Asymptotic Behavior Of Even-Order Damped Differential Equations With P-Laplacian Like Operators And Deviating Arguments, Qingmin Liu, Martin Bohner, Said R. Grace, Tongxing Li Dec 2016

Asymptotic Behavior Of Even-Order Damped Differential Equations With P-Laplacian Like Operators And Deviating Arguments, Qingmin Liu, Martin Bohner, Said R. Grace, Tongxing Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the asymptotic properties of the solutions of a class of even-order damped differential equations with p-Laplacian like operators, delayed and advanced arguments. We present new theorems that improve and complement related contributions reported in the literature. Several examples are provided to illustrate the practicability, maneuverability, and efficiency of the results obtained. An open problem is proposed.

An Efficient And Long-Time Accurate Third-Order Algorithm For The Stokes–Darcy System, Wenbin Chen, Max Gunzburger, Dong Sun, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A third order in time numerical IMEX-type algorithm for the Stokes–Darcy system for flows in fluid saturated karst aquifers is proposed and analyzed. a novel third-order Adams–Moulton scheme is used for the discretization of the dissipative term whereas a third-order explicit Adams–Bashforth scheme is used for the time discretization of the interface term that couples the Stokes and Darcy components. the scheme is efficient in the sense that one needs to solve, at each time step, decoupled Stokes and Darcy problems. Therefore, legacy Stokes and Darcy solvers can be applied in parallel. the scheme is also unconditionally stable and, with …

Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper Reflectance And Ndvi 27-Year Time Series Inconsistencies Due To Satellite Orbit Change, Hankui Zhang, David P. Roy Dec 2016

Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper Reflectance And Ndvi 27-Year Time Series Inconsistencies Due To Satellite Orbit Change, Hankui Zhang, David P. Roy

GSCE Faculty Publications

The Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor provided the longest single mission terrestrial remote sensing data record but temporally sparse station keeping maneuvers meant that the Landsat 5 orbit changed over the 27 year mission life. Long-term Landsat 5 TM reflectance inconsistencies may be introduced by orbit change induced solar zenith variations combined with surface reflectance anisotropy, commonly described by the Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF). This study quantifies the local overpass time and observed solar zenith angle changes for all the Landsat 5 TM images available at two latitudinally separated locations along the same north-south Landsat path (27) in …

Characterizing Cropland Phenology In Major Grain Production Areas Of Russia, Ukraine, And Kazakhstan By The Synergistic Use Of Passive Microwave And Visible To Near Infrared Data, Woubet G. Alemu, Geoffrey M. Henebry Dec 2016

Characterizing Cropland Phenology In Major Grain Production Areas Of Russia, Ukraine, And Kazakhstan By The Synergistic Use Of Passive Microwave And Visible To Near Infrared Data, Woubet G. Alemu, Geoffrey M. Henebry

GSCE Faculty Publications

We demonstrate the synergistic use of surface air temperature retrieved from AMSR-E (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer on Earth observing satellite) and two vegetation indices (VIs) from the shorter wavelengths of MODIS (MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) to characterize cropland phenology in the major grain production areas of Northern Eurasia from 2003–2010. We selected 49 AMSR-E pixels across Ukraine, Russia, and Kazakhstan, based on MODIS land cover percentage data. AMSR-E air temperature growing degree-days (GDD) captures the weekly, monthly, and seasonal oscillations, and well correlated with station GDD. A convex quadratic (CxQ) model that linked thermal time measured as growing degree-days to …

Towards Decision Making Under Interval Uncertainty, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2016

Towards Decision Making Under Interval Uncertainty, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we know the exact form of the objective function, and we know the optimal decision corresponding to each values of the corresponding parameters xi. What should we do if we do not know the exact values of xi, and instead, we only know each xi with uncertainty -- e.g., with interval uncertainty? In this case, one of the most widely used approaches is to select, for each i, one value from the corresponding interval -- usually, a midpoint -- and to use the exact-case optimal decision corresponding to the selected values. …

Why Rsa? A Pedagogical Comment, Pedro Barragan Olague, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the most widely used cryptographic algorithms is the RSA algorithm in which a message m encoded as the remainder c of me modulo n, where n and e are given numbers -- forming a public code. A similar transformation cd mod n$, for an appropriate secret code d, enables us to reconstruct the original message. In this paper, we provide a pedagogical explanation for this algorithm.

A Simple Geometric Explanation Of Occam's Razor, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2016

A Simple Geometric Explanation Of Occam's Razor, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Occam's razor states that out of possible explanations, plans, and designs, we should select the simplest one. It turns out that in many practical situations, the simplest explanation indeed turns out to be the correct one, the simplest plan is often the most successful, etc. But why this happens is not very clear. In this paper, we provide a simple geometric explanation of Occam's razor.

Specifying A Global Optimization Solver In Z, Angel F. Garcia Contreras, Yoonsik Cheon Dec 2016

Specifying A Global Optimization Solver In Z, Angel F. Garcia Contreras, Yoonsik Cheon

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

NumConSol is an interval-based numerical constraint and optimization solver to find a global optimum of a function. It is written in Python. In this document, we specify the NumConSol solver in Z, a formal specification language based on sets and predicates. The aim is to provide a solid foundation for restructuring and refactoring the current implementation of the NumConSol solver as well as facilitating its future improvements. The formal specification also allows us to design more effective testing for the solver, e.g., generating test cases from the specification.

Impact Of A Student-Scheduled Child Care Program On Parents' Educational Goals, Barbara Carter Dec 2016

Impact Of A Student-Scheduled Child Care Program On Parents' Educational Goals, Barbara Carter

Administrative Issues Journal

The purpose of this study is to examine what, if any, impact a Student-scheduled Child Care (SSCC) program had on the families of students completing their higher education goals at a college in the southwestern region of the United States. Student completion rate is a concern for most college and university administrators. Research conducted by the Gates foundation determined that over three quarters of former students surveyed felt that they would have graduated if the college or university had offered child care (Johnson, Ott, & DuPont, 2011). This correlational and descriptive research study revealed what student families thought about the …

Advanced Placement U.S. History And The Application Of Social Justice, Katherine A. Curry, Lou L. Sabina, Jon Loffi Dec 2016

Advanced Placement U.S. History And The Application Of Social Justice, Katherine A. Curry, Lou L. Sabina, Jon Loffi

Administrative Issues Journal

Recent changes to Advanced Placement U.S. History have sparked a national debate concerning goals and purposes of college level history courses. Critics suggest that the revisions result in a national curriculum that promotes a revisionist history perspective. Defenders claim that revisions are an important step in preparing students for 21st century citizenship. This document analysis identifies key differences between the 2010 and 2014 AP U.S. History frameworks and considers changes made in 2015 by College Board in response to the national debate. The challenges of applying a social justice lens to curriculum are discussed, and suggestions are made concerning the …

Free Articles And Accounting For The Timing Effect, Nursyeha Yahaya, Chee Hsien Aaron (Zheng Zhixian) Tay

Research Collection Library

Various studies have attempted to assess the amount of free full text available on the web and recent work have suggested that we are close to the 50% mark for freely available articles (Archambault et al. 2013; Bjork et al. 2010; Jamali and Nabavi 2015). It is natural to wonder if this might reduce researchers' reliance on library subscriptions for access. To do so, we need to determine not just what papers researchers are citing to that are free today, but to estimate if the papers they were citing were freely available at the time they were citing it. We …

American Muslims: How The “American Creed” Fosters Assimilation And Pluralism, James R. Moore Dec 2016

American Muslims: How The “American Creed” Fosters Assimilation And Pluralism, James R. Moore

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

This article examines the status of American Muslims in the United States in relationship to other cultural groups and some of the widespread stereotypes that plague Muslims in contemporary society. Much has been written about the discrimination faced by Muslims, particularly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, spawned by religious, racial, and ethnic bigotry. Some polls show many Americans harbor some prejudices against Muslims, but these prejudices have not resulted in widespread violence or discrimination; although there has been some violence and discrimination experienced by some Muslims, the empirical data show that the majority of American Muslims are very successful …

Hannah Arendt And Natives As Extras: Towards An Ontology Of Palestinian Presence?, Francesco Melfi Dec 2016

Hannah Arendt And Natives As Extras: Towards An Ontology Of Palestinian Presence?, Francesco Melfi

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

The essay grew out of Hannah Arendt’s reflection on the roles and uses of the mask, a meditation on the ontology of the transient public figure or persona vs. one that restitutes the person to the unadulterated Selbstdenken dimension of the Epicurean philosopher-in-hiding. The author individuates in the resulting caesura between the donning and the taking off of the mask the primal source of that paradox in Hanna Arendt’s political behavior that alternately compelled her to confront the ontological presence of the Palestinian people, and made her withdraw into philosophical hiding without ever really coming to terms with it. In …

On Confucius’S Ideology Of Aesthetic Order, Li Wang Dec 2016

On Confucius’S Ideology Of Aesthetic Order, Li Wang

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Advocating order, order for all things, and taking order as beauty is the core element of Confucius’s aesthetic ideology. Confucius’s thought of aesthetic order is different from others of the “hundred schools of thoughts” in the pre-Qin period, and is also diverse from the Western value of aesthetic order. Confucius’s thought of aesthetic order has its own unique value system, which has become the mainstream value of aesthetic order in the Chinese society for 2000 years until today, after being integrated with the Chinese feudal imperial system in early Han Dynasty. This paper illustrates Confucius’s ideology of aesthetic order from …

Quality Of Condensate From Air-Handling Units, Diana D. Glawe, Marilyn Wooten, B Lye

Engineering Faculty Research

Areas with humid climates, such as Georgia, are currently experiencing a severe drought. Collecting condensate from large AHUs for on-site use is compelling, but how do you assess the quality of this water? The authors discuss how condensate from properly maintained large AHUs is high-quality water. They go on to explain how system design and maintenance affect its quality, and they give the readers guidance for how to use the condensate for on-site applications
