Social Dimensions Of Alzheimer’S Disease Among Caregivers In Oaxaca, Mexico, Jonathan Yahalom Jan 2016

Social Dimensions Of Alzheimer’S Disease Among Caregivers In Oaxaca, Mexico, Jonathan Yahalom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation provides an analysis of the social construction of Alzheimer’s disease within Teotitlán del Valle, a rural Zapotec-speaking community in Oaxaca, Mexico. It explores how Alzheimer’s disease is locally understood, how this understanding reconfigures traditional meanings of old age, and how broader social issues are negotiated through this reconfiguration. Through 10 months of fieldwork this dissertation draws on ethnographic observations and interviews with 22 family caregivers across 9 households. This study is noteworthy for being the first known investigation in Teotitlán whose primary data was collected in the Zapotec language. Further, this dissertation integrates methods across psychology, gerontology, and …

Sexual Desire(S) And The Desire For Intimacy: An Autoethnographic Exploration, Nikolaos D. Kiskiras Jan 2016

Sexual Desire(S) And The Desire For Intimacy: An Autoethnographic Exploration, Nikolaos D. Kiskiras

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sexual desire has traditionally been approached and investigated through reductionist lenses that have usually overlooked its complexity. In the past 150 years, it has mainly appeared articulated within medical and sexological discourses that have actively attempted to demarcate, categorize, and medicalize it. As a result, “healthy” and “pathological” forms of sexual desire have been constructed, whereas the social, cultural, political, and ideological forces that structure and shape it have been largely ignored. Furthermore, the conceptualization of distinct forms of sexual desire has given rise to the construction of equally distinct, ostensibly fixed, “healthy” as well as “pathological,” sexual identities.

Disabling Psychology: A Crip Analysis Of Deaf And Blind Psychotherapists In Practice, Kathryn Irene Wagner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the phenomenological experience of d/Deaf or blind psychotherapists who work with nondisabled clients, seeking to understand the perceived impact of disability on the therapeutic relationship. There is an abundance of research on nondisabled therapists treating disabled clients but only a handful of studies qualitatively considering the disabled therapist’s understanding of practicing in a largely ableist world. Six deaf and eight blind therapists were interviewed for this dissertation. Results were qualitatively analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Results were also interpreted through a critical disability studies framework with an eye toward challenging the ableism embedded within traditional research …

Christian Millennials And Christian Symbols In Advertising: Understanding The Effects Of Christian Symbols On Advertising Effectiveness, Arthur Rainer Jan 2016

Christian Millennials And Christian Symbols In Advertising: Understanding The Effects Of Christian Symbols On Advertising Effectiveness, Arthur Rainer

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

The use of religious symbols in advertising is not novel. For a significant period of time, advertisers have used religious symbols in advertising to appeal to the religions’ respective adherents. However, the research on this particular advertising strategy remains sparse. While some studies have show the effectiveness of religious symbols in advertising, there is very little research on the moderating effect of a symbol’s perceived sacredness and prominence in the ad on perceived attitude similarity, perceived expertise, perceived trustworthiness, and skepticism. Additionally, much research is needed to further understand generational differences among consumers who view advertisements containing religious symbols. This …

Bioactive Compounds From Aquilalia Crassna, Garcinia Gracilis And Hydnocarpus Ilicifolia With Antioxidant, Dna Protective And Α-Glucosidase Inhibitory Activities, Chonlakan Supasuteekul

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Phytochemical study of the leaves of Aquilaria crassna Pierre ex Lecomte (Thymelaeaceae) led to the isolation of three major constituents, namely, genkwanin 5-O-β-primeveroside, iriflophenone 3,5-C-β-D-diglucoside and iriflophenone 3-C-β-D-glucoside. The leaves of Garcinia gracilis Pierre (Clusiaceae) yielded 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde, vanillic acid and apigenin-8-C-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside. The fruits of Hydnocarpus ilicifolia King (Achariaceae) afforded five compounds, namely, chrysoeriol, schweinfurthinol, luteolin, luteolin 5,3'-dimethyl ether and D-pinitol. Their structures were determined by an analysis of spectroscopic data (NMR and HR-ESI-MS) and comparison with previously reported data. Each of these compounds was evaluated for its antioxidant activity using DPPH and superoxide anion radical scavenging assays. Iriflophenone 3-C-β-D-glucoside from …

Measuring Well-Being: A Review Of Instruments, Philip J. Cooke, Timothy P. Melchert, Korey Connor

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Interest in the study of psychological health and well-being has increased significantly in recent decades. A variety of conceptualizations of psychological health have been proposed including hedonic and eudaimonic well-being, quality-of-life, and wellness approaches. Although instruments for measuring constructs associated with each of these approaches have been developed, there has been no comprehensive review of well-being measures. The present literature review was undertaken to identify self-report instruments measuring well-being or closely related constructs (i.e., quality of life and wellness) and critically evaluate them with regard to their conceptual basis and psychometric properties. Through a literature search, we identified 42 instruments …

The Pid-5, Everyday Sadism, And Parental Attachment Predict Sexual Aggression, Tiffany Dawn Russell Jan 2016

The Pid-5, Everyday Sadism, And Parental Attachment Predict Sexual Aggression, Tiffany Dawn Russell

Theses and Dissertations

This study attempted to replicate and expand the Confluence Model of Sexual Aggression (Malamuth et al., 1991) in an online survey of national (n = 512) and university (n = 100) men. Overall, 28.8% of men (national = 29.5%; university = 25%) reported perpetrating sexual aggression against a woman at least once. In the sexually aggressive group, 81.2% reported perpetrating sexual violence more than once, and 40.3% reported six or more acts. It was hypothesized the Confluence Model would be improved by adding everyday sadism, parental attachment, and the Personality Inventory for the DSM-5 (PID-5). In a structural equation model, …

The Impact Of Cultural Identity And Social Capital On American Indian Elders' Subjective Health, Cole Lewis Ward Jan 2016

The Impact Of Cultural Identity And Social Capital On American Indian Elders' Subjective Health, Cole Lewis Ward

Theses and Dissertations

Data gathered from the National Resource Center on Native American Aging at the University of North Dakota was utilized (N = 8,396) to see if a relationship exists between cultural identity and social capital, the independent variables, and the dependent variable, subjective health. It is anticipated that there will be strong relationships between cultural identity, social capital, and subjective health because it is culturally expected that the younger generations of American Indians will take care of their elders by providing support when needed. This will provide a strong sense of well-being for American Indian elders. Additionally, cultural identity is expected …

Hyperfemininity As A Maladaptive Adherence To Feminine Norms: Cross-Validation Using The Personality Assessment Inventory And Personality Inventory For Dsm-5, Hannah Baczynski Jan 2016

Hyperfemininity As A Maladaptive Adherence To Feminine Norms: Cross-Validation Using The Personality Assessment Inventory And Personality Inventory For Dsm-5, Hannah Baczynski

Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, the construct validity of a new measure of hyperfemininity, the Hyperfemininity Questionnaire (HFQ), was examined. Hyperfemininity is defined as an exaggerated, strict, and overt adherence to stereotypic feminine gender role norms (Murnen & Byrne, 199). The study built upon two exploratory factor analyses and a confirmatory factor analysis which found five factors included in the HFQ: traditional values, superficiality, emotionality, manipulation, and attraction to masculinity. Two well-established personality measures (Personality Assessment Inventory – PAI, Morey, 2007 and Personality Inventory for DSM-5 - PID-5, Krueger, Derringer, Markon, Watson, & Skodol, 2012) were used to establish the construct …

Old Tales, New Renditions: The Foundations And Development Of Anti-Semitic Ritual Murder Libels With Emphasis On A Shift In Centrality From Crucifixion To Blood Motifs In Late Medieval And Early Modern German Contexts, Evan John Halbach Jan 2016

Old Tales, New Renditions: The Foundations And Development Of Anti-Semitic Ritual Murder Libels With Emphasis On A Shift In Centrality From Crucifixion To Blood Motifs In Late Medieval And Early Modern German Contexts, Evan John Halbach

Theses and Dissertations

The terms “ritual murder libel” and “blood libel” both refer primarily to medieval and early modern anti-Semitic allegations that Jews murdered Christian children on religious holidays, either to abuse or profane Christ and Christians, or to acquire Christian blood for use in Jewish ritual, sorcery, or as a medicine to treat stereotypical racial infirmities. Scholars to this point have generally treated the two libels as either synonymous, or have considered distinctions to be relatively insignificant. Insufficient treatment has been given to an inversion of primary and secondary motivations attributed to the libels’ constructed villains. In “ritual murder libels,” contempt for …

The research examined how infantrymen rated male and female soldiers differently on 14 traits as well as their support for female integration. The results showed that infantrymen rated men higher than women. In addition, men who …

Purging Pathology And Interpersonal-Psychological Variables As Predictors Of Suicidal Ideation, Alexandra Thiel Jan 2016

Purging Pathology And Interpersonal-Psychological Variables As Predictors Of Suicidal Ideation, Alexandra Thiel

Theses and Dissertations

The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory on Suicidal Behavior (IPTS; Joiner,

2005; Joiner, Ribeiro, & Silva, 2012), proposes that active suicidal ideation is formed when an individual experiences high perceived burdensomeness, low perceived belongingness, and hopelessness (Joiner et al., 2012). Eating disorders (ED) are associated with high mortality rates from suicide (Harris & Barraclough, 1997), and recently researchers have begun applying IPTS to ED symptomatology (Smith et al., 2013; Dodd, Smith, & Bodell, 2014). In particular, purging-type EDs are associated with increased risk for suicide (Fedorowicz et al., 2007; Milos, Spindler, Hepp, & Schnyder, 2004; Protzky, van Heeringen, & Vervaet, 2014). Thus, the …

The Impact Of Power Status On Gender Stereotypes, Sexism, And Gender Discrimination Toward Women In The Workplace And The Career Identity Development Of Women, Juemei Yang Jan 2016

The Impact Of Power Status On Gender Stereotypes, Sexism, And Gender Discrimination Toward Women In The Workplace And The Career Identity Development Of Women, Juemei Yang

Theses and Dissertations

Women often experience unique barriers at workplace that hinder their career development (Whitley & Kite, 2010). In this study I focused on several of the barriers: gender stereotypes, sexism, and gender discrimination. Specifically, I examined the impact of career-related power, the gender of the perceiver, and the gender of the perceived on the endorsement of gender stereotypes, of sexist attitudes, and of gender discrimination. Significant results indicated that gender stereotypes and sexist attitude are most strongly endorsed by men with high power and women with low power. The largely insignificant results of discrimination also suggested that a climate change might …

The Effects Of Resistance Training Programs On Physical Self-Perceptions In College Females, Kelsey Lauren Zachman

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of resistance training on females’ self-perception. Introduction: It is generally accepted that exercise enhances physical self-perceptions, but the impact of resistance training programs on females’ self-perceptions is unclear. Because exercise is an important public health behavior, and because physical self-perceptions have motivational implications, this study has potential to add knowledge that is relevant to exercise promotion. Purpose: The primary aim of the study was to explore the effect of two different types of resistance training programs on physical self-perceptions of college age females. Methods: Participants (n=30) were randomized to muscular strength, muscular endurance resistance training groups or a …

The Role Of Creative Language In Addressing Political Asymmetries: The Israeli-Arab Water Agreements, Itay Fischhendler, Aaron T. Wolf, Gabriel E. Eckstein Jan 2016

The Role Of Creative Language In Addressing Political Asymmetries: The Israeli-Arab Water Agreements, Itay Fischhendler, Aaron T. Wolf, Gabriel E. Eckstein

Faculty Scholarship

International water agreements are often used as mechanisms for fostering and institutionalizing political cooperation. Yet, since water resources in many places are being driven to the edge of their natural limits, a number of international organizations have formulated legal principles and norms aimed at helping states resolve water disputes. While states have been urged to adopt these principles, it seems that they often embrace other less-traditional alternatives that may better address their own political needs. The aim of this study is to examine why states fail or decline to adopt several of the general principles of customary law formulated by …
