Turkish Journal of Zoology

The blotched snake (Elaphe sauromates) is one of the most elusive species of snakes in Romania, and only a small number of individuals have ever been found, which is why morphological data are both scarce and over half a century old. The data gathered from the individuals captured during our field work confirmed the presence of sexual dimorphism (significant for SVL/TL ratios) and presented a greater morphological variation than recorded in the scientific literature. Individuals examined usually had more than 2 rows of temporal scales and displayed variation in subocular scales, as opposed to the information previously available, hinting at …

Current Invasions Of East Asian Cyclopoids (Copepoda, Cyclopoida)In Europe: New Records From Eastern Ukraine, Elena Anufriieva, Nickolai Shadrin

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The East Asian freshwater cyclopoid copepods Mesocyclops pehpeiensis (Hu, 1943) and Eucyclops roseus Ishida, 1997, which are new for Europe, were recorded from samples collected in the water bodies of the city of Lugansk, eastern Ukraine. In 2012 the same species of cyclopoids, new or rare for Europe, were found in Crimean ponds where there is no human agency that could lead to introductions of alien species. Long-distance transportation by birds, probably, is the more plausible explanation for their appearance in Lugansk. These alien species were found in newly formed water bodies without stable communities, which may serve as a …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, Yucca schidigera powder (YSP) added to lamb feed was investigated for its effects on performance, some blood parameters, the immune system, and the antioxidative metabolism of the hepatic tissue. Throughout a 10-week fattening period, twenty-four 2.5-month-old male Akkaraman lambs were used. Three groups were established, including a control group © and groups YSPI and YSPII, which received a basal ration alone, a basal ration + 100 ppm YSP, and a basal ration + 200 ppm YSP, respectively. The groups did not differ for performance parameters (P > 0.05). While 100 ppm YSP increased serum NH3 levels (P < 0.05), 200 ppm YSP significantly decreased serum cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and Mg levels (P < 0.05). The groups did not differ for antibody titers against the Brucella melitensis vaccine (Rev 1). In groups YSPI and YSPII, hepatic CAT activity and LPO levels were significantly lower than those of Group C (P < 0.01). While the GSH levels of group YSPI were significantly higher than those of groups C and YSPII, the SOD activity of group YSPII was significantly lower than those of groups C and YSPI (P < 0.01). As a result, while YSP did not affect the performance parameters or immune system, it significantly affected NH3 levels, lipid metabolism, and the antioxidant system.

Although their action in antagonizing arachidonic acid metabolism is a key antiinflammatory effect of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), these molecules have other antiinflammatory effects that might occur upstream of altered eicosanoid production. We examined the effects of two CLA isomers (c9,t11 and t10,c12 isomers), n-3 PUFA (EPA and DHA), and ΚNF-ΚB inhibitor (ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC)) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced secretion of prostaglandins (PGE2 and PGF2a) by bovine endometrial (BEND) cells. LPS increased PGE2 and PGF2a concentrations in BEND cell-conditioned media in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. The c9,t11 CLA isomer and EPA decreased …
