Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

This article explores Head Start’s overall effectiveness in improving school readiness outcomes and its potential to reduce gaps in these outcomes in light of changing program goals, resource and funding capacity, and the demographic changes in the low-income child population it serves. Although not an explicit goal of the Head Start program, we assess whether and how the program can address reducing school readiness gaps between children of different racial and ethnic backgrounds and income groups. Because of changing policy priorities and targeting vulnerable groups of children with diverse needs, meeting Head Start goals within funding constraints can be challenging. …

One of the byproducts of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the commissioning of a study by the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare to better understand the disposition of the nation’s educational system. By 1966, the most comprehensive educational study to date was completed, the Equality of Educational Opportunity (Coleman et al., 1966). Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains a severe health problem worldwide. Current noise metrics and models have assessment limitations on gradually developing NIHL (GDNIHL). In this study, we apply a complex velocity level (CVL) auditory fatigue model to quantitatively assess the impact of basilar membrane (BM) movement on GDNIHL. The transfer functions of chinchilla and human auditory systems, including the triple-path nonlinear (TRNL) filters to simulate the inner ear responses, are applied to obtain BM velocity distribution. Chinchilla and human experimental hearing loss data are used to validate the proposed CVL model’s effectiveness. The results reveal that the developed CVL …

The Census Bureau estimates the July 1, 2016 population of Nebraska to be 1,907,116. The state hit a new population milestone, exceeding the 1.9 million mark for the first time. Seven years passed between exceeding 1.8 million for the first time in 2009 and this new milestone in 2016. This 7-year timespan ties for the shortest such duration to gain 100,000 persons with the 7-year period from 1992 to 1999, when the state rose from 1.6 million to 1.7 million residents. The purpose of this curriculum development Capstone was to create a unit of lessons to address how we educate children that live in a water rich environment about the need for water conservation. The curriculum contains lessons in a kit that educate children about water cycles, water sheds, water run-off, water pollution, and water conservation. Methods of teaching include hands-on lessons, small and large group activities that incorporate literature. The overall goal is to create curriculum that would foster a sense of water conservation stewardship in students. Included with this curriculum are copies of handouts, assessments, and literature.

Theory On Meaningful Retirement Through Volunteerism: An Application Among The Elderly, Johnny Yao Jr.

Retirement is a phase in an individual’s life wherein there is withdrawal from employment and for most of the elderly, regular remuneration ceases. In spite of this, there is a growing number of retirees who continues to render work through volunteering even after retirement. This correlational study enlisted a multi-stage and purposive sample of 102 volunteer retirees in Cebu City. A 5-part instrument package was utilized to (1) describe the respondents’ demographic characteristics and (2) the nature of their volunteer work. I characterize the entire class of consumption rules for finite-horizon models in which consumption is proportional to lifetime wealth. Any such rule can be obtained from a preference model with CRRA period utility. In a steady state with constant interest rates, a proportional consumption rule can be derived from a model with time-consistent preferences or from a model with possibly time-inconsistent preferences in which a household continually reoptimizes future utility discounted relative to the present instant. The purpose of this study is to trace federal involvement in public K-12 education policy and to determine its effectiveness. Specifically, I present a historical analysis of federal education policy leading to the passage of Race to the Top (RTTT) in 2009. My goal is to show that, although the federal government has grown more involved in education policy, especially from the late 1980s (following the 1983 publication of A Nation At Risk that showed the failings of the nation’s schools) until present, actually students in the K-12 public education system have not progressed as the federal government had hoped. …

These are institutions in which accountability and transparency are indispensable and thus conscientious and principled dissent is a matter of duty. This study inquired into the instances of Principled Organizational Dissent (POD) in State Universities and Colleges (SUC) in Metro Cebu and the perception of POD among the said SUC employees. As evidenced by the cases and complaints filed before the Office of the Ombudsman Visayas, the Civil Service Commission, Region VII, and respective SUCs, SUC employees do engage in POD. Predictors Of Patients’ Adherence To Public – Private Mix Dots (Ppmd) Treatment, John Carlo Divina

This study determines predictors of adherence to PPMD treatment. Grounded on Pender’s health promotion model, the descriptive correlational method is used. Thirty five adherent and 35 non-adherent respondents are chosen through simple random sampling. A validated and reliable researcher-made tool is administered and processed using discriminant analysis of the SPSS version 16. This study finds out that quality of health services (b=0.476, p=0.007) directly influences while income (b=-0.381, p=0.030) and perceived social stigma (b=-0.376, p=0.032) both inversely affect adherence. Patients’ adherence towards PPMD treatment is an interchange of the health care services, social and economic factors.
