An Empirical Examination Of Symptom Substitution Associated With Behavior Therapy For Tourette's Disorder, Alan L. Peterson, Joseph F. Mcguire, Sabine Wilhelm, John Piacentini, Douglas W. Woods, John T. Walkup, John P. Hatch, Robert Villarreal, Lawrence Scahill

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Over the past six decades, behavior therapy has been a major contributor to the development of evidence-based psychotherapy treatments. However, a long-standing concern with behavior therapy among many nonbehavioral clinicians has been the potential risk for symptom substitution. Few studies have been conducted to evaluate symptom substitution in response to behavioral treatments, largely due to measurement and definitional challenges associated with treated psychiatric symptoms. Given the overt motor and vocal tics associated with Tourette’s disorder, it presents an excellent opportunity to empirically evaluate the potential risk for symptom substitution associated with behavior therapy. The present study examined the possible presence …

What Difference Do Bystanders Make? The Association Of Bystander Involvement With Victim Outcomes In A Community Sample, Sherry L. Hamby, Marcela C. Weber, John H. Grych, Victoria Banyard

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: To fill gaps in the bystander literature by describing patterns of bystander involvement and associations between bystander involvement and victim outcomes across different types of emotional, physical, and sexual victimizations and to expand these considerations to a rural rather than urban sample. Method: Adults and adolescents (n = 1,703) were surveyed about bystander actions, bystander safety, and victim outcomes (injury, disrupted routine, fear level, and current mental health) for 10 forms of victimization. Results: Bystanders were present for roughly 2 thirds of most victimization types (59% to 67%), except sexual victimization (17%). Relatives were the most common bystanders of …

Strengths, Narrative, And Resilience: Restorying Resilience Research, Sherry L. Hamby, Victoria Banyard, John H. Grych Jan 2016

Strengths, Narrative, And Resilience: Restorying Resilience Research, Sherry L. Hamby, Victoria Banyard, John H. Grych

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: To envision a path toward a more strengths-based approach to violence research, prevention, and intervention—a path that focuses on thriving and resilience. Key Points: Both the content and the process of research need to change if we are to transform our efforts to understand and overcome adversity. Greater focus on strengths and the achievement of well-being despite adversity is 1 important avenue; focusing on the narrative and the power of story is another important path. However, merely shifting the focus of traditional research and scholarly efforts is not enough. At another level of analysis, the field needs communication across …

Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is an efficacious treatment with limited regional availability. As neurology and pediatric clinics are often the first point of therapeutic contact for individuals with tics, the present study assessed preliminary treatment response, acceptability, and feasibility of an abbreviated version, modified for child neurology and developmental pediatrics clinics. Fourteen youth (9-17) with Tourette disorder across 2 child neurology clinics and one developmental pediatrics clinic participated in a small case series. Clinician-rated tic severity (Yale Global Tic Severity Scale) decreased from pre- to posttreatment, z = –2.0, P < .05, r = –.48, as did tic-related impairment, z …

Telling Refugee Stories: Trauma, Credibility, And The Adversarial Adjudication Of Claims For Asylum, Stephen Paskey Jan 2016

Telling Refugee Stories: Trauma, Credibility, And The Adversarial Adjudication Of Claims For Asylum, Stephen Paskey

Journal Articles

When trauma survivors seek asylum in the United States, the deck is stacked against them. In most cases, the applicant’s story is the only direct evidence of the applicant’s claim, and asylum is certain to be denied if a judge finds the applicant not credible. But the stories told by trauma survivors defy cultural norms for a credible story: they are often inconsistent, vague, and both logically and chronologically disjointed. As a result, asylum may be wrongly denied. The problem is inherent in our asylum adjudication system, which subjects most applicants to an adversarial hearing.

A Content Analysis On Police Killings Of Unarmed Black Males: An Assessment On Experts' Quotes In National News Sources, Christopher Fulcher Jan 2016

A Content Analysis On Police Killings Of Unarmed Black Males: An Assessment On Experts' Quotes In National News Sources, Christopher Fulcher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

There is increasing concern in news media sources regarding police killings of unarmed Black males. However, there is limited research on the portrayal of such incidents in the news and the implications for police-community relations in African- American communities. In order to address this gap, this study analyzed 120 experts’ quotes provided by two of the largest and most respected newspapers in the United States -- the New York Times and USA Today. This research comprised a content analysis of quotes related to the deaths of Eric Garner (Staten Island, New York), Michael Brown (Ferguson, Missouri), and Freddie Gray (Baltimore …

A Case Study Of The Reported Use Of Metacognitive Reading Strategies By Postsecondary Instructors Of Developmental Reading Courses With Struggling Adult Readers To Increase Comprehension, Audrita Drayton Jan 2016

A Case Study Of The Reported Use Of Metacognitive Reading Strategies By Postsecondary Instructors Of Developmental Reading Courses With Struggling Adult Readers To Increase Comprehension, Audrita Drayton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This qualitative research study examined developmental reading instructors' reported use of metacognitive reading strategies as well as what other approaches they used to improve and increase the reading comprehension of their struggling adult readers. The researcher collected data using two interviews per participant and document analyses. Although studies have deemed metacognitive reading strategies effective in increasing the reading comprehension of struggling readers, the results indicated that the participants did not typically instruct their struggling adult readers in the use of metacognitive reading strategies. The implications for the study were related to instructional practice in developmental reading courses, policy changes, and …

A Network Of Ideas: Brokerage And Success Among Visual Artists In South Florida, Patricia Hoyos Jan 2016

A Network Of Ideas: Brokerage And Success Among Visual Artists In South Florida, Patricia Hoyos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study looks at artists’ careers as paths defined by their relative position in a dynamic professional network where innovation and creativity are highly regarded. Today, the theoretical and empirical study of networks has demonstrated that in some professions the individuals’ position in the network can facilitate or constrain their success. In studies about diffusion of information, for instance, some authors have found that individuals connected to a greater variety of sources are more creative and perform better. I explored this idea by looking at a network of visual artists and art institutions in Miami, and found a positive correlation …

Can I Ask For Help? The Relationship Among Incarcerated Males’ Sexual Orientation, Incarceration History, And Perceptions Of Rape In Prison, Mina Ratkalkar Jan 2016

Can I Ask For Help? The Relationship Among Incarcerated Males’ Sexual Orientation, Incarceration History, And Perceptions Of Rape In Prison, Mina Ratkalkar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In 2003, Congress passed the Prison Rape Elimination Act to address the problem of sexual violence in prison. Although research has shed light on the prevalence and incidence of sexual violence in U.S. prisons, few studies examine inmates’ perceptions of rape and safety from rape in prison. This study examined rape perceptions and the likelihood to seek mental health treatment in prison of three distinct groups of male inmates who are at greater risk of sexual victimization or exposure to sexual violence while incarcerated: gay and bisexual inmates, inmates with a juvenile incarceration history, and inmates who were first incarcerated …

Care At Work: A Feminist Analysis Of The Long-Term Care Industry In The United States, Rachel Tunick Jan 2016

Care At Work: A Feminist Analysis Of The Long-Term Care Industry In The United States, Rachel Tunick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This research provides a feminist perspective on the lowest paid sector of the United States long-term care industry, Certified Nursing Assistants. This research adds to current feminist scholarship on the modern professional caregiving industry by focusing on the perspective of the workers. As the population of older adults requiring care is expected to increase over the coming decades, the demand for paid caregivers will increase as well. Historically, care work was an expected duty done freely by the women of the family, but today much of the vital intimate caring labor is relegated to paid caregivers. I examine how alternative …

A Longitudinal Latent Profile Analysis Of Adolescent Popularity: A Test Of The Bistrategic Hypothesis, Amy C. Hartl Jan 2016

A Longitudinal Latent Profile Analysis Of Adolescent Popularity: A Test Of The Bistrategic Hypothesis, Amy C. Hartl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

As children enter adolescence, social status within the peer hierarchy gains importance. Variable-oriented research has linked adolescent popularity with both positive and negative adjustment outcomes. Popularity may be better understood with reference to types or subgroups of similar individuals, identified through person-oriented approaches. Resource Control Theory (RCT: Hawley, 1999) posits three distinct types of popular adolescents: coercive, prosocial, and bistrategic. The existence and adjustment correlates of the prosocial and coercive groups have been well-established, but little evidence supports the existence of a bistrategic popular group of adolescents, and even less is known about their adjustment correlates. The present study aims …

Allusions, Khaulah Naima Nuruddin Jan 2016

Allusions, Khaulah Naima Nuruddin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Allusions explores the volatile nature of intimate relationships by revisiting and recovering my memory of dramatic experiences in my own intimate relationships then translating them into painted psychological scenes. These scenes are activated by symbolically charged objects and interrupted by openings or portals serving as points of entry or exit. The people involved are referred to by pieces of carefully chosen furniture situated in a space that has shifting perspectives and illogical planes, referencing the complexity of memory and the subjectivity of experience. Discordant color, texture, and layered information are used to heighten the drama of the moment. These painted …

Can Priming A Firm’S Organizational Identity Overcome The Influences Of National Culture On Auditor Judgment?, Michael Killey Jan 2016

Can Priming A Firm’S Organizational Identity Overcome The Influences Of National Culture On Auditor Judgment?, Michael Killey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

A significant challenge faced by large auditing firms is offering consistent quality across the global network. Unfortunately, variation in judgments and decision-making, resulting from cultural differences, can undermine the provision of a uniform level of audit quality for these international firms. Previous research has determined that national culture influences an auditors’ professional judgments and decisions. Relying on Social Identity Theory, I explore whether inducing one’s organizational identification can both enhance auditor judgment and mitigate any deleterious impact that culture may have on the provision of a uniform level of audit quality. I also examine current cultural variations in auditor judgment …

Avatar Guided Stories Of Ease From Adolescents With Cancer, Laurie Ann Curnan Jan 2016

Avatar Guided Stories Of Ease From Adolescents With Cancer, Laurie Ann Curnan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The overall purpose of this mixed method study was to describe adolescents’ experiences of ease while enduring treatment for cancer. Specifically, the study used avatar image-guided story-sharing (AIGSS) to explore adolescent sense-of-self, experiences of feeling uneasy, descriptions of qualities of ease, and best places for finding ease during treatment. The innovative research approach used in this study incorporated avatar images representing ‘ease’ in typical environments. By testing a developmentally relevant approach, AIGSS, to explore ease for adolescents enduring cancer, this study addressed a pressing need for meaningful approaches to engage adolescents in health-related dialogue about what matters most. While 10 …

Assessing Processes Of Connection And Development In Observations Of The Therapeutic Relationship, Robert R. Freund

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The present study applies Driver and Gottman’s (2004a) Turning System to observations of the therapeutic relationship in a quasi-experimental between and within groups design. A sample of 63 full counseling sessions (21 first sessions with clients who return for four sessions, 21 first sessions for clients who terminate therapy prior to four sessions, and 21 fourth sessions) were collected from a university counseling center in South Florida. Clients and clinicians also completed self report evaluations of the therapeutic relationship that were also included in this study (Working Alliance Inventory – Short Form, and the Real Relationship Inventory). A series of …

Assessing Situations On Social Media: Temporal, Demographic, And Personality Influences On Situation Experience, David G. Serfass Jan 2016

Assessing Situations On Social Media: Temporal, Demographic, And Personality Influences On Situation Experience, David G. Serfass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Social media posts are used to examine what people experience in their everyday lives. A new method is developed for assessing the situational characteristics of social media posts based on the words used in these posts. To accomplish this, machine learning models are built that accurately approximate the judgments of human raters. This new method of situational assessment is applied on two of the most popular social media sites: Twitter and Facebook. Millions of Tweets and Facebook statuses are analyzed. Temporal patterns of situational experiences are found. Geographic and gender differences in experience are examined. Relationships between personality and situation …

Cognitive Dissonance And Auditor Professional Skepticism, Ruwan K. Adikaram Jan 2016

Cognitive Dissonance And Auditor Professional Skepticism, Ruwan K. Adikaram

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

I show that auditors experience cognitive dissonance when they fail to take appropriate professionally skeptical (hereafter PS) action in line with high PS judgment I specifically show that cognitive dissonance leads auditors to revise their attitudes on low ranking audit actions upward and lower their risk assessments, consequently, lower overall professional skepticism I also find that auditor cognitive dissonance leads to exaggerated ex-post auditor self-assessments professional skepticism Professional skepticism is fundamental to performing an audit according to auditing standards and critical to audit quality Extant research that investigates treatments to enhance professional skepticism predominantly treats both skeptical judgment and skeptical …

Coming Soon From A Screen Near You: The Camera’S Gaze In The Age Of Surveillance, Fayez Kloub Jan 2016

Coming Soon From A Screen Near You: The Camera’S Gaze In The Age Of Surveillance, Fayez Kloub

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Within the past thirty years, privacy concerns among American citizens are rising with counter-terrorist surveillance going beyond targeting people of interest. These concerns are reflected in American cinema where many contemporary films have explored surveillance in society. The textual analyses presented in the thesis will focus on three such films, Strange Days (1995), Southland Tales (2005), and Nightcrawler (2014). Throughout this thesis, I examine how each of these films offers a unique, reflexive take on surveillance, adhering to generative mechanisms that evoke differing attitudes about surveillance through their form. My analysis draws on Laura Mulvey and Patricia Pisters’ theories on …

Are Women Moving? Food Insecurity, Obesity, And Women’S Food-Access Strategies In Broward County Florida’S Food Deserts, Arely B. Lozano-Baugh Jan 2016

Are Women Moving? Food Insecurity, Obesity, And Women’S Food-Access Strategies In Broward County Florida’S Food Deserts, Arely B. Lozano-Baugh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Food insecurity or low-access to good quality, affordable foods affects minority women and children disproportionately (Herndon, 2014; Ivers & Cullen, 2011; Lee, 2012; Wigg Dammann & Smith, 2009). Linked to the rise in nutritionrelated and other health problems afflicting these populations (e.g., malnutrition, obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure among others) (Azarbad & Gonder- Frederick, 2010; Bove & Olson, 2006; Larson, Story, & Nelson, 2009), this issue has been gaining some attention. Still, programs combating weight and “weightrelated disorders” generally focus on individualistic solutions (Orbach, Bodies 2009)—such as increasing daily exercise and vilifying certain diets. Dismissing important spatial and systematic …

A Whiteheadian Interpretation Of The Zoharic Creation Story, Michael Gold Jan 2016

A Whiteheadian Interpretation Of The Zoharic Creation Story, Michael Gold

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This dissertation presents a Whiteheadian interpretation of the notions of mind, immanence and process as they are addressed in the Zohar. According to many scholars, this kabbalistic creation story as portrayed in the Zohar is a reaction to the earlier rabbinic concept of God qua creator, which emphasized divine transcendence over divine immanence. The medieval Jewish philosophers, particularly Maimonides influenced by Aristotle, placed particular emphasis on divine transcendence, seeing a radical separation between Creator and creation. With this in mind, these scholars claim that one of the goals of the Zohar’s creation story was to emphasize God’s immanence within creation. …

An Intelligent Method For Violence Detection In Live Video Feeds, Maryam Eneim Jan 2016

An Intelligent Method For Violence Detection In Live Video Feeds, Maryam Eneim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In the past few years, violence detection has become an increasingly rele- vant topic in computer vision with many proposed solutions by researchers. This thesis proposes a solution called Criminal Aggression Recognition Engine (CARE), an OpenCV based Java implementation of a violence detection system that can be trained with video datasets to classify action in a live feed as non-violent or violent. The algorithm extends existing work on fast ght detection by implementing violence detection of live video, in addition to prerecorded video. The results for violence detection in prerecorded videos are comparable to other popular detection systems and the …

Face Processing Using Mobile Devices, Jhanon James Jan 2016

Face Processing Using Mobile Devices, Jhanon James

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Image Processing and Computer Vision solutions have become commodities for software developers, thanks to the growing availability of Application Program- ming Interfaces (APIs) that encapsulate rich functionality, powered by advanced al- gorithms. To understand and create an e cient method to process faces in images by computers, one must understand how the human visual system processes them. Face processing by computers has been an active research area for about 50 years now. Face detection has become a commodity and is now incorporated into simple devices such as digital cameras and smartphones. An iOS app was implemented in Objective-C using Microsoft …

Entrepreneurial Alertness, Metacognitive Knowledge, And Opportunity Identification, Kevin Cox Jan 2016

Entrepreneurial Alertness, Metacognitive Knowledge, And Opportunity Identification, Kevin Cox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The research study investigates factors that influence entrepreneur’s ability to identify new venture opportunities. Entrepreneurial alertness has been widely argued as fundamental to the opportunity identification process, yet this relationship remains largely unverified by empirical evidence. This study provides an explicit investigation into the implications of entrepreneurial alertness for opportunity identification as well as how metacognitive factors moderate the proposed relationship. First, Chapter 1 provides an overview the purpose, research questions, the significance of the study, and the conceptual framework. Next, a comprehensive review of the existing literature on opportunity identification is provided which is followed by the development of …
