Paulo Freire (1973) articulated the notion of conscientization in his groundbreaking book Pedagogy of the Oppressed as the faculty of observing contradicting messages communicated by overarching power within societal, political, and economic structures and second, actively opposing oppression in those structures. Intercollegiate forensic competition is often the place where students are provided an outlet to achieve conscientization. The profound process or speaking problems into existence not only develops the competitor but provides a unique opportunity to spark further critical discussion. People often stigmatize individuals with mental illness (Corrigan, 2003; Weiss, 1994). The stigmatization of mental illness may be facilitated by socialization tools, such as the media, which send messages to the public that individuals with mental illness are fundamentally different and therefore should be excluded from the social majority (Klin & Lemish, 2008; Signorielli, 1989; Stout, Villegas, & Jennings, 2004). Understanding mental illness stigma as a social process may broaden theoretical understanding of how mental illness stigma develops and how it may be reduced. Recent investigations into ‘student geographies’ have recognised the complex ways in which students from different backgrounds go about ‘fitting in’ among their peers within universitymanaged accommodation. Halls have been characterised in the literature as highly pressurised spaces in which multiple (and potentially conflicting) identities can perpetuate disadvantage through incongruous accessibility to student-centric social activities and behaviours. This paper joins these debates by critically examining universities’ ‘Student Accommodation’ web pages alongside qualitative interviews in order to question notions of halls being inclusive and encouraging a cultural mix. Using Bourdieu’s reading of social capital this paper suggests that, while these spaces may …

This research represents the collaboration between Country Arts Western Australia (CAWA) and Edith Cowan University (ECU) to measure the intrinsic value of presenting cultural programs that have benefitted from the Royalties for Regions investment in regional WA. This investigation is informed by value-based methodologies. It has thus far involved developing data gathering instruments to measure the intrinsic value of cultural activities supported by CAWA in 2016 and test them in four of the nine regions of WA. However, the way in which visual arts curriculum is implemented in schools is largely left up to the individual states. This study focused on how art educators' design, direct, find support, and operate visual arts programs in the K-12 public school system in West Virginia. Ethnographic research methods were implemented for this study.

To introduce more chemistry into a middle and high school bioengineering camp experience, we developed an educational and entertaining presentation that examines the chemistry in movies about aliens and minerals from outer space. Our goal was to help the campers to think creatively about the bioengineering projects they are doing and about its chemistry. After watching each movie clip, we explain whether the chemistry in the clip is real or fake, and then describe the real chemistry that inspired it. This study endeavors to expand the discourse on adaptation to the modal transformation of literary works to music. This exploratory research focuses on the relationship between communication and identity transformation in the sojourner experience. It inquires the following: RQ1: How does communication affect the identity transformation process of sojourners? RQ2: How does identity transformation affect the way sojourners communicate? Ten participants from six countries were interviewed in a forty (40) minute interview session. A qualitative methodology with an open-minded exploratory approach using semi-structured questions to guide the interview was employed. A grounded-in-data coding and Owen’s criteria for identifying themes (Owen, 1984) was used to identify emerging themes and overlapping narratives. The study revealed five themes from the “living …

This thesis set out to explore embodiment, immersion, and personalities in massively multiplayer video games (MMOGs), in particular how players become immersed in a virtual world. Immersion is a focal point in the gaming experience in which players communicate directly with the digital medium. Scholarship has argued that games have specific immersive qualities that draw players into them including storytelling, social and emotional reasoning, among others (Calleja, 2011). In 2006 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Gardasil vaccine to assist in the protection from the Human Papillomavirus (HPV): The leading contributor to cervical cancer. After stressing the importance of the vaccine, but disregarding its inadequacies, young women were subjected to invasive and excessive protocols. This study utilizes autoethnographic methods to understand the psychological and social effects of the individuals who were diagnosed with HPV before the release of the Gardasil 9 vaccine in 2014 and forced to go through these unnecessary procedures before the medical field began adopting imperative changes to treatment.

In theatre scholarship, the event of the on-stage accident is a fairly neglected area of research. Aside from brief archival detailing of some of the more tragic events, scholars have not approached the accidents from a theoretical or historiographical position. Many, I surmise, find little of interest in an on-stage accident due to its lack of aesthetic purpose or intentionality. In this project, I focus on those neglected accidents and, more specifically, accidents that take place due to a violent failure of theatrical convention. Autism continues to be a growing concern in America and there is indication that the rate of autism among the sub-population of military dependent children is potentially higher than the general public. This hermeneutic phenomenological study focused on the concerns and experiences of parents of military families raising and educating their children with autism. Data was collected from nine military families across the United States. Six fathers and seven mothers participated through an initial questionnaire, interview, and a written reflective timeline. Findings demonstrated the stress, strain and sacrifice of families serving in the military with children with autism. Continuity of …

The recital was presented in two separate concerts: the first on October 22, 2015 at 7:30 pm, and the second on November 11, 2015 at 7:30 pm. Both concerts employed the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra, and the November concert also included the Northern Iowa Youth Orchestra. Federal and state law both provide a cause of action against inappropriate and unauthorized uses that ‘tarnish’ a trademark. Copyright owners also articulate fears of ‘tarnishing’ uses of their works in their arguments against fair use and for copyright term extension. The validity of these concerns rests on an empirically testable hypothesis about how consumers respond to inappropriate unauthorized uses of works. In particular, the tarnishment hypothesis assumes that consumers who are exposed to inappropriate uses of a work will find the tarnished work less valuable afterwards. That nineteenth-century female poets appropriated genre conventions for their own purposes is not a new idea; how and why they did so, though, are ongoing points of conjecture for feminist scholars. The following is an exploration of how the Victorian poet Julia Augusta Webster appropriated genre—more specifically the dramatic monologue and the closet drama—to advance her own feminist agenda and provoke social change, particularly with regard to the Victorian marriage institution.

Part I consists of a paired analysis of two lesser-known dramatic monologues by Webster, “Sister Annunciata” and “The Happiest Girl in the World.” Both works offer compelling critiques of …

Music education has been shown to be related to a variety of positive outcomes, including student achievement in math. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between music education and student achievement in math. The framework for the study was Miendlarzweska and Trost's model of musical instrument training. A deidentified archival data set consisting of middle school students' (N = 116) total math scores on the Iowa Assessments was used to determine the impact of music education on students' math achievement, while controlling for students' sex and socioeconomic status. This study investigated the role of both arts-integrated instruction (art activities as part of math instruction) and teacher immediacy (teacher caring behaviors) levels on students' math achievement. Although students from low socio-economic culturally diverse school districts have shown improvement in academic test scores, their scores are still significantly lower than scores of students from other school districts. Research has shown that when there is an increase in teacher immediacy, students' academic success increases. Elementary teachers in a school district in a western state expressed concerns about the reading achievement of students with disabilities (SWDs). SWDs were not developing decoding, comprehension, and fluency skills to become proficient readers. Without mastering these skills, SWDs will experience diminished academic attainment in their school career.
