Hito Steyerl's "Duty-Free Art" As Politics And Pedagogy, Rachel Carina Sigismondi Dec 2016

Hito Steyerl's "Duty-Free Art" As Politics And Pedagogy, Rachel Carina Sigismondi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

How does contemporary art engage the contemporary, exactly? Artist Hito Steyerl actively engages this question in her recent works. One might notice upon visiting a Hito Steyerl exhibition that her video works often include recordings of lectures she has given to live audiences in art spaces. Because Steyerl is engaged in this pedagogical practice as an artist, can it be considered contemporary art? Steyerl’s written, lectured, and visual works engage the contemporary moment prodigiously, and cannot be eschewed in an analysis of the perpetually evolving nature of contemporary art. With the use of critical, theoretical and formal analytical tools, this …

€˜My Kind Of Partisan’ €“ The Role Of Party Leaders In Shaping Party Attachments | ‘My Kind Of Partisan’ – The Role Of Party Leaders In Shaping Party Attachments, Alexa Bankert

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Hardly any political scientist would disagree that partisanship is a key variable in political behavior research: It predicts vote choice, political attitudes and core values as well as party leader evaluations and political activism. We observe these effects especially among strong partisans – a segment of the American electorate that has notably increased in recent years. While the consequences of strong partisanship for political behavior are well-known, we still lack a theoretical framework as well as corresponding empirical evidence that explains why some partisans are deeply attached to their party whereas others lack that type of strong commitment. I address …

The Impact Of Campaign Finance On Roll Call Behavior, Voter Perceptions, And Democratic Responsiveness, David Stack Dec 2016

The Impact Of Campaign Finance On Roll Call Behavior, Voter Perceptions, And Democratic Responsiveness, David Stack

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Levels of partisanship and polarization within Congress are at high levels. However, this development defies the expectation of Downsian models. My dissertation attributes polarization to the activity of political donors. Using a database of over 13.5 million individual donors, I use advanced time series models to show that donors have been increasingly rewarding Republicans who toe the party line. In the second section of my dissertation, I explore how incumbent politicians may be using these campaign contributions to offset any potential electoral penalties for excessive partisanship. My examination of survey evidence shows that incumbents may be using campaign spending to …

Light-Induced Self-Assembly And Diffusion Of Nanoclusters, Wenxuan Lian Dec 2016

Light-Induced Self-Assembly And Diffusion Of Nanoclusters, Wenxuan Lian

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Novel methods to build multiple types of three-dimensional structures from various nanoscale components are the most exciting and challenging questions in nano-science. The properties of the assembled structures can be potentially and designed, but the development of such approaches is challenging. In order to realize such rational assembly, a tunable interaction medium is often introduced into the system. Soft matter, such as polymers, surfactants and biomolecules are used to modify the surfaces of the nanoscale building blocks. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strands are known as polynucleotides since they are composed of simpler units called nucleotides. There are unique base pairing rules …

On The Fracture Toughness And Crack Growth Resistance Of Bio-Inspired Thermal Spray Hybrid Composites, Michael Murray Resnick

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Nature has presented a remarkable bill of materials which show excellent mechanical properties. Among those which have been extensively studied are wood, bone, rocks, spider silk, nacre etc. Interestingly all of these materials are primarily known to have great fracture resistance and present excellent example of natural and layer-by-layer evolution of materials. These materials have inspired the current research society to synthesize new generation materials with mechanical properties beyond the conventional materials such as metal, ceramic and polymers. Nacre, one of the most researched natural materials, is present in particular sea-shells and shows a layered brick-and-mortar structure. Designing nacre-like structures …

Application Of Lattice Boltzmann Methods In Complex Mass Transfer Systems, Ning Sun

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is a novel computational fluid dynamics method that can easily handle complex and dynamic boundaries, couple local or interfacial interactions/reactions, and be easily parallelized allowing for simulation of large systems. While most of the current studies in LBM mainly focus on fluid dynamics, however, the inherent power of this method makes it an ideal candidate for the study of mass transfer systems involving complex/dynamic microstructures and local reactions. In this thesis, LBM is introduced to be an alternative computational method for the study of electrochemical energy storage systems (Li-ion batteries (LIBs) and electric double layer capacitors …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Hunter-gatherers spread to nearly every corner of the planet in large part due to their flexible ability to forage for high-quality foods in diverse environments. The study of human foraging behavior is therefore crucial to understanding the proximate and ultimate factors that have shaped human evolutionary history. Although not necessarily in an evolutionary context, the foraging behavior of Paleoindian hunter-gatherers in North America has been studied for over a century. Researchers have paid particular attention to Paleoindian foragers’ hunting of big game across the grasslands of the Great Plains, shedding light on “what†prey Paleoindians foraged, “where†foraging occurred on …

Novel Processing Of Ceramics With Polymorphic Control, Gagan Jodhani

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Polymorphism is an important phenomenon exhibited by many materials, including ceramic oxides. The availability of multiple structural configurations for the same chemical composition opens the pathway to a large number of phases with distinct properties. The formation of the crystal structures can be directly correlated to the processing temperature and/or pressure as well as the particle size for nanomaterials. This work focuses on the tailored synthesis of the desired polymorphs of binary and ternary metal oxides through nanoscale processes with emphasis on flame spray pyrolysis. Flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) is a scalable nano-manufacturing process used for the synthesis of oxide …

Evolution Of Immiscibly Blended Functionalized Polymers With Respect To Cure Parameters And Formulation, Nicholas Walter Heller Dec 2016

Evolution Of Immiscibly Blended Functionalized Polymers With Respect To Cure Parameters And Formulation, Nicholas Walter Heller

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Powder coatings are becoming ubiquitous in the coating marketplace due to the absence of solvents in their formulation, but they have yet to see implementation in low-reflectance outdoor applications. This demand could be met by utilizing polymer blends formulated with low loadings of matting agents and pigments. The goal of this research is a thorough characterization of prototype low-reflectance coatings through several analytical techniques. Prototypical thermoset blends consist of functionalized polyurethanes rendered immiscible by differences in polar and hydrogen bonding characteristics, resulting in a surface roughened by droplet domains. Analysis of both pigmented and control clear films was performed. This …

To capture the heavy tails and the volatility clustering of asset returns is always an important topic in nancial market. We studies two projects related to the Alpha Stable distribution and Classical Tempered Stable(CTS) distribution respectively which both have desired properties to accommodate heavy-tails and capture skewness in nancial series. (1) In the major part of the rst project, we introduce the algorithm of indirect inference method. By using the skewed-t distribution as an auxiliary model which is easier to handle, we can estimate the parameters of the Alpha Stable distribution since these two models have the same numbers of …

Interrogation Of Possible Imaging Conditions For Radiation Sensitive Metal Organic Frameworks In Transmission Electron Microscopes, Wei-Yu Pan Dec 2016

Interrogation Of Possible Imaging Conditions For Radiation Sensitive Metal Organic Frameworks In Transmission Electron Microscopes, Wei-Yu Pan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Although transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is extremely powerful at the characterization of materials on the nano- and atomic scales, the advantages introduce accompanying drawbacks. That is, high energy electrons offer the structural information while imparting radiation damage to the samples. Metal organic frameworks are a new class of materials that have potential applications in gas storage and catalysis. A direct imaging of their lattice structures is highly desired. However, these samples are extremely radiation sensitive. In order to characterize their structures, low-dose TEM need to be performed. To date, there is a lack of a systematic of radiation study of …

Dilation Behavior Of Thermal Spray Coatings, Miryan Lorena Bejarano Dec 2016

Dilation Behavior Of Thermal Spray Coatings, Miryan Lorena Bejarano

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Thermal Spray (TS) is a very versatile manufacturing process to deposit thick coatings on a variety of substrates. Coatings are used in protective (i.e. wear, chemical attack, high temperature, etc.) and functional (i.e. sensors) applications. TS coatings have a unique lamellar microstructure as a result of the overlapping of millions of molten and partially-molten particles. During processing, high deformation by impact, high temperature, and rapid solidification lead to a complex hierarchical material system that contains a high amount of microstructural defects. The presence of defects in the microstructure contribute to differences in property values in comparison to bulk materials. Thermal …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Silicon carbide is a promising semiconductor material with more preferable properties than the traditional materials like silicon dioxide and gallium arsenide. With large band-gap, high breakdown voltage, high thermal conductivity and good resistance in radiation environment, SiC is widely used in electronic devices especially under high frequency, high voltage and high temperature. Despite of its good properties, the application of SiC is limited by the growth of high quality single crystal boule, namely, the defects inside the SiC crystals have deleterious effects on the performance of devices made of it. In this thesis, the combination of techniques including Synchrotron White …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

New imaging technologies are rapidly changing the nature of morphological data by making possible the creation and sharing of large samples of digital scan data, creating a need for high-throughput morphometric methods. A promising example of this can be found in morphological topographic analysis, a suite of algorithms for describing surface shape properties. Topographic methods have been used effectively to address dietary functional morphology of molars in a number of mammal radiations. These methods may be also useful for answering other questions concerning molar shape. Empirical models of mouse molar morphogenesis include predictions concerning molar shape variation that could apply …

G-Alpha-Q Regulation On Cardiac Autophagy, Shengnan Liu Dec 2016

G-Alpha-Q Regulation On Cardiac Autophagy, Shengnan Liu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Receptors that activate the heterotrimeric G protein Gαq are thought to play a role in the development of heart failure. Dysregulation of autophagy occurs in some pathological cardiac conditions including heart failure, but whether Gαq is involved in this process is unknown. A cardiomyocyte-specific transgenic mouse model of inducible Gαq activation (termed GαqQ209L) was used to address this question. Autophagy is a quality control and recycling process in which double-membrane vesicles called autophagosomes enclose intracellular materials and send them to lysosomes for degradation. After 7 days of Gαq activation, GαqQ209L hearts contained more autophagic vacuoles than wild type (WT) hearts. …

Synaptonemal Complex Disassembly Activates Rad51-Mediated Double Strand Break Repair During Budding Yeast Meiosis, Evelyn Joann Prugar Dec 2016

Synaptonemal Complex Disassembly Activates Rad51-Mediated Double Strand Break Repair During Budding Yeast Meiosis, Evelyn Joann Prugar

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Meiosis is a highly conserved specialized cell division that occurs in many organisms, including budding yeast and mammals. Meiosis divides the chromosome number of the cell in half to create gametes for sexual reproduction. A single round of chromosome duplication is followed by two rounds of chromosome segregation, Meiosis I (homologs segregate) and Meiosis II (sister chromatids segregate). Proper segregation at Meiosis I requires that homologs are connected by both crossovers and sister chromatid cohesion. Crossovers are formed by the repair of double strand breaks (DSBs) preferentially by the homolog. The choice of repair template is determined at the time …

Bet Inhibition Releases The Mediator Complex From Specific Cis Elements In Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells, Anand Shripad Bhagwat Dec 2016

Bet Inhibition Releases The Mediator Complex From Specific Cis Elements In Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells, Anand Shripad Bhagwat

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a hematologic malignancy with a 5-year survival rate of less than 30%. We recently identified the bromodomain and extraterminal (BET) protein Brd4 as a therapeutic target in AML, and several trials are currently evaluating the clinical utility of BET inhibitors for this disease. BET inhibitors displace Brd4 from chromatin and subsequently reduce the expression of key oncogenes, such as Myc, leading to AML blast differentiation and cell death. However, the mechanism by which Brd4 maintains oncogene expression in AML is still unclear. We hypothesized that Brd4 functions by working with other coactivators in AML to …

Mantle Composition And Temperature Of Western North America Revealed From In-Situ Velocity Measurements Of Klb-1 Peridotite, Xuebing Wang Dec 2016

Mantle Composition And Temperature Of Western North America Revealed From In-Situ Velocity Measurements Of Klb-1 Peridotite, Xuebing Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The composition and thermal structure of the Earth’s mantle, especially the mantle transition zone, still remain controversial due to the lack of direct access to the Earth’s interior. An important geophysical approach to constrain the mineralogical composition of the mantle is to compare seismic profiles (e.g. | PREM and AK135) with the elasticity of candidate compositional models calculated by averaging schemes based on the phase equilibrium and elasticity data of individual mantle minerals. However, chemical reactions, element partitioning and diffusion cannot be fully taken into account by this approach. In this study, I conducted direct velocity measurements on KLB-1 peridotite …

Wave Gradiometry And Its Link With Helmholtz Equation Solutions Applied To Usarray, Yuanyuan Liu Dec 2016

Wave Gradiometry And Its Link With Helmholtz Equation Solutions Applied To Usarray, Yuanyuan Liu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Wave gradiometry is an array processing technique using the shape of seismic wavefields captured by dense seismic arrays to estimate fundamental wave propagation characteristics [Langston, 2007a,b; Liang and Langston, 2009]. We first explore a compatibility relation that links the spatial gradients to displacements and velocity seismograms through two unknown coefficients: A⃗ and B⃗. We show that the A⃗-coefficient corresponds to the gradient of logarithmic amplitude and the B⃗ -coefficient corresponds approximately to the local wave slowness. These coefficients are solved through iterative, damped least- squares inversions to provide estimates of four gradiometry products: dynamic phase velocity, back-azimuth, radiation pattern and …

Justices Of The Peace, Lawyers And The People: Local Courts And The Contested Professionalization Of Law In Late Colonial New York, Sung Yup Kim Dec 2016

Justices Of The Peace, Lawyers And The People: Local Courts And The Contested Professionalization Of Law In Late Colonial New York, Sung Yup Kim

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Legal professionalization in New York was a contested social process entailing myriad local struggles over the use of land and credit. New York’s legal professionalization gained momentum in the mid-eighteenth century, as provincial lawyers pursued a collective mission to monopolize doctrinal interpretation and procedural application of English common law in the colony. The on-the-ground application of that mission frequently pitted lawyers against commoners, many of whom preferred the informal resolutions provided by lay justices, jurors, arbitrators, and town meetings. Professionalized law determined cases with doctrines and procedures alien to most laypeople. It disrupted the local communities’ means of equitable dispute …

Reconstruction Of Atmospheric [Co] And Stable Co Isotopes δ13c And δ18o Over The Last 250 Years | Reconstruction Of Atmospheric [Co] And Stable Co Isotopes Δ13c And Δ18o Over The Last 250 Years, Alicia Mullaley

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a trace gas that influences atmospheric chemical reactions. CO is relatively short-lived (weeks to months) in the atmosphere and therefore spatially variable with a modern concentration range from 35 parts per billion (ppb) to 150 ppb (Globalview-CO, 2009). Because of its lifetime, atmospheric carbon monoxide is a good tracer for hemispheric processes; it is long enough to be transported over hemispheric distances but is short enough where there can be large seasonal and interannual variations. Therefore, measuring the variations in CO from bubbles trapped in Antarctic ice can reveal processes that occur in the Southern Hemisphere …

Development Of The Simplified Land Model (Slm) And Its Application To The Diurnal Cycle Of Precipitation Over Land, Jungmin Lee Dec 2016

Development Of The Simplified Land Model (Slm) And Its Application To The Diurnal Cycle Of Precipitation Over Land, Jungmin Lee

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The diurnal cycle of convection is a key to understanding the climate and weather in the context of the Earth’s energy and water cycles. Yet, the well-observed late afternoon to early evening precipitation maximum over most of inland regions still remains one of the poorly understood features of continental convection. Many numerical weather and global climate models (GCMs) have had difficulty capturing the correct diurnal cycle of convection over land. Not only does this deficiency create a concern regarding the consistency of GCMs’ physical parameterizations, but it also requires a better understating of physical processes that control the land-atmosphere interactions. …
