In this paper I defend Judith Jarvis Thomson's 'Good Samaritan Argument' (otherwise known as the 'feminist argument') for the permissibility of abortion, first advanced in her important, ground-breaking article 'A Defense of Abortion' (1971), against objections from Joseph Mahon (1979, 1984). I also highlight two problems with Thomson's argument as presented, and offer remedies for both of these problems. The article begins with a short history of the importance of the article to the development of practical ethics. This study investigates the known successes and and failures of New England seamen, second-hand poetry about women on land and men at sea, personal narratives of family members ashore, and the deeply intimate writings of men on sailing ships. Through official documentation and the productions of literary circles, it is possible to determine the relationship between the external and intrinsic motivations of men and their families to go to sea and stay at sea. This paper details the experience of two Irish academics as they engaged in Arts-Based Education Research (ABER). Between them both they have explored the following areas; an autoethnographic exploration of how experience of assessment throughout educational life can shape professional life and identity; an autoethnographic exploration of the notion of inclusion; an autoethnographic exploration of the transition into leadership; an autoethnographic exploration of being an academic in the Irish education system. Infection Of Mammalian Hepatocytes By Francisella Tularensis Lvs, Pavel Vasioutovitch

Francisella tularensis, the causative agent of Tularemia, is a facultative intracellular parasite. The goal of this project is to examine how F. tularensis infects and replicates within mammalian cells, and the impact of such an infection upon the signaling pathways within the host cell. The murine embryonic hepatocyte cell line TIB-73 serves as our model system for infection by F. tularensis live vaccine strain (LVS). The number of bacteria associated with hepatocytes was quantified via adhesion, invasion and intracellular replication assays. We have determined that a large multiplicity of infection (MOI) of F. tularensis LVS is required to infect …

Between 1936 and 1975, political and business leaders in Detroit tried to gain support for the financing and construction of a municipal stadium. The stadium plan originated as part of an attempt to bring the Summer Olympics to the city. The municipal stadium was to serve as the main Olympic stadium and be used for a variety of events after the Olympics were finished. Later, after Detroit leaders gave up on the Olympics after several failed bids, the stadium plan evolved into a domed facility on the downtown riverfront for the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, the city’s professional baseball …

This Article examines legal challenges confronting journalists who use drones to gather images. Initially, it traces the history of drones and the Federal Aviation Administration’s efforts to regulate them, as well as new state legislation that aims to restrict drones. This Article then illustrates that a wide array of legal remedies already exist for individuals harmed by journalistic drone usage, and it argues that calls for additional, piecemeal state laws to regulate drones are unnecessary and unduly hinder First Amendment interests in newsgathering and the public’s right to know. Using the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 opinion in Williams-Yulee v. Florida Bar as an analytical springboard, this Article examines the slipperiness — and sometimes fatalness — of the underinclusiveness doctrine in First Amendment free-speech jurisprudence. The doctrine allows lawmakers, at least in some instances, to take incremental, step-by-step measures to address harms caused by speech, rather than requiring an all-out, blanket-coverage approach. Yet, if the legislative tack taken is too small to ameliorate the harm that animates a state’s alleged regulatory interest, it could doom the statute for failing to directly advance it. This paper interrogates the linguistic grounding of battle rap in Afro-based cultural practices, and the transformative power the understated art form possesses within the African American community. An integral part of hip-hop from the beginning, 'battling' has grown into a distinct subculture in recent years. Because of its oft-unmitigated rawness, it is often viewed as a lesser artistic form that embodies the worst of the violence, misogyny and other societal ills that hip-hop is accused of promoting. This dissertation examines south Texas from 1915 to 1925 and covers four subjects: a government-sponsored worker program, ethnic employment agencies, the inclusion of Mexicans into the American Federation of Labor (AFL), and a mutual aid organization in San Antonio, Sociedad de la Union. The federal government's guest-worker program suspended portions of the Immigration Act of 1917 so that poor and illiterate Mexican immigrants could continue to enter the United States as inexpensive agricultural laborers during World War I. Ethnic employment agencies provided Mexican migrants with jobs in the United States, but often had to evade both federal and Texas regulations. …

Crowdwork, in which large numbers of workers find and perform paid tasks through online platforms, is a paradox. It can make job-matching and production processes more efficient, but it can also lead to a decline in labor standards. We seek to link ethical labor practices in virtual work with well-established notions of corporate social responsibility, that include concerns for worker well-being and fair treatment. We present a typology of trends in labour, and argue that the new phase of ‘crowdwork’ is distinct from previous eras of ‘industrial’ and ‘digital’ employment. Although the men returned to America externally fit and physically intact, internally the war still raged. Drawn into a nightmarish world thousands of miles from home, the American World War I veteran endured the carnage, chivalrously defeating the evil attempting to permeate the world. The last four decades of research regarding the late prehistoric American Southwest has produced abundant evidence for violence, warfare and cannibalism among the Ancestral Puebloan peoples. Most archaeologists attribute this rise in violence and subsequent abandonment of the Four Corners region to degrading environmental conditions. While ecological factors surely contributed, it is hard to accept that this alone led to the extreme mutilation of hundreds of human remains found throughout the Pueblo territory. It is proposed that increasing social complexity along with new ritual practices resulted in intense and violent attacks throughout the Pueblo expanse.

This dissertation examines a postwar phenomenon that it describes as the secret camp myth. That myth arises from uncertainty about the fates of POWs and MIAs, and its advocates argue that the MIAs must survive in secret captivity after the war. This dissertation examines two historical examples of this phenomenon: West Germany following World War II, and the US after the Vietnam War. These two examples have been examined individually, but have not been compared extensively, and prior historiography has only examined each within the context of German and American histories of those wars. Engineering anti-toxin antibodies (Ab) is of public health interest for biodefense counter measurements. Ricin toxin is one example of a major biothreat agent that has currently no antidote. Ricin is a glycoprotein from the castor bean plant, Ricinus communis, and belongs to the medically important A-B toxin family that also includes Shiga, anthrax and cholera toxins. Ricin’s enzymatic subunit (RTA) is an RNA N-glycosidase that inhibits protein synthesis by irreversibly depurinating the 28S rRNA of the eukaryotic 60S ribosomal subunit.
