Highpower rockets are extremely sensitive systems that require precise planning, testing, and analysis in order to yield accurate results. Under the guidance of project advisor, Dan Larson, a highpower rocket was designed and built to reach an apogee of 3000 feet. Additionally, means of dual deployment was used in order to aid in the safe descent and recovery of the rocket. In order to meet this expectation, two parachutes were used in conjunction with black powder ejection charges. While the Civil War all but consumed Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, at least one other military matter caught his attention. The 1862 Dakota War in Minnesota resulted in the deaths of 358 white settlers, 106 United States soldiers, and 29 Dakota warriors. When the fighting ended hundreds of Indians were placed in prisoner camps, and after sham trials nearly 400 warriors were sentenced to death. Military leaders, politicians, and an enraged citizenry demanded that Lincoln order swift executions. ABSTRACT: Modern Greece has held a marginal existence in the study of nationalism, and yet there is a wealth of information that it provides, which can broaden our understanding of nationalism and state-building, especially in the Balkans. The purpose of this article is to examine the various facets of Greek identity during the outbreak of the independence movement, and how identity shaped and affected the movement itself. This article argues that Greek identity was too multifarious to create a strongly defined national identity. A world history analysis, this paper examines the struggle between Protestant governmental and Catholic private philanthropy in mid-nineteenth-century Ireland, exploring how each side waged a war of political and religious misunderstanding in an effort to gain control over the Catholic Irish poor. Ireland’s philanthropic scene in this period became a battleground on which the British government fought for political control and Catholics for religious control; however, neither group understood what the other fought for, waging a war of cross-purposes. Soft power, an international relations concept coined by Joseph Nye, has been used by the Russian Federation to change the political behavior of the Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. To accomplish this goal, Russia uses public diplomacy, which is used to attract the public and influence another state’s policies. Russia’s soft power strategy seeks to mobilize a single population rather than the general public. The Compatriot policy is a crucial component of Russia’s soft power policy. The archetype of classical Roman epic, Virgil’s Aeneid has enjoyed incredible literary attention since its appearance in the first century of the Common Era. More than eighty English translations of the Aeneid have been published since the beginning of the sixteenth century, and the task of the present article is to understand the place of modern-day translations within the context of such a tradition. The aim of this project in its entirety was to explore different ideas about what the intersection of art and science might look like. These ideas, including my own, are presented in the following essay. In addition to the essay portion of this project, I’ve explored creative writing through poetry in attempts to immerse myself in both sides of this debate, as my academic history leans more towards the scientific realm. In the poems I’ve also tried to include bits of science through metaphorical language. The four works I have chosen to include follow the essay.

Blood, Sweat, And Social Control: A Comparative Study Of Virginian And Jamaican Slavery, 1740-1820, Paul T. Knaak

This paper is a comparative study examining how slavery impacted Virginian and Jamaican society in the period 1740-1820. In both regions, slavery provided an important source of labor to facilitate intensive agriculture. However, differing geographic, demographic, and economic forces in Virginia and Jamaica served to forge two distinctly different slave societies. To explore how slavery impacted society in the two regions, and the tools slave-owners used to maintain control, the diaries of William Byrd of Virginia and Matthew Lewis of Jamaica are used. Wartime sexual violence is a critical human rights issue that usurps the autonomy of its victims as well as their physical and psychological safety. It occurs in both ethnic and non-ethnic wars, across geographic regions, against both men and women, and regardless of the “official” position of commanders, states, and armed groups on the use of rape as tactic of war. This honors thesis examines the evolution of the state and nation-building processes in four historical periods in Ethiopia. I argue that, in the generational efforts towards consolidation and change, each period throws up acute tensions between an increasingly centralizing political apparatus and the civic and material existence of ethnic peripheries. These contradictions are apparent in the attempts to secure the country's territorial sovereignty under Menelik II, the efforts towards modernization by Emperor Haile Selassie, the militaristic-cum-Marxist drive under Col. This research explores the methodology and application of photogrammetric and laser-scanning recording methods to a castle ruin, with the primary purpose of digitally preserving the castle. Both methods generated interactive 3D models via the combination of still images (photogrammetry) and precise laser measurements (laser-scanning), which were then combined into a single model. The case study is the medieval castle ruin Burg Hohenecken located in the city of Kaiserslautern in southwest Germany. The castle was active from 1212-1689, as one of over fifty castles within the region of the Pfalz. The inhabitants included the noble von Hoheneck family and various …

Film noir, a film genre characterized by darkness, femmes fatales, private detectives, and the inversion of traditional values, emerged in America in the 1940s-1950s. At the same time, a religious fervor was building in the United States. Why did a genre defined by dark crime and moral ambiguity hit its stride in the U.S. during a surge of Christianity? This presentation explores the Navy’s controversial use of radioactive materials in former decades on Treasure Island. It highlights the incomplete cleanup of contaminated soil and radioactive materials, and how current radiation measures are damaging to present-day residents’ health. Finally, it explains the city’s current plans for redeveloping the island, and how many public officials are ignoring the entire radiation problem, as long as other environmental issues Treasure Island residents face on a daily basis.

Totality And Infinity—Nationalism And The Face: An Ethnographic Exploration In The Republic Of Turkey And State Of Israel, Charles Phifer Nicholson Jr.

This paper argues that the historical roots and current manifestations of secular and religious nationalism in the Republic of Turkey and the State of Israel are well understood in light of Emmanuel Levinas’ concept of totality. Furthermore, as discovered through ethnographic research collected concerning the lived experiences of ethnic and religious minorities in these nations, it posits that the best response to these all-encompassing, exclusive worldviews is found in the reality of the human face, as conceptualized by Levinas in connection with his notion of infinity.

In the initial scoping phase of this research project, the main question I used for guidance was "to what extent and how did the Manhattan Project impact New Mexico and New Mexicans?" My first objective was to assess the magnitude of the state's transformation before addressing the other questions that soon ensued from this original reflection. A brief historical review of the state's transformation will introduce these questions, and comparing pre-World War II and post-Cold War New Mexico will justify the term "revolutionized" I used above.
