Biblical Foundations For Nutrition And An Abundant Life, Elizabeth Snyder, M.A. Dec 2016

Biblical Foundations For Nutrition And An Abundant Life, Elizabeth Snyder, M.A.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The purpose of this paper is to look at what the Bible says about the significance of nutrition, its effect on health, and the benefits of a Christian-worldview on nutritional wellbeing. With the help of the Holy Spirit, nutrition teachers need to connect the science with the Biblical foundation God has given us in His word. While it is crucial to remember that salvation is through Christ alone, it is wise to recognize the connection between diet and frontal lobe function, where analytical, moral decisions are made. Studying and understanding what the Bible says about the original diet, clean vs. …

The Teaching Methods Of Jesus, John W. Mccoy, Ed.D. Dec 2016

The Teaching Methods Of Jesus, John W. Mccoy, Ed.D.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

Jesus was the Master Teacher. This was recognized by the great leaders of His day, by His followers, and through the ages by Christians right up to today. If we recognize our calling to teaching, even though we might have been trained via methods courses or have come to our positions because of experience and years of study, what better way to gauge our teaching ability than by finding out how Jesus taught and carrying that over into our classrooms today?

This paper will explore the methods Jesus used to get His message across to the people of His day …

The Biblical Foundation For Social Workers As “Shepherds” Who Care For God’S Flock, Lorri Merchant, M.S.W. Dec 2016

The Biblical Foundation For Social Workers As “Shepherds” Who Care For God’S Flock, Lorri Merchant, M.S.W.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The purpose of this paper is to reveal biblical foundations of caring for people in the context of professional social work practice. To accomplish this, the paper first identifies principles of caring as articulated in the accounts of shepherds and shepherding found in the Bible. Shepherding and the “Good Shepherd” discourse provide the biblical foundation for understanding what it means to care for others. Second, the core values of the social work profession are examined alongside the biblical principles, as they provide a professional foundation for the care social workers provide their clients. Third, overall biblical principles are compared with …

Building Biblically Founded Faith And Values Through A Campus-Wide Healthy Lifestyle Project, Holly Gadd, Ph.D., Lillian Tryon, D.N.P. Dec 2016

Building Biblically Founded Faith And Values Through A Campus-Wide Healthy Lifestyle Project, Holly Gadd, Ph.D., Lillian Tryon, D.N.P.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

Essential to Seventh-day Adventist education is the development and strengthening of a biblically founded faith as a result of the student’s program of study and extracurricular activities. Much of Jesus’ ministry involved teaching. The goal of His teaching was to clearly reveal God’s love to a fallen world (John 17:6, 23 New International Version). At the end of His ministry, Jesus commissioned His followers to “preach the gospel” (Mark 16:15) and to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). As Seventh-day Adventist educators, we are commissioned by God to help our students reach not just career goals, but goals set …

Gideon’S Fleece: A Biblical Narrative Providing A Framework For Discussion Of Issues In The Relationship Between Scientific Inquiry And Divine Revelation, Brent Hamstra, Ph.D. Dec 2016

Gideon’S Fleece: A Biblical Narrative Providing A Framework For Discussion Of Issues In The Relationship Between Scientific Inquiry And Divine Revelation, Brent Hamstra, Ph.D.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The story of Gideon’s attempt to determine God’s will by placing a fleece on the ground overnight and observing its moisture content relative to the surrounding ground, given in Judges 6:36-40, provides a framework for the discussion of several issues related to scientific inquiry and its relationship to divine activity and revelation. Issues noted in this paper include proper experimental design and execution, the manner in which God interacts with nature, human expectations of God’s interactions with nature, the roles of general and special revelation in knowing God’s past, present, and future activity, and the contrast between faith based on …

Teaching Art History From A Biblical Foundation:Art History As A View Into The Great Controversy, Giselle Sarli Hasel, M.F.A. Dec 2016

Teaching Art History From A Biblical Foundation:Art History As A View Into The Great Controversy, Giselle Sarli Hasel, M.F.A.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

This paper provides a broad historical overview of how Judeo-Christian philosophy and values have been communicated through the arts. It suggests that our need for artistic expression is part of our search and longing for what is greater than us. This is a divine mandate for the Bible asserts God as an artist and the role His creativity plays in the relationship between God and humanity. But Exodus 20 also indicates that this relationship can be misused and misunderstood with the prohibition of idolatry. There is a clear biblical differentiation between the wise artist, who uses art for the search …

A Narrative Of Kingdom Culture, Verlyne Starr, M.A. Dec 2016

A Narrative Of Kingdom Culture, Verlyne Starr, M.A.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The purpose of this paper is to encourage Christian educators to use narrative as a pedagogical strategy to enhance the knowledge of and authenticate the values of the kingdom of God. Effective biblical narrative illustrates and emphasizes heaven’s culture, or kingdom culture, in contrast to earthly cultural norms. Narrative effectively suspends disbelief and doubt in the mind of the listener and can facilitate sharing the distinctive Seventh-day Adventist biblical worldview (biblical worldview). Stories help the audience make sense of complex concepts and discover unknown facts and perspectives. The communication of cultural norms through stories has normative ramifications on the listener’s …

The Great Controversy Paradigm For History: Scholarship And Teaching, Lisa Clark Diller, Ph.D. Dec 2016

The Great Controversy Paradigm For History: Scholarship And Teaching, Lisa Clark Diller, Ph.D.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

Seventeenth century England was a time of profound Protestant faith. It was also the heyday of the Scientific Revolution and the early Enlightenment. The Scottish Anglican minister, Gilbert Burnet, was deeply committed to the scientific advances he was learning in mathematics and chemistry. He was just as deeply committed to promoting Protestantism against what he saw as a growing tide of Catholic power in England, Scotland, and, indeed, all of Europe. As part of his pastoral role, he wrote The History of the Reformation in England to remind his fellow Protestants, both Anglican and Nonconformists of all kinds, of how …

History Highlights The Fundamental Limitations Of Science, Kenneth E. Caviness, Ph.D. Dec 2016

History Highlights The Fundamental Limitations Of Science, Kenneth E. Caviness, Ph.D.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The idea that science is the only valid guide to truth is not itself a scientific statement, but rather the fundamental dogma of scientism. It is the purpose of this paper to show this claim to be unwarranted and scientism untenable, through a consideration of what science can and cannot say, illustrated from the history of science itself. Discussion of criteria for selecting among models making equivalent predictions is highlighted by examples of common reactions of the scientific community when new observational data conflict with well-accepted theory: to deny the observations, to adapt or replace the theory (often at the …
