The Impact Of Projected Climate Change On Bioswales In North Texas, Joann Paris Leavell Dec 2016

The Impact Of Projected Climate Change On Bioswales In North Texas, Joann Paris Leavell

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

This research addresses how bioswales are affected by the projections for climate change in the North Texas region. Bioswales are a type of green infrastructure that conveys stormwater before directing it to a storm sewer system or other flood control structure (McLaughlin, 2016). They minimize the volume of stormwater runoff from the ground level and allow for the infiltration and remediation of pollutants while reducing the amount of water that is directed towards storm sewers. The research seeks to provide an understanding of how the efficacy of bioswales is related to the projected climatic conditions in North Texas and their …

Coral Recovery On Phase-Shifted Reefs Depend Upon The Type Of Macroalgae Present, Justin N. Voss Dec 2016

Coral Recovery On Phase-Shifted Reefs Depend Upon The Type Of Macroalgae Present, Justin N. Voss

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The Florida Keys experienced some of the most drastic transitions from coral to macroalgae dominated states, known as phase-or regime-shifts, of any reefs in the Caribbean. Macroalgae on coral reefs lower coral recruitment by deterring coral settlement either directly through competition or indirectly by changing the chemical environment near the benthos. With evidence of species-specific interactions to coral-macroalgae competition, the type of macroalgae on a phase-shifted coral reef might be more important than just identifying a reef transition. To answer this question, I tested the effect of Laurencia intricata (a macroalgae related to the settlement inducing crustose coralline algae) and …

Does Community Size Affect Resident Satisfaction? Data From The Nebraska Rural Poll, Randolph L. Cantrell Dec 2016

Does Community Size Affect Resident Satisfaction? Data From The Nebraska Rural Poll, Randolph L. Cantrell

Cornhusker Economics

The Nebraska Rural Poll is a mailed sample survey of non-Metropolitan Nebraska Households that is now entering its 22nd year. In that regard, it is the largest and longest running thing of its kind in the nation. The survey has now reached over 56,000 respondents.

Within the collected Rural Poll data are a number of variables that have been measured every year since 1996. The bulk of these variables are measured on five-point Likert type scales questioning the extent to which respondents are “Satisfied” with various aspects of their lives and their communities. In this context, we define satisfaction …

Optimal Timing Of Free Flap Breast Reconstruction In A Highly Radiated Population, W. Mohiuddin, Kamini D. Patel, Steven E. Copit, Md, Patrick J. Greaney, Md, Facs

Department of Surgery Posters

Introduction

There has been an increasing use of postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) in breast cancer patients, especially in cases of large tumors (T3 or greater) or node-positive disease (N1 or greater).1 When radiation for the treatment of breast cancer is expected, tissue-based breast reconstruction is generally preferred to implant-based reconstruction. This distinction is attributed to the high rate of complications with postoperative radiation after implant-based reconstruction, ranging from 20% to 70%.2

In cases when the need for radiation is likely, breast reconstruction with autologous tissue is typically deferred until the completion of the radiation therapy. Reasons for deferring include avoiding …

Early-Transition Output Decline Revisited, Črt Kostevc, Sašo Polanec Dec 2016

Early-Transition Output Decline Revisited, Črt Kostevc, Sašo Polanec

Economic and Business Review

In this paper we revisit the issue of aggregate output decline that took place in the early transition period. We propose an alternative explanation of output decline that is applicable to Central- and Eastern-European countries. In the first part of the paper we develop a simple dynamic general equilibrium model that builds on work by Gomulka and Lane (2001). In particular, we consider price liberalization, interpreted as elimination of distortionary taxation, as a trigger of the output decline. We show that price liberalization in interaction with heterogeneous adjustment costs and non-employment benefits lead to aggregate output decline and surge in …

Exploratory Innovation, Exploitative Innovation And Innovation Performance: The Moderating Role Of Alliance Portfolio Partner Diversity, Mladenka Popadić, Danijel Pučko, Matej Černe Dec 2016

Exploratory Innovation, Exploitative Innovation And Innovation Performance: The Moderating Role Of Alliance Portfolio Partner Diversity, Mladenka Popadić, Danijel Pučko, Matej Černe

Economic and Business Review

Addressing the mixed findings in the literature, we distinguish between two distinct types of innovations, exploitative and exploratory innovations, and study their relationships with innovation performance. Organizational ambidexterity, the ability of a firm to simultaneously pursue both explorative and exploitative innovations, has been highlighted as increasingly important for the sustained competitive advantage of firms. By using the Community Innovation Survey 2006 micro data for innovation from twelve countries, we showed that simultaneously pursuing exploratory and exploitative innovation hinders firms’ innovation performance. Furthermore, we proposed that firms’ collaborations with different types of partners (suppliers, customers, competitors, research institutions and universities) would …

Optimal Inventory Control With Advance Supply Information, Marko Jakšič, Matej Marinč Dec 2016

Optimal Inventory Control With Advance Supply Information, Marko Jakšič, Matej Marinč

Economic and Business Review

It has been shown in numerous situations that sharing information between the companies leads to improved performance of the supply chain. We study a positive lead time periodic-review inventory system of a retailer facing stochastic demand from his customer and stochastic limited supply capacity of the manufacturer supplying the products to him. The consequence of stochastic supply capacity is that the orders might not be delivered in full, and the exact size of the replenishment might not be known to the retailer. The manufacturer is willing to share the so-called advance supply information (ASI) about the actual replenishment of the …

Interaction Between Total Cost And Fill Rate: A Case Study, Liljana Ferbar Tratar Dec 2016

Interaction Between Total Cost And Fill Rate: A Case Study, Liljana Ferbar Tratar

Economic and Business Review

Forecasting plays a central role in the efficient operation of a supply chain – i.e., the total costs and fill rate. As forecasts of demand are required on a regular basis for a very large number of products, the methods developed should be fast, flexible, user-friendly, and able to produce results that are reliable and easy to interpret by a manager. In this paper we show that the supply chain costs cannot be optimal if the forecasting method is treated separately from the inventory model. We analyse the performance of the joint optimization of the modified Holt-Winters forecasting method and …

It's Time To Take Housing Finance Reform Through The 21st Century, David J. Reiss Dec 2016

It's Time To Take Housing Finance Reform Through The 21st Century, David J. Reiss

Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two mortgage giants under the control of the federal government, have more than 45 percent of the share of the $10 trillion of mortgage debt outstanding. Ginnie Mae, a government agency that securitizes Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and Veterans Affairs (VA) mortgages, has another 16 percent.

These three entities together have a 98 percent share of the market for new residential mortgage-backed securities. This government domination of the mortgage market is not tenable and is, in fact, dangerous to the long-term health of the housing market, not to mention the federal budget.

No one …

Recurring Patterns Among Scrambled Genes In The Encrypted Genome Of The Ciliate Oxytricha Trifallax, Jonathan Burns, Denys Kukushkin, Xiao Chen, Laura F Landweber, Masahico Saito, Nataša Jonoska Dec 2016

Recurring Patterns Among Scrambled Genes In The Encrypted Genome Of The Ciliate Oxytricha Trifallax, Jonathan Burns, Denys Kukushkin, Xiao Chen, Laura F Landweber, Masahico Saito, Nataša Jonoska

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Some genera of ciliates, such as Oxytricha and Stylonychia, undergo massive genome reorganization during development and provide model organisms to study DNA rearrangement. A common feature of these ciliates is the presence of two types of nuclei: a germline micronucleus and a transcriptionally-active somatic macronucleus containing over 16,000 gene sized "nano-chromosomes". During conjugation the old parental macronucleus disintegrates and a new macronucleus forms from a copy of the zygotic micronucleus. During this process, macronuclear chromosomes assemble through DNA processing events that delete 90-98% of the DNA content of the micronucleus. This includes the deletion of noncoding DNA segments that interrupt …

A Trip To The Cataclysmic Binary Zoo: Detailed Follow-Up Of 35 Recently Discovered Systems, John R. Thorstensen, Erek H. Alper, Kathryn E. Weil Dec 2016

A Trip To The Cataclysmic Binary Zoo: Detailed Follow-Up Of 35 Recently Discovered Systems, John R. Thorstensen, Erek H. Alper, Kathryn E. Weil

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report follow-up studies of 35 recently discovered cataclysmic variables (CVs), 32 of which were found in large, automated synoptic sky surveys. The objects were selected for observational tractability. For 34 of the objects, we present mean spectra and spectroscopic orbital periods, and for one more we give an eclipse-based period. Thirty-two of the period determinations are new, and three of these refine published estimates based on superhump periods. The remaining three of our determinations confirm previously published periods. Twenty of the stars are confirmed or suspected dwarf novae with periods shorter than 3 hr, but we also find three …
