Image Of Art Work, Ruochen Zhou

Professional Practices (ART 399)

I am still trying to show the freedom in my works that an artistic life provides to me and also find the process of making artwork is a way to release inner stress. At this time, I still focus on the sculpture, because making sculpture is perfect for creative expression and release of tension. In this semester, I change the style about the way I make art, there are more rotate, line combination, hang spring and materialism on my project, I think that is more suitable to show the meaning of freedom.

I still enjoy making other things as well …

A Novel Rrm3 Function In Restricting Dna Replication Via An Orc5-Binding Domain Is Genetically Separable From Rrm3 Function As An Atpase/Helicase In Facilitating Fork Progression, Salahuddin Syed, Claus Desler, Lene J Rasmussen, Kristina H Schmidt Dec 2016

A Novel Rrm3 Function In Restricting Dna Replication Via An Orc5-Binding Domain Is Genetically Separable From Rrm3 Function As An Atpase/Helicase In Facilitating Fork Progression, Salahuddin Syed, Claus Desler, Lene J Rasmussen, Kristina H Schmidt

Molecular Biosciences Faculty Publications

In response to replication stress cells activate the intra-S checkpoint, induce DNA repair pathways, increase nucleotide levels, and inhibit origin firing. Here, we report that Rrm3 associates with a subset of replication origins and controls DNA synthesis during replication stress. The N-terminal domain required for control of DNA synthesis maps to residues 186-212 that are also critical for binding Orc5 of the origin recognition complex. Deletion of this domain is lethal to cells lacking the replication checkpoint mediator Mrc1 and leads to mutations upon exposure to the replication stressor hydroxyurea. This novel Rrm3 function is independent of its established role …

The Microbiome Of The Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin, 1791): Temporal And Spatial Variation, Environmental Influences, And Its Impact On Host Physiology, Melissa L. Pierce

Doctoral Dissertations

Prokaryotic communities are ubiquitous in every environment on earth. In the oceans they are integral to a number of biogeochemical processes and form the base of marine food webs. Microbes have also coevolved with eukaryotes, aiding in a variety of host functions including digestion and nutrient absorption, development of the immune system, and protection against pathogens. The disruption of these microbial communities, especially in the gut, has been linked to altered health statuses and physiological functions in a range of hosts. The eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791), is a valuable economic and ecological resource in near-shore environments. As a …

Year Five Of Your Qep: Are We There Yet?, Kelly Whealan George, Aaron D. Clevenger

Publications

QEP year five! Are we there yet? So much has changed within and outside your university. Does your QEP implementation and original intent even resemble the original proposal? Reorganizations, budget changes, more reorganizations, personnel shifts, memory lapse, and new initiatives are all taking their toll on your planned implementation of the QEP. Some key individuals are no longer in their positions, while new people have joined. Some have conveniently “forgotten” about the implementation phase of QEP, let alone assessment. Nonetheless, you still have the task to implement the QEP and prepare the Fifth‐Year Interim Report! During this session, key QEP …

Our Own Devices, Joseph Clair Dec 2016

Our Own Devices, Joseph Clair

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

A flickering glow welcomed me to my university’s chapel service. Votive candles? If only. No, these were glowing smartphones, as thick as fireflies on a summer’s evening. It was a scene of tremendous absurdity, like a man watching TV while making love to his wife: distracted people distracting themselves during a sacred act. It struck me as oddly understandable (I even joined them to check my email during the sermon), yet also as the foretaste of some looming spiritual crisis. So much has been written lately about the perils of smartphone use that I’m reluctant to join the chorus. Yet …

Pathways To A Brighter Future: Narratives Of Latino Students’ Perceptions At Community College, Columba Myra Gaytan-Morales Dec 2016

Pathways To A Brighter Future: Narratives Of Latino Students’ Perceptions At Community College, Columba Myra Gaytan-Morales

Theses and Dissertations

Helping Latino students into leadership roles begins with a college experience. Latino students are the largest and fastest growing student population within community colleges, yet they are less likely to graduate. Blame is often placed on minority students and their families for the students’ poor academic performance. Deficit thinking models have impacted this way of thinking and this adds to the variety of factors that prevent students’ from successfully completing a college degree. An analysis of nine Latino students’ college experiences was examined to determine the types of barriers that were evident. Critical Race Theory and Latino Critical Race narrative …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this quantitative, descriptive, survey research was to examine pre-Kindergarten–Grade 8 teacher’s perceptions regarding their preparedness, propensity, and felt value of using Facebook and Twitter for parent–teacher communication. The 38 participants completed the Teacher Presurvey, followed by an online instructional intervention, which was proven effective in showing teachers how to use Facebook and Twitter for parent–teacher communication, through Teacher Postsurvey data. Data from the Teacher Presurvey and Postsurvey were used to examine three research questions. In the study, the researcher also investigated teacher perceptions of the benefits of using social media, and solicited what they perceived to be …

Carrie Mae Weems And The Construction Of Visual Text, W Michael Mosby Dec 2016

Carrie Mae Weems And The Construction Of Visual Text, W Michael Mosby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Once photography's democratization of image started to take root in mid-1800's the evolution of the projected character of Emancipated African American became entwined with the visual, as well as the literary. My work examines MacArthur Fellow Carrie Mae Weems's series From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried as a contemporary literary text in direct dialogue with Frederick Douglass's ideas about photography's place in the regeneration of "self-image" for the new race of free African Americans. Weems's use of historical photographs originally intended to reinforce the same stereotypes Douglass hoped to defeat reclaims the individual in each image of …

This study aims to monitor indoor mold exposure and explore its relationship to respiratory symptoms/illnesses. Environmental monitoring was conducted in 15 homes (9 with visible mold and 6 without) in Shelby County. Indoor environmental samples included ground and air vent dust, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), real-time particulate matter (PM), CO2, relative humidity (RH), and temperature. In laboratory, mold in dust samples were analyzed using an Endpoint PCR and VOCs on a thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) system. No association was found …

Monotonic Testing Of Fully And Partially Anchored Wood-Shear Walls, Sean Michael Pezeshk Dec 2016

Monotonic Testing Of Fully And Partially Anchored Wood-Shear Walls, Sean Michael Pezeshk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Currently in the United States of America (USA), there are around 125 million single-family dwellings (SFDs), most of which consist of wood-frame construc-tion (SSA 2015). Traditionally wood frame construction SFDs have performed well in seismic events but more efficient designs against earthquake loads is de-sired. More than 143 million Americans are living in seismic regions and nearly 28 million live in high seismic regions (SSA 2015). During an earthquake event, the lateral forces created are characterized as cyclic and random. The main lateral force resisting system for these wood-frame SFDs is the shear wall, there-fore it is critical that the …

Effects Of 17 Β-Estradiol And Progesterone On Acropora Cervicornis And Porites Astreoides Growth And Reproduction, Joshua L. Stocker

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Reef-building coral populations throughout the world are being threatened by numerous stressors and continue to decline. As potent endocrine-disrupting compounds, exogenous sex steroid contamination has been a largely overlooked stressor to corals. Previous research indicates these compounds are prevalent in marine environments, fluctuate annually along with reproductive cycles, can bioaccumulate, and have had variable effects on growth and reproduction in several cnidarian species. This project had three primary objectives: (1) establish environmental estradiol and progesterone concentrations in Broward County and lower Florida Keys reef environments, (2) conduct 17 β-estradiol and progesterone larval assays on P. astreoides larvae to determine the …

Invasive Species Impacts On Infrastructure, Invasive Species Advisory Committee Dec 2016

Invasive Species Impacts On Infrastructure, Invasive Species Advisory Committee

National Invasive Species Council

Executive Summary

Invasive species represent one of the most significant threats to ecosystems, human and animal health, infrastructure, the economy, and cultural resources. Because potentially invasive, non-native species typically enter the United States through ports of entry in urban environments, some of the first observable impacts may be to infrastructure, yet little is known about the economic costs associated with these impacts to the “built” environment. In addition, federal agencies currently lack the authority necessary to effectively prevent, eradicate, and control invasive species that impact the human-built environment. This lack of authority prevents rapid response to some of the most …
