Stroke As A First Presentation Of Malignancy, Farheen Niazi, Puneet Kakar, Ratneshwari Jha, Reena Dhami, Farook Edoo

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Stroke is a frequent complication in patients with cancer occurring in nearly 15% of the cases. However cerebrovascular disease as the first presentation of malignancy has rarely been reported. We report two such cases who were admitted with acute stroke but were later on found to be having malignancy. Routine workup was unrewarding in both patients. Both patients developed pulmonary embolism as well during hospital stay suggesting hypercoagulable state as likely etiology. Reaching to the final diagnosis was an arduous journey but can help guide other clinicians facing similar cases. Non Hodgkins B cell lymphoma and Carcinoma Gall bladder were …

Rapamycin Increases Length And Mechanosensory Function Of Primary Cilia In Renal Eptihelial And Vascular Endothelial Cells, Rinzhin T. Sherpa, Kimberly F. Atkinson, Viviana P. Ferreira, Surya M. Nauli Dec 2016

Rapamycin Increases Length And Mechanosensory Function Of Primary Cilia In Renal Eptihelial And Vascular Endothelial Cells, Rinzhin T. Sherpa, Kimberly F. Atkinson, Viviana P. Ferreira, Surya M. Nauli

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Primary cilia arebiophysically-sensitive organelles responsible for sensing fluid-flow and transducing this stimulus into intracellular responses. Previous studies have shown that the primary cilia mediate flow-induced calcium influx, and sensitivity of cilia function to flow is correlated to cilia length. Cells with abnormal cilia length or function can lead to a host of diseases that are collectively termed as ciliopathies. Rapamycin, a potent inhibitor of mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin), has been demonstrated to be a potential pharmacological agent against the aberrant mTOR signaling seen in ciliopathies such as polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Here we look …

Integrating Nature Into The Helping Professions, Jacob Radtke Dec 2016

Integrating Nature Into The Helping Professions, Jacob Radtke

Counselor Education Capstones

A growing body of research is being developed which indicates that individuals and communities interacting with nature are experiencing benefits to both their mental and physical health. Yet how nature produces these benefits differs among researchers and though consensus can be found regarding human interaction with nature a definitive solitary answer does not currently exist. Despite differences amongst researchers on how nature impacts the human body a growing number of helping professions are integrating use of nature within their scope of practice. Cities and towns are also increasing the use of nature within infrastructure and planning as the positive effects …

Effects Of Poverty On Adolescent Mental Health, Morgan Dannecker Dec 2016

Effects Of Poverty On Adolescent Mental Health, Morgan Dannecker

Counselor Education Capstones

Living in poverty puts adolescents at risk for developing mental health symptoms. When living in poverty, adolescents are more vulnerable to experiencing or witnessing violence, which negatively impacts their mental health. Low socioeconomic neighborhoods and poor parent education negatively impact adolescent mental health. While living in poverty can negatively affect adolescent mental health, some protective factors on the individual, familial and community level can help decrease these negative effects. Confidence, parental support and involvement, and religion can help protect adolescents from the negative effects of living in poverty. Along with protective factors, interventions that have been established to help negate …

Behavioral Activation Therapy In Treating Depression, Brian Strauss

Counselor Education Capstones

Depression is a prevalent psychological disorder worldwide, and a search for effective treatments—particularly for clients with minimal accessibility to therapy—has been popularized in the mental health community in the last half-century. Behavioral therapy has become very popular for treating depression, most notably by changing maladaptive behaviors and habits into effective behaviors (Gelder, Marks, & Wolff, 1967). Activation Therapy has come to the forefront of behavioral therapy, making use of activity scheduling, problem solving, selfmonitoring, goal setting, and empowering clients to take charge of their treatment. Through restructuring behaviors, habits, reducing brain activity needed for productive thoughts, and alleviating rumination, Activation …

No One Statute Should Have Too Much Power: How Electing Not To Amend 42 U.S.C § 1320(A)–7(B) May Frustrate The Purpose Of The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act, Amber C. Dawson Dec 2016

No One Statute Should Have Too Much Power: How Electing Not To Amend 42 U.S.C § 1320(A)–7(B) May Frustrate The Purpose Of The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act, Amber C. Dawson

University of Miami Business Law Review

The over breadth of the Federal Anti-Kickback statute as amended by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) holds dangerous implications for the future of the health care marketplace. When a statute permits criminal, civil and administrative punishment for an overbroad category of innocuous actions, such a statute must also take into account the specific, rather than general, intent of the actor, or the ensnaring of innocents is ultimately likely to result. Historically, the statute required a finding of specific intent to be found to uphold a violation of the statute. With the passing of Greber v. US and …

The U.S. Law Regime Of Sovereign Immunity And The Sovereign Wealth Funds, Victorino J. Tejera

University of Miami Business Law Review

This article is concerned with the applicability of sovereign immunity to the so-called sovereign wealth funds (“SWFs”) within the U.S. legal system. While sovereign immunity has existed for at least two centuries, SWFs and the types of investment activities they conduct on behalf of their parent foreign states are a rather recent phenomenon. As a result, the issue of the applicability of the rules on sovereign immunity to the SWFs poses novel legal challenges and difficulties. In a nutshell, this article is intended to answer the following questions: Are SWFs entitled to invoke sovereign immunity before U.S. courts? If so, …

International Reciprocity: If A Drug Is Good Enough For Great Britain, It Should Be Good Enough For The United States, Nicole C. Perez

University of Miami Business Law Review

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the largest, and most lucrative, industries in the world, worth about one trillion U.S. dollars. Specifically, the United States accounts for more than one-third of the global pharmaceutical market with about 340 million dollars in sales. Not only is the pharmaceutical industry one of the biggest industries profit-wise, but it is also an industry that affects almost every single person in the world. In a nation where healthcare issues are always on the rise, ensuring that American citizens benefit from pharmacology is essential to improving the nation’s healthcare system. The Food and Drug Administration …

Noise: Its Impact In The Operating Room, Brennon Wesley Sloan Dec 2016

Noise: Its Impact In The Operating Room, Brennon Wesley Sloan

Doctoral Projects

Orthopedic and neurologic cases routinely reach noise levels exceeding 120 decibels (Katz, 2014). Modern equipment and monitors used by anesthesia personnel only reach 85 decibels (Katz, 2014). These monitors can go undetected during peak noise levels creating a serious safety concern for patients that could lead to patient injury or death (Gawande, Zinner, Studdert, & Brennan, 2003). A clinical question was developed to determine if the education of noise levels in the operating room affects change in practice. For operating room managers and staff, does education of noise levels in the operating room compared to no education initiate a change …

Reducing Hypotension In Elective Cesarean Section Patients With Administration Of Ondansetron Prior To Spinal Anesthesia: A Retrospective Chart Analysis, Linsey Erin Phipps Dec 2016

Reducing Hypotension In Elective Cesarean Section Patients With Administration Of Ondansetron Prior To Spinal Anesthesia: A Retrospective Chart Analysis, Linsey Erin Phipps

Doctoral Projects

The birth of a child is one of the most memorable moments in a woman’s life, and many women undergo an elective cesarean section, requiring spinal anesthesia. At this time, the patient and the unborn child’s well-being become the anesthetist’s main focus. The ultimate goal of anesthesia providers is to provide the safest care to the patient. Spinal anesthesia has many benefits, but has a common side effect of hypotension, which can also result in nausea. Hypotension, dangerous to mother and child, is often treated with vasopressors, but can also cause nausea, which is treated by the administration of ondansetron. …

Oral Carbohydrate Administration Prior To Colorectal Surgery: Practice Change Outcomes And Economic Analysis, Joshua Kendrick Ezelle Dec 2016

Oral Carbohydrate Administration Prior To Colorectal Surgery: Practice Change Outcomes And Economic Analysis, Joshua Kendrick Ezelle

Doctoral Projects

Difference in recovery times has been an interest of mine for many years. I observed that an open heart surgery routinely recovered and discharged on the third post-op day, while a colorectal patient often required a hospital stay of five to ten days. I began researching recovery methods of colorectal patients. I found enhanced recovery techniques like decreased narcotic, use of NSAID’s, early ambulation, and the use of medications that assist with bowel peristalsis are being employed nationally. Other techniques are now starting to be used with positive results. One of these is Carb-loading. Carb-loading is the oral intake of …

The Class Action As Trust, Sergio J. Campos Dec 2016

The Class Action As Trust, Sergio J. Campos

Washington Law Review

The class action is controversial because the class attorney can litigate or settle the claims of the class members without their consent. Many scholars have turned to corporate law to address the potentially disloyal behavior of the class attorney. These scholars have used analogies to corporate law to support (1) the use of opt-out rights and (2) restrictions on class conflicts to constrain class attorneys, and the law has generally mirrored both requirements. In practice, however, both of these requirements have undermined the efficacy of the class action and prevented the class action from being used in many appropriate settings. …

The Dormant Commerce Clause "Effect": How The Difficulty In Reconciling Exxon And Hunt Has Led To A Circuit Split For Challenges To Laws Affecting National Chains, Valerie Walker Dec 2016

The Dormant Commerce Clause "Effect": How The Difficulty In Reconciling Exxon And Hunt Has Led To A Circuit Split For Challenges To Laws Affecting National Chains, Valerie Walker

Washington Law Review

The onslaught of chains such as Wal-Mart and Starbucks has driven some state and local lawmakers to craft regulations prohibiting these types of national chains. In response, several national chains have challenged the constitutionality of such regulations, claiming that they amount to economic protectionism. The dormant Commerce Clause (DCC) doctrine prohibits states from engaging in protectionism directed at commerce from other states. Courts use a two-tiered analysis when considering these types of challenges. The tier-level analysis is important because regulations rarely survive the first tier’s elevated scrutiny. The first tier applies when a state law directly discriminates against interstate commerce, …

Put Privity In The Past: A Modern Approach To Determining When Washington Attorneys Are Liable To Nonclients For Estate Planning Malpractice, Kaitlyn C. Kelly Dec 2016

Put Privity In The Past: A Modern Approach To Determining When Washington Attorneys Are Liable To Nonclients For Estate Planning Malpractice, Kaitlyn C. Kelly

Washington Law Review

Even in the best of circumstances, an estate plan may leave intended beneficiaries frustrated. Occasionally, an attorney’s alleged mistake in the execution of a will or administration of a trust sparks the beneficiaries’ anger. Under Washington law, it is unclear whether intended beneficiaries may sue an estate planning attorney for malpractice. Generally, an estate planning attorney’s client is a testator, not a testator’s intended beneficiaries; thus, the intended beneficiaries are not in privity of contract with the attorney. Rather, the only individual in privity with the accused attorney is usually deceased at the time of a malpractice lawsuit. If a …
