Population Demographics And Sexual Reproduction Potential Of The Pillar Coral, Dendrogyra Cylindrus, On The Florida Reef Tract, Lystina Kabay
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The pillar coral, Dendrogyra cylindrus, has been commonly described as widely distributed, but rare throughout its geographical range in the Caribbean. Having recently been listed as Threatened under the US Endangered Species Act, an understanding of population status is needed to promote species conservation and population recovery. Previous to this study the status of the pillar coral population in the state waters of Florida, U.S.A, was relatively unknown primarily due to few colonies being recorded and no comprehensive summary of population abundance, distribution or health being completed. Along with various environmental and anthropogenic factors affecting the pillar coral population …

Luke Powell (’18) studied German for three semesters at Gardner-Webb University before testing his communication skills during a spring break study abroad trip to Germany. “Being dropped in the country and forced to speak the language was beyond beneficial—these are experiences that you can’t obtain in the classroom,” Powell (’18) reflected. “The best part was seeing so much history, being in the heart of where the Cold War took place, Berlin, and seeing castles, palaces, museums and remnants of the wall. A close second was knowing that I was across the ocean from my home, where I had never left …

Can They Use It? Studying The Usability Of The Canvas Learning Management System At Bowling Green State University, James Faisant
Honors Projects
Students’ use of the Canvas learning management system (LMS) as implemented by Bowling Green State University (BGSU) is a substantial part of their learning experience. A well designed and easy to use LMS not only allows students to be more efficient, it allows students to engage effectively with their coursework. Students’ ability to effectively use the LMS is examined to understand whether the system is usable, and if not, what changes should be made. Research included two distinct elements. First, students were asked to complete nine tasks identified as common tasks within Canvas, while being timed. Additionally, students responded to …

Encouraging Professional Competency Development Of Higher Education Administration Graduate Students Through Supervised Student Affairs Practice, Andrew S. Tinnin
Encouraging Professional Competency Development Of Higher Education Administration Graduate Students Through Supervised Student Affairs Practice, Andrew S. Tinnin
Theses and Dissertations
Professional preparation and socialization of student affairs educators and their competency development is increasingly important in today's higher education environment (ACPA & NASPA, 2015; Janosik, Creamer, Hirt, Winston, Saunders, & Cooper, 2003; Schuh, Jones, & Harper, 2010). This professional preparation often occurs during graduate programs in higher education administration, and features a supervised practice component (CAS, 2012; Janosik, Cooper, Sauders, & Hirt, 2015). The purpose of this grounded theory study is to explore the process of competency development of higher education administration graduate students as part of their professional socialization into the student affairs profession. The intent of the study …

BACKGROUND: Viruses strongly influence microbial population dynamics and ecosystem functions. However, our ability to quantitatively evaluate those viral impacts is limited to the few cultivated viruses and double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) viral genomes captured in quantitative viral metagenomes (viromes). This leaves the ecology of non-dsDNA viruses nearly unknown, including single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) viruses that have been frequently observed in viromes, but not quantified due to amplification biases in sequencing library preparations (Multiple Displacement Amplification, Linker Amplification or Tagmentation).
METHODS: Here we designed mock viral communities including both ssDNA and dsDNA viruses to evaluate the capability of a sequencing library preparation …

Pharmacotherapeutic Considerations For Individuals With Down Syndrome, Erik Hefti
Pharmacotherapeutic Considerations For Individuals With Down Syndrome, Erik Hefti
Harrisburg University Faculty Works
Down syndrome (DS; trisomy 21) is the most common survivable disorder due to aneuploidy. Individuals with DS may experience multiple comorbid health problems including congenital heart defects, endocrine abnormalities, skin and dental problems, seizure disorders, leukemia, dementia, and obesity. These associated conditions may necessitate pharmacotherapeutic management with various drugs. The complex pathobiology of DS may alter drug disposition and drug response in some individuals. For example, reports have documented increased rates of adverse drug reactions in patients with DS treated for leukemia and dementia. Intellectual disability resulting from DS may impact adherence to medication regimens. In this review, we highlight …

Local Field Effects On Magnetic Suppression Of The Converging Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability, Vincent Wheatley, Wouter Mostert, D. M. Bond, Ravi Samtaney
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We examine how the suppression of the converging shockdriven Richtmyer-Meshkov instability by an applied magnetic field is dependent on the local magnetic field strength and orientation. In particular, we examine whether the extent of suppression can be reasonably predicted by a linear model for the planar case. This is done for cylindrically converging cases with a high perturbation wavenumber and two different initial magnetic field configurations.

The Theoretical Application And Comparison Of The Olfactory Sensory Organs In Swine Vs Canines For Accelerant And Explosives Detection, Naomi M. Sigler
The Theoretical Application And Comparison Of The Olfactory Sensory Organs In Swine Vs Canines For Accelerant And Explosives Detection, Naomi M. Sigler
Honors Theses
Swine may be able to work alongside scent detection canines, or replace them completely, in the scent detection field. Miniature pigs are the focus of this study since their larger counterparts can cause damage to potential evidence and to the scene itself. Ignitable Liquid Residues (ILRs) are searched for in post-fire conditions, and unconsumed explosives are searched for in major transportation hubs. Swine have more functional olfactory genes and less pseudogenes than humans, canines, and mice. Swine also have a highly functioning and exceedingly organized olfactory system. Swine are social creatures, which allows them to bond with a distinct handler. …

The KWS-2 SANS diffractometer is dedicated to the investigation of soft matter and biophysical systems covering a wide length scale, from nm to µm. The instrument is optimized for the exploration of the wide momentum transfer Q range between 1x10-4 and 0.5 Å-1 by combining classical pinhole, focusing (with lenses), and time-of-flight (with chopper) methods, while simultaneously providing high-neutron intensities with an adjustable resolution. Because of its ability to adjust the intensity and the resolution within wide limits during the experiment, combined with the possibility to equip specific sample environments and ancillary …
Differences In Amphetamine/Dextroamphetamine Prescriptions In Areas With & Without Large Universities, Heather Bacon
Differences In Amphetamine/Dextroamphetamine Prescriptions In Areas With & Without Large Universities, Heather Bacon
Honors Theses
This investigative study is examining trends in stimulant prescribing for several Michigan counties. An ex-post facto design was used to determine trends in the amount of amphetamine/dextroamphetamine dispensed in four Michigan counties containing large universities and two Michigan counties not containing large universities over the years 2007-2012. The study found suggestive evidence that there is an increasing trend of amphetamine/dextroamphetamine prescriptions filled in both counties with and without large universities. Suggestive evidence was also found that counties with large universities display a greater average amount of amphetamine/dextroamphetamine dispensed than counties without large universities for the years 2007-2012. Because the study …

Lauren Embry (’18) of Rock Hill, S.C., came to the Physician Assistant Studies program at Gardner-Webb University after graduating with her bachelor’s degree from a large university, where she felt like a face in the crowd. “I have truly valued the class size at GWU and the availability to get to know my teachers,” she reflected. “Having smaller classes allows the teachers to know your name and also different aspects about your life that don’t happen at larger universities. I have truly valued the friendships that I have made with both classmates and teachers.”
