International Yeats Studies, Issue 1

International Yeats Studies

International Yeats Studies was conceived by the organizing board of the International Yeats Society as a means of bringing together national and other Yeats societies around the world. This journal is designed to complement the Yeats Annual, published under the general editorship of Warwick Gould. International Yeats Studies will be published twice a year and aims to include a variety of approaches to the study of Yeats. The editorial board draws together scholars from across the globe, and we hope that when it is possible, the journal will publish important essays translated into English from other languages. In addition …

Successful Rti/Mtss From Tier 1 Through 4 Requires Everyone., Leonora Clarkson Dec 2016

Successful Rti/Mtss From Tier 1 Through 4 Requires Everyone., Leonora Clarkson

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

RTI/MTSS will be successful if data review of academics and behavior begins with Tier 1 and moves through tier 4. Tier 1 is the most important to evaluate, and sometimes it is the last to be discussed when looking at RTI/MTSS. This session will start with Tier 1 information focusing on universal screening, classroom management, rigor of academics, PBIS, and motivating students. When tier 1 is implemented with success, implementing tiers 2 through 4 become a natural process. Schools need to talk with parents to ensure they understand family history and what has been tried at home. Parents can share …

Project-Based Learning And Design-Focused Projects To Motivate Secondary Mathematics Students, Kelly W. Remijan Dec 2016

Project-Based Learning And Design-Focused Projects To Motivate Secondary Mathematics Students, Kelly W. Remijan

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This article illustrates how mathematics teachers can develop design-focused projects, related to project-based learning, to motivate secondary mathematics students. With first-hand experience as a secondary mathematics teacher, I provide a series of steps related to the engineering design process, which are helpful to teachers in developing design-focused projects, describe various projects that have been developed and implemented within my classroom, and share project artifacts illustrated by pictures, student work, and student comments. Referring to the MUSIC Model of Academic Motivation and reflecting upon personal observations, student outcomes, and student comments, I provide personal insight on how design-focused projects can be …

Re-Conceptualizing Research Misconceptions: Top Ten Myths Demystified, Faisal S. Al-Maamari Dr Dec 2016

Re-Conceptualizing Research Misconceptions: Top Ten Myths Demystified, Faisal S. Al-Maamari Dr

i.e.: inquiry in education

It is generally acknowledged that novice researchers may not be adequately prepared to engage in/with research and that an increasingly widening divide exists between researchers and teachers, and therefore between research and practice. To explore this gap, this paper addresses ten of the most popular misconceptions novice researchers hold in engaging in research about their practice, and offers advice to these researchers towards teacher research engagement. Amongst the issues I describe are the various forms of research, the relationship between research and reflective or exploratory practice, issues pertaining to sampling, methods of data collection, research site access and the juxtaposition …

Engineering Design For Engineering Design: Benefits, Models, And Examples From Practice, Ken L. Turner Jr., Melissa Kirby, Sue Bober Dec 2016

Engineering Design For Engineering Design: Benefits, Models, And Examples From Practice, Ken L. Turner Jr., Melissa Kirby, Sue Bober

i.e.: inquiry in education

Engineering design, a framework for studying and solving societal problems, is a key component of STEM education. It is also the area of greatest challenge within the Next Generation Science Standards, NGSS. Many teachers feel underprepared to teach or create activities that feature engineering design, and integrating a lesson plan of core content with an engineering design perspective can be a daunting task. Nevertheless, engineering design can be a useful tool in building students’ confidence in science, engaging students in science classes, building relationships with the community, and empowering under-represented groups.

The problem-solving approach of engineering design can become a …

Practitioner Research: A “Refreshing Change” For Professional Learning, Jennifer K. Allen Dec 2016

Practitioner Research: A “Refreshing Change” For Professional Learning, Jennifer K. Allen

i.e.: inquiry in education

This article discusses a study that utilized a practitioner research approach to professional learning (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2009) that used student-created digital photo stories combined with focused teacher conversations guided by the NOT-ICE Teacher Discussion Protocol (Author, 2016) to explore why classroom teachers sometimes fail to notice the gifts and talents of emergent bilinguals of Latin@ heritage. Six elementary teachers participated in six small-group, collaborative discussion sessions in which they acted as co-researchers. Findings illuminate the significance of the research design in providing an effective professional learning experience. Highlighted design elements include the importance of using visual media as a …

The Trifecta Approach And More: Student Perspectives On Strategies For Successful Online Lectures, Laura Jacobi Dec 2016

The Trifecta Approach And More: Student Perspectives On Strategies For Successful Online Lectures, Laura Jacobi

i.e.: inquiry in education

The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of students regarding what was effective about the way in which the online lectures were structured in an upper level online organizational communication course. Student evaluations from 27 students were used, with questions focused upon the structure of lectures in the online course as compared to other online courses and to traditional classrooms. Qualitative analyses reveal the use of the trifecta approach, the use of audio voice-overs with PowerPoint slides, the concise nature of lectures, the ability to review them, and the use of key points as significant to student …

Okay, Our Courses Are Online, But Are They Ada Compliant? An Investigation Of Faculty Awareness Of Accessibility At A Midwestern University, John A. Huss, Shannon Eastep

i.e.: inquiry in education

The purpose of this study was to investigate the current extent of our faculty’s familiarity with the rights, responsibilities, and resources pertaining to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Workforce Rehabilitation Act insofar as compliance and accommodations for online courses. Through the collection of data we sought to heighten awareness and encourage faculty members to look at and think about how their online programs and courses are consistent with accessible design, thereby providing a real opportunity for continuous improvement in both course design and implementation. An electronic researcher-created survey instrument revealed that accessibility compliance for …

The Impact Of Mindfulness-Based Interventions On Stress Eating, Emotional Eating, And Binge Eating: A Literature Review, Kira L. Minot Dec 2016

The Impact Of Mindfulness-Based Interventions On Stress Eating, Emotional Eating, And Binge Eating: A Literature Review, Kira L. Minot

Food Science and Nutrition

This literature review examines the impact of various mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) on the obesity-related eating behaviors of stress eating, emotional eating, and binge eating. With the inconsistency of the weight loss industry to provide long-term weight loss results, the United States is in need of alternative methods of weight loss and weight maintenance to combat the current overweight and obesity epidemic. MBIs are thought to be beneficial when targeted at behaviors of weight gain because mindfulness promotes an individual’s awareness of present physical and emotional sensations within the body, including hunger and satiety cues. Self-acceptance and stress reduction are also …
