Design Of A Clinical Competency Committee To Maximize Formative Feedback., Anthony A. Donato, Richard Alweis, Suzanne Wenderoth
Design Of A Clinical Competency Committee To Maximize Formative Feedback., Anthony A. Donato, Richard Alweis, Suzanne Wenderoth
Reading Hospital Internal Medicine Residency
BACKGROUND: As the next phase in the roll-out of Next Accreditation System, US residency programs are to develop Clinical Competency Committees (CCCs) to formally implement outcome-based medical education objectives in the resident assessment process. However, any changes to an assessment system must consider balancing formative and summative tensions, flexibility and standardization tensions, fairness and transparency to learners, and administrative burden for faculty.
OBJECTIVES/METHODS: In this article, one program discusses the approach one internal medicine residency took to create a developmental model CCC. In this model, a learner's mentor presents the argument for competence to the CCC, while a second reviewer …
Rental Home Sweet Home: The Disparate Impact Solution For Renters Evicted From Residential Foreclosures, David Lurie
Rental Home Sweet Home: The Disparate Impact Solution For Renters Evicted From Residential Foreclosures, David Lurie
Northwestern University Law Review
At the end of the last decade, a drastic spike in residential foreclosures brought unprecedented attention to the damage that mass foreclosure often brings to primarily low-income, minority–majority communities. Much of this attention—in both the media and in the legal arena—has been devoted to homeowners disadvantaged by predatory loans and other unsavory practices. However, a recent body of scholarship has shown that the brunt of mass foreclosure often falls on renters, who often have little or no procedural protection from speedy and unexpected eviction from their homes, regardless of lease status or tenure. This Note argues that the Supreme Court’s …
The Death Penalty And The Fifth Amendment, Joseph Blocher
The Death Penalty And The Fifth Amendment, Joseph Blocher
Northwestern University Law Review
Can the Supreme Court find unconstitutional something that the text of the Constitution “contemplates”? If the Bill of Rights mentions a punishment, does that make it a “permissible legislative choice” immune to independent constitutional challenges?
Recent developments have given new hope to those seeking constitutional abolition of the death penalty. But some supporters of the death penalty continue to argue, as they have since Furman v. Georgia, that the death penalty must be constitutional because the Fifth Amendment explicitly contemplates it. The appeal of this argument is obvious, but its strength is largely superficial, and is also mostly irrelevant to …

Tapping The Archives: The Sterol Composition Of Marine Sponge Species, As Determined Non-Invasively From Museum Preserved Specimens, Reveals Biogeographical Features, Sk Lengger, J Fromont, K Grice
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Over 8600 species are currently recorded in the phylum Porifera (sponges). They produce a large diversity of biochemical compounds including sterols, with more than 250 different sterols identified. Some of these sterols are of great interest, due to their use for fingerprinting in ecological and biomarker (molecular fossil) studies. As a large number of identified extant species from biodiversity surveys are housed in museum collections, preserved in ethanol, these present a potentially rich source of identified specimens for comparative lipid analyses. Here, we show that, in at least one species, sterol distributions obtained from the ethanol used to preserve specimens …

Is There Moral Hazard In The Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (Hipc) Initiative Debt Relief Process?, Joshua C. Hall, Serkan Karadas, Minh Tam T. Schlosky
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
The Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative and the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI) were created by the IMF and World Bank to help low-income countries reduce their debt burden and to facilitate reaching the Millennium Development Goals. After entering the decision point of the HIPC Initiative stage, countries receive interim aid while following a strategic path to improve their macroeconomic stability via structural reforms. Many countries reached the completion point of the HIPC Initiative stage within a few years, receiving a substantial amount of debt re- lief. Other countries remained in the interim period for almost a decade. We …
Physiological, Behavioral, And Knowledge Assessment Of Runners’ Readiness To Perform In The Heat, Yuri Hosokawa
Physiological, Behavioral, And Knowledge Assessment Of Runners’ Readiness To Perform In The Heat, Yuri Hosokawa
Doctoral Dissertations
Many intrinsic and extrinsic factors may contribute to exertional heat stroke (EHS) susceptibility. Despite many plausible risk factors for EHS in runners, much remains unknown about how risk factors contribute to EHS risk and how education to modify behavior may reduce EHS risk. Therefore, this study investigated: (1) the differences between runners’ planned and actual hours of sleep, hydration strategies, and intake of medication and supplements at the 2016 Falmouth Road Race (FRR) and their current knowledge on heat safety and hydration, (2) effectiveness of educational video intervention in improving runner’s knowledge on heat safety and hydration, (3) effectiveness in …
Extension Of L1 Adaptive Control With Applications, Jiaxing Che
Extension Of L1 Adaptive Control With Applications, Jiaxing Che
Doctoral Dissertations
Adaptive control is the control method used by a controller which adapt to a system with unknown or varying parameters. As a newly developed technique, L1 adaptive control has drawn increased attention in past decades. The key feature of L1 adaptive control architecture is guaranteed robustness in the presence of fast adaptation. With L1 adaptive control architecture, fast adaptation appears to be beneficial both for performance and robustness, while the trade-off between the two is resolved via the selection of the underlying filtering structure. The latter can be addressed via conventional methods from classical and robust control. Moreover, the performance …
An Experimental Investigation Of The Factors Supporting The Emergence Of Spatial Agreement In Nicaraguan Sign Language, Emily Carrigan
An Experimental Investigation Of The Factors Supporting The Emergence Of Spatial Agreement In Nicaraguan Sign Language, Emily Carrigan
Doctoral Dissertations
Studies of natural language emergence provide unique opportunities for examining the learner-internal and environmental factors underlying language development, but lack the control of factors necessary to test hypotheses about language development. By ‘language development,’ I intend to encompass both language acquisition and modern-day language change/emergence, which I argue are driven by many of the same factors. Researchers of Nicaraguan Sign Language, an emerging language, have proposed that intergenerational transfer and particularly child language-learning mechanisms (e.g. the propensity to ‘reanalyze’ and systematize inconsistent input) shape the development of the language. We observe this potential pattern in the emergence of the systematic …

The Role Of Prospective And Retrospective Cognition In Adolescent Mental Health, Gabriel F. Byer-Alcorace
Doctoral Dissertations
This study attempted to replicate the methods of Miles, MacLeod, and Pote (2004) who attempted to extend the application of a theory proposed by Andrew MacLeod and colleagues in the late 1990s. Only the aforementioned study has examined this theory with adolescents ages 14 to 19 year olds enrolled in public schools and 18 to 19 year olds enrolled universities. In the present study 169 students were asked to complete an assessment battery containing measures of depression, anxiety, stress, hope, and demographic information, as well as completing a positive and negative cognition task. It was hypothesized that a strong negative …
Cultural Trauma, History Making, And The Politics Of Ethnic Identity Among Afghan Hazaras, Melissa S. Kerr Chiovenda
Cultural Trauma, History Making, And The Politics Of Ethnic Identity Among Afghan Hazaras, Melissa S. Kerr Chiovenda
Doctoral Dissertations
Based on 18 months of fieldwork in Bamyan and West Kabul, Afghanistan among ethnic Hazara civil society activists, I examine civil society groups’ protests and memorialization activities as social and political acts of collective and cultural trauma generation and dissemination. The activists’ protests seek to secure greater rights, security and infrastructural development in Hazara populated areas, and memorialize past rights violations and atrocities against Hazaras. Through protests, literature and social media, the retelling of traumatic events inculcates and spreads collective trauma. And the framing of these past events as a present existential threat merges with a widespread sense that Hazara …

Biology ETDs
Climate change is challenging scientists and decision-makers to understand the complexities of climate change and to predict the related effects at scales relevant to environmental policy and the management of ecosystem services. Extraordinary change in climate, and the ensuing impacts to ecosystem services, are widely anticipated for the southwestern United States. Predicting the vulnerability of Southwest ecosystems and their components has been a priority of natural resource organizations over the past decade. Supplementing vulnerability assessments in the region with geospatial inputs of high thematic and spatial detail has become vital for supporting local analyses, planning, and decisions. In this context …

Passive Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) And Museum Collections, Owen Kinser
Passive Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) And Museum Collections, Owen Kinser
Master's Projects and Capstones
Keeping a collection organized and accounted for is a never-ending struggle for museums of every type. New to museums and the collections management field, Radio Frequency Identification is a growing technology that museums can implement to keep track of the location, status, condition, and movement of their objects. Objects are labeled with RFID “tags” which enable them to communicate custom information to a reader and ultimately a database. This implementation would save time, money, and stress among collections staff members. Using the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, Texas, as my subject museum, I propose implementing a pilot …

An Intercomparison Of Dissolved Iron Speciation At The Bermuda Atlantic Time-Series Study (Bats) Site: Results From Geotraces Crossover Station A, Kristen N. Buck, Loes J. A. Gerringa, Micha J. A. Rijkenberg
Marine Science Faculty Publications
The organic complexation of dissolved iron (Fe) was determined in depth profile samples collected from GEOTRACES Crossover Station A, the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) site, as part of the Dutch and U.S. GEOTRACES North Atlantic programs in June 2010 and November 2011, respectively. The two groups employed distinct competitive ligand exchange-adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (CLE-AdCSV) methods, and resulting ligand concentrations and conditional stability constants from each profile were compared. Excellent agreement was found between the total ligand concentrations determined in June 2010 and the strongest, L1-type, ligand concentrations determined in November 2011. Yet a primary distinction between …

'Rebellious Highlanders': The Reception Of Corsica In The Edinburgh Periodical Press, 1730-1800, Rhona Brown
Studies in Scottish Literature
Examines the way Scottish periodicals, especially the Weekly Magazine and the Caledonian Mercury, reported and discussed the nationalist resistance in Corsica against first Genoese and then French rule; recalibrates the role of James Boswell in shaping Scottish opinion about Corsica, especially in his Account of Corsica (1768); notes the parallels made by Scottish commentators between the Corsican resistance under Pascal Paoli and the Scottish highlands, especially the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745; and suggests the value of looking at the distinctive responses of Scottish periodicals, not just the print networks based on London.

Background:
We are partnering with community health centers (CHCs) and their patients to redesign systems to deliver timely care to underserved populations in Indiana. Our Delphi study was designed to address two questions: 1) what solutions (e.g. organizational factors, processes, procedures) serve as facilitators to accessing care?; and 2) what organizational strategies might work to implement solutions in CHC environments?
Methods:
We used a modified Delphi method, bringing experts together in one room for a face-to-face meeting to prioritize solutions for reducing access barriers and strategies to implement …
Breaking Barriers: Saudi Women In Non Traditional Careers, Suad Dukhaykh
Breaking Barriers: Saudi Women In Non Traditional Careers, Suad Dukhaykh
Student Scholarship
Women occupy only 15.8 percent of the private and public positions occupied by Saudi nationals, according to statistics from the Central Department of Statistics and Information 2015. The Saudi government has highlighted the need to support women's higher education and combat sociopolitical barriers to their employment. Despite facing substantial challenges to entering the labor market, females have made gains in Saudi society; these include higher literacy rates, greater employment, and moderate rates of entry into both positions of leadership and nontraditional careers. Qualitative research was based on semi-structured interviews with 30 women, 18 of whom had nontraditional careers and 12 …
A Transactional Model And Platform For Designing And Implementing Reactive Systems, Justin Ross Wilson
A Transactional Model And Platform For Designing And Implementing Reactive Systems, Justin Ross Wilson
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
A reactive program is one that has "ongoing interactions with its environment." Reactive programs include those for embedded systems, operating systems, network clients and servers, databases, and smart phone apps. Reactive programs are already a core part of our computational and physical infrastructure and will continue to proliferate within our society as new form factors, e.g. wireless sensors, and inexpensive (wireless) networking are applied to new problems.
Asynchronous concurrency is a fundamental characteristic of reactive systems that makes them difficult to develop. Threads are commonly used for implementing reactive systems, but they may magnify problems associated with asynchronous concurrency, as …
Characterizing Nonmodel Microorganisms And Reconstructing Catabolic Pathways For Bio-Productions, Whitney Hollinshead
Characterizing Nonmodel Microorganisms And Reconstructing Catabolic Pathways For Bio-Productions, Whitney Hollinshead
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
In the 1970s, spikes in oil prices sparked early interests into first-generation biofuels (i.e., the production of ethanol from corn). Four decades later, biofuel manufacturing has under-performed as developed industrial strains suffer from poor performance and high costs of feedstocks. While the advancement in molecular biology has greatly benefited pathway engineering, synthetic biology hosts still cannot overcome the obstacles for profitable microbial bio-production. One approach may be to study non-model organisms and employ their metabolic features towards an improved bio-production pipeline. Here, this thesis aims to develop 13C-metabolism analysis tools to characterize novel organisms and re-program cell metabolism using novel …
Genetic Circuits For Transcriptional Regulation In Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, Cheryl M. Immethun
Genetic Circuits For Transcriptional Regulation In Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, Cheryl M. Immethun
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Microbial biosynthesis has produced a variety of complex compounds using processes that are more environmentally-friendly than many conventional methods. The most common hosts are heterotrophs, which require the addition of an organic carbon source; while cyanobacteria possess many traits that make them a more sustainable biotechnology platform. As phototrophs, cyanobacteria can employ sunlight and carbon dioxide to create many value-added compounds. A wealth of tools has been developed to engineer the commonly used heterotrophs for higher yields and titers; yet, few synthetic biology tools have been designed for cyanobacteria. Furthermore, many of the tools created for heterotrophs do not function …
Towards Clinical Photoacoustic Imaging: Developing Next-Generation Endoscopy Systems And Exploring New Contrast Agents, Chiye Li
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Photoacoustic imaging holds great clinical promise because it achieves high-resolution tomographic imaging at depths. Moreover, its strong spectroscopic imaging capability provides a wealth of molecular and functional information based on. Still, despite recent advances, existing photoacoustic systems cannot be readily applied in the clinical environment. This dissertation aims to push the frontier of clinical photoacoustic imaging from both technological and applicational perspectives.
The first part of this dissertation describes the development of photoacoustic endoscopy (PAE) systems for imaging human Barrett's esophagus and studying preterm birth. We have developed optical resolution-PAE, which significantly improved lateral resolutions, laparoscopic-PAE, which can guide minimally-invasive …
Focusing Light Inside Scattering Media With Optical Phase Conjugation, Yan Liu
Focusing Light Inside Scattering Media With Optical Phase Conjugation, Yan Liu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
In scattering media such as biological tissue, the heterogeneous refractive index distribution causes light to scatter, which makes the media look opaque and prevents us from focusing light beyond ~1 mm deep inside the media to achieve optical imaging and manipulation. Hence, the ability to focus light deep inside scattering media is highly desired, and it could revolutionize biophotonics by enabling deep-tissue non-invasive high-resolution optical microscopy, optical tweezing, optogenetics, micro-surgery, and phototherapy.
To break the optical diffusion limit and focus light deep inside scattering media, optical phase conjugation based wavefront shaping techniques, such as time-reversed ultrasonically encoded (TRUE) optical focusing, …
Developing High Purity Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived V2a Interneurons For In Vitro Investigation And Transplantation Following Spinal Cord Injury, Nisha Iyer
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Functional recovery following spinal cord injury has been attributed to plasticity in local interneuron populations, which are able to create novel circuits that bypass the inhibitory lesion to activate pre-existing motor pathways. Cell replacement strategies and growth factor delivery platforms often attempt to enhance these natural mechanisms of regeneration. The work of this thesis sought to overcome the major obstacle to manipulating specific interneurons for therapy: an inability to obtain large, enriched interneuron subpopulations for drug screening and transplantation. We focused on the generation of V2a interneurons, which normally coordinate a wide range of locomotor tasks in both the spinal …
Fluorescence Imaging Of Cortical Calcium Dynamics: A Tool For Visualizing Mouse Brain Functions, Connections, And Networks, Patrick William Wright
Fluorescence Imaging Of Cortical Calcium Dynamics: A Tool For Visualizing Mouse Brain Functions, Connections, And Networks, Patrick William Wright
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Hemodynamic-based markers of cortical activity (e.g. functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and optical intrinsic signal imaging) are an indirect and relatively slow report of neural activity driven by electrical and metabolic activity through neurovascular coupling, which presents significant limiting factors in deducing underlying brain network dynamics. As application of resting state functional connectivity (FC) measures is extended further into topics such as brain development, aging, and disease, the importance of understanding the fundamental basis for FC will grow.
In this dissertation, we extend functional analysis from hemodynamic- to calcium-based imaging. Transgenic mice expressing a fluorescent calcium indicator (GCaMP6) driven by …
Development Of A One-Equation Eddy Viscosity Turbulence Model For Application To Complex Turbulent Flows, Timothy Wray
Development Of A One-Equation Eddy Viscosity Turbulence Model For Application To Complex Turbulent Flows, Timothy Wray
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is routinely used in performance prediction and design of aircraft, turbomachinery, automobiles, and in many other industrial applications. Despite its wide range of use, deficiencies in its prediction accuracy still exist. One critical weakness is the accurate simulation of complex turbulent flows using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with a turbulence model. The goal of this research has been to develop an eddy viscosity type turbulence model to increase the accuracy of flow simulations for mildly separated flows, flows with rotation and curvature effects, and flows with surface roughness. It is accomplished by developing a …
Novel Contrasts In Photoacoustic Tomography, Ruiying Zhang
Novel Contrasts In Photoacoustic Tomography, Ruiying Zhang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) combines rich optical contrast and high ultrasonic resolution in optically scattering tissue at depths. Taking advantage of its 100% sensitivity to optical absorption, PAT has been widely applied to structural, functional and molecular imaging, with both endogenous and exogenous contrasts, at superior depths than pure optical methods. This dissertation explores novel absorption contrast mechanisms of PAT based on optical/thermal patterns, endogenous cellular chromophores, nanoparticles, small-molecule dyes and genetically-encoded proteins. With these novel contrasts, the proof-of-concept applications of PAT have been extended to include homogenous flow measurements, targeted angiogenesis imaging and therapy, label-free white blood cell imaging, 3D-whole-organ …
