The Onomatopoeic Ideophone-Gesture Relationship In Pastaza Quichua, Sarah Ann Hatton Dec 2016

The Onomatopoeic Ideophone-Gesture Relationship In Pastaza Quichua, Sarah Ann Hatton

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between ideophones and gestures has only recently been studied and is not yet completely understood. The topic has been specifically addressed by Kita (1993), Klassen (1998), Dingemanse (2013), Mihas (2013), and Reiter (2013). Yet there has been little focus on onomatopoeic ideophones. Onomatopoeic ideophones have been set aside as different by many previous researchers (Klassen, 1998, pp. 28-31; Kilian-Hatz, 2001, pp. 161-163; Dingemanse, 2011, pp. 131, 165-167; Mihas, 2012, pp. 327-329; Reiter, 2013, pp. 9-10, 308). Being stigmatized as simple, they have been labeled as "sound mimicking words" (McGregor, 2002, p. 341), "non-linguistic sounds" (Güldemann, 2008, p. 283), …

Extending The Reach Of Directional Dark Matter Experiments Through Novel Detector Technologies, Nguyen S. Phan Dec 2016

Extending The Reach Of Directional Dark Matter Experiments Through Novel Detector Technologies, Nguyen S. Phan

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Dark matter is believed to comprise over 80% of the matter in the Universe. Its composition could be in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which are predicted by extensions of the Standard Model, namely supersymmetric theories. Even though hints of its existence were detected in astronomical observations over eighty years ago, its detection through means other than the gravitational influence on observable luminous matter still eludes us.

Currently, there are many ongoing direct detection experiments, that aim to measure the signals left by the elastic scattering of WIMPs with nuclei in the detector target material. The detection …

Discovery Of A Novel Nitric Oxide Sensing Protein, Nosp, Sajjad Hossain Dec 2016

Discovery Of A Novel Nitric Oxide Sensing Protein, Nosp, Sajjad Hossain

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In nature, most bacteria live in surface attached communities called bacterial biofilms. Community living is beneficial to the bacteria, as it offers heightened resistance to environmental stresses due to the production of a protective exopolymeric matrix. When the growth of a bacterial community reaches a certain threshold, some bacteria disperse to find new frontiers to occupy and repopulate. Bacterial biofilms can be beneficial as is the case with those found in our gastrointestinal tracks that help us digest food particles. However, biofilms can pose a major threat to human health when they are composed of pathogenic bacteria that cause chronic …

Mechanistic Evaluation Of Nsd3 In The Pathogenesis Of Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Chen Shen Dec 2016

Mechanistic Evaluation Of Nsd3 In The Pathogenesis Of Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Chen Shen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The bromodomain and extra-terminal (BET) protein BRD4 is a validated drug target in hematological malignancies, owing to its essential role in sustaining oncogenic transcriptional programs. To gain insight into the cancer-relevant mechanistic function of BRD4, I have investigated its mechanism of transcriptional activation in the MLL-fusion subtype of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with experimental approaches including small hairpin RNA (shRNA) knockdown, clustered regularly-interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-Cas9 knockout, biochemistry, RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-Seq). In this study, I demonstrate that the AML maintenance function of BRD4 requires its interaction with NSD3, which belongs to a subfamily of …

Efficient Skimming Of Text, Aaswad Anil Satpute Dec 2016

Efficient Skimming Of Text, Aaswad Anil Satpute

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This paper is an attempt at describing the priority of skimming in enhancing the lives of the visually impaired and dyslexic. The paper distinguishes summarization from skimming. It speaks of skimming a given blob of text. And with it, arises some unique challenges. So, the paper tries to tackle these challenges by enhancing and speeding up the algorithm. The algorithm breaks down the input into smaller and compact skimmed results, which when used as the input to the algorithm completely fastens the algorithm with a tremendous decrease in run time. The ways of creating the compact skimmed version of the …

Integrating Mobile Agents And Distributed Sensors In Wireless Sensor Networks, Jiemin Zeng Dec 2016

Integrating Mobile Agents And Distributed Sensors In Wireless Sensor Networks, Jiemin Zeng

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

As computers become more ubiquitous in the prominent phenomenon of the Internet of Things, we encounter many unique challenges in the field of wireless sensor networks. A wireless sensor network is a group of small, low powered sensors with wireless capability to communicate with each other. The goal of these sensors, also called nodes, generally is to collect some information about their environment and report it back to a base station. Depending on the nature of the nodes or the environment, they may be placed in a deterministic pattern, deployed randomly, or mobile (i.e. cars on a highway). Due to …

Computational Models Of Visual Features: From Proto-Objects To Object Categories, Chen-Ping Yu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The human visual perception is a complex system that excels in tasks such as object recognition and localization, face detection, object segmentation, action classification, and more. While we perform these everyday tasks with ease, little is known about the underlying process of the human visual system. In contrast, computer vision is a field of research that strives for better performance in the aforementioned tasks, which rely on carefully designed statistical machine learning based theories. As the field of computer vision and machine learning has matured over the past decade, there is an abundance of methods and theories that can be …

Using Importance-Performance Analysis To Guide Instructional Design Of Experiential Learning Activities, Sheri Anderson, Yu-Chang Hsu, Judy Kinney

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Designing experiential learning activities requires an instructor to think about what they want the students to learn. Using importance-performance analysis can assist with the instructional design of the activities. This exploratory study used importance-performance analysis in an online introduction to criminology course. There is limited research on experiential learning in online courses as well as empirical data to assist with the instructional design of the experiential learning activities. The primary goal of this article is to demonstrate the use of importance- performance analysis to guide the instructional design of experiential learning activities.

Impact Of Spatial Averaging On Radar Reflectivity At Internal Snowpack Layer Boundaries, N. Rutter, H.P. Marshall, K. Tape, R. Essery, J. King Dec 2016

Impact Of Spatial Averaging On Radar Reflectivity At Internal Snowpack Layer Boundaries, N. Rutter, H.P. Marshall, K. Tape, R. Essery, J. King

CGISS Publications and Presentations

Microwave radar amplitude within a snowpack can be strongly influenced by spatial variability of internal layer boundaries. We quantify the impact of spatial averaging of snow stratigraphy and physical snowpack properties on surface scattering from near-nadir frequency-modulated continuous- wave radar at 12–18 GHz. Relative permittivity, density, grain size and stratigraphic boundaries were measured in-situ at high resolution along the length of a 9 m snow trench. An optimal range of horizontal averaging (4–6 m) was identified to attribute variations in surface scattering at layer boundaries to dielectric contrasts estimated from centimetre-scale measurements of snowpack stratigraphy and bulk layer properties. Single …

Transaction Complexity And The Movement To Fair Value Accounting, Pinky Rusli, Xinlei Zhao, David A. Ziebart Dec 2016

Transaction Complexity And The Movement To Fair Value Accounting, Pinky Rusli, Xinlei Zhao, David A. Ziebart

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers

Our global economy has pushed the complexity of business transactions to a new level, as companies now employ sophisticated contracts and financial instruments. However, it is unclear whether accounting standards are able to effectively capture transaction complexity, which has been growing at a rapid pace. In this study, we examine three questions related to transaction complexity: (1) Do accounting standards reflect differences in the complexity of the transactions being recorded? (2) Does the use of mark-to-market (i.e., fair value) accounting reduce the complexity of standards by relying on market valuations to capture transaction complexity? (3) Does the reliance on fair …

Improved Sprint Results With Offshore Indian Teams, Fnu Abdul Hasheem Dec 2016

Improved Sprint Results With Offshore Indian Teams, Fnu Abdul Hasheem

Dissertations and Theses

Due to the cultural and linguistic differences, different time zones, and complexities of knowledge transfer involved in IT offshoring, offshore-outsourced projects are more prone to failure than in-house and domestically outsourced projects. These inherent risks exacerbate the communication, coordination and collaboration between vendors and clients and thus affect various stages of the offshore outsourced software development (OSD).

Communication is a major factor of success or failure for any software project. In offshore software development OSD, communication is more critical than collocated software development. Frequent communication is not always possible due to challenges like time zone differences, holiday customs etc. where …

Challenges When Using Scrum In Globally Distributed Teams, Sweta Shah

Dissertations and Theses

The interest of companies towards using agile approaches in GSD projects is growing at a rapid pace. On that note, it is extremely vital to consider the challenging factors involved in agile practices such as scrum in GSD projects. However, the remarkable and effective attempts towards precisely identify, synthesize and report the literature on agile practices for GSD projects have always been inadequate (Hossain, AliBabar & Young Paik, 2009).

With the purpose of encouraging research committee to explore and analyze the projects that implements scrum process in globally distributed environment, the thesis paper places great emphasis on challenges involved with …

Blocked By Diplomatic Barriers: Syrian Refugees And The Eu-Turkey Migration Cooperation, Bassant Hassib, Doaa Nounou

Political Science

The recent EU-Turkey deal on irregular migration and refugees raised voices of humanitarian concerns with regards to the protection of the rights of Syrian refugees. Despite the positive efforts of Turkey to accommodate Syrian refugees, it still lacks a proper asylum system and measures that can guarantee their socio-economic integration and protect their rights. So instead of having a proper EU refugee resettlement system, they just offer money and mobility incentives to Turkey to keep the Syrian refugees on its land, while sidelining the deteriorating status of those refugees in Turkey. This paper argues that EU-Turkey cooperation on migration is …

Optical Sub-Diffraction Limited Focusing For Confined Heating And Lithography, Luis M. Traverso Dec 2016

Optical Sub-Diffraction Limited Focusing For Confined Heating And Lithography, Luis M. Traverso

Open Access Dissertations

Electronics and nanotechnology is constantly demanding a decrease in size of fabricated nanoscale features. This decrease in size has become much more difficult recently due to the limited resolution of optical systems that are fundamental to many nanofabrication methods. A lot of effort has been made to fabricate devices smaller than the diffraction limit of light. Creating devices that are capable of confining fields by means of interference patterns of propagating wave modes and surface plasmon, has proven successful to confine light into smaller spot sizes.

Zone plate diffraction lenses generate spots with dimensions very close to the diffraction limit. …

In-Column Polymer Modifications: Advancing Polymer Bonded Phases, Alexis G. Huckabee

Open Access Dissertations

Glycosylation is the most common post-translational modification affecting protein activities, including delivery to cell surface, binding affinity, and mediating different physiological effects. Separations of glycoproteins and their glycoforms are essential for drug discovery and development, identification of potential disease biomarkers and quality control. The efficiency of glycoprotein separations is limited by the bonded phases, requiring advances in chromatographic materials. Such advances would improve resolution, allowing for more species to be isolated from a mixture and studied.

Our group found that submicrometer nonporous silica stationary phases with tethered polymer chains (acrylamide) give excellent hydrophilic liquid chromatography (HILIC), a common method used …

Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) is a crucial step in the life cycle of data analysis. Exploring data with effective methods would reveal main characteristics of data and provides guidance for model building. The goal of this thesis is to develop effective and efficient methods for data exploration in the regression setting.

First, we propose to use optimal group transformations as a general approach for exploring the relationship between predictor variables X and the response Y. This approach can be considered an automatic procedure to identify the best characteristic of P( Y|X) under which the relationship …

Music And Words: Connecting The Love Of Music With Language, Eileen P. Kennedy, Raymond Torres- Santos Dec 2016

Music And Words: Connecting The Love Of Music With Language, Eileen P. Kennedy, Raymond Torres- Santos

Publications and Research

Children from different cultures have a natural affinity for rhymes, rhythm and music. Imagine if students were able, from the beginning of their education and experiences with academic writing and literacy, to access their unconscious and original selves from which to create their writing. The study of music can help to access this aware, inventive side that can enhance anyone’s writing. As an early childhood writing teacher and a composition teacher, we draw on our experiences with young children with words and music. We examine the relationship between music and words in an effort to bring the primitive drive of …
