPH oxidases contribute to LPS-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and modulate TLR responses, but whether these enzymes function in TLR4 responses of hepatocytes is unknown. In the present work, we examined the role of NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4) in LPS-induced TLR4 responses in human hepatoma cells and wildtype and Nox4-deficient mice. We found that LPS increased expression of Nox4, TNF-α, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen …

Identifying misconceptions in student learning is a valuable practice for evaluating student learning gains and directing educational interventions. By accurately identifying students’ knowledge and misconceptions about microbiology concepts, instructors can design effective classroom practices centered on student understanding. Following the development of ASM’s Curriculum Guidelines in 2012, we developed a concept inventory, the Microbiology for Health Sciences Concept Inventory (MHSCI), that measures learning gains and identifies student misconceptions in health sciences microbiology classrooms. The 23-question MHSCI was delivered to a wide variety of students at multiple institution types. Psychometric analysis identified that the MHSCI instrument is both discriminatory and reliable …
