Effects Of Differential Drl Exposure On Interval Timing: Information Vs. Inhibition, Matthew L. Eckard
Effects Of Differential Drl Exposure On Interval Timing: Information Vs. Inhibition, Matthew L. Eckard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent investigations focusing on interventions to improve self-controlled choice have centered upon timing processes. However, speculation still remains regarding the mechanism of these interventions. To investigate how these interventions have their effects, timing in mice was assessed using an 18-s peak procedure (18-s FI trials; 54-s peak trials). During an intervention phase, mice in three treatment groups experienced differential reinforcement of low rate (DRL) schedules of reinforcement. A control group received continued exposure to the peak procedure. After 36 DRL sessions, timing was reassessed in the peak procedure. In contrast to previous reports, the DRL intervention resulted in less precise …

This study focused on examining the relationship between the child-care directors' years of experience in relation to the Activities subscale on the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale-R. The data used in the study was from the Quality Rating and Improvement for West Virginia Child-Care grant, which was funded by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. The participants included 175 4-year-old classrooms across West Virginia. The Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale contains 43 items across seven subscales. This scale was used to measure the activities score of the 4-year-old classrooms. There was no significant relationship found between the …
Dual Targeting Of The Mesenchymal And Amoeboid Pathways: A Viable Therapy Against Metastatic Breast Cancer, Brandon C. Jones
Dual Targeting Of The Mesenchymal And Amoeboid Pathways: A Viable Therapy Against Metastatic Breast Cancer, Brandon C. Jones
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Metastasis from the primary tumor site is the major cause of death in breast cancer, and acquisition of migration capacity is a key element for successful metastasis. Recently, it was found that expression of NEDD9, a focal adhesion associated scaffolding protein, could be used to switch between two types of single cell movement known as mesenchymal and amoeboid. Control of this "switch" can potentially open up new avenues of treatment against cancer metastasis. Simultaneous inhibition of both types of single cell movement may prevent cancer migration, thus decreasing cancer spreading and increasing survival of cancer patients. For example, forcibly pushing …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This written thesis is the supporting documentation for High Touch, my Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition. The exhibition seeks to define my personal expression of beauty through domestic pottery that seeks to both elevate and celebrate mundane life experiences.;The research underpinning my thesis explores the connections between object and user. The use of pottery, particularly in the home, has the ability to breed familiarity, consolation, comfort and security. It is only when pots are put into service within the household that an affinity for the object is achieved and its unique character is revealed. These moments cannot be codified …
Ripple Effect Mapping Of Youth & Adult Dyad Pairs Demonstrating Community Impact From Icook 4-H Intervention, Sina J.E. King
Ripple Effect Mapping Of Youth & Adult Dyad Pairs Demonstrating Community Impact From Icook 4-H Intervention, Sina J.E. King
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: Creating effective dissemination and implementation tools within community based, obesity prevention research is needed to bridge the current science to practice gap. Ripple Effect Mapping (REM) using Community Capitals Framework (CCF) is a community impact evaluation tool that is hypothesized to positively capture activity during dissemination within community programs. Although REM is a proposed impact evaluation method, it has not been widely adopted within the research sector. In order to facilitate the translation of research into evidenced based practice, a stepwise process must be described and tested to determine efficacy and effectiveness, followed by a method to translate findings …
Evaluating Steam Conditioning Manipulations And Grain Expressed Enzymes Effects On Feed Manufacturing Metrics, Feed Hygiene, Broiler Performance, And Bone Mineralization, John William Boney
Evaluating Steam Conditioning Manipulations And Grain Expressed Enzymes Effects On Feed Manufacturing Metrics, Feed Hygiene, Broiler Performance, And Bone Mineralization, John William Boney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Animal well-being, evolving feed manufacturing regulatory programs, and consumer perception drive the continued need to provide safe feed to animals. Considering the performance benefits associated with feeding pelleted feed, the concepts of hygienic feed production and production of highly durable pellets may interact to benefit the broiler chicken. In addition to hygienic and physical attributes, poultry nutrition may be enhanced by cereal grains expressing enzymatic activity. These additives may provide additional opportunities to support dietary phosphorus (P) requirements in growing broilers, further contributing to improved animal welfare conditions in an economically favorable manner. In order to study the effects of …
Novel Mechanisms Controlling The Expression Of The Antidiabetic Hepatokine Fibroblast Growth Factor 21, Kimberly M. Alonge
Novel Mechanisms Controlling The Expression Of The Antidiabetic Hepatokine Fibroblast Growth Factor 21, Kimberly M. Alonge
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The incidence of obesity has increased at an alarming rate during the past thirty years. Current therapies for the treatment and prevention of obesity and metabolic syndrome are ineffective and/or produce undesirable side effects. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a liver derived hormone that mediates adaptive changes in hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism by elevating energy expenditure and reducing lipid storage. Pharmacological administration of FGF21 analogs in both animal and human models induces striking reversals of obesity and type 2 diabetes. However, the activity of FGF21 analogs exhibit short half-lives in blood circulation and are unsuitable for current treatment. …
Bioacoustics And Behavior Of American Crocodiles In Belize, Miriam Boucher
Bioacoustics And Behavior Of American Crocodiles In Belize, Miriam Boucher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
American Crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) are large-bodied crocodylians broadly distributed throughout coastal and lowland wetlands in the Americas. Despite their being large, charismatic megafauna, the study of American Crocodile ecology is still lacking in many areas. As such we assessed the behavior and bioacoustics of American Crocodiles in Belize to address the paucity of data regarding these two facets of American Crocodile ecology. We conducted behavioral observations from three sites in the coastal zone of Belize. We categorized American Crocodile behavior and recorded activity duration for observed behaviors. In conjunction with behavioral data, we also assessed study sites to quantify the …
Carbon Dioxide Capture Using Amine Functionalized Carbonaceous Materials From Bio-Refinery Waste Streams, Emmanuel Atta-Obeng
Carbon Dioxide Capture Using Amine Functionalized Carbonaceous Materials From Bio-Refinery Waste Streams, Emmanuel Atta-Obeng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One of the greatest challenges in the world today is to replace exhaustible fossil fuel resources with renewable alternatives that will satisfy the increasing worldwide energy and chemical demands in a sustainable way. Using renewable precursors has a low impact on environmental health since it reduces pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and limits global warming and problems associated with waste management. Lignocellulosic biomass is the most available feedstock for developing sustainable chemicals and energy. A major challenge to the efficiency of the forest biorefinery industry is lack of suitable technologies for the conversion of its waste or by-products (lignin and hemicelluloses) …

Interactions Between Euwallacea Ambrosia Beetles, Their Fungal Symbionts And The Native Trees They Attack In The Eastern United States, Matthew C. Berger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In a globalized world, wood products are constantly being shipped from one location to another, along with tiny hitchhikers in the form of insects and microorganisms. Euwallacea validus is a fungus-farming ambrosia beetle native to East Asia that likely made its way to the United States in wood packaging materials in the latter half of the twentieth century. E. validus cultivates two fungal symbionts in the U.S., an unnamed Fusarium sp. (AF-4) and Raffaelea subfusca. Fusarium symbionts of Euwallacea ambrosia beetles as well as Raffaelea symbionts of closely related ambrosia beetles have incited widespread disease on more than one-hundred hosts …
Thermal Processes Associated With Pelleting And Feed Phosphate Variation In Diets On Feed Manufacture And Broiler Performance, Ariel N. Bergeron
Thermal Processes Associated With Pelleting And Feed Phosphate Variation In Diets On Feed Manufacture And Broiler Performance, Ariel N. Bergeron
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objectives of the first study were to assess performance and digestible amino acid concentration of diets fed to broilers that differed in diet formulation and degree of thermal processing. Basal diets were corn, soybean meal, and DDGS based and formulations were balanced to be similar in calculated energy and digestible amino acids. Treatments were arranged in a 3 x 3 factorial that varied in diet formulation (Basal, Basal + Meat and Bone Meal (MBM), and Basal + Bakery Byproduct (BBP)) and degree of thermal processing (Unprocessed Mash, Pellet, Double Pellet). Pelleted treatments were steam conditioned and extruded through a …
Clarifying Concepts In Cognitive Dissonance Theory, Eddie Harmon-Jones
Clarifying Concepts In Cognitive Dissonance Theory, Eddie Harmon-Jones
Animal Sentience
This commentary on Zentall’s target article focuses primarily on clarifying some postulates and variables in cognitive dissonance theory. I discuss the adaptive motivational functions of dissonance arousal and dissonance reduction, and attempt to clarify some past dissonance experiments and to tease apart a dissonance theory and contrast explanation of effort-justification-type effects. The evidence and arguments reviewed here support the explanatory power of cognitive dissonance theory in a wide variety of circumstances in human and nonhuman animals, but they depend on first defining concepts such as “cognitions” quite broadly, as Festinger did when he originally proposed the theory.
Cognitive Dissonance Or Contrast? It Could Be Both, Thomas Zentall
Cognitive Dissonance Or Contrast? It Could Be Both, Thomas Zentall
Animal Sentience
My target article suggested that cognitive dissonance may be accounted for by a simpler mechanism: contrast. Whether contrast can explain all cognitive dissonance effects is an empirical question, but it is always useful to try to distinguish simpler mechanisms from more complex cognitive ones. The insistence that cognitive dissonance is a human-only process quite different from contrast may be a self-serving means of justifying the exploitation of animals.
Experiment Versus Analogy In The Search For Animal Sentience, Geoffrey Hall
Experiment Versus Analogy In The Search For Animal Sentience, Geoffrey Hall
Animal Sentience
Deciding between rival accounts of an instance of an animal’s behavior can frequently be achieved by experimental tests of different predictions made by the alternatives. When, however, one (or both) of the alternatives is expressed in terms of the mental state of the animal, an experimental test to distinguish them can be hard to find. Although it is unsatisfactory in many ways, it may be necessary to fall back on argument from analogy with human behavior and experience.
Cognitive Continuity In Cognitive Dissonance, David R. Brodbeck, Madeleine I. R. Brodbeck
Cognitive Continuity In Cognitive Dissonance, David R. Brodbeck, Madeleine I. R. Brodbeck
Animal Sentience
Zentall’s (2016) model of cognitive dissonance is compatible with cognitive continuity between humans and nonhumans. It may help explain cognitive dissonance-like behavior in many species, including humans. It is also consistent with Tinbergen’s (1963) ‘four whys’ in ethological explanation.
Establishing That Contrast Is Cognitive Dissonance, Travis R. Smith
Establishing That Contrast Is Cognitive Dissonance, Travis R. Smith
Animal Sentience
Zentall suggests that the same mechanism underlies cognitive dissonance in humans and the within-trial contrast effect in pigeons (and humans). The contrast effect has face validity in explaining cognitive dissonance, but more research is needed to establish construct validity. To determine whether both phenomena share the same mechanism, future research should test (1) whether both share physiological processes, (2) whether individuals who show sensitivity to one are also sensitive to the other, and (3) whether both phenomena are affected by the same changes in an independent variable.

Mandates Of Maternity At A Science Museum, From Should To Must, David H. Lee
Publications and Research
A pregnancy exhibit at a science museum is an opportunity to research how medical advice is communicated and interpreted. This paper is about the Beginning of Life area of an exhibition called The Amazing You at the Tampa Museum of Science and Industry, where exhibits are prescriptive as well as descriptive. Expectant women are urged to deliver full-term, normal birthweight babies, by behaving according to prescribed medical norms. This study provides ethnographic descriptions of the exhibits, as well as insights from museum visitors who were interviewed. The exhibits, which emphasize fetal rights and maternal duties, are interpreted and critiqued by …
Creative And Novel Approaches To Empathy, Edward Neukrug
Creative And Novel Approaches To Empathy, Edward Neukrug
Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications
[Introduction] Near the end of Carl Rogers' life, he wrote a scathing article noting that his conceptualization of empathy had little to do with the popularized notion of empathy that had become known as "reflection of feelings." He may have been particularly angry because there were some apocryphal stories circulating about Rogers' work with clients. One of them goes something like this:
Rogers is seeing a client in his office on the 10th floor of a building. The client tells Rogers that he is really depressed, and Rogers says, "Sounds like you're really depressed." The client goes on to say …
Multimedia Techniques For Construction Education And Training, Wayne A. Bunnell, Darcy M. Bullock
Multimedia Techniques For Construction Education And Training, Wayne A. Bunnell, Darcy M. Bullock
JTRP Technical Reports
The current profession of civil engineering often focuses education and training on code compliance rather than constructability and construction techniques. Also, it is well accepted that it takes a decade or more for engineers to develop a high-level project construction understanding, that and many state departments of transportation rely on in-field training for entry-level inspectors, with little or no education provisions for contractors. This research investigated the use of time-lapse photography to develop training and education material that will improve the understanding of project construction and crucial quality control specifications of an entry-level engineer, contractor, or inspector. Overall, the project …

Effects Of Training Intensity On Locomotor Performance In Individuals With Chronic Spinal Cord Injury: A Randomized Crossover Study, Gabrielle Brazg, Meghan Fahey, Carey L. Holleran, Mark Connolly, Jane Woodward, Patrick W. Hennessy, Brian D. Schmit, T. George Hornby
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Background. Many physical interventions can improve locomotor function in individuals with motor incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI), although the training parameters that maximize recovery are not clear. Previous studies in individuals with other neurologic injuries suggest the intensity of locomotor training (LT) may positively influence walking outcomes. However, the effects of intensity during training of individuals with iSCI have not been tested. Objective. The purpose of this pilot, blinded-assessor randomized trial was to evaluate the effects of LT intensity on walking outcomes in individuals with iSCI. Methods. Using a crossover design, ambulatory participants with iSCI >1 year duration performed either …

Chilling Rights, Toni M. Massaro
Chilling Rights, Toni M. Massaro
University of Colorado Law Review
A persistent trope in free speech doctrine is that overbroad laws chill protected expression and compromise the breathing room needed for a vibrant marketplace of ideas. The conventional restrictions on facial challenges of measures that sweep beyond legitimate regulatory zones are relaxed. Whether and to what extent this liberal approach to judicial review actually governs in free speech law and not elsewhere, and whether this is constitutionally or normatively defensible, have been the subject of considerable and exceptionally insightful scholarship. Yet the United States Supreme Court has given the best of this work slight notice.
This Article proposes a new …

Clean Electrification, Shelley Welton
Clean Electrification, Shelley Welton
University of Colorado Law Review
To combat climate change, many leading states have adopted the aim of creating a "participatory"g rid. In this new model, electricity is priced based on time of consumption and carbon content, and consumers are encouraged to adjust their behavior and adopt new technologies to maintain affordable electricity. Although a more participatory grid is an important component of lowering greenhouse gas emissions, it also raises a new problem of clean energy justice: utilities and consumer advocates claim that such policies unjustly benefit the rich at the expense of the poor, given the type of consumer best able to participate in the …

It was just over forty years ago, shortly before the Safe Drinking Water Act was passed, that a group of mothers in the small, sleepy town of Woburn, Massachusetts realized there just may have been a connection between their children's leukemia and the town's water supply. They withstood the terrible smell and masked the water's rancid flavor with orange juice. For months they inquired, complained, and assembled in hopes that someone in a position of authority would notice what was so obvious to them. And for months they were dismissed and even ridiculed. Turns out they were right. It took …
Digging Up The Dirt: China's Exploitation Of Transgenic Seed Approvals, Lucas A. Westerman
Digging Up The Dirt: China's Exploitation Of Transgenic Seed Approvals, Lucas A. Westerman
University of Colorado Law Review
In 2013, China rejected shipments of U.S. corn imports due to the presence of an unapproved transgenic trait, creating an international trade disruption that sent ripples throughout the U.S. agriculture industry and grain markets. Syngenta, the seed company that began selling the trait to U.S. farmers prior to receiving China's import approval, largely shouldered the blame. U.S. farmers held Syngenta singularly liable and initiated a class action in an attempt to force Syngenta to pay for the drop in grain prices due to the disruption. The highly publicized domestic legal dispute left China's opportunistic actions largely unnoticed. The time has …
