Laboratory Measurements Of Contact Nucleation By Mineral Dusts, Bacteria, And Soluble Salts, Joseph Niehaus
Laboratory Measurements Of Contact Nucleation By Mineral Dusts, Bacteria, And Soluble Salts, Joseph Niehaus
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
We present results from experiments that emulate atmospheric ice nucleation by aerosols. We have refined experimental techniques to improve measurements of ice forming nuclei in the contact mode. Our results show that atmospherically relevant dusts such as kaolinite, feldspar, rhyolitic ash, and Arizona Test Dust have efficiencies in the contact mode that are higher than the immersion mode. Experiments with bacteria show that biological material has the potential to contribute significantly to ice concentrations, but has large variability. By choosing a soluble compound as an ice nucleus, we are able to place bounds on the timescale for contact freezing and …
Testing Lidar-Radar Derived Drop Sizes Against In Situ Measurements, Mary Amanda Shaw
Testing Lidar-Radar Derived Drop Sizes Against In Situ Measurements, Mary Amanda Shaw
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
How well can a co-located lidar and radar retrieve a drop size distribution in drizzling clouds? To answer, we mimic scattering from a laboratory cloud to retrieve a lidar-radar effective diameter. Using only the shape parameter of the gamma-distributed drops, the mean diameter of the drops can be estimated from lidar-radar effective diameter to within a few percent of the true mean. In practice, the shape parameter of the gamma distribution is not known. To set bounds, mean diameters were calculated from the lidar-radar effective diameter using a range of in situ measured gamma shape parameters. The estimated means varied …
Analysis On The Performance Limitations Of An Interferometric Geolocation Device, Michael Witt
Analysis On The Performance Limitations Of An Interferometric Geolocation Device, Michael Witt
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
GPS is a critical tool often used in terrestrial location and navigation. However, GPS relies on a system of satellites in medium earth orbit and is prone to dropouts at higher latitudes, and may be susceptible to spoofing or other attacks. Thus, it is prudent to examine possible alternatives. Recently, star tracking has been of interest in global positioning. There are many implementations of a star tracker using an imaging-based optical system to capture star locations in order to estimate position using celestial navigation techniques. These imaging systems are performance limited by blurring imposed by atmospheric turbulence, platform jitter, and …
The Effect Of Posttranslational Modifications On Protein Aggregation, Morphology, And Toxicity, Mu Yang
The Effect Of Posttranslational Modifications On Protein Aggregation, Morphology, And Toxicity, Mu Yang
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Proteins are one of the most versatile macromolecules in the biological system. The function or activity of a protein highly depends on its 3D native structure. However, under stress, they are at risk of misfolding/aggregation, leading to formation of structures that can indicate loss of function or gain of toxicity. In severe cases, protein aggregation can result in many diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Due to the heterogeneous nature of cellular environment and protein molecules, mechanism of in vivo folding and related toxicity still remains elusive. To have a better understanding of …
A Characterization Of The Water Quality Conditions And Pollutant Loads In Surface Waters Near The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’S Combined Sewer System In Cleveland, Ohio, Nathan Zgnilec
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD, Cleveland, OH) serves over one million citizens through the operation of three waste water treatment plants. NEORSD provides this service through combined and separated sewer systems, which, during rainfall events, are known to deliver large volumes of untreated wastewater containing high concentrations of Escherichia coli (E.coli), ammonia nitrogen, and phosphorus. NEORSD is currently investing $3 billion over the next 25 years to mitigate its combined sewer overflows and plans to allocate additional funds to improve remaining pollutant sources related to its system, e.g. separated sewers. A suite of PC-SWMM pollutant loading models have …

Clusivity In Presidential Discourse: A Rhetorical Discourse Analysis Of State-Of-The-Nation Addresses In Ghana And The United States, Stephen K. Dadugblor
Clusivity In Presidential Discourse: A Rhetorical Discourse Analysis Of State-Of-The-Nation Addresses In Ghana And The United States, Stephen K. Dadugblor
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This thesis examines the ways in which rhetors in presidential discourse simultaneously associate with and dissociate from their audiences in an attempt to consolidate power while subtly masking their actions. Drawing on comparative rhetoric and Andrus’ (2013) Rhetorical Discourse Analysis (RDA) that combines rhetoric and (critical) discourse analysis, I analyze the expressive values of selected lexical items, and the inclusive and exclusive uses of “we” in selected State of the Nation/Union Addresses in Ghana and the United States. I argue that presidents’ unique position during these speeches as both heads of nations and heads of their political parties presents a …
A Self-Normalizing Approach To The Specification Test Of Mixed Frequency Models, Henriette Groenvik
A Self-Normalizing Approach To The Specification Test Of Mixed Frequency Models, Henriette Groenvik
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
In econometrics and finance, variables are collected at different frequencies. If a higher frequency variable can help predict a lower frequency variable, it would be of interest to construct such regression models. One straightforward solution is to flat aggregate the higher frequency variable to match the lower frequency. However, flat aggregation may overlook useful information in the higher frequency variable. On the other hand, keeping all higher frequencies may result in overly complicated models. In literature, mixed data sampling (MIDAS) regression models have been proposed to balance between the two. In this thesis the mixed frequency models are addressed, and …
Numerical Modeling Of Ambient Noise Seismic Interferometry, Simisola M. Arogundade
Numerical Modeling Of Ambient Noise Seismic Interferometry, Simisola M. Arogundade
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
CO2 sequestration involves storing CO2 in a deep geological formation and may help to mitigate the increasing emission of carbon. To monitor the migration of injected fluid in the reservoir, seismic observations may be used to observe changes in reflection character. Conventional methods to image the subsurface, using active seismic measurements, with man-made sources, have been applied at a few test sites, and the use of passive measurements, with natural sources, has been considered as a probable cost-efficient method to monitor CO2 migration and leakage. This numerical modeling study examines the use of seismic interferometry to retrieve …
Finite Element Modeling Of Active And Passive Behavior Of The Human Tibialis Anterior: A Preliminary Approach, David Joda
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This research project serves as exploratory work in the field of computational human biomechanics. A connection between muscular force and intramuscular pressure (IMP) has been uncovered that could prove invaluable in medical diagnostics as a method to circumvent the use of electromyography.
Preliminary finite element simulations were conducted to model the human tibialis anterior muscle in passive lengthening and active contraction. These simulations, totaling over 50 unique runs, utilized a novel constitutive model developed within the IMP research group. Volumetric strain, reaction forces, and pressure gradients were compared to data acquired from ongoing in vivo human experiments. A mechanism for …
Effect Of Disulfide Bond Scrambling On Protein Stability, Aggregation, And Cytotoxicity, Colina Dutta
Effect Of Disulfide Bond Scrambling On Protein Stability, Aggregation, And Cytotoxicity, Colina Dutta
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Proteins are nano-machines that carry out majority of the cellular functions. Thermodynamically they are functional and stable within a very narrow range (1 kcal/mol). External perturbations in the form of pH change, thermal, or oxidative/reducing stress can destabilize the protein resulting in misfolding and aggregation. Prolonged environmental stress can affect the cells adaptive response resulting in loss of ability to refold or recycle proteins. This can lead to accumulation of misfolded or aggregated proteins within the cell. Such accumulation of aggregated proteins have been associated with neurodegenerative disorders such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and Alzheimer’s disease. There …

Inhibition Of Bacterial Growth And Prevention Of Bacterial Adhesion With Localized Nitric Oxide Delivery, Julia Osborne
Inhibition Of Bacterial Growth And Prevention Of Bacterial Adhesion With Localized Nitric Oxide Delivery, Julia Osborne
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Bacterial infections continue to be a problem at the site of an indwelling medical device, and over the years, various bacterial strains have become more resistant to current antibiotic treatments. Bacterial infection at an indwelling medical device can be dangerous and affect the performance of the medical device which can ultimately lead to the failure of the device due to bacterial resistance to treatment.
Nitric Oxide (NO) has been shown to possess antibacterial properties to prevent and inhibit bacterial growth. NO releasing coatings on indwelling medical devices could provide a reduction in bacterial infections that occur at the device site …

Comparison of predicted climate data with observed conditions revealed highly variable climate model error. The lake model validation was conducted using 10 lakes …
The Role Of Amino Acids In The Nitrogen Cycle Of Peatlands, Tia Scarpelli
The Role Of Amino Acids In The Nitrogen Cycle Of Peatlands, Tia Scarpelli
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Future release of carbon from peatlands in response to climate change may be impacted by nitrogen limitation. The current study considers the role of amino acids as a nitrogen source in peatlands. The total free amino acid (TFAA) concentration for peats ranged from 0-2.3 µM, and leucine was the primary contributor. The dominance of sedge or ericaceous shrub plant types did not significantly impact the TFAA pool. Ammonium concentrations were much greater than TFAA and nitrate concentrations. TFAA concentrations were greatest in spring and least in fall. The springtime maxima and summer decrease in concentrations were simulated in a modeling …
East-West Cultural Differences In Visual Attention Tasks: Identifying Multiple Mechanisms And Developing A Predictive Model, Yin Yin Tan
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Past research has identified East-West differences in visual attention associated with holistic versus analytic perception and reasoning strategies (Nisbett et al., 2001; Boduroglu et al., 2009). These cross-cultural differences might stem from several different mechanisms, which may include: interference suppression, response inhibition, attention to detail vs. object configuration, stimulus centrality vs. eccentricity, number of visual distractors (e.g., display set size or clutter), and others.
Although research has shown East-West differences, the results sometimes appear inconsistent with each other, or they lack clear predictions from underlying theories. For example, evidence of a preference for cluttered displays (Wang et al., 2012), evidence …

In Mapp v. Ohio, the U.S. Supreme Court extended the due process protections of the exclusionary rule to include all "constitutionally unreasonable searches" that were done without a basis of probable cause. In the seven years after Mapp, when homicide rates in the U.S. nearly doubled, riots broke out in at least forty-seven U.S. cities. During the same era, a heroin epidemic gripped the nation's urban centers, giving rise to street drug markets and associated violence and pressures on law enforcement to curb those markets. As violence increased, a turn in the nation's political culture questioned Mapp's restraints on …
Preserving The Corporate Superego In A Time Of Activism: An Essay On Ethics And Economics, John C. Coffee Jr.
Preserving The Corporate Superego In A Time Of Activism: An Essay On Ethics And Economics, John C. Coffee Jr.
Faculty Scholarship
This essay focuses on the impact of recent changes in corporate governance on ethical behavior within the public corporation. It argues that a style of corporate behavior – one characterized by a risk tolerant, even reckless, pursuit of short-term profits and a disregard for the interests of non-shareholder constituencies – is attributable in significant part to recent changes in corporate governance, including the rise of hedge fund activism, greater use of incentive compensation, and the appearance of blockholder directors. It then surveys feasible responses intended to strengthen the role of the boards as the corporation’s conscience and superego. Given the …
A Machine Learning Classifier For Corporate Opportunity Waivers, Gabriel V. Rauterberg, Eric L. Talley
A Machine Learning Classifier For Corporate Opportunity Waivers, Gabriel V. Rauterberg, Eric L. Talley
Faculty Scholarship
Rauterberg & Talley (2017) develop a data set of “corporate opportunity waivers” (COWs) – significant contractual modifications of fiduciary duties – sampled from SEC filings. Part of their analysis utilizes a machine learning (ML) classifier to extend their data set beyond the hand-coded sample. Because the ML approach is likely unfamiliar to some readers, and in the light of its great potential across other areas of law and finance research, this note explains the basic components using a simple example, and it demonstrates strategies for calibrating and evaluating the classifier.

Artistic Drawing As A Mnemonic Device, Leslie Michelle Baker Christensen
Artistic Drawing As A Mnemonic Device, Leslie Michelle Baker Christensen
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Despite art-based learning being widely used, existing data are primarily qualitative, and most research has not isolated particular variables such as memory for empirical study. The few experiments that have been conducted demonstrated that drawing improves free recall of unpaired words, and retention improves after lessons integrated with drawing, drama, and narrative exercises. To help fill the gap in the current literature, the present study compared the effectiveness of encoding and the rate of memory decay between a drawing mnemonic and note taking on a paired associates task. Using a within-subjects experimental design, participants were presented with word pairs and …
Psychoneuroimmunology: Enhancing Treatment Efficacy And Reducing Sexual Offender Recidivism In Court-Mandated Treatment, Cameron F. Zeidler
Psychoneuroimmunology: Enhancing Treatment Efficacy And Reducing Sexual Offender Recidivism In Court-Mandated Treatment, Cameron F. Zeidler
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Despite astronomical costs, state-funded sex offender treatment has a sole purpose of protecting communities at large. Designed to treat sexual psychopaths, costly state risk management programs are required to use traditional, outdated treatment models, which lack empirical support, lack published research, and lack curricula written at the seventh grade reading level. Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) eagerly proves to be a new modality for Psychoeducation (PE) enhancing treatment efficacy and reducing offender recidivism in court-mandated treatment. The distinction in the present study is the difference between PE alone (control group) and PE with PNI (experimental group). Specifically, this study investigated the extent to …
