The Frame Retardant, Mechanical Properties, Thermal Properties And Permeability Of Biodegradable Polymers, Xianghao Zuo
The Frame Retardant, Mechanical Properties, Thermal Properties And Permeability Of Biodegradable Polymers, Xianghao Zuo
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Nano-particles are great additives to the thermal properties of the polymers, however, they sometimes have some disadvantages on the mechanical properties. The mixing of polymers and nano-particles such as cloisite clays, graphene, melamine polyphosphate and molybdenum disulfide, are mostly physical reactions between them. Therefore, the dispersion of the nano-particles inside the polymers is very important. As for the frame retardant of the polymers, the additives are used as three most important components during the mixing, i.e. the acid source, the carbonization agent (or char forming agent), and a blowing agent. The better the particles disperse in the polymer, the easier …

Farm Work Injuries Among A Cohort Of Children In Kentucky, Usa, Steven R. Browning, Susan C. Westneat, Deborah B. Reed
Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications
Children residing on farms with livestock may be at an increased risk for work-related injuries, compared to children who work on other commodity farms. This study characterizes children's work tasks on Kentucky farms and assesses whether children who work on beef cattle farms are at an increased risk for farm work injuries. The results of a cohort study of children aged 5-18 years (N=999 at baseline) working on family farms in Kentucky, followed for two consecutive years after an initial enumeration five years previously, found that 70% of the children were involved in animal-related chores. Across all age groups, children …
Procedural Generation And Rendering Of Large-Scale Open-World Environments, Ian Thomas Dunn
Procedural Generation And Rendering Of Large-Scale Open-World Environments, Ian Thomas Dunn
Master's Theses
Open-world video games give players a large environment to explore along with increased freedom to navigate and manipulate that environment. These requirements pose several problems that must be addressed by a game's graphics engine. Often there are a large number of visible objects, such as all of the trees in a forest, as well as objects comprised of large amounts of geometry, such as terrain. An open-world graphics engine must be able to render large environments at varying levels of detail and smoothly transition between detail levels to provide a believable experience. Often this involves finding a way to both …
Circadian And Circatidal Rhythms Of Protein Abundance In The Intertidal Mussel Mytilus Californianus, Cory Elowe
Circadian And Circatidal Rhythms Of Protein Abundance In The Intertidal Mussel Mytilus Californianus, Cory Elowe
Master's Theses
The intertidal zone is a dynamic environment that fluctuates with the 12.4-h tidal and 24-h light/dark cycle to predictably alter food availability, temperature, air exposure, wave action, oxygen partial pressure, and osmotic conditions. Intertidal sessile bivalves exhibit behavioral or physiological changes to minimize the persistent challenges of fluctuating environmental conditions, such as adjusting gaping behavior and heart rate. At the cellular level, transcriptomic studies on mussels’ baseline circadian and circatidal rhythms have determined that the circadian rhythm is the dominant transcriptional rhythm. However, as proteins reflect the basic molecular phenotype of an organism and their abundance may differ greatly from …
Integration And Qualification Of The P-Pods On The Vega Maiden Flight, Ryan Nugent
Integration And Qualification Of The P-Pods On The Vega Maiden Flight, Ryan Nugent
Master's Theses
On February 13, 2012, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo flew three Poly-Picosatellite Orbital Deployers (P-PODs), carrying seven European University CubeSats sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA), on the Vega Maiden Flight. This was the first time CubeSats shared a ride to space with other payloads on an ESA-owned launch opportunity. In order to meet launch requirements, it must be proven through proper documentation that the P-POD would operate properly and not interfere with the launch vehicle or other payloads on the mission. This thesis outlines the program flow, required documentation, and issues encountered during the launch campaign …
Torsional Stiffness And Natural Frequency Analysis Of A Formula Sae Vehicle Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Chassis Using Finite Element Analysis, Manuel Herrmann
Torsional Stiffness And Natural Frequency Analysis Of A Formula Sae Vehicle Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Chassis Using Finite Element Analysis, Manuel Herrmann
Master's Theses
Finite element is used to predict the torsional stiffness and natural frequency response of a FSAE vehicle hybrid chassis, utilizing a carbon fiber reinforced polymer sandwich structure monocoque and a tubular steel spaceframe. To accurately model the stiffness response of the sandwich structure, a series of material tests for different fiber types has been performed and the material properties have been validated by modeling a simple three-point-bend test panel and comparing the results with a physical test. The torsional stiffness model of the chassis was validated with a physical test, too. The stiffness prediction matches the test results within 6%. …

The Coat Protein And Nia Protease Of Two Potyviridae Family Members Independently Confer Superinfection Exclusion, Satyanarayana Tatineni, Roy French
The Coat Protein And Nia Protease Of Two Potyviridae Family Members Independently Confer Superinfection Exclusion, Satyanarayana Tatineni, Roy French
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Superinfection exclusion (SIE) is an antagonistic virus-virus interaction whereby initial infection by one virus prevents subsequent infection by closely related viruses. Although SIE has been described in diverse viruses infecting plants, humans, and animals, its mechanisms, including involvement of specific viral determinants, are just beginning to be elucidated. In this study, SIE determinants encoded by two economically important wheat viruses, Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV; genus Tritimovirus, family Potyviridae) and Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV; genus Poacevirus, family Potyviridae), were identified in gain-of-function experiments that used heterologous viruses to express individual virus-encoded proteins in wheat. Wheat plants infected …

Examining Illness Invalidation And Illness Perception In Relation To Physical Functioning In The Context Of Cardiovascular Disease, Jaclyn Ciera Turner
Examining Illness Invalidation And Illness Perception In Relation To Physical Functioning In The Context Of Cardiovascular Disease, Jaclyn Ciera Turner
USC Aiken Psychology Theses
Invalidation is defined as the perception of cognitive, affective, and behavioral responses of others that are experienced as denying, lecturing, overprotecting, not supporting, and not acknowledging with the respect to the condition of the patient (Kool, 2012). Invalidation has also been suggested to negatively impact patients’ physical health (Kool, 2012). One specific type of invalidation is illness invalidation (II), defined as attitudes of distrust, suspicion, lack of support for, or acknowledgement that a patient is suffering from an illness (Blom et al., 2011). In addition to II, illness perception (IP) is another construct that has been linked to negative physical …

Design And Deployment Of A Real Time Wireless Controller For An Active Angle Foot Orthosis, Mary Ann George
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
The complex ankle foot movements of patients suffering from muscular and neurological abnormalities are supported and restored by an active ankle foot orthosis (AFO). Foot drop is a symptom in which the muscles around the ankle become weak due to the paralysis of the neural system. Patients with foot drop show abnormal gait patterns, which can reduce the speed of walking and increase the energy consumption. The gait pattern deviation in patients with foot drop can be corrected by designing a fuzzy controller for gait pattern. This paper focuses on designing a fuzzy controller for an active AFO that can …

A Cost-Effective Braille Printer: Aiding The Visually Impaired, Palash Thakur
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
A pervasively high level of braille illiteracy has hampered heavily the large number of partially or completely visually impaired persons in today’s society, their integration into society as productive, educated, and capable members. This problem is further compounded by the fact that the braille printers are prohibitively expensive – generally starting from two thousand US dollars, beyond the reach of a common person. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a highly cost-effective Braille printer primarily utilizing an Atmel AVR microcontroller (ATMega 32a) and servomotors acting as rotary and linear actuators, coupled with gears. The printer can be controlled …

As the costs of pharmaceutical research and development rise and concerns grow about the pace of innovation, both federal agencies and industry participants have turned to new forms of collaboration to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of biomedical research. Industry participants, many of them competitors, come together to define joint research and development objectives and to share project results in what are widely known as “pre-competitive” collaborations. There is a prevailing understanding among both industry and governmental actors that these pre-competitive endeavors are not only permissible, but encouraged. While the term “pre-competitive” is prevalent in the pharmaceutical industry, it is …

© 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. Paternally expressed gene 3 (Peg3) encodes a DNA-binding protein with 12 C2H2 zinc finger motifs. In the current study, we performed ChIP-seq using mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) cells. This experiment identified a set of 16 PEG3 genomic targets, the majority of which overlapped with the promoter regions of genes with oocyte expression. These potential downstream genes were upregulated in MEF cells lacking PEG3 protein, suggesting a potential repressor role for PEG3. Our study also identified the imprinting control region (ICR) of H19 as a genomic target. According to the results, PEG3 binds to …
