The present paper is dedicated to the most subjective of autobiographical genres, to the genre of diary. The author deals with the definition of the term ‘diary’ and also with the main types within the genre in the literary-theoretical tradition of Slavonic and non-Slavonic countries. Among the types of diary, the author focuses on a special subgenre, the so-called writer’s diary, and defines its dominant and variable features. The writer’s diary is analyzed from different points of view (e.g. orientation, intended publication, topics), which leads to distinguishing its varieties (e.g. journalistic, business, poetic, journey diary). ‘Encounters’ With Leo Tolstoy In Ivan Bunin’S Dark Alleys, Татьяна Прохорова

The article identifies various forms of dialogical relations with L. N. Tolstoy in Bunin’s cycle Dark Alleys. The analysis is based on the stories: “Clean Monday”, “Nathalie”, “Ballad” and “The Raven”, which contain biographical allusions as well as display intertextual connections with Tolstoy’s prose writings. The author of the article explores the functioning of Tolstoy’s characteristic motifs, reveals reminiscences, various types of quotes and “dialogic situations” which refer to the epic novel “War and Peace” and Tolstoy’s later works. It is established that Tolstoy’s text performs in Bunin’s short stories plot-forming functions and serves clarifying the author’s ideas.

The Double Of Fyodor Dostoyevsky And The Double Of Nikolai Akhsharumov: The Problem Of Literary Connections, Наталья Володина

The article is devoted to the historical, literary and intertextual connections between Dostoyevsky’s novella The Double and Nikolai Akhsharumov’s novella of the same title. The research indicates that the two writers’ texts are linked by the dominant of psychological analysis, the theme of duality and the topos of St. Petersburg. However, the protagonists themselves, their doubles and the relationships between them are diametrically opposite in the works of Dostoevsky and Akhsharumov. This demonstrates the complex laws of literary evolution, which encompass not only the influence of a predecessor, but also taking issue with him.

The article surveys how Ivan Turgenev’s love myth is deconstructed in Anton Chekhov’s prose works. The latter writer presents the myth more often than not in an ironic mode of narration. While Turgenev’s axiology is literary-centric, Chekhov confronts it with his knowledge of gender psychology and “the understanding of what you write about”.

The mythologem ‘white stone’ seems to be one of the most significant motifs in Innokenty Annensky’s poetics. In the article an attempt has been made to demonstrate a close connection between Annensky’s ‘white stone’ and the island of Leucas (Lefkada), – a famous mythological topos of Greek culture. The author proceeds from the ‘artistic semantics’ of this island (the cult od Apollo, Sapho’s legend) on the one hand, and from the concept of oblivion, strongly associated with this place (Homer, Odyssey, 24, 11), on the other.

The aim of this article is to analyze the narrative poem Don Juan by Nikolai Otsup – a poet of the first wave of Russian emigration. Otsup’s work is being compared with the poem The Commander’s Footsteps by Aleksandr Blok and the narrative poem Komandorov’s Footsteps by David Samoilov. The author pays attention to the similarities in poetic images, sound and colouristic symbols. The paper is devoted to a phenomenon rare for the modern Russian-language drama: playsparables by the Ukrainian playwright Aleksandr Chirkov. They represent the author’s reflection on the reasons of the contemporary tragedy of existence, and a study of the connections between those who govern historical events for their own benefit and those who follow the will of others without thinking of consequences. Artistic generalization is revealed, which allows one to see in them the author’s models of conventional–metaphoric type of epic drama.

The article discusses the creative dialogue into which the newest Russian drama and theatre works enter with Anton Chekhov’s dramaturgy and his personality. Yelena Gremina and Vadim Levanov move along different trajectories to interpret the writer and his characters. Still, those various methods of creative reception help both playwrights to understand Chekhov’s philosophy and rethink it in the context of contemporary life and contemporary art.

The article is devoted to an important aspect of modern aesthetics – intertextuality, which is discussed on the example of film adaptations of Russian classics. Adaptation is considered in the framework of literary-scientific reflection on “translating” verbal text for the audiovisual channel. Procedures connected with intertextuality and game-based technologies are subjected to interpretation in the context of contemporary cinema’s avant-garde artistic searches.

The essay addresses the history of staging Hamlet in the Soviet and post-Soviet Russia. It is based both on the reviews by influential critics of the past and on the personal impressions of the author herself at the turn of the 21st century. The analysis of the dynamics of staging Hamlet in Russia leads to the conclusion that Shakespeare’s tragedy has always functioned like a seismograph, registering every little change in the society and reflecting the general intellectual ambience and attitudes of the Russian intelligentsia.

The paper discusses a peculiar way of dialoguing with tradition, namely by way of intertitles, as is the case in Boris Akunin’s novel Vneklassnoye chtenie (Extracurricular Reading). The effectiveness of the dialogue is also measured in intercultural perspective, based on the Polish translation by Ewa Rojewska-Olejarczuk.

The aim of the paper is to describe two key terms of metarealism (a literary movement in the Russian poetry of the 1980s), namely ‘metabole’ and ‘metametaphor’. These concepts reevaluate the concept of metaphor and at the same time become the essential poetic-artistic idea of metarealism. The paper outlines their mechanism of action, on basis of the manifestos written by the authors of the terms – Mikhail Epstein and Konstantin Kedrov respectively. Evolutionary processes greatly impact the outcomes of biological invasions. An extensive body of research suggests that invasive populations often undergo phenotypic and ecological divergence from their native sources. Evolution also operates at different and distinct stages during the invasion process. Thus, it is important to incorporate evolutionary change into frameworks of biological invasions because it allows us to conceptualize how these processes may facilitate or hinder invasion success. Neighborhoods with generational Mexican American populations may have high levels of block Social Cohesion and neighborhood Sense of Community. Streetcar-focused development via federal and local investment often spurs gentrification in neighborhoods with ethnic concentrations, which shifts neighborhood demographics towards more White and higher income households. The new residential and business investment in the neighborhood often has an impact on existing neighborhood social dynamics. This study includes mixed methods resident survey data of long term and newer residents. The U.S. Department of Energy Building America team Partnership for Improved Residential Construction is collaborating with Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to conduct a phased residential energy-efficiency retrofit program. This research seeks to determine the impacts on annual energy reductions from the installation of advanced residential technologies. Earlier project work involving the application of two levels of retrofit, shallow and deep, found average savings of 9% and 38%, respectively. Whole-house demand reduction among the deep retrofit homes averaged 39% during FPL's peak summer hour. Cross-feeding, a relationship wherein one organism consumes metabolites excreted by another, is a ubiquitous feature of natural and clinically-relevant microbial communities and could be a key factor promoting diversity in extreme and/or nutrient-poor environments. However, it remains unclear how readily cross-feeding interactions form, and therefore our ability to predict their emergence is limited. In this paper we developed a mathematical model parameterized using data from the biochemistry and ecology of an E. coli cross-feeding laboratory system. The model accurately captures short-term dynamics of the two competitors that have been observed empirically and we use it to systematically explore the stability …
