Publications

OBJECTIVE:

The current study investigated performance on a dual auditory task during a simulated night shift.

BACKGROUND:

Night shifts and sleep deprivation negatively affect performance on vigilance-based tasks, but less is known about the effects on complex tasks. Because language processing is necessary for successful work performance, it is important to understand how it is affected by night work and sleep deprivation.

METHOD:

Sixty-two participants completed a simulated night shift resulting in 28 hr of total sleep deprivation. Performance on a vigilance task and a dual auditory language task was examined across four testing sessions.

RESULTS:

The results indicate that …

Generation Of Organ-Conditioned Media And Applications For Studying Organ-Specific Influences On Breast Cancer Metastatic Behavior, Matthew M. Piaseczny, Graciella M. Pio, Jenny E. Chu, Ying Xia, Kim Nguyen, David Goodale, Alison Allan

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Breast cancer preferentially metastasizes to the lymph node, bone, lung, brain and liver in breast cancer patients. Previous research efforts have focused on identifying factors inherent to breast cancer cells that are responsible for this observed metastatic pattern (termed organ tropism), however much less is known about factors present within specific organs that contribute to this process. This is in part because of a lack of in vitro model systems that accurately recapitulate the organ microenvironment. To address this, an ex vivo model system has been established that allows for the study of soluble factors present within different organ microenvironments. …

Objective To describe probabilities and characteristics of disease flares in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis ( JIA) and to identify clinical features associated with an increased risk of flare. Methods We studied children in the Research in Arthritis in Canadian Children emphasizing Outcomes (ReACCh-Out) prospective inception cohort. A flare was defined as a recurrence of disease manifestations after attaining inactive disease and was called significant if it required intensification of treatment. Probability of first flare was calculated with Kaplan-Meier methods, and associated features were identified using Cox regression. Results 1146 children were followed up a median of 24 months after …

Env-604: Enhanced Electro-Oxidation For Tkn Removal From Highly Polluted Industrial Wastewater, Arash F. Jahromi, Maria Elektorowicz, Nadezda Zhukovskaya

Canadian Society for Civil Engineering

Many industrial effluents contain concentrated Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), which may might be also accompanied with ammonia, sulfur, iron, total solids, etc. Conventional wastewater treatment plants are unable to remove TKN, to a level acceptable for the ecosystem, thus, such wastewater has to be treated at the source; however, adequate methods have not been demonstrated yet. The industrial wastewater of concern, which contained 14 g TKN/L and 11 g NH4/L had a low probability to be biologically treated, therefore, an enhanced electro-oxidation method was proposed in this study. The industrial effluent was subjected to a series of tests, where finally …

Env-610: Effect Of Nutrients On Methanotrophic Oxidation Activity In Batch Experimental Studies, Helen La, J. Patrick A. Hettiaratchi, Gopal Achari

Canadian Society for Civil Engineering

Methane biofiltration (MBF) has been proposed as an effective and cost efficient method for mitigating methane emissions from anthropogenic sources. Previous MBF studies have successfully demonstrated effective methane oxidation using compost, soil and biodegradable organic materials as the filter medium because they are a natural source of nutrients, organic matter content, and provide adequate space to support microbiological growth. However, these media types will inevitably decompose over time and lose their effectiveness. This study investigates the use of biologically stable media mixtures of lava rock and biochar in batch oxidation studies to determine their ability to support a methanotrophic bacterial …

Env-646: Successful Water Reuse – The First Step Toward Zld, Ed Greenwood, Bill Malyk

Canadian Society for Civil Engineering

After years of record-breaking droughts many aquifers around the World are drying up. Climate change is making it increasingly difficult to support the World’s growing population. If water means life then water scarcity represents a significant challenge to growth for industry.

A Canadian-based food processor is rising to the challenge of water scarcity at one of its production facilities in Gujarat, India. Until 2013 the facility was able to draw all the water it needed from a well. However, droughts have reduced groundwater resources and the demand for the facility’s products has grown. The food processor approached Amec Foster Wheeler …

Env-647: Repurposing Existing Infrastructure For Enhanced Wet Weather Flow Treatment For Vauxhall Pcp, City Of London, Louis Tasfi, Geordie Gould

Canadian Society for Civil Engineering

The Vauxhall Pollution Control Plant (PCP) is one of the first Ontario municipal wastewater treatment plants to have implemented a wet weather strategy that involves chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) and chemically enhanced secondary clarification processes and repurposes existing infrastructure.

Wet weather events were a major concern for the City of London (City). Prior to plant upgrade, when major wet weather flows occurred plant overflow would discharge directly into the Thames River. The solution designed by Dillon Consulting Limited treats wet weather flows of nearly ten times the rated average day plant capacity. The average and peak flow treatment capacity …

Str-854: Multifunctional And Multiphysics Materials As Load-Bearing Structural Components, Abdolhamid Akbarzadeh Shafaroudi, Sara Rankohi

Canadian Society for Civil Engineering

Multifunctional and multiphysics cellular solids are introduced in this paper as load-bearing structural components. Cellular solids offer a robust low-mass alternative for applications requiring lightweight and stiff components. The unique properties of cellular solids are achieved through cell geometry, connectivity, relative density, and properties of constituent materials. Inspired by biological systems, smart cellular solids can integrate low-mass, sensing/actuating, and self-healing properties into structural components. Discrete fabrication, by integrating patches of smart/active materials onto cellular solids, and continuous fabrication, using additive manufacturing, are two fabrication techniques for the manufacturing of multifunctional cellular solids. We propose a multiscale methodology for the analysis …

Reducing Food And Packaging Waste Through Developing Edible Fruit Based Packaging Prototypes, Melanie Thatcher Jun 2016

Reducing Food And Packaging Waste Through Developing Edible Fruit Based Packaging Prototypes, Melanie Thatcher

Materials Engineering

Packaging is used to contain, preserve, protect, and advertise both manufactured and natural products. In 2013 it was reported that over thirty percent of solid waste in the United States was from packaging. One way to reduce the impact of packaging on the environment is to create a solution that is edible and sourced from a waste or secondary food product that is not currently being utilized. Food-contact packaging made from recycled materials must meet strict U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations to be utilized as raw material for packaging. Fruit pomace is a candidate material since it may …

Ion And Water Balance In Gryllus Crickets During The First Twelve Hours Of Cold Exposure., Lauren E Des Marteaux, Brent J Sinclair Jun 2016

Ion And Water Balance In Gryllus Crickets During The First Twelve Hours Of Cold Exposure., Lauren E Des Marteaux, Brent J Sinclair

Biology Publications

Insects lose ion and water balance during chilling, but the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are based on patterns of ion and water balance observed in the later stages of cold exposure (12 or more hours). Here we quantified the distribution of ions and water in the hemolymph, muscle, and gut in adult Gryllus field crickets during the first 12h of cold exposure to test mechanistic hypotheses about why homeostasis is lost in the cold, and how chill-tolerant insects might maintain homeostasis to lower temperatures. Unlike in later chill coma, hemolymph [Na(+)] and Na(+) content in the first few hours of …

Reproductive Arrest And Stress Resistance In Winter-Acclimated Drosophila Suzukii., Jantina Toxopeus, Ruth Jakobs, Laura V Ferguson, Tara D Gariepy, Brent J Sinclair Jun 2016

Reproductive Arrest And Stress Resistance In Winter-Acclimated Drosophila Suzukii., Jantina Toxopeus, Ruth Jakobs, Laura V Ferguson, Tara D Gariepy, Brent J Sinclair

Biology Publications

Overwintering insects must survive the multiple-stress environment of winter, which includes low temperatures, reduced food and water availability, and cold-active pathogens. Many insects overwinter in diapause, a developmental arrest associated with high stress tolerance. Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae), spotted wing drosophila, is an invasive agricultural pest worldwide. Its ability to overwinter and therefore establish in temperate regions could have severe implications for fruit crop industries. We demonstrate here that laboratory populations of Canadian D. suzukii larvae reared under short-day, low temperature, conditions develop into dark 'winter morph' adults similar to those reported globally from field captures, and observed by us …

NYMC Faculty Publications

Endostatin (EST), an antiangiogenic factor, is enriched in aging kidneys. EST is also an interactive partner of transglutaminase 2 (TG2), an enzyme that cross-links extracellular matrix proteins. Here we tested whether EST and TG2 play a role in the fibrosis of aging. In wild-type mice, aging kidneys exhibited a 2- to 4-fold increase in TG2 paralleled by increased cross-linked extracellular matrix proteins and fibrosis. Mice transgenic to express EST showed renal fibrosis at a young age. One-month delivery of EST via minipumps to young mice showed increased renal fibrosis that became more robust when superimposed on folic acid-induced nephropathy. Upregulated …

No. 03: Urban Food Deserts And Climate Change In African Cities, Mary Caesar, Jonathan Crush

Hungry Cities Partnership

The underlying assumption in much of the Euro-American food deserts literature is that urban food deserts are dynamic spaces, expanding and contracting with the advent and withdrawal of supermarkets. This discussion paper argues that to tie such dynamism purely to the spatial behaviour of formal food retail outlets is both narrow and inappropriate in the African context, where the use of the food deserts concept requires a sophisticated understanding of the multiple market and non-market food sources, of the spatial mobility and dynamism of the informal food economy, of the changing drivers of household food insecurity and the local conditions …

Enrichment Of Diluted Cell Populations From Large Sample Volumes Using 3d Carbon-Electrode Dielectrophoresis, Monsur Islam, Rucha Natu, Maria Fernanda Larraga-Martinez, Rodrigo Martinez-Duarte

Publications

Here, we report on an enrichment protocol using carbon electrodedielectrophoresis to isolate and purify a targeted cell population from sample volumes up to 4 ml. We aim at trapping, washing, and recovering an enriched cell fraction that will facilitate downstream analysis. We used an increasingly diluted sample of yeast, 106–102 cells/ml, to demonstrate the isolation and enrichment of few cells at increasing flow rates. A maximum average enrichment of 154.2 ± 23.7 times was achieved when the sample flow rate was 10 μl/min and yeast cells were suspended in low electrically conductive media that maximizes dielectrophoresis trapping. A COMSOL …
