Students' Lived Experiences Of The Realization Of Academic Wrongness (Raw), Dana Carol Kemery

Being wrong is a common phenomenon for students in academic environments; however this phenomenon has yet to be described from the student perspective. The purpose of this phenomenologic inquiry is to describe the realization of academic wrongness (RAW) as experienced by senior level nursing students during a high stakes testing period. Observations, class documents, communications, and semi-structured interviews were collected to gain a full description for the realization of academic wrongness within context and as this phenomenon unfolded for the students. The data were analyzed using Moustakas (1994) 7 step phenomenological process. Fourteen invariant constituents emerged during data analysis which …

The modern wingsuit has been the subject of few scientific studies to date, and the prevailing design process remains the dangerous “guess-and-check” method. This study employed the commercial flow solver ANSYS Fluent to solve the steady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with turbulence models. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results provided information on the flow about a wingsuit designed with an airfoil cross section and large planform. The CFD simulation was performed using the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model for the 3D wingsuit case and the k‑kl‑ω Transition model for the 2D airfoil case. From previous experiments, it was determined that nickel was able to coat boron fiber, however this was done unevenly, with cracks characterizing the coating. This was where it was hypothesized that the boron fiber crossed the interface of the nickel electrolyte solution during electrodeposition. This was different than the coating at the middle, which was all under the electrolyte solution, and was characterized by a smoother surface. This experiment sought to find a way to coat the nickel across the boron fiber wire evenly. SEM images were taken at the top and at the middle of the fiber. An overview …

Moudi Analysis Of Particle Size Distributions For Ultrasonic Spraying Of Salt Solutions From An Array Of Microscopic Orifices, Yichen Sun, J. Mark Meacham

We report characterization of spray-based nanoporous particle synthesis for use in the cathode of lithium-ion batteries. Ultrasonic Microarray Spray Tuning (uMIST) was used to create microdroplets of salt solutions and battery material precursors, and the size distributions of produced microdroplets were investigated with a MicroOrifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI). Experimental challenges associated with spray orientation, flow control and consistency of operation were addressed, and a promising solution for continuous droplet collection to obtain a statistically relevant droplet size distribution was proposed. Improved analysis capabilities will lead to a better understanding of the uMIST droplet formation mechanism.

A Locomotion Control Algorithm For Robotic Linkage Systems, Jeffrey L. Dohner Dr.

This dissertation describes the development of a control algorithm that transitions a robotic linkage system between stabilized states producing responsive locomotion. The developed algorithm is demonstrated using a simple robotic construction consisting of a few links with actuation and sensing at each joint. Numerical and experimental validation is presented. In this algorithm, transitioning excitations, called rhythms, are formulated using terminal state control solutions. Rhythms are constrained to be low order parameterized functions allowing for the optimal control problem to be replaced by a parametric optimization problem with a limited set of easily solved unknowns. People 65 years or older are having surgery later in life and are at risk of developing a major postoperative complication, delirium. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment, is a preoperative cognitive screening tool which was used to screen thirty-three older orthopedic surgical patients to reduce the incidence of this serious postoperative complication. Patients who scored below normal were identified as at risk and monitored to ascertain if identification and monitoring influenced their postoperative course. Motor systems must adapt to perturbations and changing conditions both within and outside the body. We refer to the ability of a system to maintain performance despite perturbations as “robustness,” and the ability of a system to deploy alternative strategies that improve fitness as “flexibility.” Different classes of pattern-generating circuits yield dynamics with differential sensitivities to perturbations and parameter variation. Depending on the task and the type of perturbation, high sensitivity can either facilitate or hinder robustness and flexibility. GeSbS ridge waveguides have recently been demonstrated as a promising mid - infrared platform for integrated waveguide - based chemical sensing and photodetection. To date, their nonlinear optical properties remain relatively unexplored. In this paper, we characterize the nonlinear optical properties of GeSbS glasses, and show negligible nonlinear losses at 1.55 μm. Using self - phase modulation experiments, we characterize a waveguide nonlinear parameter of 7 W-1/m and nonlinear refractive index of 3.71 x 10-18 m2/W. GeSbS waveguides are used to generate supercontinuum from 1280 nm to 2120 nm at the -30 dB level. The spectrum expands along the red …

Library-Sponsored Case Competitions: Best Practices And Assessment Of Learning Gains, Ilana Stonebraker

The Parrish Library Case Competition is an annual library-administered, library-sponsored case competition where teams of undergraduate students compete against one another to make better evidence-based decisions for business problems. This article includes a description the case competition as a resource for other libraries interested in sponsoring similar case competitions as part of their information literacy programs. Students who participated in the case competition saw their learning grow as assessed through questionnaires and focus groups. Students who had not taken an information literacy course perceived their understanding as lower than those who had taken a course.

BACKGROUND: The current study examined relationships between the neighborhood social environment (parental perceived collective efficacy (PCE)), constrained behaviors (e.g., avoidance or defensive behaviors) and adolescent offspring neighborhood physical activity in low- versus high-incivility neighborhoods. METHODS: Adolescents ( = 71; 11-18 years (14.2, SD ± 1.6); male = 37 (52%); non-white = 24 (33.8%); low-income = 20 (29%); overweight/obese = 40 (56%)) and their parents/guardians enrolled in the Molecular and Social Determinants of Obesity in Developing Youth study were included in the current study. Questionnaires measured parents'/guardians' PCE, constrained outdoor play practices and offspring neighborhood physical activity. Systematic social observation performed …

The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) was passed in 1971 to extinguish aboriginal rights of Alaska Natives and provide compensation for those rights extinguished. Instead of vesting assets (land and money) in tribal governments, Congress required the formation of Alaska Native corporations to receive and hold these assets. A major flaw in the settlement was the failure to provide statutory protections for the aboriginal hunting, fishing, and gathering rights extinguished by ANCSA. Moreover, while ANCSA did not directly address Alaska Native tribal status or jurisdiction, the Supreme Court interpreted the Act to terminate the Indian country status of ANCSA …

In the forty-five years since the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) created the Alaska Native regional corporation and village corporations, shareholders and outside observers have criticized the statute’s use of the traditional corporate form as inappropriate for Alaska Native communities. The emergence of the benefit corporation entity across the United States may soon mean that Native corporations have a promising alternative. If Alaska joins the majority of states that have adopted this new legal entity, Native corporations would have an opportunity to significantly reform their corporate governance within the existing framework of ANCSA. Forty-five years ago, the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act resolved outstanding land claims between the federal and state government and Alaska Natives. The fund created by the settlement was used as seed money to establish the Alaska Native Corporations. The Native corporations have particular features which make them distinct from other business entities, these differences have been lauded by some shareholders but have simultaneously drawn ire from others. In 2015 the Alaska legislature introduced H.B. 49, a benefit corporation bill that would allow entrepreneurs to pursue both profits and social ends. This note traces the rise of the modern Alaska …

Protection Of Alaska Native Customary And Traditional Hunting And Fishing Rights Through Title Viii Of Anilca, John Sky Starkey

This paper analyzes the degree to which the administration of Title VIII of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) of 1980 protects customary and traditional hunting and fishing by Alaska Natives and their tribal communities. A recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) entered into by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Kuskokwim Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (KRITFC) for co-management of subsistence fisheries will be used as a means to analyze the issue. This paper concludes with suggestions for improving the administration of Title VIII to better secure Alaska Native and Tribal rights for self-determination.
