Mode-Sum Prescription For The Vacuum Polarization In Odd Dimensions, Peter Taylor, Cormac Breen Dec 2016

Mode-Sum Prescription For The Vacuum Polarization In Odd Dimensions, Peter Taylor, Cormac Breen

Articles

We present a new mode-sum regularization prescription for computing the vacuum polarization of a scalar field in static spherically-symmetric black hole spacetimes in odd dimensions. This is the first general and systematic approach to regularized vacuum polarization in higher dimensions. Remarkably, the regularization parameters can be computed in closed form in arbitrary dimensions and for arbitrary metric function $f(r)$. In fact, we show that in spite of the increasing severity and number of the divergences to be regularized, the method presented is mostly agnostic to the number of dimensions. Finally, as an explicit example of our method, we show plots …

New Bounded Backstepping Control Designs For Time-Varying Systems Under Converging-Input-Converging-State Conditions, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Jerome Weston Dec 2016

New Bounded Backstepping Control Designs For Time-Varying Systems Under Converging-Input-Converging-State Conditions, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Jerome Weston

Faculty Publications

We provide new asymptotically stabilizing backstepping controls for time-varying systems in a partially linear form. Instead of measuring the full current state, our main feedback design uses several time lagged values of a function of the state of the nonlinear subsystem, and has no distributed terms. Other advantages are that we do not require differentiability of the available nominal controls for the nonlinear subsystems, and that our controls do not contain Lie derivatives. This improves on a recent work in Automatica that covered the special case where the linear part has one integrator, since we now allow an arbitrary number …

New Prediction Approach For Stabilizing Time-Varying Systems Under Time-Varying Input Delay, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff Dec 2016

New Prediction Approach For Stabilizing Time-Varying Systems Under Time-Varying Input Delay, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff

Faculty Publications

We provide a new sequential predictors approach for the exponential stabilization of linear time-varying systems with pointwise time-varying input delays. Our method circumvents the problem of constructing and estimating distributed terms in the stabilizing control laws, and allows arbitrarily large input delay bounds. We illustrate our method using a pendulum dynamics.

Using Technology And Media-Rich Platforms To Help Teach The Pythagorean Theorem, Hui Fang Huang Su, Denise Gates, Janice Haramis, Farrah Bell, Claude Manigat, Kristin Hierpe, Lourivaldo Da Silva

Transformations

The history of mathematics is quite extensive, dating back to ancient times and elapsing several centuries. Many great mathematicians, philosophers, scientists, and scholars have contributed to mathematics on the subject we see today. For the purpose of this research project, we have chosen to highlight the great mathematician Pythagoras and his famous Pythagorean Theorem. We investigate the history of the Pythagorean Theorem, relationships among Pythagorean numbers, and unusual proofs of the Theorem. This paper provides a suggestive lesson plan, activity, and presentation for classroom use.

Episode Of Intense Chemical Weathering During The Termination Of The 635 Ma Marinoan Glaciation, Kang Jun Huang, Fang Zhen Teng, Bing Shen, Shuhai Xiao, Xianguo Lang, Hao Ran Ma, Yong Fu, Yongbo Peng

Faculty Publications

Cryogenian (∼720-635 Ma) global glaciations (the snowball Earth) represent the most extreme ice ages in Earth's history. The termination of these snowball Earth glaciations is marked by the global precipitation of cap carbonates, which are interpreted to have been driven by intense chemical weathering on continents. However, direct geochemical evidence for the intense chemical weathering in the aftermath of snowball glaciations is lacking. Here, we report Mg isotopic data from the terminal Cryogenian or Marinoan-age Nantuo Formation and the overlying cap carbonate of the basal Doushantuo Formation in South China. A positive excursion of extremely high δ26Mg values (+0.56 to …

Higher Ed Needs New Forms Of Marketing., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

In this day and age of crises – financial, enrollment,

even scandal – among institutions of higher education,

image “management” has become a tool to help

some institutions stay afloat. Countless colleges and

universities have resorted to spending money on

glossy brochures, billboards and even on expensive

TV airtime.

The images they portray are usually one of happy

and attractive students having fun on campus, enjoying

athletic events and amenities that used to be more

likely to be found at country clubs than colleges. The

quality of education is almost an afterthought. The

name of the institution is being sold …

“Goodness Itself Must Change” – Anthroponomy In An Age Of Socially-Caused, Planetary Environmental Change, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer

Faculty Scholarship

Given the reality of socially-caused, planetary-scaled, environmental change, how – if at all – should our ethical concepts change? It has been a hallmark of environmental literature in recent years to insist that they should or even must. It will be argued that, yes, our ethical concepts should change by exploring the changes needed for the core ethical concept of goodness. Goodness, it will be argued, must change to reflect a change in priority from personal intentions to the right relation between an agent and the collective to which he/she belongs. This relation, which is called herein the civic relation, …
