A Simple And Efficient Approach For Preconcentration Of Some Heavy Metals In Cosmetic Products Before Their Determinations By Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, Nai̇l Altunay, Ramazan Gürkan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In the current study, a simple and efficient analytical method for preconcentration and determination of Cd(II), Pb(II), and Sn(II) in some cosmetic samples, using ultrasonic assisted-cloud point extraction and flame atomic absorption spectrometry, was developed. The method is based on the ternary complex formations of Sn(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), which are available in the form of neutral and/or anionic hydroxo complexes (Sn(OH)$_{3}^{-}$, Pb(OH)$_{3}^{-}$, Cd(OH)$_{2}$, and/or Cd(OH)$_{3}^{-})$, with Victoria Pure Blue BO (VPB$^{+})$ in the presence of cetylpyridinium chloride at pH 8.5, and then extraction of the formed ternary complexes into the micellar phase of polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate (Tween 60). Using …

Analytical Capabilities Of Two-Phase Hollow-Fiber Liquid Phase Microextraction For Trace Multielement Determination In Aqueous Samples By Means Of Portable Total Reflection X-Ray Instrumentation, Eva Margui, Manuela Hidalgo
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Liquid phase microextraction (LPME) procedures have been widely used in combination with atomic and emission spectroscopic techniques for the isolation and preconcentration of trace elements. However, its application in combination with total reflection X-ray spectrometry (TXRF) is still scarce. In this paper, we evaluate the possibilities and drawbacks of a two-phase hollow fiber LPME procedure in combination with TXRF for the simultaneous determination of trace amounts of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd in aqueous samples. After extraction of the analytes by using the optimum conditions (sample volume: 25 mL, complexing agent: APDC, organic solvent: hexylbenzene, extraction time: 2 …

Solidified Floating Organic Drop Microextraction For Speciation Of Se (Iv) And Se (Vi) In Water Samples Prior To Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometric Detection, Demi̇rhan Çitak, Mustafa Tüzen
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A simple and fast solidified floating organic drop microextraction (SFODME) method is suggested for the speciation of Se (IV) and Se (VI) in water samples prior to electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometric (ETAAS) detection. For that purpose, 1-phenylthiosemicarbazide (PTC) was used as chelating agent and undecanol was used as extraction solvent. The pH of solution, extraction solvent volume, amount of ligand, effect of time for complex formation, and effect of possible foreign ions were also evaluated for quantitative and effective extraction of analyte. Under optimized parameters, detection limit (0.19 $\mu $g L$^{-1})$, limit of quantification (0.60 $\mu $g L$^{-1})$, relative standard …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Hypericin (HYP)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new alternative treatment strategy for colon cancer inducing various cell-death pathways. Apoptotic cell death is the desired cellular fate in cancer cells. Therefore, we investigated the apoptotic pathways by determining apoptosis-related proteins (survivin, caspase-3, caspase-9, Bcl-2, and Bax) at the mRNA level using real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and the percentage of survivin was determined by survivin ELISA in HT-29 and Caco-2 colon cancer cell lines. The downregulation of survivin was significant 16 h after PDT for both cells, while caspase-3 upregulation was apparent 24 h after PDT. Caspase-9 and caspase-3 upregulations were …

In Silico Genome-Wide Identification And Analysis Of Microsatellite Repeats In The Largest Rna Virus Family (Closteroviridae), Biju George, Binu George, Mayur Awasthi, Ram Nageena Singh
Turkish Journal of Biology
Microsatellites are known to exhibit ubiquitous presence across all kingdoms of life, including viruses. Members of the family Closteroviridae are the largest RNA viruses and severely affect different agricultural crops worldwide, including1397645907citrus, grapevine, and vegetables. Here we identified and systematically analyzed the nature and distribution of both simple and complex microsatellites present in the complete genome of 36 species belonging to Closteroviridae. Our results showed, in all analyzed genomes, that neither genome size nor GC content had any influence on number, relative abundance, or relative density of microsatellites. For each genome, dinucleotide repeats were found to be highly predominant and …

Anatomical And Ultrastructural Responses Of Brassica Napus After Long-Term Exposure To Excess Zinc, Seyed Mousa Mousavi Kouhi, Mehrdad Lahouti, Ali Ganjeali, Mohammad Hassan Entezari
Turkish Journal of Biology
Heavy metal contamination resulting from anthropogenic activities is one of the major environmental problems in the modern world. Progress toward creating modified plants that are more efficient in phytoremediation requires an understanding of the anatomical and ultrastructural changes involved in heavy metal accumulation. A large supply of zinc (Zn) is toxic for plants and can lead to functional and structural disorders. The present study investigates the anatomical and ultrastructural responses of Brassica napus (rapeseed) to excess Zn after long-term exposure. Results showed that Zn bioaccumulation in the roots and leaves of plants treated with 350 μM Zn2+ was severely increased, …

Cancer Stem Cells: Lessons Learned From The Leukemic Stem Cells, Ayten Kandi̇lci̇
Turkish Journal of Biology
Cancer is the second cause of death in Turkey and the frequency of cancer deaths increased from 12% in 2002 to 21% in 2009 ( Özkan et al., 2013). To win the war on cancer, we certainly need to apply well-planned prevention policies, given that it is caused mostly by environmental factors, and to develop more effective therapies. To achieve a cure for the disease, it is crucial to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms leading to cancer and to therapeutically target all the factors playing a role in the initiation, progression, maintenance, and relapse of the disease, preferably in …

Epigenetics: The Guardian Of Pluripotency And Differentiation, Marta Gladych, Aleksandra Nijak, Paula Lota, Urszula Oleksiewicz
Turkish Journal of Biology
Multicellular organisms comprise a variety of cell types that have the same genotype but distinct phenotypes. This diversity is possible because of the establishment of a specific epigenetic landscape that stabilizes gene expression profiles that are exclusive for a particular cell type. Accumulating data indicate that the maintenance, loss, and reacquisition of pluripotency are dynamically regulated by epigenetic alterations evoked by a subset of cellular factors. A better understanding of the epigenetic mechanisms involved in stem cell biology and differentiation will improve our ability to use these cells in the clinical context. Here we review current insights into the epigenetic …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Throughout its half a century of development, stem cell research has included two main fields: embryonic stem (ES) cell research and the reprogramming of body somatic cells. In the present review we focused on stem cell reprogramming and its relation with otolaryngology. The human body somatic cells are transformed into pluripotent cells by three basic methods: the somatic nuclear transfer method, the somatic cell fusion method (getting cellular pluripotent capacity in cellular reprogramming), and by transcription factors influencing the body somatic cells to generate reprogrammed induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. ES cells and iPS cells have pluripotency and differentiate into …
Human Embryonic Stem Cell N-Glycan Features Relevant To Pluripotency, Sabi̇re Karaçali
Human Embryonic Stem Cell N-Glycan Features Relevant To Pluripotency, Sabi̇re Karaçali
Turkish Journal of Biology
Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and reprogrammed human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) proliferate indefinitely in the undifferentiated state (self-renewal) and differentiate into the three germ layers (and ultimately into all cell types) (pluripotency). Branching in the N-glycan core of hESCs/hiPSCs is limited. hESCs/hiPSCs have high mannose-type and biantennary complex-type core structures, indicating immature stages of N-glycoproteins. The two branches on the core consist of type 2 N-acetyllactosamine (LacNAc), completed mainly with α 2,6-linked sialic acid. Complex terminal fucosylation, particularly α 1,2-linked fucosylation, is another characteristic N-glycosylation feature of hESCs/hiPSCs. All of these structural features are probably associated with the …

Comparison Of Enzymatic And Nonenzymatic Isolation Methods For Endometrial Stem Cells, Polen Koçak, Serli̇ Cani̇kyan, Meli̇ke Batukan, Rukset Attar, Fi̇kretti̇n Şahi̇n, Di̇lek Telci̇
Turkish Journal of Biology
Human endometrial stem cells (hESCs) are mesenchymal stem cells, which are responsible for the monthly renewal of the basal layer of the human endometrium by facilitating stromal and vascular regeneration. In this study, hESCs were isolated by using three different isolation methods including nonenzymatic and enzymatic digestion with trypsin and collagenase type 1. To determine the efficiency of these three methods, cells were characterized using a cell proliferation assay and mesenchymal and hematopoietic stem cell markers. Our results demonstrate that although the nonenzymatic isolation method gave rise to hESCs that had a higher proliferative rate, the mesenchymal stem cell profiles …

Analysis Of Global Micrornaome Profiles Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Oocytes And Early Embryos, Selen Güçlü Durgun, Ahmet Raşi̇t Öztürk, Arzu Atalay
Turkish Journal of Biology
One of the most complex cell transformations in biology is the remodeling of a fertilized oocyte into a totipotent zygote. There is no transcription during this event, and therefore mRNAs and proteins accumulated in the oocyte during oogenesis are utilized until zygotic genome activation. In order to differentiate into somatic cells, the embryo must erase the totipotency signature coming from the oocyte cytoplasm in the somatic blastomeres. In this study, the microRNAome profiles of oocytes and early embryos before and after zygotic genome activation were identified. By using next-generation high-throughput pyrosequencing and miRNA microarray techniques, miRNAome profiles of Caenorhabditis elegans …
Using Topic Modelling Algorithms For Hierarchical Activity Discovery, Eoin Rogers, John D. Kelleher, Robert J. Ross
Using Topic Modelling Algorithms For Hierarchical Activity Discovery, Eoin Rogers, John D. Kelleher, Robert J. Ross
Conference papers
Activity discovery is the unsupervised process of discovering patterns in data produced from sensor networks that are monitoring the behaviour of human subjects. Improvements in activity discovery may simplify the training of activity recognition models by enabling the automated annotation of datasets and also the construction of systems that can detect and highlight deviations from normal behaviour. With this in mind, we propose an approach to activity discovery based on topic modelling techniques, and evaluate it on a dataset that mimics complex, interleaved sensor data in the real world. We also propose a means for discovering hierarchies of aggregated activities …

A Corpus Of Annotated Irish Traditional Dance Music Recordings: Design And Benchmark Evaluations, Pierre Beauguitte, Bryan Duggan, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
An emerging trend in music information retrieval (MIR) is the use of supervised machine learning to train automatic music transcription models. A prerequisite of adopting a machine learning methodology is the availability of annotated corpora. However, different genres of music have different characteristics and modelling these characteristics is an important part of creating state of the art MIR systems. Consequently, although some music corpora are available the use of these corpora is tied to the specific music genre, instrument type and recording context the corpus covers. This paper introduces the first corpus of annotations of audio recordings of Irish traditional …

Modeling Mental Workload Via Rule-Based Expert System: A Comparison With Nasa-Tlx & Workload Profile, Lucas Rizzo, Sarah Jane Delany, Pierpaolo Dondio, Luca Longo
Conference papers
In the last few decades several fields have made use of the construct of human mental workload (MWL) for system and task design as well as for assessing human performance. Despite this interest, MWL remains a nebulous concept with multiple definitions and measurement techniques. State-of-the-art models of MWL are usually ad-hoc, considering different pools of pieces of evidence aggregated with different inference strategies. In this paper the aim is to deploy a rule-based expert system as a more structured approach to model and infer MWL. This expert system is built upon a knowledge-base of an expert and transates into computable …

Kicm: A Knowledge-Intensive Context Model, Fredrick Mtenzi, Denis Lupiana
Conference papers
A context model plays a significant role in developing context-aware architectures and consequently on realizing context-awareness, which is important in today's dynamic computing environments. These architectures monitor and analyse their environments to enable context-aware applications to effortlessly and appropriately respond to users' computing needs. These applications make the use of computing devices intuitive and less intrusive. A context model is an abstract and simplified representation of the real world, where the users and their computing devices interact. It is through a context model that knowledge about the real world can be represented in and reasoned by a context-aware architecture. This …

Successful Aging In Oldest-Old Adults: Role Of Physical And Social Factors, Katie Elizabeth Stanko
Successful Aging In Oldest-Old Adults: Role Of Physical And Social Factors, Katie Elizabeth Stanko
LSU Master's Theses
Successful aging, increasing in chronological age while maintaining health, is related to a multitude of factors including social and physical behaviors. Older adults may report that they are aging successfully while biomedical outcomes suggest otherwise. In the present study, sociodemographic characteristics, social engagement, physical activity in relation to frailty and health-related quality of life (HR QoL) were examined using a lifespan sample of adults (N = 732) from the Louisiana Healthy Aging Study (LHAS). Four age groups were compared: younger (21-44 years), middle-aged (45-64 years), older (65-84 years), and oldest-old adults (85 to 101 years). A main effect of age …
Initial Development And Validation Of The Student Wellbeing Teacher-Report Scales, Anthony Joseph Roberson
Initial Development And Validation Of The Student Wellbeing Teacher-Report Scales, Anthony Joseph Roberson
LSU Master's Theses
Given that youth mental health is associated with their success in school and in life more broadly, it is important that school-based psychological service providers embrace best-practice prevention and intervention strategies that target mental health when working with student populations. One line of study in this area has begun exploring the incorporation of a dual-factor model of mental health within universal screening systems in schools. The dual-factor model is differentiated from the traditional unidimensional mental health model, which focuses on the presence or absence of psychopathology, by conceptualizing mental health alternatively as consisting of both psychopathology and wellbeing dimensions. The …
Source Mechanism Analysis Of Single-Well Microseismic Data Using Full-Wavefield Moment Tensor Inversion, Trudy Watkins
Source Mechanism Analysis Of Single-Well Microseismic Data Using Full-Wavefield Moment Tensor Inversion, Trudy Watkins
LSU Master's Theses
Receiver angular coverage of microseismic sources occurring during hydraulic fracturing treatments is an important factor to consider when interpreting moment tensor inversion results. A horizontal receiver array can provide greater angular coverage of vertical failure planes than a vertical receiver array. The source orientation can be accurately determined if the array samples both sides of the failure plane. However, the compensated-linear-vector-dipole (CLVD) mechanism can be overestimated by up to ~40% for double-couple (DC) sources and the isotropic mechanism can be overestimated by ~70% for CLVD sources. Source mechanism constraints on the moment tensor inversion are used to mitigate the lack …
Treatment Acceptability And Child Discipline: The Influence Of Parent Factors, Kasia Simone Plessy
Treatment Acceptability And Child Discipline: The Influence Of Parent Factors, Kasia Simone Plessy
LSU Master's Theses
The consideration of parents’ acceptance of child discipline methods is important when developing culturally sensitive parent training programs, as treatment acceptability has been associated with treatment adherence and effectiveness. Past parent training research has primarily been conducted with middle-income, Caucasian mothers. The purpose of this study is to examine parents’ acceptance of five common discipline methods often used by or recommended to parents. To address the lack of research considering parental factors, this study examines the influence of gender, race, and income on parents’ acceptability ratings. Participants were 106 mothers from heterogeneous backgrounds. Acceptability ratings were measured using the Treatment …
Comparison Of Ignition Delays And Liquid Penetrations Of Jp-8, Synthetic Jp-8, And A Jp-8 Surrogate Under Diesel Engine Conditions, Kyle Yeakle
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The U.S. Army and many NATO affiliates have adopted a ‘one fuel forward fuel policy’ (OFF). The goal of the OFF policy is reducing the logistics and cost involved with providing fuel for military vehicles. With this policy, the logical choice fuel is military grade jet petroleum, JP-8, because of the fuel constraints of turbo-jet engines. This requirement has made it necessary to run military compression ignited engines on JP-8. To reduce the Army’s reliance on petroleum based fuels an alternative fuel, synthetic JP-8, derived from coal and made in the Fischer-Tropsch production method is allowed to be blended up …
Polychlorinated Biphenyl Compound And Metal Contamination And Remediation In Torch Lake, Houghton County, Mi, Ankita Mandelia
Polychlorinated Biphenyl Compound And Metal Contamination And Remediation In Torch Lake, Houghton County, Mi, Ankita Mandelia
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Torch Lake was subject to approximately 100 years of industrial pollution due to the dumping of waste associated with copper mining in the Keweenaw Peninsula, which lasted from approximately the 1860s through the 1960s. It is well-known that this waste included copper-containing mine tailings. What was less understood are the impacts of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and heavy metals besides copper on the lake system.
The objectives of this thesis are to summarize the status of contamination and remediation activities in Torch Lake and to estimate the magnitude of potential sources of PCBs to Torch Lake. First, a brief overview of …

Designing Better Symbols: An Attentional Approach To Match Symbols To Performance Goals, Hannah North
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Effective displays require symbol sets that are customized to specific tasks and performance goals. In order to create such sets, designers must account for the effects of top-down and bottom-up attention. The current work presents a pair of experiments that examined the effects of salience and cueing in a change detection tasks within the flicker paradigm (Rensink, O’Regan and Clark, 1997). Each trial, participants either received no cue or a cue indicating which symbol would be the target. This cueing manipulation isolated top-down effects to the cued condition. Consistent with previous studies (Orchard, 2012; Steelman, Orchard, Fletcher, Cockshell, Williamson & …

Comparisons Of Seismic Interferometry By Cross Correlation, Deconvolution, And Cross Coherence, Haitao Cao
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Ambient noise seismic interferometry (ANSI) has been applied widely for geophysical investigations including earthquake tomography, civil engineering and seismic exploration purposes. Comparing this approach with the traditional active seismic survey, the application of ANSI is cost effective, environmentally friendly and easily repeatable. Conventional seismic interferometry by cross correlating wavefields recorded at different receivers has already obtained fruitful results.
Even though the application of seismic interferometry (SI) by cross correlation has been successful, different methods for the processing workflow such as cross coherence and deconvolution have been conducted in an effort to improve the resolution. While these three methods have been …
