Pam-1 Localizations In The Regulation Of Autophagy During Caenorhabditis Elegans Oogenesis, Ashley N. Munie
Pam-1 Localizations In The Regulation Of Autophagy During Caenorhabditis Elegans Oogenesis, Ashley N. Munie
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
Autophagy, the cell's recycling system, is a highly-conserved survival mechanism of the cell. Autophagy has been implicated in the mediation of the removal of cytotoxic aggregates, such as those linked to neurodegenerative disorders like Huntington and Alzheimer disease. Studies in several model organisms have identified numerous genes involved in mediating autophagy, including the Puromycin sensitive aminopeptidase (Psa). The Caenorhabditis elegans orthologue of Psa, pam-1, also governs fertility. Along with apoptosis, a form of regulated cell death, autophagy has been found to be required for efficient C. elegans oogenesis. When autophagy is suppressed through RNAi in worms harboring …

Effects Of Human Cadaveric Dissections In High School Biology, Brandi Pratt, James Martinez, Regina Suriel, Ellice P. Martin
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
This study was conducted in a suburban public high school, which had a connection to the local university, to measure the achievement of dual enrollment senior students using traditional hands-on (THO) cadaveric dissections compared to non-traditional (NT) virtual dissections of the human body. The outcomes of this study may assist multicultural science educators and administrators, students and parents, to understand the importance of THO cadaveric dissections compared to NT virtual dissections tools in learning gross anatomy. Also, noted is the importance of public and higher education collaboration to help bridge the science resource gaps between educational settings.

“We Ain’T Come Over Here For That!”: Critical Moments On Racial Identity Development While Learning And Serving In Tanzania, Mariah Bender, Stephanie L. Burrell Storms
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
In this narrative two Black women, one a recent college graduate and the other a tenured college professor from Jesuit institutions describe their experiences studying and engaging in service while in Tanzania. Both provide snapshots illustrating how engaging in heritage seeking while experiencing whiteness affected their racial identity development. Recommendations are included for students and faculty planning future study abroad and service trips in an international context with peers from different racial backgrounds.

Human Brain Transcriptome Profiles In Obesity, Chun Wu
Human Brain Transcriptome Profiles In Obesity, Chun Wu
Open Access Dissertations
Obesity is one of the leading causes of global deaths. WHO estimates that 39% of adults over 18 years of age are overweight (BMI ≥ 25kg/m2) and, currently 13% meet criteria for obesity (BMI ≥ 30kg/m2). Increased food-energy supply and a mismatched biological response patterns that evolved in a scare environment, were suggested to be major drivers of the obesity epidemic. The palatable energy dense food is excessively consumed for its hedonic characteristics; its ubiquitous availability has increased the relevance of brain reward systems in controlling food intake. Increasing evidence shows that obesity shares many mechanisms with addiction. Food addiction …

Multimodal In Situ Datalogging Quantifies Inter-Individual Variation In Thermal Experience And Persistent Origin Effects On Gaping Behavior Among Intertidal Mussels (Mytilus Californianus), Luke P. Miller, Wesley Dowd
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
In complex habitats, environmental variation over small spatial scales can equal or exceed larger-scale gradients. This small-scale variation may allow motile organisms to mitigate stressful conditions by choosing benign microhabitats, whereas sessile organisms may rely on other behaviors to cope with environmental stresses in these variable environments. We developed a monitoring system to track body temperature, valve gaping behavior and posture of individual mussels (Mytilus californianus) in field conditions in the rocky intertidal zone. Neighboring mussels' body temperatures varied by up to 14°C during low tides. Valve gaping during low tide and postural adjustments, which could theoretically lower …

Radiocarbon Chronology Of Manot Cave, Israel And Upper Paleolithic Dispersals, Bridget Alex, Omry Barzilai, Israel Hershkovitz
KIP Articles
The timing of archeological industries in the Levant is central for understanding the spread of modern humans with Upper Paleolithic traditions. We report a high-resolution radiocarbon chronology for Early Upper Paleolithic industries (Early Ahmarian and Levantine Aurignacian) from the newly excavated site of Manot Cave, Israel. The dates confirm that the Early Ahmarian industry was present by 46,000 calibrated years before the present (cal BP), and the Levantine Aurignacian occurred at least between 38,000 and 34,000 cal BP. This timing is consistent with proposed migrations or technological diffusions between the Near East and Europe. Specifically, the Ahmarian could have led …

Post-Transcriptional Regulation Of Addiction-Related Behaviors: Opposing Roles Of Nucleus Accumbens Mir-495 And Hud, Robert J. Oliver Jr.
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Substance use Disorders (SUDs) are characterized by chronic relapse after periods without symptoms. This has been hypothesized to stem from persistent alterations in corticolimbic circuit function and structure caused by drug-induced alterations in addiction-related gene (ARG) expression. Transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of ARGs and addiction-like behaviors have been well characterized but the role of post-transcriptional regulation is an understudied, yet promising field. RNA binding proteins (RBPs) are one post-transcriptional regulator of mRNA stability. HuD is a neuronal specific RBP that stabilizes mRNAs and is regulated by neuronal activity and cocaine. Another type of post-transcriptional regulator, microRNAs (miRNAs), are non-coding RNAs …

Purpose: Current clinical parameters do not stratify indolent from aggressive prostate cancer. Aggressive prostate cancer, defined by the progression from localized disease to metastasis, is responsible for the majority of prostate cancer–associated mortality. Recent gene expression profiling has proven successful in predicting the outcome of prostate cancer patients; however, they have yet to provide targeted therapy approaches that could inhibit a patient's progression to metastatic disease. Experimental Design: We have interrogated a total of seven primary prostate cancer cohorts (n = 1,900), two metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer datasets (n = 293), and one prospective cohort (n = 1,385) to assess …

Mode Of Delivery And Child And Adolescent Psychological Well-Being: Evidence From Hong Kong’S “Children Of 1997” Birth Cohort, Cherry Y. Leung, Gabriel M. Leung, C. Mary Schooling
Publications and Research
Mode of delivery (vaginal or cesarean section) is thought to affect gut microbiota, which in turn may affect psychological well-being. As such, mode of delivery is potentially a modifiable factor for psychological well-being. Here we examined the association of mode of delivery with child and adolescent psychological well-being. We used multivariable linear regression in a populationrepresentative Hong Kong Chinese birth cohort, “Children of 1997,” to examine the adjusted associations of mode of delivery with behavioral problems assessed from parent-reported Rutter score at ~7 (n = 6294) and ~11 years (n = 5598), self-esteem assessed from self-reported Culture-Free Self- Esteem Inventory …

Reliably providing safe drinking water to the public is an essential function of state and local governments. Across the United States, government officials and public water system managers are exploring mechanisms for ensuring water security. One method for increasing public drinking water security that has garnered the attention of water officials and the public is returning treated wastewater to the drinking water supply. However, in the absence of federal regulations on water reuse, states need guidance to develop the statutory framework necessary to make potable reuse legal. This Article details the processes of direct and indirect potable reuse and reviews …

Occurrence Of Putative Endornaviruses In Non-Cultivated Plant Species And Characterization Of A Novel Endornavirus In Geranium Carolinianum, Rachel Herschlag
Occurrence Of Putative Endornaviruses In Non-Cultivated Plant Species And Characterization Of A Novel Endornavirus In Geranium Carolinianum, Rachel Herschlag
LSU Master's Theses
Endornaviruses are RNA viruses, which can infect plants yet cause no apparent symptoms. To date, most descriptions of endornaviruses infecting plants have been in cultivated species. A survey for endornaviruses in non-cultivated plants was initiated in 2015 and continued through 2017 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Two hundred and seven plant species were tested for distinctive dsRNA profiles by selective extraction and gel electrophoresis, of which seven contained endornavirus-like dsRNA. RT-PCR amplification of an endornavirus-specific sequence supported the endornavirus nature of six of the seven samples. Of the six host species, one species, Geranium carolinianum was confirmed as being infected with …
Scaling Relationships Between Cranial Morphological Features And Cranial Capacity In Modern Humans, Jacob Jesch
Scaling Relationships Between Cranial Morphological Features And Cranial Capacity In Modern Humans, Jacob Jesch
LSU Master's Theses
Certain cranial morphologies referred to here as “cranial predictor features” are known to allometrically scale with body mass at statistically significant levels. Brain size likewise is known to scale with body mass, with brain-to-body-mass ratio being expressed numerically via the encephalization quotient. The study at hand aims to demonstrate whether brain size via its skeletal proxy of cranial capacity also scales with cranial predictor features. Correlation analysis was employed on two samples of contemporary male and female modern humans, respectively, in order to determine the statistical significance and degree of association between cranial predictor features and cranial capacity, as well …

“Corbyn’S Memory Of The Halloween Slenderman Scare”, Haden Griggs
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
So, the way I remember it, which-- [I ask when this happened] Uh, this had to have been when I was in ninth grade, so, [inaudible] four or five years ago? Yeah, so basically I was just, staying at home, handing out candy on Halloween, and, when my friend stopped by, with his, I think, he had his younger brother there at the same time. And so, I went, and, to hand him candy, and then I turned around for something and I turned back, and there was someone else that I hadn’t seen on the doorstep, dressed as Slenderman. …
