Plymouth Business School

Introduction The research for this paper was conducted over three years from 2003-2006. This paper describes the research methodology used to validate the research question using a case study approach. The first part discusses the various research paradigms around the methodology of phenomenology and the choice for the use of case studies based on interview data. Suicide In An Ageing Uk Population: Problems And Prevention, G Hodge Dec 2016

Suicide In An Ageing Uk Population: Problems And Prevention, G Hodge

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Purpose Suicide can be an emotive, and at times, controversial subject. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the social, health, personal, and cultural issues that can arise in later life and the potential reasons for suicide. It will analyse already recognised risk factors of suicide in older adults and focus on improving knowledge about the social meaning and causation of suicide for older people. It will also consider suicide prevention policies, their practice implications, and whether they are successful in protecting this potentially vulnerable cohort. Design/methodology/approach A synopsis of available literature in the form of a general …

Jiji Can Talk! An Oral Language Strategy Guide For Blended Learning Math Classrooms Using St Math, William Menz Dec 2016

Jiji Can Talk! An Oral Language Strategy Guide For Blended Learning Math Classrooms Using St Math, William Menz

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question addressed in this project was, how can an oral language strategy guide be created to support ELs language development in the elementary math classroom that uses ST Math. The capstone outlines strategies that can be paired with online content from ST Math to help ELs and native speakers develop oral language around the math puzzles presented in the standards based curriculum. By simultaneously addressing conceptual understanding of math content and English language development, the strategy guide works to meet the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the Principles of Math Instruction for ELs using ST Math, …

Developing A Spiritual Leadership Curriculum At West University Church Of Christ, Daniel Mcgraw Dec 2016

Developing A Spiritual Leadership Curriculum At West University Church Of Christ, Daniel Mcgraw

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

In the fall of 2015, I worked with a small group of congregational members to develop a spiritual leadership curriculum for the West Houston Church of Christ. Many of the congregation’s leaders were feeling a sense of burnout and weariness in ministry. They yearned to deepen their own connection with God to energize their ministry. This article relates the history of the congregation before the intervention, outlines the process of the intervention, from its theological underpinnings to the development of the curriculum, and finally, examines the efficacy of this intervention.

Hookup Culture On College Campuses: Centering College Women, Communication Barriers, And Negative Outcomes, Laura Klinger Dec 2016

Hookup Culture On College Campuses: Centering College Women, Communication Barriers, And Negative Outcomes, Laura Klinger

College Student Affairs Leadership

The majority of college students feel that their lives are dominated by the hookup culture, or a sexual culture of non-committed sexual encounters. However, college students are actually participating in this culture in much smaller numbers than they believe their peers to be, pointing to a culture that is driven by perception rather than clear communication or healthy desire. This article provides a comprehensive review of the literature on this subject, with particular emphasis on the challenges to communication that exist within hookup relationships with the understanding that this may contribute to the negative outcomes experienced by students. As women …

Ecological And Policy Studies To Forecast The Future Of Mosquito-Borne Disease Control, Jill Nicole Ulrich Dec 2016

Ecological And Policy Studies To Forecast The Future Of Mosquito-Borne Disease Control, Jill Nicole Ulrich

Open Access Dissertations

Now is a critical time for mosquito-borne disease (MBD) control. Although the reductions in the burden of malaria over the past decade and a half have saved more than a million lives, during the same period many mosquito-borne arboviruses have expanded in incidence and geographical range, causing large epidemics. With traditional mosquito control tools losing the battle against insecticide resistance and new biological control tools still in field trials, it is critical that MBD experts take a systematic approach to prepare for the future. The new biocontrol strategy of combating dengue fever with Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti is being tested at …

2009 1m Snow Depth For Reynolds Mountain East, Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed, Idaho, Rupesh Shrestha Dec 2016

2009 1m Snow Depth For Reynolds Mountain East, Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed, Idaho, Rupesh Shrestha

Boise Center Aerospace Laboratory Data

Snow depth was calculated for the general area of Reynolds Mountain East in Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed using lidar data collected in November 10-18, 2007 (snow off) and March 19, 2009 (snow on). The raw point clouds were filtered using the BCAL Lidar Tools and then 2007 and 2009 point clouds were georeferenced to each other. The point clouds were then rasterized to 1 m and the 2007 bare earth raster was subtracted from the 2009 snow on raster to create a 1 m snow depth product. Development Of An Hplc-Based Oligosaccharide Synthesizer, Salvatore Pistorio Dec 2016

Development Of An Hplc-Based Oligosaccharide Synthesizer, Salvatore Pistorio

Dissertations

Carbohydrates are the most abundant molecules on Earth. They are involved in a wide range of fundamental biological processes: anti-inflammation, immune response, joint lubrication, cell growth, antigenic determination. Carbohydrates are also held responsible for many damaging cellular processes, such as bacterial and viral infections, development of tumors, etc.. Therefore, the development of effective methods for the synthesis of complex carbohydrates has become a critical area of glycosciences. One challenge that stands out is the stereocontrol in the synthesis of glycosidic bonds, the linkage that serves as the only means to connect simple monosaccharides into complex oligomeric networks. Beyond this, the …

Levin Analyzes The Life, Work Of Artists., Aldemaro Romero Jr. Dec 2016

Levin Analyzes The Life, Work Of Artists., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

For many, the history of art is a recounting of names and dates. For Dr. Gail Levin, it is about the human stories behind great pieces of art. “I became in- terested in art because my mother had gone to art school and her parents made her drop out, because they thought art was sinful,” says this native of Atlanta, Georgia. The reason was that, as orthodox Jewish immigrants, her grandparents became alarmed when her mother began winning prizes for painting male nudes.

Levin not only de ed her grandparents’ traditions but took her studies very seriously, thanks to her …

A Small Step Forwards On The Erd˝Os-S´Os Problem Concerning The Ramsey Numbers R(3, K), Rujie Zhu, Xiaodong Xu, Stanislaw Radziszowski

Articles

Let ∆s = R(K3, Ks) − R(K3, Ks−1), where R(G, H) is the Ramsey number of graphs G and H defined as the smallest n such that any edge coloring of Kn with two colors contains G in the first color or H in the second color. In 1980, Erd˝os and S´os posed some questions about the growth of ∆s. The best known concrete bounds on ∆s are 3 ≤ ∆s ≤ s, and they have not been improved since the stating of the problem. In this paper we present some constructions, which imply in particular that R(K3, Ks) ≥ …
