Sleep And Alzheimer’S Disease: A Critical Examination Of The Risk That Sleep Problems Or Disorders Particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnea Pose Towards Developing Alzheimer’S Disease, Omonigho A. Michael Bubu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a critical examination of the relationship between sleep problems and/or disorders, particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Alzheimer Disease (AD). First, I conducted an exhaustive systematic review of existing literature, and identified gaps in research that led to specific research aims. For the first aim, I conducted the first ever-published meta-analysis examining sleep, cognitive decline and AD, providing an aggregate effect of sleep on AD. Second, focusing on OSA, I conducted a study examining OSA’s effect on longitudinal changes on AD biomarkers in cognitive normal, MCI and AD subjects, using data from the Alzheimer Disease Neuroimaging Initiative …

Using Green Messages To Cue Recycling Tendencies, Danielle Quichocho Nov 2017

Using Green Messages To Cue Recycling Tendencies, Danielle Quichocho

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recycling of common plastics is a practical way to limit the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, and eventually contributes to various forms of pollution. However, statistics indicate that it is not currently a normalized, prioritized behavior. A pilot study indicated that relying only on preexisting frameworks such as the Elaboration Likelihood Model to understand consumer perceptions simply does not encompass the scope of the topic. Consumer experiences with green messages, especially in the current climate of a saturated advertising market are incredibly complex. Understanding these experiences is also currently being impeded by inconsistencies in how researchers in …

Glomerular Hyperfiltration And Hypertension In Diabetes, Jie Zhang Nov 2017

Glomerular Hyperfiltration And Hypertension In Diabetes, Jie Zhang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, we investigated the pathophysiological mechanisms of the hemodynamic alteration in diabetes. Glomerular hyperfiltration occurs in the early stage of diabetes mellitus and has been recognized to promote the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. We determine the role of TGF response and the vascular tone of Af-Art in diabetic hyperfiltration and we found that 1) tubular high glucose directly activates NOS1 and increases NO generation in the macula densa, which inhibits TGF response and increases GFR; 2) high glucose dilates renal Af-Art through GLUT1 and mediated by NOS3-derived NO generation; 3) in diabetes, blunted TGF mediated by NOS1 …

The Effects Of Delayed Timeout, Delayed Timeout With Rule, And Immediate Timeout On Shape Choosing Behaviors, Mallory Alyse Garrett Nov 2017

The Effects Of Delayed Timeout, Delayed Timeout With Rule, And Immediate Timeout On Shape Choosing Behaviors, Mallory Alyse Garrett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The possibility of using a delayed consequence has great potential for parents, educators, and behavior analysts who are looking for effective methods to reduce problem behavior. In some situations, it may be difficult or even impossible for caregivers to administer timeout immediately following an instance of problem behavior due to practical constraints (e.g., being in a public place or not having sufficient staffing). In such cases, a delayed timeout procedure could have some advantages. If effective in reducing behavior, delayed timeout would add an important option to the arsenal of professionals tasked with addressing these challenges, particularly in settings where …

Observations On The Puddling Behavior Of The Canadian Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, Papilio Glaucus Canadensis In Northern Michigan, J. Mark Scriber, Matthew P. Ayres Nov 2017

Observations On The Puddling Behavior Of The Canadian Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, Papilio Glaucus Canadensis In Northern Michigan, J. Mark Scriber, Matthew P. Ayres

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

The occurrence of "puddling" behavior in Lepidoptera has been reviewed by M. J. Norris (1936) by J. A. Downes (1973) and by P. H. Adler (1982). Butterflies have been previously reported on mammalian dung, urine, perspiration, saliva, salt, blood, campfire ashes, aphid honeydew, tree sap and animal carrion. The rarity of female puddling in butterflies, particularly the tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) has been recently addressed by two studies (Berger and Lederhouse 1985, Scriber 1987).

Use Of Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay To Screen For Aflatoxins, Ochratoxin A, And Deoxynivalenol In Dry Pet Foods, Tara A. Okuma, Thu P. Huynh, Rosalee S. Hellberg

Food Science Faculty Articles and Research

The objective of this study was to perform a market survey on dry pet foods using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect total aflatoxins (AFs), ochratoxin A (OTA), and deoxynivalenol (DON). Pet food products (n = 58) marketed for dogs, cats, birds, and rabbits were tested in duplicate with ELISA, and results above the limit of quantitation were confirmed using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). OTA was detected in one product (rabbit food) and AFs were detected in two products (one dog treat and one bird treat). In contrast, DON was detected in the majority (74%) of products …

Ethical Veganism, Virtue, And Greatness Of The Soul, Carlo Alvaro Nov 2017

Ethical Veganism, Virtue, And Greatness Of The Soul, Carlo Alvaro

Publications and Research

Many moral philosophers have criticized intensive animal farming because it can be harmful to the environment, it causes pain and misery to a large number of animals, and furthermore eating meat and animal-based products can be unhealthful. The issue of industrially farmed animals has become one of the most pressing ethical questions of our time. On the one hand, utilitarians have argued that we should become vegetarians or vegans because the practices of raising animals for food are immoral since they minimize the overall happiness. Deontologists, on the other hand, have argued that the practices of raising animals for food …

While the prevalence of osteoporosis is growing rapidly with population aging, therapeutic options remain limited. Here, we identify potentially novel roles for CaV1.2 L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channels in osteogenesis and exploit a transgenic gain-of-function mutant CaV1.2 to stem bone loss in ovariectomized female mice. We show that endogenous CaV1.2 is expressed in developing bone within proliferating chondrocytes and osteoblasts. Using primary BM stromal cell (BMSC) cultures, we found that Ca2+ influx through CaV1.2 activates osteogenic transcriptional programs and promotes mineralization. We used Prx1-, Col2a1-, or Col1a1-Cre drivers to express an inactivation-deficient CaV1.2 mutant in chondrogenic and/or osteogenic precursors in vivo …

Managing Cities As Urban Ecosystems: Fundamentals And A Framework For Los Angeles, California, Isaac T. Brown Nov 2017

Managing Cities As Urban Ecosystems: Fundamentals And A Framework For Los Angeles, California, Isaac T. Brown

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Ecosystem-based frameworks offer a robust platform for managing complex ecological challenges associated with land management. Actionable frameworks for urban ecosystems are just emerging, and the purpose of this essay is to support advancing application in city management contexts. Comprehensive urban ecosystem frameworks have the potential to synergize interrelated, yet often siloed, urban environmental management themes including urban biodiversity and natural features, pollution management, ecosystem services enhancement, and natural hazards; particularly as urban sustainability, resiliency, and infrastructure initiatives increasingly reshape cities and elevate consideration of these topics. This essay begins with a review of fundamentals of urban ecosystems across multiple relevant …

@Potus: Rethinking Presidential Immunity In The Time Of Twitter, Douglas B. Mckechnie Nov 2017

@Potus: Rethinking Presidential Immunity In The Time Of Twitter, Douglas B. Mckechnie

University of Miami Law Review

President Donald Trump’s use of Twitter portends a turning point in presidential communication. His Tweets animate his base and enrage his opponents. Tweets, however, like any form of communication, can ruin reputations. In Nixon v. Fitzgerald, the Supreme Court determined that a president retains absolute immunity for all actions that fall within the “outer perimeter” of his official duties. This Article explores the “outer perimeter” of presidential immunity. It suggests the First, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendments inform the demarcation of the “outer perimeter,” and that when a president engages in malicious defamation, his speech falls outside this perimeter and …

A Study Of The Urban Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes) Population In Baton Rouge, Louisiana Using Social Media, Ahsennur Soysal

LSU Master's Theses

Foxes are timid yet resourceful animals that are integrated into many urban environments. Because they are elusive, collecting information about the number of urban foxes, their diet and spatial distribution, their interactions with the ecological community in their urban habitat, as well as residents’ response to them, is difficult. Involving stakeholders to participate in the data collection on wildlife via citizen science on social media is one way to overcome this complication, while simultaneously engaging residents in the ecology happening around them. Therefore, we used social media as the platform to engage the public to document and map the foxes …

Folie Et Stratégies D'Évasion Dans Les Romans Postcoloniaux Au Maghreb (Maroc-Algérie) Et À L'Île Maurice, Fouzilla Saady

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

My dissertation " Folie et stratégies d'évasion dans les romans postcoloniaux au Maghreb (Maroc-Algérie) et à l'Île Maurice." argues that madness is a universal theme in the postcolonial context by Maghrebian and Mauritian women authors such as Nadia Chafik, Leïla Marouane, Nina Bouraoui, Ananda Devi, Nathacha Appanah, Marie-Thérèse Humbert. We include Tahar Ben Jelloun, Patrick Chamoiseau and Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio because of their approach to gender, feminine and masculine.

This research is not a question of making a psychoanalytic study of madness, but of a literary analysis of this theme in the texts of our corpus. We focus on …

The abundance and the presence of common cuckoos Cuculus canorus have been shown to predict species richness of birds across Europe, while there are no such analyses available for other continents where species richness of parasitic cuckoos is larger. Here, we tested whether species richness of birds increased with the number of cuckoo species in two study areas in China and one in Japan. We also tested whether species richness of birds can be predicted by the number of cuckoo individuals. Furthermore, we compared the strength of association between overall bird species richness and species richness of cuckoos, Paridae, Corvidae, …

Ecological Epigenetics Of Avian Range Expansions, Holly J. Kilvitis Nov 2017

Ecological Epigenetics Of Avian Range Expansions, Holly J. Kilvitis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In light of human-mediated environmental change, a fundamental goal for biologists is to determine which phenotypic characteristics enable some individuals, populations or species to be more adept at coping with such change, while rendering others more vulnerable. Studying ongoing range expansions provide a unique opportunity to address this question by allowing documentation of how novel environments shape phenotypic variation on ecological timescales. At range-edges, individuals are exposed to strong selective pressures and population genetic challenges (e.g. bottlenecks and/or founder effects), which make genetic adaptation difficult. Nevertheless, certain species, such as the house sparrow (Passer domesticus), seem to thrive in their …

Ambient Ozone And Cadmium As Risk Factors For Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, Rema Ramakrishnan Nov 2017

Ambient Ozone And Cadmium As Risk Factors For Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, Rema Ramakrishnan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) results from a defect in the diaphragm through which abdominal contents enter the thorax displacing the heart and the lungs. This causes lung hypoplasia and varying degrees of pulmonary hypertension resulting in high rates of morbidity and mortality. Though CDH has a prevalence rate of 2.61 per 10,000 live births it is an expensive birth defect with an estimated annual cost of nearly $250 million for all CDH survivors. Maternal exposure to air pollutants have not been studied as risk factors for CDH in humans. Ambient ozone has been found to be risk factors for certain …

Contributions Of Appetitive And Aversive Motivational Systems To Decision-Making, Heather E. Soder Nov 2017

Contributions Of Appetitive And Aversive Motivational Systems To Decision-Making, Heather E. Soder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Optimal decision-making entails outcome evaluation, comparing received costs and benefits with predicted costs and benefits. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a brain area with major connections to the appetitive and aversive motivation systems, may provide the neural substrate of this evaluation process. One way to measure the relative contribution of these systems on decision-making is to measure individual differences in risk-taking behaviors. For individuals who make risky choices, this evaluation step may be biased: some show a preference for immediate, short-term rewards (increased appetitive system), while devaluing the long-term consequences of their choices (decreased aversive system). However, most studies supporting …

Influence Two Compositional Changes On In Vitro Properties Of An Antibiotic-Loaded Acrylic Bone Cement, Robert Baker Mckee Nov 2017

Influence Two Compositional Changes On In Vitro Properties Of An Antibiotic-Loaded Acrylic Bone Cement, Robert Baker Mckee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

It has been postulated that the high temperature reached during the polymerization of acrylic bone (for some brands, as high as 85 oC) (Tmax) may cause thermal necrosis of tissues close to the implant. In the present work, two methods to reducing Tmax were studied: change to the composition of the cement powder (by addition of 5-25 wt./wt.% microencapsulated phase change material) and a change to the composition of the cement liquid (by addition of a 1-3 vol./vol.% chain-stopping agent, namely, dodecyl mercaptan). The control cement was a commercially-available gentamicin-loaded brand. All cements were vacuum mixed. Eight other clinically-relevant properties …

Protein Tyrosine Signaling And Its Potential Therapeutic Implications In Carcinogenesis, Mihwa Kim, Minwoo Baek, Dae Joon Kim Nov 2017

Protein Tyrosine Signaling And Its Potential Therapeutic Implications In Carcinogenesis, Mihwa Kim, Minwoo Baek, Dae Joon Kim

School of Medicine Publications

Protein tyrosine phosphorylation is a crucial signaling mechanism that plays a role in epithelial carcinogenesis. Protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) control various cellular processes including growth, differentiation, metabolism, and motility by activating major signaling pathways including STAT3, AKT, and MAPK. Genetic mutation of PTKs and/or prolonged activation of PTKs and their downstream pathways can lead to the development of epithelial cancer. Therefore, PTKs became an attractive target for cancer prevention. PTK inhibitors are continuously being developed, and they are currently used for the treatment of cancers that show a high expression of PTKs. Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs), the homeostatic counterpart of …
