The Role Of Wnt3a In Bone-Muscle Biochemical Crosstalk And Promoting Myoblast Differentiation Among Mouse Primary Muscle Cells, Sarah Daggs
2016 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Bone and muscle crosstalk is a newly emerging field that focuses on the ability of bone cells and muscle cells to communicate with each other through mechanical and biochemical mechanisms. Until recently, the secretory function of both bone and muscle cells has largely been unexplored. My thesis focuses on continuing my faculty mentor’s current research on bone-muscle crosstalk by analyzing the effects of WNT3a, an important bone-secreted factor of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, on myogenesis. Myogenesis is the process of producing muscle cells from stem cells in the embryonic stages of development and the regeneration of muscle tissue after cell injury …
The Effect Of The Feminist Movement On Women’S Political Involvement In The United States, Natalie Thomas
The Effect Of The Feminist Movement On Women’S Political Involvement In The United States, Natalie Thomas
2016 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
As of 2016, the United States of America ranks 99th in the world --out of 193-- for women in legislature despite a long history of women’s rights movements. I compared the timeline of the feminist movement in the U.S. to the history of women’s political gains to determine what effect, if any, the women’s rights movement had on political engagement. With the chronology compared, it is easy to see if there were any specific points in the feminist movement that motivated women to become more politically active. Women’s political involvement increased after the 19th amendment was ratified, following World War …
Nanoscale Solutions To Tailor Fiber Architectures For Realizing Composites With Triumvirate Properties, Vishnu Priya Ramineni
Nanoscale Solutions To Tailor Fiber Architectures For Realizing Composites With Triumvirate Properties, Vishnu Priya Ramineni
All Theses
The paramount need for the development of multifunctional, smart and adaptive material systems for application in industries like automobile, aeronautical and aerospace is undeniable. Polymer composites are fast becoming the primary material options to this demand in light of their superior mechanical properties, low density, high corrosion resistance and easy manufacturability. The design flexibility offered in terms of achieving higher specific properties and light weighting is the key reason behind their success. Among all the properties that composites possess, it is the stiffness, strength and toughness that most applications mandate. These properties however, provide complimentary and contrasting characteristics for composites …
Effect Of Manures On Food Waste Degradation In Biocell, Md Nur Basit Zaman
Effect Of Manures On Food Waste Degradation In Biocell, Md Nur Basit Zaman
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Proper disposal of food waste is a challenge due to adverse effect on the environment through generation of excessive leachate and greenhouse gas (CH4). After food loss through the food supply chain, the food waste ends up mostly in landfills. A study by EPA showed food waste to be the second largest component found in landfill. However, food waste imposes major cost on landfill management, and demands a potential alternative disposal solution that can negate the adverse effects. Though anaerobic digester and composting are possible solutions for food waste disposal, the former is highly expensive while in later solution, a …

African And Afro-Caribbean Immigrant And Diaspora Perspectives Of Police Violence “It’S About Culture, Not Race”, Bemnet Tadesse Meshesha
Social Work Theses - Archive
Police violence with minority communities in the U.S. is a growing problem and has gained a lot of national attention in recent years. While the issue seems to be prevalent in the country, the current means to track the data on excessive use of force or deadly encounters by police is lacking because police departments report voluntarily. The Justice Department has announced recent initiatives to better track this information but news agencies like The Guardian and The Washington Post have taken on the role of documenting these encounters and keeping the public and even federal agencies informed thus far. While …

Numerical Investigation Of Vortex Generators And Jet In Cross-Flow Enhancements, Aditya Raman
Numerical Investigation Of Vortex Generators And Jet In Cross-Flow Enhancements, Aditya Raman
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Vortex generators have extensively been used over the past few decades for heat transfer applications. Their passive form of enhancement coupled with the ease of their implementation is the primary reason for their growing popularity. The streamwise counter rotating vortex pair (CVP) that is formed downstream of these vortex generators act as a source of energy that can set up stirring scales to enhance heat transfer and improve mixing. The CVP can be used to energize the boundary layer in the case of wall bounded flows, and as a consequence vortex generators have also been used to delay flow separation. …
Man Of Virtue, Man Of Vice: Maximilien Robespierre And Modern Manhood, Vanessa Marie Walker
Man Of Virtue, Man Of Vice: Maximilien Robespierre And Modern Manhood, Vanessa Marie Walker
History Theses - Archive
Since his death in 1794, Maximilien Robespierre’s legacy has been debated by scholars and non-scholars alike. Some have called him a blood-thirsty dictator who used his political power to execute innocent citizens who crossed him while others have called him the living embodiment of the French Revolution. This study will examine Robespierre using the lens of gender. The French Revolution was not just a time of great social and political upheaval; it was a time in which concepts of masculinity were transitioning from a focus on aristocratic honor and male beauty to bourgeois sensibilities. Through his belief in restraint in …

An Investigation Of Chlorate And Perchlorate In Onsite-Generated Hypochlorite, Kaleisha Haynes Miller
2016 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
This investigation evaluated the occurrence and concentration of chlorate and perchlorate in two low-strength onsite-generated hypochlorite systems in the DFW Metroplex, and attempted to correlate their concentrations to operating conditions and input materials of the generation process. Chlorate and perchlorate are disinfectant byproducts found in drinking water treated with hypochlorite and are known to pose potential health problems. Hypochlorite samples were quenched to remove chlorine and then analyzed using ion chromatography to determine the byproduct concentration. Results showed a correlation between byproduct concentration and the density of the solution as well as with the chlorine concentration. Other factors, such as …

The ruthenium (II) polypyridyl complexes [(phen)2Ru(tatpp)Ru(phen)2]4+, RPC4 and [(phen)2Ru(tatpp)]2+, RPC3 are promising anticancer candidates due to their observed cytotoxic effect against multiple cancer cell lines. These complexes contain a reactive oxygen species (ROS) creating redox-active tetraazatetrapyridopentacene (tatpp) bridge inducing cytotoxic activity against multiple cancer lines and types. Also, they have shown a selectivity towards malignant and normal cell tissue types that are of interest in cellular biological systems and treatment care. They exhibit the ability to regress tumor growth in mouse models, cleave DNA in gel assays and exhibit efficacies in a hypoxic environment similar to that of tumors in …

The Raton Formation is an Upper Cretaceous and Lower Paleocene unit that is interpreted to be deposited in various stages of high-accommodation fluvial systems. High-accommodation flood basin deposits are generally considered poor as reservoir bodies because sand bodies within these basins are considered to be small and disconnected within flood basin mud. Accordingly, they gain less attention in oil and gas exploration and in research. High-accommodation deposits in the Raton Formation contain several sand bodies with different sizes and geometries that could be good candidates for reservoir rocks. These sand bodies are common in outcrops of high-accommodation deposits in the …
Experimental Constraints On The Micromechanics Of Brittle Fragmentation During Earthquake Rupture, Troy J. Barber
Experimental Constraints On The Micromechanics Of Brittle Fragmentation During Earthquake Rupture, Troy J. Barber
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Various fault damage fabrics, from gouge in the principal slip zone, to fragmented and pulverized rocks in the fault damage zone, have been attributed to brittle deformation at high strain rates during earthquake rupture. These fault zone fabrics are significant in terms of 1) the information they contain about coseismic deformation mechanisms, 2) the role they play in dissipating energy and contributing to slip weakening during earthquake rupture, and 3) their influence on fault rock mechanical and hydraulic properties. Past experimental work has shown that there exists a critical threshold in stress-strain rate space through which rock failure transitions from …

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The advent of new drilling and completion technologies over the past two decades has made unconventional shale reservoirs the focus of much of the oil and gas exploration and production throughout the United States. Despite large estimated reserves, unconventional reservoirs are typically characterized by low porosity and extremely low matrix permeability, partly accounting for the relatively low recovery rates seen, ranging from 10-15%. Increasing production from unconventional reservoirs requires an understanding of the reservoir’s nano-petrophysical properties including pore throat size distribution and edge accessible porosity. Furthermore, an understanding of the relationship between TOC, mineralogy, and pore throat distribution is critical …
Fault Detection And Localization Techniques For Concurrent Programs, Jing Xu
Fault Detection And Localization Techniques For Concurrent Programs, Jing Xu
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Concurrency faults are hard to detect and localize due to the nondeterministic behavior of concurrent programs. In this dissertation, we present three approaches to detecting and localizing faults in concurrent programs. The first approach identifies erroneous event patterns in a failed concurrent program execution. Given a failed execution, we characterize the execution as a sequence of context-switch points and then use controlled execution to distinguish erroneous context-switch points from benign context-switch points. Erroneous context-switch points are used to derive erroneous event patterns, which allow the user to quickly localize the actual fault. Our experiments were conducted on thirteen programs. Seven …

Exploratory Data Analysis Over Online Community Networks, Azade Nazi
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
An online community network links entities (e.g., users, products) with various relationships (e.g., friendship, co-purchase) and make such information available for access through a web interface. There are numerous such networks on the web, ranging from Twitter, Instagram, which links users as ``followers-followees'', to amazon.com, ebay.com, which links products with relationships such as ``also buy''. Online community networks often feature a web interface that only allows local-neighborhood queries - i.e., given a entity (e.g., users, products) of the community network as input, the system only returns the immediate neighbors of the entity. Further, the rate limit constraint restricts the number …

Integrative Approaches For Large-Scale Biomedical Data Analysis, Ashis Kumer Biswas
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Advancement of the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), also known as the High Throughput Sequencing (HTS) technologies allow researchers investigate genome, transcriptome, or epigenome of any organism from any perspective, thereby contributing to the enrichment of the biomedical data repositories for many of the lesser known phenomena. The regulatory activities inside genome by the non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), the transcribed product of the long-neglected "junk DNA" molecules is one such phenomenon. While large-scale data about the ncRNAs are becoming publicly available, the computational challenges are being imposed to the bioinformaticians for efficient mining to get reliable answers to few subtle questions. Given …

Compliance With Hand Hygiene Policy In A Nursing Home: A Pilot Study, Nina Ling
2016 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
This project investigated the unanswered question of nursing staff’s practice and attitudes toward hand hygiene policy in a nursing home. Hand hygiene is the most essential measure known to limit nosocomial infection (Eveillard et al., 2011). The gerontologic population is one of the biggest population segments in the healthcare system due to the period of the baby boomers (Eveillard et al., 2011). This population is known to have a weaker immune system in comparison to younger generations (Travers et al., 2015). Infection prevention is especially important to prevent the geriatric cascade, and the decline in quality of life (Travers et …

2016 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The UTA Smart Hospital is a training facility for nursing students. Our goal is to create a web platform that allows the faculty to manage their hospital information in one place; previously, this information was scattered among different websites and files. We first derived requirements for the website, and using these requirements, our team then created a prototype of a website. It was found that our website had the capability of implementing most of the features needed by the hospital, yet we could only implement features that were considered to be a higher priority. In conclusion, the website was able …
Tracing The Dawn Of The Elapidae Through The Molecular Systematics And Historical Biogeography Of Old World Coralsnakes, Utpal Smart
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Much debated since the early 20th century, the evolutionary history and origin of the clinically important family Elapidae is of enormous interest. A persistent lack of higher-level phylogenetic resolution however, has impeded a clear understanding of the biogeography of this charismatic group of snakes. The traditional limiting factor in studies on higher-level elapid relationships has been the availability of samples from Old World coralsnakes (genera Sinomicrurus and Calliophis). Usually small, shy and fossorial, these animals are amongst the rarest Oriental snakes and their sampling in molecular studies has been sparse. Herein, primarily using molecular data, I work out the systematic …

Response Of Microbial Networks And Microbiomes To The Forest-To-Pasture Conversion In Amazon Soils, Md Abdul Wadad Khan
Biology Dissertations - Archive
The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest ecosystem in the world, and an extremely important region ecologically. Due to the growing human needs mainly for cattle ranching and cultivation, the rainforest has been in the process of clearing since 1970s losing an average of 25,000 km annually. This ecosystem conversion has a substantially adverse impact on biological diversities, in which the response of microbial diversity has not been studied until recently. Several studies showed that the conversion severely altered microbial diversities, with an increased alpha and decreased beta diversities. Given that microorganisms are closely associated with soil-associated functions, where …

The game of golf has a tumultuous history that includes long bouts with classism, racism and sexism. From its arrival to the United States more than 200 years ago, golf has found itself as a barometer for democracy. The symbolism for elitism demonstrated through the demographic makeup of its participants is evident and remained practically unchanged during this time. However, within public administration, there is a massive void in research related to municipal golf policy. This study provides a comprehensive review of municipal golf policy in cities and towns where golf facilities are located in order to determine whether the …

One of the areas which Electronics cooling research is focusing on is high heat fluxes and non-uniform power distribution. Cooling is always required for maximum junction temperature and as such it is important to mitigate hot spots. These hot spots result in large temperature differences across the surface of high-end devices such as multi-core chip scale packages. One possible solution for non-uniform power distribution across the chip can be use of dynamic cold plate cooling along with smart flow control device and thus this project aims at developing and testing of dynamic cold plate integrated with use of smart flow …

Fiber Bragg Grating (Fbg) Sensors For The Simultaneous Measurements Of Strain And Temperature, Abhay Kumar Singh
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
This research presents a single fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor that is capable of measuring the axial load and temperature simultaneously. The FBG sensor is coated with a block of recrystallized Lophine, which introduces the bandwidth modulation of the FBG reflectance spectrum. Thermal-mechanical testing of the Lophine-coated FBG sensor under different load and temperature combinations was carried out. It was discovered that the FBG bandwidth is linearly proportional to the applied load and temperature. By fitting the measured FBG bandwidths and central Bragg wavelengths as linear functions of the axial load and temperature, we demonstrated that the axial load and …

Effect Of Viscoelastic Modeling Of Pcb On The Board Level Reliability Of Wafer Chip Scale Package (Wcsp) In Comparison To Orthotropic Linear Elastic Modeling, Avinash Anaskure
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The assessment of board level solder joint reliability during thermal cycling is very important for electronic packages. During thermal cycling, the mismatch in Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) between the materials used in the package induces stress on the solder interconnects and result in deformation stresses. Finite element tools are widely used for rapid design optimization and also for understanding board level reliability issues. Lumped board properties approach, explicit geometry approach, and ECAD approach are the three widely used approaches for creating models for PCBs. In the lumped board properties approach, orthotropic elastic material properties are assigned to PCBs. However, …
