Sensitivity Analysis And Parameter Estimation For The Apex Model On Runoff, Sediments And Phosphorus, Yi Jiang
Sensitivity Analysis And Parameter Estimation For The Apex Model On Runoff, Sediments And Phosphorus, Yi Jiang
Theses and Dissertations
Sensitivity analysis is essential for the hydrologic models to help gain insight into model’s behavior, and assess the model structure and conceptualization. Parameter estimation in the distributed hydrologic models is difficult due to the high-dimensional parameter spaces. Sensitivity analysis identified the influential and non-influential parameters in the modeling process, thus it will benefit the calibration process. This study identified, applied and evaluated two sensitivity analysis methods for the APEX model. The screening methods, the Morris method, and LH-OAT method, were implemented in the experimental site in North Carolina for modeling runoff, sediment loss, TP and DP losses. At the beginning …
Methodology Development For The Measurement And Analysis Of Sediment Oxygen Demands And Nutrient Releases, Luis Alfonso Laurens Vallejo
Methodology Development For The Measurement And Analysis Of Sediment Oxygen Demands And Nutrient Releases, Luis Alfonso Laurens Vallejo
Theses and Dissertations
Sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and nutrients releases from the bottom sediments of a water body are important parameters to be included in studies of water quality processes. Two methods to measure SOD, in situ and at laboratory, were applied at Eckie’s Pond on late spring of 2015. Based upon preliminary results, which showed greater values for the in situ method, some modifications of procedures and equipment were made to improve the measurements. Another set of measurements were made on June of 2016, however their results were not conclusive to establish a correlation between these methodologies. As a result of this …

A Detailed Look Into The Aerodynamic Forces Due To The Drag-Reducing Aerospike, Philip Douglas
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims to simulate previous wind tunnel experiments on the drag-reducing aerospike in order to help validate the accuracy of CFD analysis. Multiple grids were created with the Pointwise grid generation software. The CFD analysis software used was Ansys Fluent, with both planar and axisymmetric cases being tested for the primary rocket in order to compare the differences. The tests with the primary rocket followed how a spike of set length reacted at various speeds. Two additional experiments were duplicated. These helped confirm that the results obtained via Fluent were accurate. One case was a simple transonic spike model, …
Characterization Of Microparticles Through Digital Holography, Nava Raj Subedi
Characterization Of Microparticles Through Digital Holography, Nava Raj Subedi
Theses and Dissertations
In this work, digital holography (DH) is extensively utilized to characterize microparticles. Here, “characterization” refers to the determination of a particle’s shape, size, and, in some cases, its surface structure. A variety of microparticles, such as environmental dust, pollen, volcanic ash, clay, and biological samples, are thoroughly analyzed. In this technique, the microscopically fine interference pattern generated by the coherent superposition of an object and a reference wave fields is digitally recorded using an optoelectronic sensor, in the form of a hologram, and the desired particle property is then computationally extracted by performing a numerical reconstruction to form an image …
Strategies For Reduced Unburned Hydrocarbon And Carbon Monoxide Emissions In Diesel Propane Dual Fuel Low Temperature Combustion, Kyle Anthony Hodges
Strategies For Reduced Unburned Hydrocarbon And Carbon Monoxide Emissions In Diesel Propane Dual Fuel Low Temperature Combustion, Kyle Anthony Hodges
Theses and Dissertations
The present manuscript discusses the use of two diesel injections in diesel-ignited propane dual fuel Low Temperature Combustion (LTC). Using propane fumigation into the intake runners of a single cylinder research engine, the maximum and minimum percent energy substitution (PES) values were obtained to be 90% and 53%, respectively at 3.3 bar BMEP. An optimal PES value of 80% was used to explore the effects of a secondary injection on the engine-out emissions. The secondary injection proved to have a strong influence on combustion phasing (CA50). As combustion is phased closer to TDC the IFCE shows and increase of 4% …

Hayward Shepherd, a black railroad porter in Harper’s Ferry, was the first man killed in John Brown’s raid, an insurrection intended to free Shepherd’s own race from the grips of slavery. Many Democratic newspapers in both the North and South initially reported that Brown’s men shot Shepherd specifically because he refused to take up arms on the side of the abolitionists. Republican presses instead tended to use passive phrases when describing Shepherd’s death, suggesting that they did not want to report the fact that an anti-slavery group had killed a free black man. These moderate presses remained far less opinionated …
Optimization And Decision Making Under Uncertainty For Distributed Generation Technologies, Carlos Antonio Marino
Optimization And Decision Making Under Uncertainty For Distributed Generation Technologies, Carlos Antonio Marino
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation studies two important models in the field of the distributed generation technologies to provide resiliency to the electric power distribution system. In the first part of the dissertation, we study the impact of assessing a Combined Cooling Heating Power system (CCHP) on the optimization and management of an on-site energy system under stochastic settings. These mathematical models propose a scalable stochastic decision model for large-scale microgrid operation formulated as a two-stage stochastic linear programming model. The model is solved enhanced algorithm strategies for Benders decomposition are introduced to find an optimal solution for larger instances efficiently. Some observations …

The population of older adults will continuously increase over the coming decades. As they get older, people will require assistance and regular monitoring, with higher costs for welfare system and families. Two vital aspects of a healthy lifestyle, are domestic autonomy and maintenance of relationships within the neighborhood. This leads to an interesting research issue: “Could houses and appliances have the potential to improve autonomy and quality of life of citizens? Which methods and tools could enhance wellbeing and healthy conditions? The house has the potential to be a safe, adaptive environment, integrated with technologies for life support. This work …

Inhibitory Control Processes And The Strategies That Support Them During Hand And Eye Movements, Lauren M. Schmitt, Lisa D. Ankeny, John A. Sweeney, Matthew W. Mosconi
Psychology: Graduate Student Scholarship
Background and Aims: Adaptive behavior depends on the ability to voluntarily suppress context-inappropriate behaviors, a process referred to as response inhibition. Stop Signal tests (SSTs) are the most frequently studied paradigm used to assess response inhibition. Previous studies of SSTs have indicated that inhibitory control behavior can be explained using a common model in which GO and STOP processes are initiated independent from one and another, and the process that is completed first determines whether the behavior is elicited (GO process) or terminated (STOP process). Consistent with this model, studies have indicated that individuals strategically delay their behaviors during SSTs …

Purpose
Choroideremia is a progressive X-linked recessive dystrophy, characterized by degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), choroid, choriocapillaris, and photoreceptors. We examined photoreceptor structure in a series of subjects with choroideremia with particular attention to areas bordering atrophic lesions.
Methods
Twelve males with clinically-diagnosed choroideremia and confirmed hemizygous mutations in the CHM gene were examined. High-resolution images of the retina were obtained using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and both confocal and non-confocal split-detector adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) techniques.
Results
Eleven CHM gene mutations (3 novel) were identified; three subjects had the same mutation and one …

Hydraulic And Hydrologic Properties Of The Sabine River, Annie L. Bryant
Civil Engineering Theses
The Sabine River is located in Northeast Texas and is home to many threatened and endangered species as well as a growing human population. It is important to understand channel properties and flow characteristics of rivers in order better manage these important natural resources. The Sabine was monitored for hydraulic and hydrological properties as this is a poorly understood river at this point in time.
Hydraulic modeling was conducted to determine channel velocities and shear stresses during different storm frequencies. It was found that velocity and shear stress had a direct relationship at lower velocities. A comparison of existing Geographic …

Exploring Psychological Territoriality Through The Domestic Gothic In Beloved And Mama Day, Lori L. Cook
English Department Theses
The novels, Beloved, by Toni Morrison, and Mama Day, by Gloria Naylor, contain narratives of families with a history of slavery that explore how their female protagonists claim their identities within the new boundaries of freedom. Using a framework of the Domestic Gothic, this paper explores how formerly enslaved female characters claim new psychological territory in bounded domestic spaces by using the chores they were forced to perform during their times of slavery as a means to independence. Domestic duties such as cooking and gardening along with magical and religious ceremonies and acts of violence are passed down through the …
