From The Womb To The Tree; Child-Rearing Practices And Beliefs Among The Toraja Of Sulawesi, Toke Hoppenbrouwers, Stanislaus Sandarupa, Aurora Donzelli
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This article documents beliefs about pregnancy, birth, infant, and maternal health and infant death in Toraja, Sulawesi. We interviewed 42 mothers of babies between one week and six months old, a dozen traditional and contemporary midwives, the ritual specialist to minaa Tato' Dena', a physician and two traditional healers. We performed a cursory examination of the extent to which mothers and health professionals still adhere to the beliefs of to dolo (the ancestors or the people from before). Examples of rejected beliefs are that intercourse adversely affects breast milk and that it should await the end of the recommended two-year …

Exhibiting The Exotic At The Exhibition: Music And The Evolutionary Sociocultural Continuum At The 1904 St. Louis World’S Fair, David Kendall
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
The World’s Fair had long been a showcase of the progress and enlightenment of the modern Western nation, justified partly through the popularization of the new field of sociology that provided a linear evolutionary model of human sociocultural development. This model was available for illustration in St. Louis in 1904 largely due to the American possession of the Philippines. The new colony boasted many ethnic groups at various levels of social and cultural development, allowing the Fair organizers to display both the range of the evolutionary sociocultural continuum and the benefits of American colonialism in one large 47-acre “habitat.” Another …

Gis Analysis Of Dvāravatī Dharmacakras And The Rise Of Buddhism In Thailand, Areerut Patnukao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores how GIS as well as spatial and statistical analyses could be used to advance the understanding of Dvāravatī settlement and Dharmacakras locations. The research employs archaeological and geographical parameters to measure and quantify the patterns of Dvāravatī settlements, Dharmacakra locations, their interrelationship, and their relationship with environmental setting. The different types of spatial analyses, parameter settings within each analysis, and approaches are used to examine and explore the differences and commonalities of these variables at three different geographic levels: national, regional, and river basin levels.
Four distinct approaches are incorporated in this study. Chi-Square analysis shows significant …
Interaction Of Cocoa Powder With Intestinal Microbiota, Martha M. Escoto Sabillon
Interaction Of Cocoa Powder With Intestinal Microbiota, Martha M. Escoto Sabillon
LSU Master's Theses
Cocoa is the fully fermented and dried seed of the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao L.) which has prebiotic properties, due to their high concentration of polyphenols. Therefore, the ingestion of cocoa could cause changes in the proportions of the intestinal microbiota that can influence the intestinal immune response. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of alkalization process of the cocoa bean in the diversity of the gut microbiota. The samples were “lavado” unprocessed cocoa powder, “natural” unprocessed cocoa powder, “D-11-S” as alkalized cocoa powder, “D-11-B” heavily alkalized cocoa powder, and raw cocoa “shells” and a control …

Nick Joaquin In Retrospect, Jonathan Chua
Nick Joaquin In Retrospect, Jonathan Chua
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Excerpt: A man with two birthdays was Nick Joaquin. All sources agree that he was born Nicomedes Joaquin in 1917 in Paco, Manila, and one even gives the time of birth (“around 6:00 am”). But was it on May 4, as his passport indicates, or on September 15, the feast day of St. Nicomedes, that he “emerged from his mother’s womb . . . [and] made a big howling noise to announce his arrival”? Nick himself played coy, because “he hated having people come around to celebrate his birthday.”
The Sling And The Blowgun As Combat Weapons In Pre-Islamic Java; Notes On Old Javanese Terms "GaṇḌI" And "Tulup", Jiří Jákl
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Two Old Javanese terms, ga i and tulup, are discussed in detail. While the term tulup appears to be unproblematic, ga i has previously been identified with a score of weapons, including bow, club, war hammer, and sling. I argue that the original meaning of this enigmatic term is 'projectile, pellet', while its second, derived meaning refers in most cases to 'sling', and, occasionally, to 'blowgun'. Both weapons are represented in the Old Javanese textual record as the weapons associated with predatory warfare, and with the forces of adharma. I have tentatively suggested that this configuration reflects the pre-modern reality …

Recent Works: Exploring Connections With Naturally Derived Materials Through The Context Of Art, Edmond Caputo
Theses
Recent Works is a body of art that arrived from my deep connection to the earth and nature. I was born and raised on a lake in upstate N.Y. and my childhood offered me a plethora of stimulation for my senses to receive and appreciate. It is a magical place to discover childhood, to experience as an adult, and one that remains my sanctum sanctorum. Growing up and bearing witness to a fluctuating and fragile ecosystem, where you can experience some of nature’s most triumphant moments and its transitional phases, has revealed itself in a way that has continuously informed …

Using Simulation And Critical Thinking In Speech-Language Pathology: A University Case Study, Carol M. Ellis Ph.D
Using Simulation And Critical Thinking In Speech-Language Pathology: A University Case Study, Carol M. Ellis Ph.D
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
Abstract
Education is changing. Virtual learning is now a common occurrence. Along with this change, more and more virtual learning tools are being used in the educational setting. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has recognized this change and has modified certification standards to include clinical simulation experiences in graduate speech-language training programs. Along with this modification, critical thinking skills are an expected goal, not only in face-to-face experiences, but also in simulation experiences. Educators need to meet this expectation to ensure that future speech-language pathologists are fully prepared to make sound decisions within the clinical setting. Educators may benefit from …

Event Planner Sensitivity To The Needs Of Individuals With Visual Disability At Meetings And Events, Gina Fe G. Causin Ph.D., Tessa Mccarthy Ph.D.
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
Special events, such as fairs, conventions, ballgames, and concerts are typically activities people attend to participate in the festivities and enjoy with friends and family members. For individuals with disabilities, however, these types of events can create more challenges than enjoyment. Despite a thorough review of the literature, no studies were found which evaluated the experiences of individuals who are blind and have visual impairments at events and meetings. The aim of this study was to determine the current level of accessibility at meetings perceived by consumers who are blind and visually impaired. Respondents to the survey indicated many obstacles …

Reconstruction Of An Indigenous Community's Belief In Dragon; Research On Prehistoric Batu Naga Site In Kuningan, West Java, Ali Akbar
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Archaeological remains can be used as data to reconstruct the culture of the past. At the top of Mount Tilu, Kuningan, stands a menhir decorated with reliefs. The indigenous community which once cared for this site has long vanished. This paper is the result of a research applying archaeological method and semiotic interpretation to reconstruct the life of this long-dead indigenous community. The reliefs on the menhir tell of the beliefs of this ancient which venerated the dragon. They considered this creature as the beginning of life on the earth. This dragon is different from its counterparts known in other …

Frightened By The Eagle; Recording Songs And Music From The Island Of Siberut, Mentawai Islands, Gerard A. Persoon, Reimar Schefold
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Singing is the most important element of the traditional music culture on Siberut, the largest of the Mentawai Islands (West Sumatra, Indonesia). There are various types of songs on the island. Some of them are related to the world of spirits and ancestors. These are mainly sung by shamans during healing ceremonies and rituals. Other songs are made up by men and women during their daily activities, when they are fishing out at sea or when they take a rest from collecting forest products. Various animals (birds, primates, reptiles) or natural forces (wind, thunder) provide inspiration for lyrics and melodies, …

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Mabedda Bola is a ritual which has been handed down from the ancestors of the Bugis - Makassarese people in South Sulawesi. At the ceremony which is called menre bola baru, held as part of the ritual inauguration of a new house, the Mabedda Bola, handprints are made on the poles and walls of the new house. In the region in which this custom is still honoured, hand stencils on the walls of the prehistoric caves have also been found. This article examines the significance of handprints in the Mabedda Bola ritual which might possibly be related to the hand …
Nouns And Pronouns In Central Lembata Lamaholot (Austronesian, Indonesia), Hanna Fricke
Nouns And Pronouns In Central Lembata Lamaholot (Austronesian, Indonesia), Hanna Fricke
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In the past, linguists focused their studies on the description of the varieties of Lamaholot spoken in coastal communities. This article introduces Central Lembata Lamaholot, a Lamaholot variety spoken in the central mountains on the island of Lembata in the Indonesian province Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), which possesses features in the nominal and pronominal domains not found in other varieties of Lamaholot described so far. Alienable nouns in Central Lembata have morphological plural and specificity marking, and one sub-set of the alienable nouns has two alternating forms which are functionally different. Furthermore, free and bound pronouns in Central Lembata Lamaholot …

Multi-Type Branching Processes Modeling Of Nosocomial Epidemics, Zeinab Mohamed, Tamer Oraby
Multi-Type Branching Processes Modeling Of Nosocomial Epidemics, Zeinab Mohamed, Tamer Oraby
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Nosocomial epidemics are infectious diseases which spread among different types of susceptible individuals in a health-care facility. To model this type of epidemics, we use a multi-type branching process with a multivariate negative binomial offspring distribution. In particular, we estimate the basic reproduction number R0 and study its relationship with the parameters of the offspring distribution. in case of a single-type epidemic, we investigate the effect of contact tracing on the estimates for R0.
Why Does It Take Two To Tango? Lifetime Fitness Consequences Of Parental Care In A Burying Beetle, Ashlee N. Smith, J. Curtis Creighton, Mark C. Belk
Why Does It Take Two To Tango? Lifetime Fitness Consequences Of Parental Care In A Burying Beetle, Ashlee N. Smith, J. Curtis Creighton, Mark C. Belk
Faculty Publications
In species that require parental care, each parent can either care for their offspring or leave them in the care of the other parent. For each parent this creates three possible parental care strategies: biparental care, uniparental (male or female) care, and uniparental desertion by either the male or female. The burying beetle, Nicrophorus orbicollis, typically exhibits biparental care of offspring, and thus provides a unique system that allows us to compare the fitness benefits of these parental care strategies in an unconfounded way. In this study, we assess the lifetime fitness of biparental care, uniparental care, and uniparental …
Morphometric Analysis Of The Pig Proximal Femoral Epiphyseal Plate, Ronald Vincent Perrone Jr.
Morphometric Analysis Of The Pig Proximal Femoral Epiphyseal Plate, Ronald Vincent Perrone Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In young growing vertebrates, the head of the femur is attached to the neck by a cartilaginous joint (femoral capital epiphyseal plate) comprised of growth cartilage with an interdigitating arrangement of undulations of various sizes called mammillary processes and a perichondrium. Occasionally the femoral head and the neck separate, a condition known as slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). It has been suggested that mammillary processes function to reduce the likelihood of such a slip (SCFE). After removing soft tissues from the proximal ends of eight mongrel pig femurs (nine days preterm to 30 months), the exposed growth plate surfaces on …

We aimed to determine whether aflatoxin dietary exposure plays a role in the high incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) observed among Hispanics in South Texas. We measured TP53R249S somatic mutation, hallmark of aflatoxin etiology in HCC, using droplet digital PCR and RFLP. TP53R249S mutation was detected in 3 of 41 HCC tumors from Hispanics in South Texas (7.3%). We also measured TP53R249S mutation in plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from 218 HCC patients and 96 Hispanic subjects with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis, from South Texas. The mutation was detected only in Hispanic and Asian HCC patients, and patients harboring TP53R249S mutation …

Developmental Rate And Longevity Of Illinoia Pepperi (Homoptera: Aphididae) On Excised Blueberry Leaf Disks, E. A. Elsner, M. E. Whalon
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The aphid Illinoia pepperi is the vector of blueberry shoestring virus, a serious disease of cultivated high bush blueberry. We present a laboratory study of the developmental rate of I. pepperi on excised blueberry leaf discs at different temperatures from 5 to 29°C. Growth rates were lowest at the upper temperature treatments (26 and 29°) and at 10°C. Growth rate and duration in degree-days for each life stage are presented as well as an overall regression equation for development. The lower developmental threshold was calculated at 3.4°C. The results are being used in a phenological management system and an epidemiological …

Longevity And Weight Loss Of Free-Flying Male Cecropia Moths, Hyalophora Cecropia (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae), G. P. Waldbauer, J. G. Sternburg, D. H. Janzen
The Great Lakes Entomologist
During their spring flight season, free-ranging male cecropia moths lived a maximum of 12 days (one of 124 recaptured moths of 387 released moths). The number of survivors declined precipitiously after day five; five to seven days is probably the usual life span. The recaptured moths did not have different initial weights than those that were not recaptured. The larger the moth the more absolute weight it lost and the faster it lost weight during the first few days. A moth lost about 20% of its weight during the first night of flight and accumulated about a 40% weight loss …
Aquatic Insect Colonization And Substrate Changes In A Relocated Stream Segment, Richard P. Narf
Aquatic Insect Colonization And Substrate Changes In A Relocated Stream Segment, Richard P. Narf
The Great Lakes Entomologist
A section of Bear Creek in northwestern Wisconsin was relocated to accommodate new highway construction. The 850-m section of the stream was shortened to 650 m and fashioned with five broad bends and a uniform width and depth. Sandy substrate and lack of coarse particulate organic matter within the new channel delayed colonization by aquatic insects. The absence of snags, boulders, and cobbles in the design of the new channel reduced available habitat. Substrate stabilization and colonization of available habitats was determined to be complete 5.5 years after channelization, when the 22 dominant insect taxa were similar to the control …
