Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Adults Who Stutter: A Qualitative Study, Emilie Scharf Dec 2016

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Adults Who Stutter: A Qualitative Study, Emilie Scharf

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Stuttering is a phenomenon that affects millions of people worldwide, and up until now the disorder has most often been portrayed in a negative light. The purpose of this study is to understand the lived experiences of young adults who stutter, framing the research with more holistic perspective. Two participants will be interviewed in depth using a qualitative research approach to explore what it is like to live with stuttering and how it has affected their daily lives. Literature to date tends to group people who stutter into quantitative studies that problematize the disorder (Blood, G., Blood, I.M., Maloney, K., …

Computing Planarity In Computable Planar Graphs, Patrick Mcmillan Dec 2016

Computing Planarity In Computable Planar Graphs, Patrick Mcmillan

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

We use methods from computability theory to answer questions about infinite planar graphs. A graph is computable if there is an algorithm, which decides whether given vertices are adjacent. Having a procedure for deciding the edge set might not help compute other properties or features of the graph, however. The goal of this paper is to investigate the extent to which features related to the planarity of a graph might or might not be computable. We propose three definitions for what it might mean for a computable graph to be computably planar and for each build a computable planar graph …

Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Activation Enhances Total Iga Secretion In Leishmania Major-Infected Mice, Madeline Metten Dec 2016

Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Activation Enhances Total Iga Secretion In Leishmania Major-Infected Mice, Madeline Metten

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Secretory IgA (antibody A) plays a critical role in neutralizing microbial toxins, regulating non-pathogenic gut microbe populations, and protecting against infections at mucous membranes, like the airways or gut. Altered IgA levels have been associated with increased risk of allergies, infection, and autoimmunity. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a regulator of immune function, including IgA levels. Chemicals in food or the environment can affect IgA levels, and this has been proposed as a risk factor for human disease. In mice, activation of the AhR with a single dose of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), an environmental pollutant, has been shown to alter …

Language Policy And The Preparedness Of Mainstream Teachers For Serving Els In K-12 Classrooms, Laureen A. Fregeau, Robert D. Leier Dec 2016

Language Policy And The Preparedness Of Mainstream Teachers For Serving Els In K-12 Classrooms, Laureen A. Fregeau, Robert D. Leier

TAPESTRY

English language learners (ELs) numbers are increasing steadily in classrooms across the United States. Some southeastern states have seen more than a 200% EL student increase in recent years (Migration Policy Institute, 2010). Since the inception of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and especially since Title I “flexibility” revisions, responsibility for educating ELs has shifted from ESOL and bilingual teachers to primarily mainstream teachers. States that have opted out of NCLB under flexibility revisions are no longer as accountable to the U. S. Department of Education for the education of ELs. States and school districts are no longer required to …

An Esol Curricular Model: Infuse Esol Standards In Teacher Education, Deborah L. Wheeler, Jane M. Govoni

TAPESTRY

Florida approved teacher preparation programs provide coursework in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) based on a mandate that began for graduates in 2004; however, there are few studies on the effects of an ESOL integrated model. The data show that an ESOL-infused program effectively prepares teacher candidates in demonstrating ESOL standards. The data were applied to a Likert scale and the results revealed that the program ranked between the ranges of average and exceeds expectations. The results will foster further research on a larger scale on ways to effectively prepare teacher candidates to work with English learners (ELs).

Accommodations And English Learners: Inconsistencies In Policies And Practice, Florin M. Mihai, N. Eleni Pappamihiel

TAPESTRY

This article outlines the results of a survey of all the large-scale testing accommodations used with English learners across the United States, addressing the increasing challenge of integrating this population into a state’s accountability system in a valid and reliable manner. This examination of accommodation policies used in standardized content area assessments reveals that there is little consistency across states with regard to testing accommodations for ELs in providing accommodations when ELs are tested in academic content areas.

Toward Integrative Call: A Progressive Outlook On The History, Trends, And Issues Of Call, Kasumi Yamazaki

TAPESTRY

With the advancement of technology now allowing complex and intricate simulation gaming and virtual reality (VR), current trends and issues in language learning extend their research on the topic of digital literacy, aiming to find the ways in which the use of technology fosters, or perhaps hinders, overall performance of language learning. While there have been many published articles that claim the successful utilization of technology and digital media into the classroom, there are considerably few that deliver a successful integration of theory into practice. To address this issue, this paper provides a historical review of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), …

Problems And Possibilities: Emergent Bilinguals And Multimodalities, Kathy Marie Bussert-Webb Dec 2016

Problems And Possibilities: Emergent Bilinguals And Multimodalities, Kathy Marie Bussert-Webb

TAPESTRY

This commentary and review focuses on my teaching and research experiences with Mexican-heritage youths in the lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, alongside Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico. Most of these youths were emergent bilinguals of poverty. I argue that high-stakes testing environments limited their experiences in diverse sign systems, including technology, in and out of school. These youths engaged in entertainment and friendship uses of technology outside of school, even though most had access to up-to-date digital tools at home for more higher-order technology use. They did not appear to have mentors or teachers who taught them to use …

Multiliteracy In Three English As A Second Language (Esl) Middle School Classrooms, Elena Andrei

TAPESTRY

This study investigated the teaching of multiliteracy in three middle school English as a Second Language Arts classrooms. The research question was: How are English learners (ELs) developing multiliteracy - defined as critical literacy, electronic literacy, and socio-cultural literacy, if at all, in middle school ESL Language Arts classrooms? Collected data consisted of classroom observations, transcribed teacher and focus student interviews; copies of teacher and student artifacts such as handouts and student notebooks. The findings of the study suggest that teachers did not teach all aspects of multiliteracy and the students seemed to be developing mostly electronic literacy, but not …

Microblogging: Using Digital Literacies To Engage Middle School English Learners, Carolyn J. Stufft, Susan Casey

TAPESTRY

As a result of the changing technologies associated with the 21st century, the definition of literacy has changed and expanded (Antonacci & O’Callaghan, 2011) to encompass e-books, text messages, blogs, and even videogames and the peripheral literacies associated with gaming. These new literacies have demonstrated promise for engaging students in literate practices (Gee, 2007; Gerber, 2009). One practice in particular, microblogging, provides a way to engage English learners in writing and responding to text. Microblogging is a participant web technology that allows users to interact and share information in succinct online posts (Hricko, 2010). For middle school English learners, microblogging …

The Ribbed Drapery Of The Puerto Princesa Underground River (Palawan, Philippines): Morphology And Genesis, Paolo Forti, Giovanni Badino, Jose Maria Calaforra, Jo De Waele

International Journal of Speleology

During the 2011 speleological expedition to the Puerto Princesa Underground River (Palawan, Philippines) a drapery characterized by several close-to-horizontal ribs has been noticed. Even without sampling and analyzing its internal growth layers, a detailed morphological study allowed to present a possible genetic model. The presented model helps to explain its evolution, which is mainly controlled by variation in water flow as a consequence of the Palawan climate. When validated by further analyses, the same genetic mechanism could define also the evolution of the very common but still unexplained complex flowstones, which exhibit several close-to-horizontal steps, widenings and narrowings along their …

A modelling instrument was built that is able to semi-automatically set up a (steady-state or transient) groundwater model. With a given model area and modelling period, the instrument is able to select the appropriate hydrogeology data and boundary conditions, and to build a Modflow groundwater model. The river and drainage boundary conditions are selected from a PostgreSQL/PostGis database, which has been built with surface water data from various data sources using open source tools like the PostGis geoprocessing functions and the Python programming language.

The basic surface water data cover the area of the Flemish Groundwater Model, which covers Flanders …

Cmf - An Open Source Hydrological Modelling Toolkit, Philipp Kraft, Hans-Georg Frede, Lutz Breuer

Open Water Journal

In the past four decades, hundreds (if not thousands) of hydrological models have been developed to predict the transfer of water through landscapes. Despite this variety of models, the basic challenge for all kind of models is the same: solve the dynamic local to global water mass balance of a landscape. However, the transport processes, surface flow, subsurface flow, snow drift, evaporation and transpiration can be modelled with differing complexity, theory and parameterizations. Clark et al. (2011) denote, that a hydrological model is therefore not one hypothesis of process behaviour, but a multitude of interconnected hypotheses, which remain untested, since …

A shallow water table can significantly affect soil infiltration and surface runoff during a rainfall event. Simple and robust models used as components of larger scale hydrological models are needed to analyze the impacts of shallow water table in the landscape. Salvucci and Entekhabi (1995) and Chu (1997) proposed an approximate non-uniform Green-Ampt time-implicit integral form solutions to the infiltration case for ponded soils bounded by a water table under initial hydrostatic equilibrium.

From a hydrological modellers perspective, large river basins are complex systems with several generalisable attributes. Unfortunately, some river basins have very unique features that challenge models and their developers or users, respectively. Heavily modified basins are one example. In this case it is often necessary to incorporate impoundments by dams and reservoirs or to account for water withdrawals directly from the river or from groundwater for agricultural, industrial or domestic uses. Water allocation within the catchment, from another basin into the catchment under study or vice versa can also be an issue that complicates the modelling task. Some river basins …

Hydrological GIS data are widely used by public organizations, environment, water supply and water treatment companies. Water data analysis can be very specific, and is not a GIS-only field.

It is therefore interesting to look at FOSS4G applications, to see how they fit the need to have a real FOSS4G stack for water-related data handling and analysis.

Classical mathematical models and methods have been constantly applied to solve different hydrological problems, especially for water flux processes description. The Catchment Modeling Framework (CMF) is an open source, modular and expandable platform which has been created to simulate the water balance from plot to landscape scale. CMF consists of several modules, each applied for specific flux-processes depending on different parameters or dimensions. The CMF expandability allows applying hydrological model structures that fit best the current context.
