Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Results are presented of a search for heavy stable charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.5 fb-1 collected in 2015 with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The search is conducted using signatures of anomalously high energy deposits in the silicon tracker and long time-of-flight measurements by the muon system. The data are consistent with the expected background, and upper limits are set on the cross sections for production of long-lived gluinos, top squarks, tau sleptons, and leptonlike long-lived fermions. These upper limits are …

A Presentation Promoting Medical Laboratory Science, Emilia Meike

Honors Projects

Medical laboratory science is an important part of health care. There is currently a need for trained medical laboratory scientists. However, many students may not beware of the field or the requirements to become a medical laboratory scientist. This project was created to address this issue. The field of medical laboratory science was presented to a group of Bowling Green High School students. The presentation was designed to promote both the field of medical laboratory science and Bowling Green State University’s medical laboratory science program. The presentation consisted of a slideshow, brochure and activity. The project also includes a reflection …

Over Or Under: Hydride Attack At The Metal Versus The Coordinated Nitrosyl Ligand In Ferric Nitrosyl Porphyrins., E G. Abucayon, R L. Khade, D R. Powell, Michael J. Shaw, Y Yang, G B. Richter-Addo

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Hydride attack at a ferric heme–NO to give an Fe–HNO intermediate is a key step in the global N--‐cycle. We demonstrate differential reactivity when six--‐ and five--‐coordinate ferric heme--‐NO models react with hydride. Although Fe–HNO formation is thermodynamically favored from this reaction, Fe–H formation is kinetically favored for the 5C case.

The Health Conditions And The Health Care Consumption Of The Uninsured, Marco A. Castaneda, Meryem Saygili Dec 2016

The Health Conditions And The Health Care Consumption Of The Uninsured, Marco A. Castaneda, Meryem Saygili

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper investigates the difference in the health conditions and the health care consumption of uninsured individuals as compared to individuals with private insurance, using a nationally representative data set of inpatient hospital admissions from the US. In line with the previous literature, our results indicate that uninsured individuals are, on average, in worse health conditions. However, if we compare individuals within the same diagnosis category, the uninsured are actually healthier, with a lower number of chronic conditions and a lower risk of mortality. This indicates that the uninsured are admitted to the hospital only for more serious conditions. In …

Friends With Benefits: Redefining Personal Gain In Insider Trading Under Salman V. United States, Wendy R. Becker Dec 2016

Friends With Benefits: Redefining Personal Gain In Insider Trading Under Salman V. United States, Wendy R. Becker

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

Since Congress has not enacted a statute outlawing insider trading, or the trading of securities based on non-public information, outright, courts have struggled to define what constitutes insider trading. The Supreme Court held that a fiduciary duty was breached when the insider privy to the information receives a “personal benefit.” This Commentary analyzes a pending Supreme Court case, Salman v. United States, which addresses whether pecuniary gain is needed to constitute the personal benefit necessary for insider trading, or if certain relationships are enough for the tip to inherently create a personal benefit for the insider. The author argues …

Confirm Judge Koh For The Ninth Circuit, Carl Tobias Dec 2016

Confirm Judge Koh For The Ninth Circuit, Carl Tobias

Washington and Lee Law Review Online

On February 25, 2016, President Barack Obama appointed United States District Court Judge Lucy Haeran Koh for a judicial emergency vacancy on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The jurist has served professionally for more than six years in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, ably resolving major litigation. Thus, White House efforts to confirm her were unsurprising. Nevertheless, 2016 is a presidential election year when delay infuses many court appointments. That conundrum was exacerbated because the United States Senate Republican majority refused to even consider United States Court of Appeals …

Abstract: Technological advancement has resulted in the increasing use of e-learning and online education, initially in high-income countries and increasingly in low- and middle-income countries.

Background: In 2010, the Geneva Foundation for Medical Education and Research, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and partner institutions, developed an online postgraduate course “From Research to Practice: Training Course in Sexual and Reproductive Health Research”. This course takes advantage of the advancing Internet technology to provide training opportunities to health professionals mostly from low- and middle-income countries whose access to quality education is constrained by time, financial resources, or both.

An Examination Of The Neural Unreliability Thesis Of Autism, John Butler, Sophie Molholm, Gizely Andrade, John J. Foxe Dec 2016

An Examination Of The Neural Unreliability Thesis Of Autism, John Butler, Sophie Molholm, Gizely Andrade, John J. Foxe

Articles

An emerging neuropathological theory of Autism, referred to here as “the neural unreliability thesis,” proposes greater variability in moment-to-moment cortical representation of environmental events, such that the system shows general instability in its impulse response function. Leading evidence for this thesis derives from functional neuroimaging, a methodology ill-suited for detailed assessment of sensory transmission dynamics occurring at the millisecond scale. Electrophysiological assessments of this thesis, however, are sparse and unconvincing. We conducted detailed examination of visual and somatosensory evoked activity using high-density electrical mapping in individuals with autism (N = 20) and precisely matched neurotypical controls (N = 20), recording …

Linear Feedback Stabilization For A Continuously Monitored Qubit, Taylor Lee Patti, A. Chantasri, Justin Dressel, A. N. Jordan Dec 2016

Linear Feedback Stabilization For A Continuously Monitored Qubit, Taylor Lee Patti, A. Chantasri, Justin Dressel, A. N. Jordan

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

In quantum mechanics, standard or strong measurement approaches generally result in the collapse of an ensemble of wavefunctions into a stochastic mixture of eigenstates. On the other hand, continuous or weak measurements have the propensity to dynamically control the evolution of quantum states over time, guiding the trajectory of the state into non-trivial superpositions and maintaining state purity. This kind of measurement-induced state steering is of great theoretical and experimental interest for the harnessing of quantum bits or "qubits", which are the fundamental unit of the emerging quantum computer. We explore continuous measurement-based quantum state stabilization through linear feedback control …

“A Flower Which Blossoms And Fades”: Depictions Of Tuberculosis In 19th-Century Opera, Daniel Goldberg Dec 2016

“A Flower Which Blossoms And Fades”: Depictions Of Tuberculosis In 19th-Century Opera, Daniel Goldberg

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The romantic period in art and music is a time that focused on the regular person and had a fascination with nature, emotion, and death. One of the most common themes used was disease. One of the more common diseases of the time in both opera and real life was tuberculosis. In opera tuberculosis is always brought upon the same type of person time and time again and is always shown both by the character, and also though a series of metaphors. This character is always a woman and these “tubercular heroines” always are young, beautiful, frail people who need …
