Investigating The Antigen Removal Process Of Porcine Cartilage In Preparation Of Creating An Osteochondral Xenograft, Bradley Jeffery Kindred
Investigating The Antigen Removal Process Of Porcine Cartilage In Preparation Of Creating An Osteochondral Xenograft, Bradley Jeffery Kindred
Theses and Dissertations
With Athletes and individuals developing osteoarthritis and chondral defects at younger ages, long term treatments are in high demand. Total knee replacements only last for 10-15 years, so younger individuals would need to have multiple knee replacements within their lifetime. Allograft transplantation has shown to last long term and have high success rates, but the lack of donors and the possibility of damaging other areas of the knee to obtain tissue grafts has become a large concern. Xenografts derived from porcine cartilage is cost effective and the supply is abundant. Two antigen removal processes were examined: a short term antigen …
Patient Falls: Reducing Patient Falls With Injury, Frederick Comer
Patient Falls: Reducing Patient Falls With Injury, Frederick Comer
Master's Projects
The occurrence of patient falls is a very important health concern facing the healthcare industry. Many patients not only experience falls, but have falls with an injury. This is a patient safety concern that can have serious effects on patient outcomes, is a leading cause of patient injuries in hospitals, and are costly adverse events (Trepanier & Hilsenbeck, 2014). It is important that healthcare professionals determine ways to prevent what has been deemed a preventable event (Bemis-Dougherty & Delaune, 2008). In 2005 The Joint Commission (TJC) included patient falls with injury as part of their National Patient Safety Goals (Bemis-Dougherty …
Evidence Based Protocol: Discharge Delays In The Acute Care Setting, Kylie C. Schaberg
Evidence Based Protocol: Discharge Delays In The Acute Care Setting, Kylie C. Schaberg
Master's Projects
According to Batalden, Nelson, Godfrey and Lazar (2011, p, 25), the clinical microsystem is a “place where patients, families and health caregivers meet” and encompasses all interactions from the moment a patient enters the system up to and including when the patient leaves the system. In order to understand the complex and dynamic changes that occur at the microsystem level, a thorough assessment must be completed. The purpose of this chapter is to gain a greater understanding of the mechanism of the microsystem and the effects that this microsystem has on the process for discharging patients from the hospital setting …

Subphonemic Sensitivity In Low Literacy Adults, Monica Y.C. Li
Subphonemic Sensitivity In Low Literacy Adults, Monica Y.C. Li
Master's Theses
The link between phonological abilities and reading skills has been well-established in both typical and atypical language development. However, the nature of the phonological deficits in poor readers remains a debated topic. While poor readers have been mostly assumed to have underspecified or “fuzzy” phonological representations (Tallal et al., 1998), the opposite alternative, over-specified phonological representations, has also been hypothesized (Serniclaes, 2006). To examine the two phonological hypotheses, the current study used the eye-tracking paradigm in the study of Dahan et al. (2001) to investigate individuals’ sensitivity to subphonemic information in young adults with a wide range of reading abilities. …

Data Logging System For A Synthetic Aperture Radar Unit, Nicholas J. Testin, Philip Davis, Ian Dorell, Alexander Gillespie
Data Logging System For A Synthetic Aperture Radar Unit, Nicholas J. Testin, Philip Davis, Ian Dorell, Alexander Gillespie
KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses
A small, existing radar unit lacked the ability to automatically store the data it was receiving, which made its use clunky and cumbersome. A system was constructed to allow an on-board microprocessor to track distance traveled, and automatically store the data output from the radar unit to a portable memory unit for later data processing. Distance traveled is determined using a specially designed mobile cart, which electronically converts the rotation of a wheel into an electrical signal while also providing stability for taking accurate radar measurements. The output data from the radar unit is stored as a properly-formatted sound file …
Technical Debt Decision-Making Framework, Zadia Codabux
Technical Debt Decision-Making Framework, Zadia Codabux
Theses and Dissertations
Software development companies strive to produce high-quality software. In commercial software development environments, due to resource and time constraints, software is often developed hastily which gives rise to technical debt. Technical debt refers to the consequences of taking shortcuts when developing software. These consequences include making the system difficult to maintain and defect prone. Technical debt can have financial consequences and impede feature enhancements. Identifying technical debt and deciding which debt to address is challenging given resource constraints. Project managers must decide which debt has the highest priority and is most critical to the project. This decision-making process is not …

Design And Frequency Characterization Of Dual-Piezoresponsive Foam Sensors, Cory Nelson Newton
Design And Frequency Characterization Of Dual-Piezoresponsive Foam Sensors, Cory Nelson Newton
Theses and Dissertations
Multifunctional "self-sensing" materials at the frontiers of current research are generally designed to gather only a single type of information (such as quasi-static strain data). This project introduces a new sensor that is both multifunctional and dual-response, indicating its ability to not only perform in mechanical and sensing functions but also in its ability to sense multiple types of response. The proposed new class of sensing materials, comprised of nanocomposite polymer foams, exhibits measurable piezoresistive and quasi-piezoelectric phenomena in the form of change in resistance and voltage generation in response to deformation, respectively. An initial sampling of the envelope of …
Biopolarity: Coral Scientists Between Hope And Despair, Irus Braverman
Biopolarity: Coral Scientists Between Hope And Despair, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
Biopolarity draws on extensive interviews with dozens of coral scientists and on my observations of the international coral reef symposium in Hawaii on June 2016 to document the oscillation of coral scientists between hope and despair in their imaginations of coral futures. At one extreme of the oscillation are catastrophic predictions of the death of corals by the mid-21st century. In this despondent narrative, corals are getting fried and nothing short of an abrupt (and unlikely) shift in how humans use fossil fuels will save them. The pessimistic trajectory of this swing of the pendulum comes replete with daunting maps, …
Radiometrically Accurate Thermal Vehicle Targets For Synthetic Video Development, David B. Rhodes
Radiometrically Accurate Thermal Vehicle Targets For Synthetic Video Development, David B. Rhodes
Theses
Collecting large scientific quality thermal infrared image and video data sets is an expensive time consuming endeavor. Thermal infrared imagers cost much more than comparable visible systems and require skilled experienced operators. Also, time and experienced personnel are required to collect quality ground truth. Often it is advantageous to perform computer simulations as an alternative to collecting image and video data with real camera systems. As long as enough physics is incorporated into the models to give accurately comparable results to real imagery, simulated data can be used interchangeably. Generating synthetic images and video has the added benefit of being …
Asset Protection In Escorting Using Multi-Robot Systems, Stephen Powers
Asset Protection In Escorting Using Multi-Robot Systems, Stephen Powers
Theses
Swarm robotics is a field dedicated to the study of the design and development of certain multi-robot systems. Often times, these groups prove to be more beneficial than a single complex robot as swarms typically provide a more robust and potentially more efficient solution. One such case is the task of escorting a specified target while addressing any potential threats discovered in the environment. In this work, a control algorithm for a high volume, decentralized, homogeneous robot swarm was developed based upon a technique commonly used to model incompressible fluids known as Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH).
This proposed solution to …

A Comparative Study Of Three Approaches For Enhancing Teaching Knowledge Of Dyslexia, Kayla Steltenkamp
A Comparative Study Of Three Approaches For Enhancing Teaching Knowledge Of Dyslexia, Kayla Steltenkamp
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Teachers are the foundational component of the education system. Annually, they are required to engage in professional development opportunities to expand their knowledge. Since 1985 there has been a profusion of legislative attention to the reading disability dyslexia. Included in legislation is the mandate for teacher training, but there is a lack of research on effective professional development to increase teacher knowledge of dyslexia. This study compared three models of professional development to assess their efficacy in increasing declarative knowledge of dyslexia for elementary general education teachers. The results indicated that the use of simulation training alone was less effective …

Three-Dimensional Modeling Of Pennsylvanian Sandstone Units In The Mature Dudley Oil Field, Illinois, Usa, Jordan M. Martin, David H. Malone
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
The purpose of this research is to better understand the Dudley Pool, a small, mature oil field in the Illinois Basin, USA by incorporating old geologic and geophysical data into modern petrophysical modeling software. The research focused on three-dimensional subsurface modeling of stratigraphy, structure, and porosity, to establish a more thorough understanding of oil occurrence at the Dudley Pool. This research also discusses the efficacy of three-dimensional modeling as an effective tool for evaluating, and potentially modifying, production efforts in mature petroleum fields with limited and/or poor-quality data. The modeling and calculations were completed using Petrel. Well information from all …

Patchiness Of Ciliate Communities Sampled At Varying Spatial Scales Along The New England Shelf, Jean-David Grattepanche, George B. Mcmanus, Laura A. Katz
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Although protists (microbial eukaryotes) provide an important link between bacteria and Metazoa in food webs, we do not yet have a clear understanding of the spatial scales on which protist diversity varies. Here, we use a combination of DNA fingerprinting (denaturant gradient gel electrophoresis or DGGE) and high-throughput sequencing (HTS) to assess the ciliate community in the class Spirotrichea at varying scales of 1–3 km sampled in three locations separated by at least 25 km—offshore, midshelf and inshore—along the New England shelf. Analyses of both abundant community (DGGE) and the total community (HTS) members reveal that: 1) ciliate communities are …
The Effect Of Wee1 On Mitosis In The Spb Mutant, David Leroy
The Effect Of Wee1 On Mitosis In The Spb Mutant, David Leroy
Honors Theses
The speedbump mutant has been identified as an early arrest mutant, becoming apparent as soon as 80% epiboly (8.5 hours of development). This mutant has a mutation in wee1, which is a protein regulating entry into mitosis ensuring the completion of DNA replication before mitosis. The lack of this protein in speedbump allows for early entry into mitosis resulting in damage to the chromosome. Here, we investigate two questions: if mitosis in the speedbump mutant phenotype is more frequent than wild-type phenotype, and, if so, is there a phase in which the mutant phenotype favors. We used phosphorylated histone H3 …

Antigenic And Genetic Evolution Of Emerging Avian Origin Influenza A Viruses, Yifei Xu
Antigenic And Genetic Evolution Of Emerging Avian Origin Influenza A Viruses, Yifei Xu
Theses and Dissertations
Periodic introductions of influenza A viruses (IAVs) from wild birds contribute to emergence of novel strains that infect domestic poultry, lower mammals, and humans, but the mechanisms of emergence are unclear. The objectives of this dissertation research are to infer the genesis of two emerging IAVs, low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H10N8 and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H7N8 viruses, and to characterize the antigenic diversity and genetic evolution of contemporary H7 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) from North America. First, AIVs that are genetically close to the human H10N8 isolate were recovered at the live poultry market (LPM) visited by …
An Analysis Of The Relationship Between College Football Fans And Their Rival Teams, Morgan Young
An Analysis Of The Relationship Between College Football Fans And Their Rival Teams, Morgan Young
Theses and Dissertations
The current study explored how fan identification and negative rival perception affect the decision to blast or support the rival in indirect competition in college football. 258 participants (M age=24.15, 51.16% female) responded after being targeted via social media, email, and in person. Fans higher in identification had a more negative rival perception, were more likely to blast the rival, and were less likely to support the rival in indirect competition. A negative rival perception increased blasting and decreased rival support. The results contribute to current literature on rivalry and fan identification and aid marketers in marketing segmentation and targeting …

An Assessment Of The Effects Of Parental Incarceration On Intragenerational And Intergenerational Mobility, Timothy E. Mcclure
Theses and Dissertations
In the past 40 years, the U.S. has experienced its largest expansion of incarceration. Sociological research has begun to examine the effects the dramatics rises in incarceration in the United States on other areas of social life. One area of research has examined the effects of parental incarceration on children. In this study, I examined the effects of parental incarceration on intragenerational and intergenerational socioeconomic mobility using data from nationally-representative sample of respondents who had been studied from adolescence to young adulthood. Specifically, I examined the effects of parental incarceration prevalence and duration on three measures of socioeconomic status—household income, …
Copper Coordination With Protein, Peptides, And Small Molecules, Whitnee Leigh Nettles
Copper Coordination With Protein, Peptides, And Small Molecules, Whitnee Leigh Nettles
Theses and Dissertations
Copper is an essential element for all living organisms. However, due to its low redox potential it can be involved in the production of reactive oxygen species; where excess amounts of copper can be exceptionally toxic.1 In humans, malfunctions in copper metabolism are linked to diseases such as Menkes syndrome, Wilson’s disease, prion disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.2 Maintenance of copper homeostasis requires a number of proteins, such as copper transporters and chaperones to deliver copper to the correct protein while limiting free copper in the cell.3 Therefore, understanding the thermodynamics of copper(II) coordination in proteins is critical to our understanding …
Utilization Of Phosphate Alternatives In Chunked And Formed Deli Ham And Marinated Chicken Breast, Carlos Seth Morris
Utilization Of Phosphate Alternatives In Chunked And Formed Deli Ham And Marinated Chicken Breast, Carlos Seth Morris
Theses and Dissertations
Porcine Semimembranosus muscles were vacuum tumbled with phosphate, without phosphate, fiber dry vinegar, or whey protein concentrate (WPC). Consumers preferred (P<0.05) deli ham with phosphate, without phosphate and WPC over the oat fiber with vinegar treatment. In addition, the phosphate treatment had less cooking loss, (P<0.05) greater bind strength (P<0.05) and more intact slices (P<0.05) than other treatments. In addition, WPC produced ham with a higher (P<0.05) CIE l* and a lower (P<0.05) b* value than other treatments. Consumers preferred (P<0.05) chicken breasts marinated with phosphate with respect to flavor and aroma over the negative phosphate treatment and oat fiber treatments. Chicken breast with phosphate increased pH and had less cooking loss (P<0.05) as compared to chicken with WPC and without phosphate. Results indicated that oat fiber has potential as a phosphate replacer in marinated chicken, and WPC has potential as a phosphate replacer in deli ham.

The Arctic freshwater cycle is changing rapidly, which will require adequate monitoring of river flows to detect, observe, and understand changes and provide adaptation information. There has, however, been little detail about where the greatest flow changes are projected, and where monitoring therefore may need to be strengthened. In this study, we used a set of recent climate model runs and an advanced macro‐scale hydrological model to analyze how flows across the continental pan‐Arctic are projected to change and where the climate models agree on significant changes. We also developed a method to identify where monitoring stations should be placed …

EuroAmerican land-use and its legacies have transformed forest structure and composition across the United States (US). More accurate reconstructions of historical states are critical to understanding the processes governing past, current, and future forest dynamics. Here we present new gridded (8x8km) reconstructions of pre-settlement (1800s) forest composition and structure from the upper Midwestern US (Minnesota, Wisconsin, and most of Michigan), using 19th Century Public Land Survey System (PLSS), with estimates of relative composition, above-ground biomass, stem density, and basal area for 28 tree types. This mapping is more robust than past efforts, using spatially varying correction factors to accommodate sampling …
