Foodplant Processing Adaptations In Four Hyalophora Species (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae): Regional And Taxonomic Specialization, J. Mark Scriber, Eric Grabstein
Foodplant Processing Adaptations In Four Hyalophora Species (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae): Regional And Taxonomic Specialization, J. Mark Scriber, Eric Grabstein
The Great Lakes Entomologist
To determine whether local populations of four Hyalophora species (Lepidoptera: Satumiidae) had improved survival or were physiologically adapted for rapid and/or efficient growth on their local hosts, a series of larval feeding studies were conducted using gravimetric techniques on several host plant species. Significantly better survival and growth performances were observed for H. columbia (a tamarack specialist) on its host, Larix laricina. Similarly, H. gloveri had the best growth performance on Elaeagnus angustifolia (its favorite) as did certain sympatric populations of H. cecropia on black cherry, Prunus serotina. Hyalophora gloveri and H. columbia are largely sympatric with Betula papyrifera …

The Diversity, Costs, And Benefits Of Shelters Built By Lepidopteran Caterpillars In A Costa Rican Dry Forest, Christina Baer
The Diversity, Costs, And Benefits Of Shelters Built By Lepidopteran Caterpillars In A Costa Rican Dry Forest, Christina Baer
Dissertations
Thousands of Lepidoptera species build shelters as caterpillars using plant material and their own silk. Although these caterpillars and their shelters are recognized as playing important ecological roles, the structural diversity of shelters and the costs and benefits of different shelters to their builders are still poorly understood. In this dissertation, I use natural history observations, observational and manipulative field projects, and molecular and phylogenetic tools to investigate these questions for a diverse and abundant shelter-building caterpillar community within the dry forest of Palo Verde National Park, Costa Rica. In Chapter 1, I develop a system for categorizing and describing …

Applying Topographic Classification, Based On The Hydrological Process, To Design Habitat Linkages For Climate Change, Yongwon Mo, Dong Kun Lee, Keunyea Song, Ho Gul Kim, Soo Jin Park
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The use of biodiversity surrogates has been discussed in the context of designing habitat linkages to support the migration of species affected by climate change. Topography has been proposed as a useful surrogate in the coarse-filter approach, as the hydrological process caused by topography such as erosion and accumulation is the basis of ecological processes. However, some studies that have designed topographic linkages as habitat linkages, so far have focused much on the shape of the topography (morphometric topographic classification) with little emphasis on the hydrological processes (generic topographic classification) to find such topographic linkages. We aimed to understand whether …

[Kay]: Ok so when I was younger and my grandparents still raised me there was a saying where when we wake up to random bruises it's called ghost bites in translation and basically we don't know where the bruises come from and so that's why we call it ghost bites because you sleep and then you wake up with bruises like somewhere strange so that's our thing about ghost bites
[Me]: Was it just your grandparents or your parents that said it or do you know if other families said it?
[Kay]: I asked my friend about it too and …

Epithelial sodium channels (ENaC) play an important role in re-absorbing excessive luminal fluid by building up an osmotic Na+ gradient across the tight epithelium in the airway, the lung, the kidney, and the colon. The ENaC is a major pathway for retention of salt in kidney too. MicroRNAs (miRs), a group of non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level, have emerged as a novel class of regulators for ENaC. Given the ENaC pathway is crucial for maintaining fluid homeostasis in the lung and the kidney and other cavities, we summarized the cross-talk between ENaC and miRs and …

We examined the effect of chronic prenatal alcohol exposure on certain neuronal systems involved with the sleep-wake cycle of C57BL/6J mice exposed to prenatal alcohol once they had reached 56 days post-natal. Pregnant mice were exposed to alcohol, through oral gavage, on gestational days 7–16, with recorded blood alcohol concentration (BAC)s averaging 1.84 mg/ml (chronic alcohol group, CA). Two control groups, an oral gavage sucrose control group (chronic alcohol control group, CAc) and a non-treated control group (NTc), were also examined. At 56 days post-natal, the pups from each group were sacrificed and the whole brain sectioned in a coronal …

[Me]: So do you want to tell me a little bit about the dragonfly story you were telling me earlier?
[Kay]: Ok so when I was younger my grandparents would tell me that I needed to swim and they threatened all the children to ugh catch a dragonfly they'll use the dragonfly and put it on your belly button and let it bite us until we could swim and [pauses] I am terrified until now about dragonflies [laughs]
[Me]: you don't like dragonflies? [Kay]: I don't like dragonflies. yep

Estimating The Range Shift And Harvesting Intensity Of Junipers In Bhutan (Eastern Himalaya), Rinchen Namgay
Estimating The Range Shift And Harvesting Intensity Of Junipers In Bhutan (Eastern Himalaya), Rinchen Namgay
Theses
The authors of more than 97% of the scientific publications on climate change agree that global temperature has increased in the last six decades and is caused by human beings via emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This phenomenon has altered natural ecosystem functions, causing many species to shift to a more suitable habitat. Throughout the world, because of recent climate warming, many forms of range shift associated with climate warming has occurred. While animals can move as warming happens, plants being stationary organisms cannot move, so the difference in the distribution of different plant life stages is an …

Rhipicephalus turanicus is an important tick species potentially carrying tickborne pathogens. Several tick species have obvious subspecies divergence. However few studies aimed to examine the existence of divergence within R. turanicus. Therefore, a detailed morphological and molecular analysis was conducted for comparing R. turanicus from the Mediterranean Basin (represented by Albania) and Central Asia (Northwestern China). Altogether 315 adult ticks of R. turanicus (103 from Albania and 212 from China) were morphologically and molecularly analysed. DNA samples were used for mitochondrial 16S rRNA and cox1 gene sequences analysis. In addition, as potentially genetic markers, three fragments including partial nad1-16S …

This thesis discusses the relationship between presence and void in relation to two pieces being found within one. A product of my upbringing, the monotony and multiples gave me the opportunity to continue my pattern of processing personal emotions through the artistic process. Very physically and conceptually fluid, the pieces are all visually singular with ties to architecture or city planning as well as influences from other artists that work with positive and negative.

Forest and Society
Opium poppy cultivation in Thailand fell from 12,112 hectares in 1961 to 281 ha in 2015. One outlier exists: Chiang Mai province’s remote southwestern district, Omkoi. 90% of the district is a national forest reserve where human habitation is illegal. However, an ethnic Karen population has lived there since long before the law that outlawed them was created, unconnected to the state by road, with limited or no access to health, education and other services: they cultivate the majority of Thailand’s known opium poppy, because they have little other choice. They increasingly rely on cash-based markets, their lack of citizenship …

The Qualitative Report
Using visual and ethnographic methods the author forms a connection between materiality and the memories of childhood. The researcher begins by asking the question, “Can a studio environment create encounters between a researcher and preschool children that deepen understanding of culture?” To this end, the researcher engaged in sensory research practices through ethnographic methods in a preschool art studio. Through free choice art making, children were found expressing their emotions and demonstrating an awareness of adult culture. In particular, the researcher’s encounter with four-year old George was enriched through sensory participation and triggered embodied and empathetic knowing. As it happens, …

Classification Of Daily Activities For The Elderly Using Wearable Sensors, Jian Liu, Jeehoon Sohn, Sukwon Kim
Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research
Monitoring of activities of daily living (ADL) using wearable sensors can provide an objective indication of the activity levels or restrictions experienced by patients or elderly. The current study presented a two-sensor ADL classification method designed and tested specifically with elderly subjects. Ten healthy elderly were involved in a laboratory testing with 6 types of daily activities. Two inertial measurement units were attached to the thigh and the trunk of each subject. The results indicated an overall rate of misdetection being 2.8%. The findings of the current study can be used as the first step towards a more comprehensive activity …

Statistical Optimization Of The Induction Of Phytase Production By Arabinose In A Recombinant E. Coli Using Response Surface Methodology, Farouk Abd-El Aziem, Hussin Anis Shobirin Meor, Greiner Ralf, Ismail Shareef Mohideen, Lubis Hamadah Mohd Nur
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The production of phytase in a recombinant E.coli using the pBAD expression system was optimized using response surface methodology with full-factorial faced centered central composite design. The ampicilin and arabinose concentration in the cultivation media and the incubation temperature were optimized in order to maximize phytase production using 2 3 central composite experimental design. With this design the number of actual experiment performed could be reduced while allowing eludidation of possible interactions among these factors. The most significant parameter was shown to be the linear and quadratic effect of the incubation temperature. Optimal conditions for phytase production were determined to …
