Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

The main objectives of this research are to improve our understanding of energy-climate-manufacturing nexus within the context of regional and global manufacturing supply chains as well as show the significance of full coverage of entire supply chain tiers in order to prevent significant underestimations, which might lead to invalid policy conclusions. With this motivation, a multi region input–output (MRIO) sustainability assessment model is developed by using the World Input–Output Database, which is a dynamic MRIO framework on the world’s 40 largest economies covering 1440 economic sectors. The method presented in this study is the first environmentally-extended MRIO model that harmonizes …

Fuzzy Attitude Control Of Solar Sail, Joshua Baculi Dec 2016

Fuzzy Attitude Control Of Solar Sail, Joshua Baculi

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

This study presents various fuzzy type controllers for a solar sail. First, a Twin Parallel Distributed Compensator (TPDC) is built for a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model of the solarsail. The T-S fuzzy model is constructed by linearizing the existing nonlinear equations fo motion of the solar sail. The T-S fuzzy model is used to solve a set of linear matrix inequalities to derive state feedback controller gains. The TPDC controls the solar sail using a combination of reaction wheels and roll stabilizer bars for attitude control and trim masses for disturbance rejection. The TPDC tracks and stabilizes the solar sail to …

Warlord: The Political And Military Ambitions Of Nazi Germany, William R. Underhill Dec 2016

Warlord: The Political And Military Ambitions Of Nazi Germany, William R. Underhill

Senior Theses

There are so many important stories to consider when thinking about World War II. It is easy to think about the popular aspects of the war: the causes, the major figures, the battles, and, of course, the lasting consequences. Yet there are other, lesser known storylines to consider, ones that have taken a backseat to the more popular narratives of the time. It is commonly understood that Nazi Germany was evil and that they had nothing but ill intentions for the rest of Europe and the world. However, it is vital to understand that Germany’s pre-war intentions are notably different …

Scaling Up The Maine Harvest Bucks Program: A Comprehensive Report Examining The Complexities Of Expanding To Retail, Emma Egan, Jenny Rosenfield, Nora Stoner

Community Engaged Research Reports

This collaborative assessment utilizes a number of exploratory methodologies to evaluate Nutrition Incentive Programs (NIPs) and the features they encompass across the United States. Using information about other statewide Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) initiatives as models and frameworks, we assembled a series of recommendations as to how the Maine Harvest Bucks Nutrition Incentive Program could transition, and scale-up, from being in only farmers’ markets, to large, traditional retail venues. In situating this assessment and our recommendations in the specific context of the state of Maine, this report recognizes the perpetual friction that exists in the United States between the …

Repetitive genomic regions include tandem sequence repeats and interspersed repeats, such as endogenous retroviruses and LINE-1 elements. Repressive heterochromatin domains silence expression of these sequences through mechanisms that remain poorly understood. Here, we present evidence that the retinoblastoma protein (pRB) utilizes a cell-cycle-independent interaction with E2F1 to recruit enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) to diverse repeat sequences. These include simple repeats, satellites, LINEs, and endogenous retroviruses as well as transposon fragments. We generated a mutant mouse strain carrying an F832A mutation in Rb1 that is defective for recruitment to repetitive sequences. Loss of pRB-EZH2 complexes from repeats disperses H3K27me3 …

Motility And Adhesion Through Type Iv Pili In Gram-Positive Bacteria, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Eric J. Sundberg Dec 2016

Motility And Adhesion Through Type Iv Pili In Gram-Positive Bacteria, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Eric J. Sundberg

Food for Health: Publications

Type IV pili are hair-like bacterial surface appendages that play a role in diverse processes such as cellular adhesion, colonization, twitching motility, biofilm formation, and horizontal gene transfer. These extracellular fibers are composed exclusively or primarily of many copies of one or more pilin proteins, tightly packed in a helix so that the highly hydrophobic amino-terminus of the pilin is buried in the pilus core. Type IV pili have been characterized extensively in Gram-negative bacteria, and recent advances in high-throughput genomic sequencing have revealed that they are also widespread in Gram-positive bacteria. Here, we review the current state of knowledge …

Identifying The Complexity Of Bipolar Disorder, Brandie Marie Stiles Dec 2016

Identifying The Complexity Of Bipolar Disorder, Brandie Marie Stiles

Dissertations

Bipolar disorder is a complex illness that is difficult to correctly diagnosis and treat. Experts estimate that a correct diagnosis and treatment for bipolar disorder may be delayed for up to 7-10 years after symptoms become problematic. The primary purpose of this study was to identify the complexity of diagnosing bipolar disorder, including diagnostic patterns, recommended treatment, and patient response. A focused ethnography, including in-depth interviews and a retrospective chart review, were completed to answer the research questions: 1) What is the nature of the experience of receiving a diagnosis of bipolar disorder? 2) What are the diagnostic and treatment …

Examining Patient Outcomes Of Telemedicine In Rural Emergency Departments, Jessica R. Dalton Dec 2016

Examining Patient Outcomes Of Telemedicine In Rural Emergency Departments, Jessica R. Dalton

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

Increasing shortages of primary care physicians has resulted in the use of family nurse practitioners for staffing of rural Emergency Departments (ED) throughout the United States. Although the majority of these Family Nurse Practitioners have not been formally trained in emergency medicine, they are placed in the role. The specific aim of this study is to examine if using telemedicine in the rural emergency department will improve patient outcomes, decrease transfers, and decrease mortality. This study’s project design is a retrospective chart review of Emergency Department patients at Wilson Medical Center from April 2015 to April 2016 where telemedicine was …

Seaweed And Seagrass Mapping In Thailand Measured Using Landsat 8 Optical And Textural Image Properties, Satomi Kakuta, Wataru Takeuchi, Anchana Prathep

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Seaweed and seagrass beds are an important ecosystem in coastal zones. However, they are degrading because of various causes, such as the anthropogenic impacts of coastal development, aquaculture, overharvesting, and climate change. To contribute to the research related to coastal blue carbon and marine biodiversity as well as conservation and sustainable management of natural resources in coastal regions, the spatial distribution of benthic cover derived from satellite images can be the most practical tool for monitoring seaweed and seagrass beds. This study aimed at mapping the latest distribution of seaweed and seagrass in Thailand using Landsat 8 images. Thus, we …
