Ambivalent Subjects In Neoliberal Times: Non-Governmental Organizations And Binational Same Sex Couples In The United States, Jara M. Carrington
Ambivalent Subjects In Neoliberal Times: Non-Governmental Organizations And Binational Same Sex Couples In The United States, Jara M. Carrington
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation is a critical examination of the increasingly intimate relationship between the neoliberal state, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and their constituents through the lens of NGO-produced advocacy for “binational same sex couples” in the United States. I analyze how neoliberal political and economic ideologies are reconfiguring the role of NGOs, entities traditionally understood as outside state power, as well as the aspirations of their constituencies, within the United States. In particular, I interrogate how NGOs are an increasingly important site in the (re)production of normative gay and lesbian subjects, and illustrate how LGBTQ-identified individuals negotiate these conditions as they seek …

Video Modeling For Social Communication In Adults With Asd, Haley Ann Altman
Video Modeling For Social Communication In Adults With Asd, Haley Ann Altman
Honors Projects
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can experience significant difficulty and psychosocial toll as a result of their impairments in social communication. Specifically for adults, this can have a negative effect on relationships and vocational stability. However, there is a lack of effective intervention for adults with ASD to assist in learning these social conventions. Video modeling is an intervention that has potential to help these individuals learn to be successful in social problem-solving situations. A pilot feasibility study (Hewitt & Kelliher, n.d.) was conducted to investigate the intervention of video modeling for adults with ASD. Coding was then necessary …
Genomic Description And Annotation Of A New Colivirus; Kb1, Maggie Caswell
Genomic Description And Annotation Of A New Colivirus; Kb1, Maggie Caswell
Honors Projects
KB1 is a bacteriophage with relatively few established characteristics. However, it is thought to be similar to the novel environmental isolate bacteriophage, JK5. The aim of this study was to describe and annotate the genome of this new colivirus, relative to the genome of JK5. This comparison confirms the hypothesis that these are similar, but distinct viruses, and provides a foundation for the further understanding of both of these novel environmental isolates.

Heredity has always been, in one form or another, at the center of biological
research. There is little doubt that the first scientific experimentation took place
about fifteen thousand years ago, when humans started breeding plants and
animals in order to domesticate them. Today the science of genetics seems to
advance at such a pace that even the experts have trouble keeping up with all the
developments. Now we are witnessing the expansion of our understanding of this
realm of science to levels unimaginable just a few decades ago.

Time-Series Analysis Of Embodied Interaction: Movement Variability And Complexity Matching As Dyadic Properties, Leonardo Zapata-Fonseca, Dobromir Dotov, Ruben Fossion, Tom Froese
Journal Articles
There is a growing consensus that a fuller understanding of social cognition depends on more systematic studies of real-time social interaction. Such studies require methods that can deal with the complex dynamics taking place at multiple interdependent temporal and spatial scales, spanning sub-personal, personal, and dyadic levels of analysis. We demonstrate the value of adopting an extended multi-scale approach by re-analyzing movement time-series generated in a study of embodied dyadic interaction in a minimal virtual reality environment (a perceptual crossing experiment). Reduced movement variability revealed an interdependence between social awareness and social coordination that cannot be accounted for by either …

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications
The current work describes the formulation and evaluation of a phospholipid complex of kaempferol toenhance the latter’s aqueous solubility, in vitro dissolution rate, in vivo antioxidant and hepatoprotectiveactivities, and oral bioavailability. The kaempferol-phospholipid complex was synthesized using a freeze-drying method with the formulation being optimized using a full factorial design (32) approach. The resultsinclude the validation of the mathematical model in order to ascertain the role of specific formulation andprocess variables that contribute favorably to the formulation’s development. The final product wascharacterized and confirmed by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform InfraredSpectroscopy (FTIR), Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-NMR), and …

Let’S Tweet!: A Content Analysis Of Health Campaigns’ Usage Of Twitter, Chasiti Gaines
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Twitter, a popular social networking platform, offers unique opportunities for sharing and disseminating health-related information to the public. Health campaigns frequently use Twitter to raise awareness and encourage a healthy lifestyle among users. The present study aims to investigate health campaigns’ use of Twitter for promoting strategic health messages and public engagement. Through a content analysis of a sample of national health campaigns’ (Let’s Move!, The Heart Truth, Breast Cancer Awareness & Truth) tweets, the research identifies interactive features and message functions across campaign profiles. This study found that most health campaigns use Twitter as a one-way communication tool. This …
Teacher Sustainability Cultural Wealth Among Suburban Educators Of Color, Verna Wong
Teacher Sustainability Cultural Wealth Among Suburban Educators Of Color, Verna Wong
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The research question addressed in this project was, how do teachers of color sustain themselves in a profession that struggles to retain teachers? It utilized bell hooks’s feminist theory to look at the challenges and strengths of teachers through gender, race and class intersections. Because retention is a concern, especially among teachers of color, the ndings describe how teachers utilized cultural wealth to strengthen their capacity to stay in their profession. Tara Yosso (2005) denes cultural wealth as “an array of knowledge, skills, abilities, and contacts possessed and utilized by Communities of Color to survive and resist macro and micro …
The Connection Between Movement And Student Engagement In A Kindergarten Classroom, Catherine B. Lay
The Connection Between Movement And Student Engagement In A Kindergarten Classroom, Catherine B. Lay
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The research question addressed in this project was: How will regular movement opportunities impact student engagement in a kindergarten classroom? This capstone begins with the personal experiences and influences of the author that led her to this question. Research on the connection between the brain, movement, and development is explained. Programs and countries that integrate frequent movement opportunities into their school schedules are examined in chapter two. This action research project uses a mixed-methods approach to observe off-task behavior during an independent writing period in a kindergarten class. Two weeks of observation are followed by two weeks of movement intervention …

The Impacts Of An Experiential-Based Learning Opportunity, Allison Ronglien
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The question addressed by this research study was, “What are the impacts of an experiential-based learning opportunity?” Participants of the study were high school students enrolled in an elective summer field-experience course. Students completed a survey prior to the nine-day canoe trip in Lake of the Woods, Minnesota. This survey provided background information on the participants’ general interest in the environment, self-confidence, and ability to communicate effectively. Following the field-experience, students completed a similar survey. The data collected was analyzed using methods for a qualitative research study. The results indicated that after participating in a field-experience course students reported a …
