Cyclic Di-Gmp-Regulated Periplasmic Proteolysis Of A Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Type Vb Secretion System Substrate, Richard B. Cooley, T. Jarrod Smith, Wilfred Leung, Valerie Tierney, Bradley Borlee, George A. O'Toole, Holger Sondermann
Dartmouth Scholarship
We previously identified a second-messenger-regulated signaling system in the environmental bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens which controls biofilm formation in response to levels of environmental inorganic phosphate. This system contains the transmembrane cyclic di-GMP (c-di-GMP) receptor LapD and the periplasmic protease LapG. LapD regulates LapG and controls the ability of this protease to process a large cell surface adhesin protein, LapA. While LapDG orthologs can be identified in diverse

A study of floodplain sedimentation on a recently restored floodplain is presented. This study uses a two-dimensional hydro-morphodynamic model for predicting flow and suspended-sediment dynamics in the downstream of Johnson Creek, the East Lents reach, where the bank of the river has been reconfigured to reconnect to a restored floodplain on a 0.26 km2 (26-ha) site. The simulation scenarios include 10-, 50-, 100- and 500-year event-based deposition modelling of flood events and long-term modelling using the 64 historical flood events between 1941 and 2014. Simulation results showed that the restored floodplain significantly attenuates the upstream flood peak by up …
Optimizing Methods For Extraction Of Organic Compounds From Molluscan Shells, Kaydee Jo West
Optimizing Methods For Extraction Of Organic Compounds From Molluscan Shells, Kaydee Jo West
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Mollusk shells contain proteins within and between the crystals of calcium carbonate. These organic molecules play an important role in biomineralization and shell function, and their stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen are also thought to record important ecological information about the animal's diet and nutrient sources. These proteins can be preserved for millions of years, offering potential insight into pre-anthropogenic ecological conditions. However, shell organics in older shells are typically recovered in reduced abundances due to leaching and remaining organics are often converted from insoluble proteins to soluble, free amino acids, making them difficult to detect and recover. …

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
Faith Community Nurses have common beliefs, principles, ethics, and a level of trust with their population making them well-positioned to positively impact parishioners. FCNs provide support for people’s spiritual needs and nursing care. This makes FCNs a vital and approachable resource for parishioners when seeking advisement and assistance regarding their mental healthcare. In this article, we define red flags as suicidal idealization, mania, and psychosis, which if not promptly assessed and referred for treatment may result in serious harm or death. These red flags are predominately found in people with schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. People with …

A convenience sample of 195 UNC undergraduate students completed a 19-item questionnaire composed of closed ended questions involving time allotments to obligated and unobligated activities. Results indicated that UNC students spend approximately the same amount of time in obligated and unobligated activity. Means testing across the seven time categories revealed no significant differences between male and female students. However, mean testing between upper classmen and lower classmen indicated that …
Effects Of Multilevel Selection On The Evolution Of Homo Neandertalensis, Tracey Renee Lancaster
Effects Of Multilevel Selection On The Evolution Of Homo Neandertalensis, Tracey Renee Lancaster
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
In this article, a model is used based on a paper by E. O. Wilson et al. (2007) to examine how multilevel selection has affected the evolution of Neandertals. Multilevel selection theory states natural selection occurs in multiple levels of the biological hierarchy. This model has never been applied to a hominid species to date. By synthesizing this research by Wilson et al. and genetic studies by Green et al. (2010) revealing that Neandertals and humans interbred in the Middle East 80,000 years ago, it is shown that multilevel selection may have affected Neandertal evolution. Further, it is argued that …

Productivity And Diversity In Research And Agriculture: Improving The Ipr Landscape For Food Security, A. Max Jarvie
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
While food security has long been a national or regional burden, the advent of international instruments governing intellectual property rights over conventionally bred plant varieties and genetically modified plants has made the management of food security a global concern. Current intellectual property regimes do not provide clear support for innovations in crop productivity or biodiversity, both of which are implicated in the long term stability of food supply. This Paper examines the intellectual property regimes governing agricultural food stocks with respect to the level of support they provide for three key research programs in the development of crop seeds and …

Coercing Collaboration: The Chesapeake Bay Experience, Jamison E. Colburn
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
This Article uses a detailed case study of the Chesapeake to describe an emergent model of intergovernmental administration tailored to address our largest-scale environmental problems. The Obama EPA’s “total maximum daily load” (“TMDL”) in the Chesapeake has yet to be replicated. But it should be. The TMDL and its supporting norms were unique as an operational plan, achieving a level of transparency, accountability, means/ends rationality, and continuous improvement that were unprecedented at its scale. And whether this model can be replicated elsewhere turns out to be as much a question of law as of politics.

XPC-RAD23B (XPC) plays a critical role in human nucleotide excision repair (hNER) as this complex recognizes DNA adducts to initiate NER. To determine the mutagenic potential of structurally different bulky DNA damages, various studies have been conducted to define the correlation of XPC-DNA damage equilibrium binding affinity with NER efficiency. However, little is known about the effects of XPC-DNA damage recognition kinetics on hNER. Although association of XPC is important, our current work shows that the XPC-DNA dissociation rate also plays a pivotal role in achieving NER efficiency. We characterized for the first time the binding of XPC to mono- versus …

Resveratrol is a polyphenol that has witnessed an unprecedented yearly growth in PubMed citations since the late 1990s. Based on the diversity of cellular processes and diseases resveratrol reportedly affects and benefits, it is likely that the interest in resveratrol will continue, although uncertainty regarding its mechanism in different biological systems remains. We hypothesize that insights on disease-modulatory activities of resveratrol might be gleaned by systematically dissecting the publicly available published data on chemicals and drugs. In this study, we tested our hypothesis by querying DTome (Drug-Target Interactome), a web-based tool containing data compiled from open-source databases including DrugBank, PharmGSK, and …

The microbiome impacts human health and disease. Until recently, human breast tissue and milk were presumed to be sterile. Here, we investigated the presence of microbes in the nipple aspirate fluid (NAF) and their potential association with breast cancer. We compared the NAF microbiome between women with a history of breast cancer (BC) and healthy control women (HC) using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The NAF microbiome from BC and HC showed significant differences in community composition. Two Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) showed differences in relative abundances between NAF collected from BC and HC. In NAF collected from BC, there …

Staphylococcus aureus is a formidable human pathogen that uses secreted cytolytic factors to injure immune cells and promote infection of its host. Of these proteins, the bicomponent family of pore-forming leukocidins play critical roles in S. aureus pathogenesis. The regulatory mechanisms governing the expression of these toxins are incompletely defined. In this work, we performed a screen to identify transcriptional regulators involved in leukocidin expression in S. aureus strain USA300. We discovered that a metabolic sensor-regulator, RpiRc, is a potent and selective repressor of two leukocidins, LukED and LukSF-PV. Whole-genome transcriptomics, S. aureus exoprotein proteomics, and metabolomic analyses revealed that …
