The Role Of Nanofillers In Polymer Nanocomposites, Di Xu Dec 2016

The Role Of Nanofillers In Polymer Nanocomposites, Di Xu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Polymer nanocomposites have been widely used in many fields. By introducing nanoparticles as fillers, researchers are able to get reinforced materials and new materials with novel properties, such as stronger mechanics, enhanced optical properties and improved conductivity. Though experimental techniques have rapidly advanced to enable better control of materials at atomic level, there is still a lack of a fundamental understanding of the dynamics and structure-properties relations in polymer nanocomposites. In this thesis, we use computer simulations to study the molecular structure and connections between microstate to macro properties of a variety of nanocomposites. Our goal is to understand the …

Synchrotron X-Ray Topography Analysis Of Dislocation Line Directions In 4h-Sic Single Crystals, Jianing Yan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis presents a Synchrotron White Beam X-ray Topography study of dislocations in 4H- SiC single crystals. Basic introduction is given including the crystal structure and atomic arrangement, crystal growth techniques, and the dislocation types. The commonly observed dislocations, including Micropipes (MPs), Basal Plane Dislocations (BPDs), Threading Screw Dislocations (TSDs), Threading Edge Dislocations (TEDs), Threading Mixed Dislocations (TMDs), in 4H-SiC single crystals have been reviewed. Since the extensive application of SiC for power devices is limited by the presence of these dislocations, the minimization, and eventually elimination of these dislocations, have been a major impetus in both research and commercial …

Building A Portable Room Temperature Quantum Memory, Ruoxi Wang Dec 2016

Building A Portable Room Temperature Quantum Memory, Ruoxi Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Quantum memory provides a platform for building quantum networks in quantum information processing. Applications of said networks include quantum gates for quantum computing and quantum repeaters for long distance quantum key distribution. An optical quantum memory can be realized by a cold atom system combined with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). However, room temperature quantum memory via vapor cells benefit from its easy operation without the need for laser cooling and trapping, promoting the scalability. In this work, we studied and tested EIT in a Rubidium vapor cell at room temperature, by storing and retrieving a classical light source using probe …

Nanoscale Eengineering Of Infrared Plasmons In Graphene, Haiming Deng Dec 2016

Nanoscale Eengineering Of Infrared Plasmons In Graphene, Haiming Deng

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Surface plasmons are collective oscillations of free charge carriers confined in interface between two dielectrics, where the real part of the dielectric changes sign (e.g a metal-insulator interface such as gold film and air). The study of surface plasmon has been a popular research theme with potential applications utilizing the fact that the wavelength of plasmons can be many order smaller than that of the incident lights. The potential applications include transfer of information in hundreds of terahertz instead of upper limit of gigahertz in traditional wires, photodetectors with frequency range from terahertz to mid-IR, and nano-imaging. In our experiment, …

Searching For Dark Sectors, Yiming Zhong Dec 2016

Searching For Dark Sectors, Yiming Zhong

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The existence of Dark Matter suggests the presence of a dark sector, consisting of particles neutral under all Standard Model forces. Various “portals†can connect the dark sector to the Standard Model sector. Two popular examples are the vector portal, which gives rise to a “dark photon†(A′), and the Higgs portal, which gives rise to a “dark Higgs†. Such dark forces appear in many well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. In some cases, they may resolve discrepancies between experimental data and theoretical predictions, such as the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We show that dark sectors and forces can …

Sphingolipids In Breast Cancer Progression And Inflammatory Responses, Benjamin J Newcomb Dec 2016

Sphingolipids In Breast Cancer Progression And Inflammatory Responses, Benjamin J Newcomb

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Acid Sphingomyelianse (ASM) is a key regulatory enzyme that produces the bioactive lipid ceramide, which is converted into other sphingolipids by enzymes such as Ceramide Kinase (CERK). Previous literature has implicated ASM and CERK in inflammatory signaling, but the specific role of ASM and CERK as mediators of inflammatory signaling in breast cancer has remained elusive. In this work, we delineated the role of ASM in p38 activation and subsequent IL-6 production, as well as the role of CERK as a downstream effector of activated ASM. Since previous literature has shown that TNF-α induced dramatic alterations in the sphingolipid profile …

Transport Studies Of Superconducting Materials, Cheng Zhang Dec 2016

Transport Studies Of Superconducting Materials, Cheng Zhang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Superconducting materials are promising for future applications on energy transport and storage. The key properties for superconductors are critical temperature Tc, critical current density Jc and upper critical field Hc2. In this dissertation, detailed transport studies were performed on two superconducting materials: FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films and the second generation YBa2Cu3O7-δ coated conductors, in order to determine what limits the broad applications of these superconductors. High quality of FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition. Low temperature oxygen annealing and proton irradiation were conducted on the films, as the post-treatment techniques in order to improve the transport performance. Jc …

Enhancing Operating Systems With Network Provenance Based Policies For Systematic Malware Defense, Wai Kit Sze Dec 2016

Enhancing Operating Systems With Network Provenance Based Policies For Systematic Malware Defense, Wai Kit Sze

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Todays OSes adopt users as the basic unit of trust. Every file and process owned by the same user has the same userid as the user. This design stems from the very first multi-user OS created, a time when computers were self-contained, and file contents were under the control of users. Today, users frequently download data and code from the Internet, without fully understanding their content or consequences. However, existing desktop OSes reuse the same old trust model and treat downloaded files as if users are fully responsible for them. This trust is exploited by today’s malware. In this dissertation, …

Innovations In High Dimensional Data Exploration, Representation And Generation, Bing Wang Dec 2016

Innovations In High Dimensional Data Exploration, Representation And Generation, Bing Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Data with many attributes have become commonplace in a wide range of domains. In these data, the most interesting relations are often multivariate and are generally confusing to most people. Efforts have been made to design proper tools to recognize those high dimensional relationships reliably but those tools are often far off from making use of the innate 3D scene understanding capabilities of the human visual system. We present a framework that eases this barrier by design, called the Subspace Voyager. It decomposes a high-dimensional data space into a continuum of generalized 3D subspaces. Analysts can then explore these 3D …

Cumulative Effects Of Ocean Acidification, Eutrophication, And Competition On The Growth Of Two Bloom-Forming, Estuarine Macroalgae, Craig Steven Young Dec 2016

Cumulative Effects Of Ocean Acidification, Eutrophication, And Competition On The Growth Of Two Bloom-Forming, Estuarine Macroalgae, Craig Steven Young

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

While there is a growing interest in understanding how marine life will respond to future ocean acidification, many coastal ecosystems currently experience intense acidification in response to upwelling, riverine discharge, and eutrophication. Such acidification can be inhibitory to calcifying animals, but less is known regarding how non-calcifying macroalgae may respond to elevated CO2. Additionally, while the ability of some marine autotrophs to benefit from elevated CO2 over others may result in shifts in community structure, such shifts can also be affected by competition between primary producers. In order to examine what role ocean acidification, eutrophication, and competition plays in the …

On Mirna-Mrna Network Extraction And Ultra-Fast Nucleotide Barcodes Clustering Algorithm, Lu Zhao Dec 2016

On Mirna-Mrna Network Extraction And Ultra-Fast Nucleotide Barcodes Clustering Algorithm, Lu Zhao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis consists of two topics: (1) discovery of microRNA/mRNA regulatory networks on essential thrombocytosis (ET), and (2) a novel ultrafast clustering algorithm to count nucleotide barcode and amplicon reads with errors. The objective of the first study is to discover miRNA-mRNA regulatory networks related to ET, a chronic myeloproliferative disorder with an unregulated surplus of platelets. Complications of ET include stroke, heart attack, and formation of blood clots. While the genetic basis of ET has been studied to some extent, no direct diagnostic test is available to date. In this study, we aim to identify novel ET-related miRNA-mRNA regulatory …

Examining The Functional Role Of The C-Terminal Domain Of The Insulin Like Growth Factor 1 Receptor Kinase Using Naturally Occurring Mutations Present In Human Cancers, Christa Nicole Pappalardo Dec 2016

Examining The Functional Role Of The C-Terminal Domain Of The Insulin Like Growth Factor 1 Receptor Kinase Using Naturally Occurring Mutations Present In Human Cancers, Christa Nicole Pappalardo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Insulin Like Growth Factor 1 Receptor (IGF1R) is a receptor tyrosine kinase that functions to control cell proliferation and apoptosis. Activation occurs upon the binding of the IGF1 ligand to the extracellular domain facilitating trans-autophosphorylation and thus activation. The receptor activates downstream signaling through both the MAPK and PI3K/Akt pathways that contribute to cellular proliferation and preventing cell death, respectively. IGF1R is overexpressed and hyperactive in many human cancers. We postulated that IGF1R could also be activated by mutation. We further hypothesized that particular C-terminal mutations could affect the ability of this domain to autoregulate the receptor. Mutations were chosen …

Functional Connectivity Of Thalamocortical Networks In Visual Working Memory, Anna Song Huang Dec 2016

Functional Connectivity Of Thalamocortical Networks In Visual Working Memory, Anna Song Huang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Visual working memory refers to the temporary maintenance and manipulation of information to achieve a goal and is thought to involve a network of frontal, parietal and visual regions. Accumulating evidence suggests that the thalamus is also involved in visual attention and working memory. The thalamus shows extensive neuroanatomical connectivity with cortical regions involved in working memory and is hypothesized to play an important role in the synchronization of task dependent activity among cortical networks. However, work on functional connectivity between the thalamus and cortex during visual and visuo-spatial working memory in humans is sparse. The studies reported here applied …

Tissue Engineering Using 3d Template Casting, Travis Kruse Dec 2016

Tissue Engineering Using 3d Template Casting, Travis Kruse

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

One of the major goals of tissue engineering is to develop methods that reliably fabricate tissues and organs ex vivo for use/implantation in vivo. However, the ability to create large-scale 3D tissues at physiological cell densities is hindered by our inability to sustain cells. The main reason for this is that without an incorporated vascular network, the transport of nutrients and wastes are restricted to molecular diffusion, which is limited to approximately 100 µm in biological tissues. Here we have developed a casting based templating technology to create highly ordered microchannels in polymers for MRI phantom and in vitro tissue …

A West Indian Jubilee In America: British Emancipation And The American Abolition Movement, Dexter Joey Gabriel Dec 2016

A West Indian Jubilee In America: British Emancipation And The American Abolition Movement, Dexter Joey Gabriel

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation, “A West Indian Jubilee in America: British Emancipation and the American Abolition Movement,†charts the impact of British Emancipation on American abolitionism and free African-American communities from the 1830s through the 1860s. On August 1,1834 the British Abolition Act freed by proclamation 800,000 slaves in the West Indies. In the coming decades, in print and in public rituals, the success of the former slaves in the British West Indies became a crucial focal point in the debate on American slavery. This debate took place in the flourishing American print culture that emerged in the 1830s: antislavery newspapers, tracts, …

Artifactual Evidence For The Role Of The Warp-Weighted Loom: The Transformation Of Textile Production In The Iron Age Levant, Thaddeus Nelson Nelson Dec 2016

Artifactual Evidence For The Role Of The Warp-Weighted Loom: The Transformation Of Textile Production In The Iron Age Levant, Thaddeus Nelson Nelson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis presents a comparative study of textile tools and textile remains from the Iron Age II (c. 1000 – 500 BCE) Levant as a means to investigate textile production and procurement in international economies. Earlier studies interpret the increase in loom weights (components of warp-weighted looms) during the Iron Age II as evidence that weavers working with these looms were the predominant source of textiles in the Levant. Yet there is no consensus on the nature of the textiles woven on warp-weighted looms, which authors independently describe as fine trade commodities, tapestries for tribute payments, and coarse fabrics for …

Constrained Functional Linear Model For Multi-Loci Genetic Mapping, Jiayu Huang Dec 2016

Constrained Functional Linear Model For Multi-Loci Genetic Mapping, Jiayu Huang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In genome-wide association studies (GWAS), the efficient incorporation of linkage disequilibria (LD) among dense-typed linked genetic variants into analysis to improve the association power is critical yet challenging problem. Functional linear models (FLM), which impose a smoothing structure on the coefficients of correlated covariates, are advantageous in genetic mapping of multiple variants with high LD. Here we propose a novel constrained FLM (cFLM) framework to perform simultaneous association tests on a block of linked SNPs with various traits, including continuous, binary and zero-inflated count phenotypes. The new cFLM applies a set of inequality constraints on the FLM to ensure model …

The Graphic Memoir And The Cartoonist's Memory, Alice Claire Burrows Dec 2016

The Graphic Memoir And The Cartoonist's Memory, Alice Claire Burrows

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Graphic memoirs embrace the vibrancy and rich social and artistic history of comics, and the intimacy and imagination of autobiographies. Spanning from Justin Green’s 1972 Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary to Riad Sattouf’s 2014 The Arab of the Future, autobiographical comics capture the fragmented, subjective, and visual nature of memory. Reacting against the Comics Code, underground comics introduced the concept of portraying oneself in comics, a practice that achieved mainstream validation in 1992 when Art Spiegelman won the Pulitzer Prize for Maus. Drawing from classic comic strips like Richard Outcault’s The Yellow Kid and comic books like the …

Defusing Transcendental Empiricism: Deleuze, Hume, And Empiricism, Scott Leigh Kravet Dec 2016

Defusing Transcendental Empiricism: Deleuze, Hume, And Empiricism, Scott Leigh Kravet

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation addresses the problem of conflating the conditions of experience with the given of experience. The conditions of experience are by definition not contents of experience. There are ideal conditions and material conditions, which we find studied respectively in transcendental idealism and the neurosciences. The given of experience is a search towards originary experiences. This conflation between condition and given also confuses the distinction between the ground of experience, which is transcendental, and the foundation of experience, which is immanent. This confusion rises to the forefront of philosophical discourse when Deleuze calls his position ‘transcendental empiricism.’ I ask the …

Weighted-Least-Squares Based Essentially Non-Oscillatory Schemes On Unstructured Meshes, Hongxu Liu Dec 2016

Weighted-Least-Squares Based Essentially Non-Oscillatory Schemes On Unstructured Meshes, Hongxu Liu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Essentially non-oscillatory schemes and their variants, such as ENO and WENO, are widely used high-order schemes for solving partial differential equations (PDEs), especially hyperbolic conservation laws with piecewise smooth solutions. For structured meshes, these techniques can achieve high order accuracy for smooth functions while being non-oscillatory near discontinuities. For unstructured meshes, which are needed for complex geometries, similar schemes are required but they are much more challenging to design, especially for finite different schemes. We propose a new family of non-oscillatory schemes, called WLS-ENO, in the context of solving hyperbolic conservation laws using both finite volume and finite difference methods …

Bundle-Forming Α-Helical Peptide-Dendron Hybrids | Bundle-Forming α-Helical Peptide-Dendron Hybrids, Jeannette Elizabeth Marine Dec 2016

Bundle-Forming Α-Helical Peptide-Dendron Hybrids | Bundle-Forming α-Helical Peptide-Dendron Hybrids, Jeannette Elizabeth Marine

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Accurate control over the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in synthetic materials remains a challenge for polymer and supramolecular chemistry. A defined sequence of monomers programs the folding and self-assembly of peptides and proteins, which makes them excellent candidates for materials in which the precise arrangement of atoms is known. The inherent sensitivity of peptides to external stimuli hampers their practical application. Conjugating peptides with synthetic polymers creates biohybrid materials with increased stability and processability. Hybrid biomaterials can retain the folding and self-assembly properties of peptides. Our approach to hybrid biomaterials is to combine helix bundle-forming peptides with a class of …

Abstract of the Thesis Quando la letteratura si incrocia con l’architettura by Violanda Franzese Master of Arts in Italian Stony Brook University 2016 Premessa Con questa tesi cercherò di spiegare la relazione tra letteratura e architettura e il ruolo dell’architettura nella letteratura.

Patterns And Predictors Of Untargeted Health Behavior Change In The First Year Of The Women’S Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial | Patterns And Predictors Of Untargeted Health Behavior Change In The First Year Of The Women’S Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial, Elizabeth Anne Sarma Dec 2016

Patterns And Predictors Of Untargeted Health Behavior Change In The First Year Of The Women’S Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial | Patterns And Predictors Of Untargeted Health Behavior Change In The First Year Of The Women’S Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial, Elizabeth Anne Sarma

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The gateway behavior hypothesis posits that changes in a health behavior that is targeted for change may promote positive changes in other untargeted health behaviors; however, previous gateway behavior studies have shown inconsistent results. The purpose of the current study was to examine the patterns and predictors of change in untargeted health behaviors in the first year of a diet modification trial. Specifically, the study explored change in untargeted physical activity, alcohol consumption, and smoking behavior in the first year of the Women’s Health Initiative dietary modification trial, in which postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to either control (n = …

Organizational Structure And Class: Examining Resilience In The Maoist Movement In India, Juhi Tyagi Dec 2016

Organizational Structure And Class: Examining Resilience In The Maoist Movement In India, Juhi Tyagi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

What causes armed movements to last? I address this question by taking up the case of the Maoist movement in India. Through an ethnographic analysis and interviews of 127 current cadre, surrendered militants and non-movement village members in 77 villages, over a period of twelve months in 2013-2014 in three districts in Telangana, India, as well creating and analyzing a database on Maoist incidents (2000-2012), I find that non-violent armed group organizing best predicted movement resilience. Although state and political economy variables formed a base for armed rebellion, organizational structures in the villages determined the presence and sustenance of armed …

At The Juncture Of Homonationalism And Homophobic Nationalism: Sexual Justice Organizing In Uganda And The Paradox Of Transnational Advocacy, Sasha Maria Rodriguez Dec 2016

At The Juncture Of Homonationalism And Homophobic Nationalism: Sexual Justice Organizing In Uganda And The Paradox Of Transnational Advocacy, Sasha Maria Rodriguez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009 propelled Uganda to the forefront of global media. In its initial manifestation, the Bill threatened to penalize “aggravated homosexuality†with the death penalty. The media attention earned by the proposed legislation opened avenues for transnational cooperation and communication between US-based Human and LGBTI Rights organizations and Ugandan kuchus – a Ugandan identity that encapsulates various identities of same gender loving or gender nonconforming peoples. This project focuses on this transnational relationship as it interacts with the dynamic of organizing in the midst of a national project of sexual repression. This dissertation asks how kuchu organizing …

A Comparison Of Two Theoretical Approaches To Addressing Ageism: Education And Extended Contact, Ashley Elizabeth Lytle Dec 2016

A Comparison Of Two Theoretical Approaches To Addressing Ageism: Education And Extended Contact, Ashley Elizabeth Lytle

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Ageism continues to be a widespread problem and is of increasing concern given the growing older population worldwide and youth-centered focus of many societies. Despite the need for a better understanding of attitudes towards older adults, ageism is a relatively understudied area of social psychology. This dissertation sought, for the first time, to compare two theoretical approaches to addressing ageism: education about aging (providing accurate information about aging) and extended contact (knowledge of positive intergenerational contact) as well as their potential combined impact (education plus extended contact). Across two studies, participants were randomly assigned to one of the four conditions: …

Partisanship, Political Information, And Money, Jeeyoung Park Dec 2016

Partisanship, Political Information, And Money, Jeeyoung Park

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation contains three parts - three papers. My dissertation tries to bridge the gap between two perspectives: the socio-psychological model and the rational choice model in voting behavior. The first part investigates how partisans behave in the prediction market. Using an agent-based model, my simulation results show that participants’ initial beliefs about a candidate’s winning probability, confirmation biases in accepting information, and monetary incentives strongly increase changes in participants’ beliefs about the electoral outcome captured by price volatility in the prediction market. The second part explores the microfoundation about individuals’ behavioral motivations in evaluating political candidates. My experimental results …

Natural Protective Features Along New York's Ocean Shoreline And Their Response To Extreme Events, Hanlu Huang Dec 2016

Natural Protective Features Along New York's Ocean Shoreline And Their Response To Extreme Events, Hanlu Huang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Features providing natural protection against erosion and flooding are defined in the laws of New York State to include dunes, bluffs, and beaches. In addition, structural hazard areas are defined to be stretches of the coast where the long-term recession rate is greater than one foot per year. LiDAR data was used to identify NPFs and examine shoreline recession rates at 750 transects along the south shore of eastern Long Island. Meaningful combinations of NPFs included dunes in front of bluffs, dunes formed on top of bluffs and multiple dunes. Single dunes were the NPFs along 27.1% of the shoreline; …

The Interactive Effects Of Acidification, Temperature Stress, And Food Supply On The Growth And Survival Of The Forage Fish, Menidia Beryllina And Cyprinodon Variegatus, Lucas R. Merlo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The combustion of fossil fuels is increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations and, in turn, acidifying and warming world oceans. A further consequence of warming oceans may be declines in the abundance of plankton. Some of these changes can already be observed in coastal oceans and may affect marine biota including forage fish which play a key role in marine food webs as key consumers of primary production and prey of fishery species. While these climate change stressors have previously been shown to negatively affect the performance of larval fish, the interactive effects of these multiple stressors on fish have yet to …

Dynamics Of Alcohol And Ketone Photooxidation Reactions On Tio2(110), Matthew David Kershis Dec 2016

Dynamics Of Alcohol And Ketone Photooxidation Reactions On Tio2(110), Matthew David Kershis

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) has attracted significant interest over the years as a photocatalyst for the photooxidation of organic compounds. This type of chemistry finds numerous practical applications in areas such as environmental remediation and self-cleaning coatings. The work described herein employs pump-probe laser techniques to study the photooxidation dynamics of acetone, butanone, ethanol and 2-propanol over a model TiO$_2$(110) photocatalyst. Studies of model catalysts under ideal, ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions allow for detailed, mechanistic information to be obtained. A common characteristic of all these photooxidation reactions is that they proceed by ejection of methyl or ethyl (in the case of …
