Man Rump, Cynthia Washington

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Blignon looked up from his plate, his back rippling with disgust. "Eating companion, do you not enjoy the manfingers?" his long time friend, Zignon asked. Blignon burped politely from his armpit, "No, the Ancestors could not have been more mistaken about this meal, surely these are not manfingers!"

Optimal Supply Chain Configuration For The Additive Manufacturing Of Biomedical Implants, Adindu Ahurueze Emelogu Dec 2016

Optimal Supply Chain Configuration For The Additive Manufacturing Of Biomedical Implants, Adindu Ahurueze Emelogu

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we study two important problems related to additive manufacturing (AM). In the first part, we investigate the economic feasibility of using AM to fabricate biomedical implants at the sites of hospitals AM versus traditional manufacturing (TM). We propose a cost model to quantify the supply-chain level costs associated with the production of biomedical implants using AM technology, and formulate the problem as a two-stage stochastic programming model, which determines the number of AM facilities to be established and volume of product flow between manufacturing facilities and hospitals at a minimum cost. We use the sample average approximation …

Towards Autonomous Unmanned Vehicle Systems, Sheng Cai Dec 2016

Towards Autonomous Unmanned Vehicle Systems, Sheng Cai

Theses and Dissertations

As an emerging technology, autonomous Unmanned Vehicle Systems (UVS) have found not only many military applications, but also various civil applications. For example, Google, Amazon and Facebook are developing their UVS plans to explore new markets. However, there are still a lot of challenging problems which deter the UVS’s development. We study two important and challenging problems in this dissertation, i.e. localization and 3D reconstruction. Specifically, most GPS based localization systems are not very accurate and can have problems in areas where no GPS signals are available. Based on the Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) and Inertial Navigation System (INS), …

The Application Of Uncertainty Quantification (Uq) And Sensitivity Analysis (Sa) Methodologies To Engineering Models And Mechanical Experiments, Justin Matthew Hughes Dec 2016

The Application Of Uncertainty Quantification (Uq) And Sensitivity Analysis (Sa) Methodologies To Engineering Models And Mechanical Experiments, Justin Matthew Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the effects of uncertainty on modeling has seen an increased focus as engineering disciplines rely more heavily on computational modeling of complex physical processes to predict system performance and make informed engineering decisions. These computational methods often use simplified models and assumptions with models calibrated using uncertain, averaged experimental data. This commonplace method ignores the effects of uncertainty on the variation of modeling output. Qualitatively, uncertainty is the possibility of error existing from experiment to experiment, from model to model, or from experiment to model. Quantitatively, uncertainty quantification (UQ) methodologies seek to determine the how variable an engineering system …

Influence Of Cattle On Browsing And Grazing Wildlife Varies With Rainfall And Presence Of Megaherbivores, Duncan M. Kimuyu, Kari E. Veblen, Corinna Riginos, Robert M. Chira, John M. Githaiga, Truman P. Young

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

In many savanna ecosystems worldwide, livestock share the landscape and its resources with wildlife. The nature of interactions between livestock and wildlife is a subject of considerable interest and speculation, yet little controlled experimental research has been carried out. Since 1995, we have been manipulating the presence and absence of cattle and large mammalian herbivore wildlife in a Kenyan savanna in order to better understand how different herbivore guilds influence habitat use by specific wildlife species. Using dung counts as a relative assay of herbivore use of the different experimental plots, we found that cattle had a range of effects, …

Queering The Dick: Moby-Dick As Coming-Out Narrative, Ryan M. Brady Dec 2016

Queering The Dick: Moby-Dick As Coming-Out Narrative, Ryan M. Brady

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Many contemporary critics read Ishmael, Moby-Dick's loquacious narrator, as a queer character. The words homosexual and heterosexual would not be coined until 1868, some eighteen years after the events of Moby-Dick; thus, Ishmael comes of age in a time when there was no language to express or even acknowledge same-sex attraction, and even if there had been, the rigid societal codes that regulated sexuality in the nineteenth century would have prevented him from doing so. Despite these disadvantages, Ishmael, through his "marriage" to Queequeg and, later, his admittance into the queer haven of the Pequod, not only manages to reconcile …

Vortex Detection In Cfd Datasets Using A Multi-Model Ensemble Approach, Randa Bassou Dec 2016

Vortex Detection In Cfd Datasets Using A Multi-Model Ensemble Approach, Randa Bassou

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past few decades, visualization and application researchers have been investigating vortices and have developed several algorithms for detecting vortex-like structures in the flow. These techniques can adequately identify vortices in most computational datasets, each with its own degree of accuracy. However, despite these efforts, there still does not exist an entirely reliable vortex detection method that does not require significant user intervention. The objective of this research is to solve this problem by introducing a novel vortex analysis technique that provides more accurate results by optimizing the threshold for several computationally-efficient, local vortex detectors, before merging them using …

An Evaluation Of The Seagrass Habitat In North Biscayne Bay, Florida, In Relation To A Changing Environment And Urbanization In The Port Of Miami Harbor Basin 2005-2011, Sara M. Jarossy

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Seagrass habitats in South Florida are exceptionally valuable. They play an important ecological role in the coastal environment by stabilizing sediment, providing habitat for other species and supporting a whole food web. The availability of light and nutrients in aquatic ecosystems are the driving factors behind seagrass distribution. Water quality has been known to influence the abundance, distribution and composition of seagrass beds. South Florida has extensive diverse coastal communities. Throughout its human development dramatic changes have occurred in its natural ecosystems. In South Florida, many examples of seagrass habitat loss are documented, with a variety of contributing factors. The …

A Correlation Between Gpa And Physical Therapy Treatment Compliance, Courtney Griffith Dec 2016

A Correlation Between Gpa And Physical Therapy Treatment Compliance, Courtney Griffith

Honors Projects

This study sought to find a relationship between students’ university grade point average and physical therapy treatment compliance. While other researchers have shown how important compliance is and have investigated factors that affect compliance and GPA separately, no one has studied how GPA and physical therapy treatment compliance are related. We investigated how these two factors interacted and were influenced by other aspects in a population that had not received much attention in literature regarding treatment compliance. This study was a cross sectional survey that used a source population of undergraduate and graduate students at Bowling Green State University in …

The Rapture Of Being Alive: Mourning, Narrative, And Communicative Ritual In The Digital Age, Marjorie Merideth Drinan Dec 2016

The Rapture Of Being Alive: Mourning, Narrative, And Communicative Ritual In The Digital Age, Marjorie Merideth Drinan

Theses - ALL

Conversations have an afterlife. But what if the afterlife could have conversations? In that metaphorical space, the author explores how technology and design will engender new communicative rituals and tools of mourning as the semiotics of traditional gravescapes begin to diffuse. This pivot will occur in tandem with the rise of alternative forms of body disposition and growing environmental stewardship in response to increased urbanization and notions of intergenerational equity. Digital space, the postmodern hearth of an ever individualized and fractured society, will enable a plurality of mourning as the idea of legacy is deconstructed within the framework of transhumanism …

“Through My Eyes”, A New Narrative Model Using Memories As Self And Intergenerational Discovery, Rui Tang Dec 2016

“Through My Eyes”, A New Narrative Model Using Memories As Self And Intergenerational Discovery, Rui Tang

Theses - ALL

What keeps us happy and healthy as we go through life? According to psychiatrist Robert Waldinger, the director of a 75-year-old study on adult development, a good life isn’t about wealth or fame. Instead, effective social interactions keep us, especially older adults, happier and healthier. Narrative projects like the oral history and collective memory are widely employed to invite older adults to share their memories about historical significant events. Although there were modest benefits in reducing participants’ social isolation (Bornat 16), the approaches of these projects are limited to narrative analysis, rather than narrative itself. The tension between older adults’ …

Politics, Inclusion, And Social Practice, Ronjaunee Chatterjee, Amy Wong Dec 2016

Politics, Inclusion, And Social Practice, Ronjaunee Chatterjee, Amy Wong

English and Creative Writing | Faculty Scholarship

"In the wake of the American election, Elaine Hadley’s 'Closing Remarks' from v21’s b2o issue—that we are writing, living, and teaching in a 'critical moment, some might even say a survivalist moment' in which 'the power of positive psychology does not seem adequate to the times'—appear chilling in their urgency. Hadley cautions against a pleasure and optimism largely disengaged from feminist and class critiques, as well as from what she calls 'Politics with a big P.'"

Bats carry and shed many emerging infectious disease agents including Ebola virus and SARS-like Coronaviruses, yet they rarely display clinical symptoms of infection. Bat epithelial or fibroblast cell lines were previously established to study the bat immune response against viral infection. However, the lack of professional immune cells such as dendritic cells (DC) and macrophages has greatly limited the significance of current investigations. Using Pteropus alecto (P. alecto ) GM-CSF plus IL4, FLT3L and CSF-1, we successfully generated bat bone marrow-derived DC and macrophages. Cells with the phenotype, morphology and functional features of monocyte-derived DC, bona fide DC or macrophages …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Emotion is expressed in multiple modalities, yet most research has considered at most one or two. This stems in part from the lack of large, diverse, well-annotated, multimodal databases with which to develop and test algorithms. We present a well-annotated, multimodal, multidimensional spontaneous emotion corpus of 140 participants. Emotion inductions were highly varied. Data were acquired from a variety of sensors of the face that included high-resolution 3D dynamic imaging, high-resolution 2D video, and thermal (infrared) sensing, and contact physiological sensors that included electrical conductivity of the skin, respiration, blood pressure, and heart rate. Facial expression was annotated for both …

A Review Of Present And Alternative Lionfish Controls In The Western Atlantic, Adam Rittermann Dec 2016

A Review Of Present And Alternative Lionfish Controls In The Western Atlantic, Adam Rittermann

HCNSO Student Capstones

Lionfish (Pterois volitans and Pterois miles) are the first recorded invasive piscivore in the Caribbean and have become a threat to native species. As generalist consumers, lionfish have a broad diet and reduce prey and competitor abundance and juvenile recruitment. To confront this problem, this paper serves to review all of the current and alternative future controls available to manage lionfish populations in the Western Atlantic and determine where focus is lacking. Derby and cull efforts are the only management efforts in place and are not effective in their current state as these local events have short-term benefits, …

Using Gis To Predict Cetacean Strandings Related To Harmful Algal Blooms, Jessica L. Boyd Dec 2016

Using Gis To Predict Cetacean Strandings Related To Harmful Algal Blooms, Jessica L. Boyd

HCNSO Student Capstones

Exposure to harmful algal bloom (HAB) toxins, such as Karenia brevis, has been linked to cetacean strandings and mortalities. Biological and environmental data from a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) Unusual Mortality Event (UME) in 2004 are compared to those from pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) mass stranding events in 2013-2014 in western Florida. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) maps have been created by overlaying stranding locations and select K. brevis presence data in order to identify common spatial and temporal trends. Preliminary results indicate that elevated K. brevis levels (>10,000 cells/L) in Sarasota Bay during January-February and November may …

Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Modeling Of Induced Seismicity In Carbon Sequestration Projects, Kimia Mortezaei Dec 2016

Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Modeling Of Induced Seismicity In Carbon Sequestration Projects, Kimia Mortezaei

Theses and Dissertations

The ultimate goal of this project is to comprehensively investigate induced seismicity potential by studying the behavior of fault shear zones during high pressure CO2 injection for utilization and storage operations. Seismicity induced by fluid injection is one of the major concerns associated with recent energy technologies such as Carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. CO2 injection increases reservoir pore pressure and decreases the effective stress causing deformation that can degrade the storage integrity by creating new fractures and reactivating faults. The first consequence is that reactivation of faults and fractures create a pathway for upward CO2 migration. The increased …

Predictive Capabilities Of Advanced Turbulence Models In The Wake Region Of A Wall Mounted Cube, Benjamin Hugh Taylor Dec 2016

Predictive Capabilities Of Advanced Turbulence Models In The Wake Region Of A Wall Mounted Cube, Benjamin Hugh Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to investigate the predictive capabilities of Advanced turbulence models in the wake region of a wall-mounted cube. Dynamic Hybrid RANS/LES (DHRL), Hybrid RANS/LES (HRL) models, Nonlinear Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Model (NEARSM), One- and Two-equation models, and numerical flux schemes will be compared against Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) results to determine which model, or combination of models, produce the closest replication. The simulations were ran in Loci-Chem using both built-in features and modular code additions. The simulation results show the Shear Stress Transport (SST) model ran with NEARSM and Optimized Gradient REconstruction (OGRE) scheme gives better results …
