Studies On Fucoidan And Its Production From Vietnamese Brown Seaweeds, Minh Ly Bui, Quoc Buu Ngo, Duy Nhut Nguyen, Duc Thinh Pham, Thi Thanh Van Tran

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Sulfated fucans are among the most widely studied of all the sulfated polysaccharides of plant origin that exhibit biological activities in mammalian systems. In this report fucoidans from some Vietnamese Sargassumspecies such as S.polycystum, S.oligocystum, S.mcclurei, S. Swartzii and denticaprum were extracted and fractionated on a DEAE-Sephadex A-25 column. On the basis of chemical and spectral analyses, the fucoidan fractions obtained were found to be the sulfated fucogalactans containing sulfate ester groups and uronic acid, and composed essentially of fucose and galactose, as well as a minor amount of other sugars. The polysaccharide fractions were tested for anticancer activity. The …

Alteration Of Gut Microbiota And Other Properties In Zucker Diabetic Fatty Rats After Antibiotics, Diet And Donor Transplant, Ryan Page Nov 2017

Alteration Of Gut Microbiota And Other Properties In Zucker Diabetic Fatty Rats After Antibiotics, Diet And Donor Transplant, Ryan Page

LSU Master's Theses

The compositions of bacterial communities inhabiting the human gut are associated with regulating energy balance, immune response, and neurological functions. Many of these benefits are attributed to byproducts of bacteria that feed on fermentable fibers. Research has shown that obese or lean host can transfer their phenotype to germ-free recipients, via microbiota transplant, without alteration in recipient diet. However, transfer may be attenuated by established microbial communities in conventionally-raised rodents or other species. A knockdown of recipient communities may be required before a transplant for microbiota of donors to populate gut of recipient. This study examined whether obese Zucker Diabetic …

The Effects Of Palmvitee On Human Nasal Septal Chondrocytes Culture Expansion And Cartilage Reconstruction, Ruszymah B.H.I., Aminuddin B.S., Gapor A., Fuzina H. Nov 2017

The Effects Of Palmvitee On Human Nasal Septal Chondrocytes Culture Expansion And Cartilage Reconstruction, Ruszymah B.H.I., Aminuddin B.S., Gapor A., Fuzina H.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Palmvitee may act as a beneficial supplement to cartilage tissue engineering which is currently still has certain limitation on chondrocyte expansion and dedifferentiation. Our objectives in thisstudy were to evaluate the effects of Palmvitee on the growth kinetic and phenotype gene expression of human nasal septal chondrocytesin monolayer expansion as well as cartilage reconstruction via tissue engineering technology. Human chondrocytes were cultured inmediums containing various Palmvitee concentrations. Among the different test groups, the medium containing Palmvitee at 3 μg/ml supported the highest chondrocyte growth rate. The gene expression in monolayer chondrocytes culture supplemented with 3 μg/ml Palmviteedemonstrated similar results as …

Bacteria As Ovipositional Attractants For Culex Pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae), C. Lee Rockett Nov 2017

Bacteria As Ovipositional Attractants For Culex Pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae), C. Lee Rockett

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

The study of factors and mechanisms involving ovipositional attractants in mosquitoes is still a relatively new area of research. Some early workers in mosquito biology suggested that gravid mosquitoes simply scattered their eggs indiscriminately on available aquatic sites; however, numerous field studies have failed to provide any real evidence for indiscriminate oviposition. The current idea is that oviposition involves not only locating an aquatic site, but the selection of an environment containing the necessary physical, chemical, and biotic factors required for larval development. It is desirable for female mosquitoes to be able to detect a breeding site that can …

Plato, Socrates And The Removal Of Confederate Monuments, Scott Berman Nov 2017

Plato, Socrates And The Removal Of Confederate Monuments, Scott Berman

Conference on Philosophy and Theology

Both Plato and Socrates would support the removal of confederate monuments because they thought that it was bad for communities to endorse harmful ideas. However, their explanations as to how harmful ideas such as white supremacy and slavery are bad for the communities are different. I shall be arguing that Socrates, not Plato, got it right and why that makes a difference.

Total Lipid And Fatty Acid Composition In Male And Female Larvae Of Indian-Meal Moth And Almond Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Bh. Subramanyam, L. K. Cutkomp Nov 2017

Total Lipid And Fatty Acid Composition In Male And Female Larvae Of Indian-Meal Moth And Almond Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Bh. Subramanyam, L. K. Cutkomp

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The total body lipid and fatty acid composition of last instar larvae of the Indian-meal moth, Plodia interpunctella, and almond moth, Cadra cautella, reared on a turkey mash diet was determined. Male P. interpunctella larvae contained significantly higher (lA-fold) total body lipid than females, while no differences between the sexes of C. cautella larvae were observed. The relative abundance of the fatty acids palmitate, palmitoleate, stearate, oleate, lineoleate, and linolenate was similar in both sexes of P. interpunctella and C. cautella. The accumulation of individual fatty acids in larvae of both the moth species did not correspond to …

Designation Of A Neotype For Sphinx Poecila Stephens (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae), J.C. E. Riotte

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

This designation of a neotype, in accordance with the provisions of Article 75(b) of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1985), has to be considered as continuation of the revisional article "Sphinx poecila, a valid North American species (Lepidoptera Sphingidae)" (Riotte 1980).

Comparative Biology Of Temperate And Subtropical Bark And Ambrosia Beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae, Platypodidae) In Indiana And Florida, Mark Deyrup, Thomas H. Atkinson Nov 2017

Comparative Biology Of Temperate And Subtropical Bark And Ambrosia Beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae, Platypodidae) In Indiana And Florida, Mark Deyrup, Thomas H. Atkinson

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Bark and ambrosia beetles were compared from two intensively studied sites. The Indiana site produced 58 species, the Florida site 57 species; 17 species occurred at both sites. Much greater plant host diversity at the Indiana site seems balanced by more favorable climate at the Florida site. There are more exotic species at the Florida site. Different patterns in feeding habits and mating habits of the beetles are related to the climate and history of the sites in complex ways. A list of the and their habits is included.

Reconciliation And Preconditions Of Existence: Normative Mythological Foundations In The Poetry Of Robert Frost, Bryan Salmons Nov 2017

Reconciliation And Preconditions Of Existence: Normative Mythological Foundations In The Poetry Of Robert Frost, Bryan Salmons

Conference on Philosophy and Theology

Using several of Frost’s better-known works—“Mending Wall,” “The Road Not Taken,” “To Earthward,” and “Desert Places”

--as a lens, as it were, I consider the issue of moral formation in the arts as it pertains to this highly-influential poet’s motifs. My paper suggests that, while he remained throughout his career an attendant oeuvre, in effect, both sardonic skeptic and therapeutic nihilist, Frost’s poetry nonetheless frequently conforms to Joseph Campbell’s well-known dictum that the primary function of mythology—and thereby all narrative art—is the inculcation from one generation to the next of the ineradicable and immutable, i.e. the reconciliation with limitations, most …

Introduction To Animal Therapy And Its Related Tax Benefits, Claudia L. Kelley, Christopher K. Eller Nov 2017

Introduction To Animal Therapy And Its Related Tax Benefits, Claudia L. Kelley, Christopher K. Eller

Journal of Counseling and Psychology

How are animals being used to improve the emotional and physical health of individuals? What are the tax implications associated with service and therapy animals? We examine these questions by providing an introduction to the subject of Animal Assisted Therapy, including how therapists and counselors are routinely using therapy animals in both individual and group treatment settings. Additionally, we discuss the potential tax savings that may be available to counselors and their clients who are using service and therapy animals. We also offer recommendations and guidance for counselors who wish to incorporate animal therapy into their treatment options.

Interactions Between Amyloid-Beta And Microglial Cells, Lisa Gouwens Nov 2017

Interactions Between Amyloid-Beta And Microglial Cells, Lisa Gouwens

Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by loss of memory and intellectual abilities. Intracellular plaques of aggregated amyloid-beta (Ab) protein are a well-known pathology associated with AD. Although symptoms usually appear late in life, the accumulation of Ab begins decades earlier and causes activation of microglia, the brain’s immune cells. The ensuing inflammation contributes significantly to neurodegeneration. Determination of the particular form of Ab that causes the most damage in the brain is one of the major questions in the AD field. My research focused on the interactions of microglia with monomers, …

Clinical Potential Of An Enzyme-Based Novel Therapy For Cocaine Overdose, Ting Zhang, Xirong Zheng, Ziyuan Zhou, Xiabin Chen, Zhenyu Jin, Jing Deng, Chang-Guo Zhan, Fang Zheng Nov 2017

Clinical Potential Of An Enzyme-Based Novel Therapy For Cocaine Overdose, Ting Zhang, Xirong Zheng, Ziyuan Zhou, Xiabin Chen, Zhenyu Jin, Jing Deng, Chang-Guo Zhan, Fang Zheng

Molecular Modeling and Biopharmaceutical Center Faculty Publications

It is a grand challenge to develop a truly effective medication for treatment of cocaine overdose. The current available, practical emergence treatment for cocaine overdose includes administration of a benzodiazepine anticonvulsant agent (e.g. diazepam) and/or physical cooling with an aim to relieve the symptoms. The inherent difficulties of antagonizing physiological effects of drugs in the central nervous system have led to exploring protein-based pharmacokinetic approaches using biologics like vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, and enzymes. However, none of the pharmacokinetic agents has demonstrated convincing preclinical evidence of clinical potential for drug overdose treatment without a question mark on the timing …

Integrating The Effects Of Salinity On The Physiology Of The Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica, In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Through A Dynamic Energy Budget Model, Romain Lavaud, Megan K. La Peyre, Sandra M. Casas, Cédric Bacher, Jérôme F. La Peyre

Faculty Publications

© 2017 We present a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model for the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, which enables the inclusion of salinity as a third environmental variable, on top of the standard foodr and temperature variables. Salinity changes have various effects on the physiology of oysters, potentially altering filtration and respiration rates, and ultimately impacting growth, reproduction and mortality. We tested different hypotheses as to how to include these effects in a DEB model for C. virginica. Specifically, we tested two potential mechanisms to explain changes in oyster shell growth (cm), tissue dry weight (g) and gonad dry weight (g) …

The Possibility Of Naturalistic Jurisprudence: Legal Positivism And Natural Law Theory Revisited, Dan Priel Nov 2017

The Possibility Of Naturalistic Jurisprudence: Legal Positivism And Natural Law Theory Revisited, Dan Priel

Articles & Book Chapters

Contemporary legal philosophy is predominantly anti-naturalistic. This is true of natural law theory, but also, more surprisingly, of legal positivism. Several prominent legal philosophers have in fact argued that the kind of questions that legal philosophers are interested in cannot be naturalized, such that a naturalistic legal philosophy is something of a contradiction in terms. Against the dominant view I argue that there are arguable naturalistic versions of both legal positivism and natural law. Much of the essay is dedicated to showing that such views are possible: I identify naturalistic versions of a “natural law” view, a “positivist” view, as …

Teachers' Experience Of A Flood In Their School Community: Their Beliefs, Perceptions, And Thoughts About Practice, Caroline Tolentino Nov 2017

Teachers' Experience Of A Flood In Their School Community: Their Beliefs, Perceptions, And Thoughts About Practice, Caroline Tolentino

LSU Master's Theses

The increasing number of flooding incidences in Louisiana exposes a significant number of children to the possible traumatic effects of this natural disaster. Flooding takes a toll not only on families and children, but on teachers as well. While the effects of other types of disasters on children have been considered in previous studies, research has not thoroughly addressed the effects of flooding on children and on early childhood teachers. Teachers can be very instrumental in helping young children cope and making sure their needs are met after the experience of a traumatic event (Perry & Szalavitz, 2008; Le Brocque, …

Issues Related To Carbon Dioxide Pipeline Transportation Infrastructure In Louisiana, Michael Allen Layne Iii Nov 2017

Issues Related To Carbon Dioxide Pipeline Transportation Infrastructure In Louisiana, Michael Allen Layne Iii

LSU Master's Theses

There is no single solution to mitigate anthropogenic climate change; a multifaceted approach with economic incentives is needed. Carbon dioxide (CO2) enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is one such solution which provides an economic incentive, in the capture and sale of oil, for sequestering CO2 underground. While carbon capture and subsequent geological injection are both mature technologies, there has been little discussion or appreciation for the role of pipelines. The current CO2 pipeline infrastructure will need to significantly expand in order to accommodate increasing EOR production. However, pipeline construction costs, and institutional factors impacting development, may be …

Fall/Winter 2017: If These Bricks Could Talk, St. Norbert College

St. Norbert College Magazine 2013-2018

Boyle Hall has seen its share of larks, learning – even love affairs. As we closed in on the venerable landmark’s first century (celebrated at the start of this semester) we invited members of the St. Norbert community to share their memories of a building in which every living alum of the college has taken at least one class. We enjoyed these so much – romances, follies, lessons for a lifetime, a poem – that we thought you should see them, too. And, we would like to hear your own experiences of a building that first opened its doors to …
