Cellular And Molecular Features Of Developmentally Programmed Genome Rearrangement In A Vertebrate (Sea Lamprey: Petromyzon Marinus), Vladimir A. Timoshevskiy, Joseph R. Herdy, Melissa C. Keinath, Jeramiah J. Smith

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

The sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) represents one of the few vertebrate species known to undergo large-scale programmatic elimination of genomic DNA over the course of its normal development. Programmed genome rearrangements (PGRs) result in the reproducible loss of ~20% of the genome from somatic cell lineages during early embryogenesis. Studies of PGR hold the potential to provide novel insights related to the maintenance of genome stability during the cell cycle and coordination between mechanisms responsible for the accurate distribution of chromosomes into daughter cells, yet little is known regarding the mechanistic basis or cellular context of PGR in this or …

Do River Otters Conform To Habitat Suitability Assessments?, Angela Holland, Jorista Van Der Merwe

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

River otters ( Lontra canadensis ) were reintroduced from 1994-1996 into parts of Illinois where the species was extirpated due to over harvest and habitat loss. At the time of reintroduction, managing for the persistence of the population through habitat was very important and research was conducted to determine which watersheds had quality habitat and which needed increased management and protection. In a study conducted in the mid-1990s, biologists used pattern recognition (PATREC) modeling to identify high and low quality habitat for river otters at the subunit level (i.e., divided watershed), based on specific habitat attributes including wooded area, sinuosity, …

Impacts Of Pollutants On Beavers And Otters With Implications For Ecosystem Ramifications, Elizabeth K. Peterson, Bruce A. Schulte Jun 2016

Impacts Of Pollutants On Beavers And Otters With Implications For Ecosystem Ramifications, Elizabeth K. Peterson, Bruce A. Schulte

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Anthropogenic pollution has impacted ecosystems and organisms globally. Aquatic freshwater systems are of particular concern because of their importance to human health and livelihoods. Sentinel species can serve as indicators for both individual and population-level health risks to both wildlife and humans, and therefore facilitate the mitigation and prevention of such contamination. When such species are also keystone species and/or ecological engineers in aquatic ecosystems, understanding the influence of pollutants on their physiology and behavior acquires added importance. Given that river otters ( Lontra canadensis and Lutra lutra ) and beavers ( Castor canadensis and C. fiber ) serve such …

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

New records of the endemic semi-aquatic Nimba Otter Shrew Micropotamogale lamottei (Tenrecidae, Potamogalinae) were obtained during recent Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) in Liberia. We discuss the future of this Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species in the face of large-scale landscape transformations. In an attempt to assess genetic diversity and genetic differentiation of M. lamottei throughout its distributional range, we examined two mitochondrial loci (cytochrome b and 12S rRNA) from five samples of Nimba Otter Shrews at three localities in Liberia and compared the 12S sequences with a GenBank sequence from Cote d'Ivoire. While all six individuals examined had …

Inquiry Of Lipid Membranes Interacting With Functional Peptides And Polyphenol Drug Molecules, Chian Sing Ho Jun 2016

Inquiry Of Lipid Membranes Interacting With Functional Peptides And Polyphenol Drug Molecules, Chian Sing Ho

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cellular membranes are important targets for many membrane-active peptides and drug compounds. Here we are interested in deciphering how lipid membranes are perturbed by several membrane-active molecules, including the transmembrane domain of the influenza M2 protein (M2TM), aggregates formed by a synthetic polyglutamine peptide, and three polyphenol compounds (i.e., tamoxifen, genistein, and verapamil). We employ phase-separated ternary lipid model membranes in the form of giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) to simulate raft-like structures that have been proposed to govern many important processes in plasma membranes (e.g., intracellular singling and trafficking). Specifically, we use fluorescent microscopy to interrogate how those membrane additives …

Contributing Factors Of Success In Speech Fluency Therapy, Evelyn Ortega Jun 2016

Contributing Factors Of Success In Speech Fluency Therapy, Evelyn Ortega

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Since the inception of stuttering therapy, the field of speech-language pathology has become increasingly evidence based; its affects have lead clinicians to come up with better techniques that can be successful. However, there are still some gaps in research that need to be analyzed. Recent research has shown both the clinician’s point of view and the experiences and perceptions of clients that should also be considered in treatment planning. Not only is it important to view the stuttering behavior, but also to view the byproducts of the speech disorder. These byproducts of stuttering are not separate from therapy sessions; they …

Changes In Canyon Wren Vocalizations In Advance Of The Breeding Season, Anne Rose Jun 2016

Changes In Canyon Wren Vocalizations In Advance Of The Breeding Season, Anne Rose

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Many animals adjust their signaling patterns throughout the year. Birds may use different signals as they increase association with mates and expend more energy in territory defense. Song is typically associated with territorial defense and pair bonding between mates, while calls often relate to maintaining contact between foraging birds. We studied variations in vocal behavior in canyon wrens (Catherpes mexicanus) by recording a pair across the midwinter-early spring transition preceding nesting. Recordings were made at the same time weekly for ten weeks. Call rate decreased during this period, contrasting strongly with increasing song production. The occurrence of low …

"Keep The Quarterback White"!: Rush Limbaugh's Social Construction Of The Black Quarterback, Jennifer Van Otterloo Jun 2016

"Keep The Quarterback White"!: Rush Limbaugh's Social Construction Of The Black Quarterback, Jennifer Van Otterloo

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Despite the prominence of professional football in U.S. culture, little research has been conducted examining the social construction of race in the game. People have a cultural perception of race; what effect does this perception have on the players? There has been research on the historical struggles of Black athletes in collegiate football, as well as lasting issues of racism. To add to this body of literature, this analysis will focus on the institutional racism embedded in the drafting practices of quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL). This paper finds that institutional racism has a lasting effect on the …

Effect Of Rapamycin As An Inhibitor Of The Mtor Cell Cycle Entry Complex On The Selective Lysis Of Human Leukemia Cells Lines In Vitro Using 20 Khz Pulsed Low-Frequency Ultrasound, Yasmine Hemida Jun 2016

Effect Of Rapamycin As An Inhibitor Of The Mtor Cell Cycle Entry Complex On The Selective Lysis Of Human Leukemia Cells Lines In Vitro Using 20 Khz Pulsed Low-Frequency Ultrasound, Yasmine Hemida

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

It has been shown that the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, which regulates cell growth and proliferation, is aberrant in many hematological malignancies. Rapamycin inhibits mTOR signaling which regulates cell growth and cell cycle progression. This study sought to determine the effects of mTOR inhibitors on the cell sizes of normal and neoplastic cells and to determine ultrasonic sensitivity of normal and neoplastic cells treated with mTOR inhibitors. The effects of rapamycin (rapa), an extensively studied natural product that affects cell cycle entry by inhibiting mTORC1, and its analogs temsirolimus (tems) and everolimus (eve), were examined on leukemic cell …

Gender Difference In Preference And Prejudice For Female Body Shapes, Brianne M. Posey Jun 2016

Gender Difference In Preference And Prejudice For Female Body Shapes, Brianne M. Posey

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Research shows that overweight individuals face prejudice, but there is no research whether that a specific body type faces more or less prejudice. In the four main female body shapes- Apple, Banana, Pear, and Hourglass, fat is distributed differently. The purpose of this study is to examine gender differences in preference, idealization, and prejudice patterns for female body types amongst undergraduates. Participants were presented with four body shapes and asked to give 1) their preference, 2) their prediction of the opposite sex’s preference, and 3) their ideal body type. Then the particpants selected four adjectives to attribute to each body …

Exploring The Outcomes And Perceptions Of Traditional And Post-Baccalaureate Asls Students, Kashia D. Bayard

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

An increase in the number of post-baccalaureate students returning to college for additional education provides a need to better understand this growing population. Studies on program outcomes for traditional and post-baccalaureate students have focused primarily in the medical and nursing fields. These studies lack detailed insight into the student’s experiences and perceptions. Within the Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences fields there is also limited research on traditional and post-baccalaureate student outcomes and experiences. This mixed methods study examined the outcomes and explored the experiences and perceptions of traditional and post-baccalaureate students in the Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences program at the University …

Postural Stability And Flexibility In Young Adults, Danielle Ingle Jun 2016

Postural Stability And Flexibility In Young Adults, Danielle Ingle

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The components of postural stability and flexibility are considered essential to overall physical fitness and well-being. Previous researchers have evaluated the relationship between these factors in the elderly; however studies addressing the younger population in relation to implications of gender difference have been largely inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to assess the strength of the correlation between stability and flexibility in young adults as well as to evaluate ways in which the anthropometrical differences between men and women dictate flexibility performance. The present quantitative clinical study tested 20 young adults between 20 and 29 years in age, a …

Resource Relationship Characteristics Of Homeless Youth Accessing Higher Education Opportunities, Seth Morones Jun 2016

Resource Relationship Characteristics Of Homeless Youth Accessing Higher Education Opportunities, Seth Morones

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

This phenomenological study sought to explore how resource relationships impact college independent students during his/her homeless experience, while accessing higher education opportunities. Six students were interviewed at a Colorado university about their individual experiences. It was found that experiences pertaining to collegiate aspirations, educational barriers, accessing resource opportunities, and finding supplemental support were shared between the participants. Three major areas were identified as access areas for finding support including educational settings, community organizations, and intimate connections. These relationships assisted in providing social capital, based primarily on trust, as well as skill building and navigating the process of accessing college opportunities.

Toxicity Evaluation Of Tio2 Nanoparticles Embedded In Consumer Products, Andrea Galletti Jun 2016

Toxicity Evaluation Of Tio2 Nanoparticles Embedded In Consumer Products, Andrea Galletti

Open Access Theses

The present study is aimed at the assessment of the toxic hazard posed by TiO2 nanoparticles released in the marine environment. The marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana was chosen as the target organism for this study as it is a really simple organism, yet contributing to the base level of the marine ecosystem and therefore holding capital environmental importance. Along with industrially-produced TiO2 nanoparticles, this study wanted to shed some light on the properties and effects of TiO2 nanoparticles derived (extracted) from commercial products, in particular sunscreens and toothpastes. Our findings showed an impressive trend relating the growth inhibition to the …

Wet Air Oxidation For Industrial Wastewater And Sludge Treatment: First Results Of A New Research Program In Quebec, Jean-François Vermette, Sophie Girard, Patrick Desjardins Jun 2016

Wet Air Oxidation For Industrial Wastewater And Sludge Treatment: First Results Of A New Research Program In Quebec, Jean-François Vermette, Sophie Girard, Patrick Desjardins

5th International Congress on Green Process Engineering (GPE 2016)

Introduction

Sub-critical water technologies, in particular wet air oxidation (WAO), have been developing across Europe in recent decades. This process is now used at the industrial scale for the effective treatment of wet organic material, mainly sludge from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), and is done with energy self-sufficiency [1, 2]. In WAO, hot pressurised water (200-350 ˚C, 30-200 bars) is enriched with oxygen or air to initiate exothermic oxidation of organic material, mostly into CO2 and H2O. Since the operating temperature is much lower than typical incineration, no gaseous emissions of NOX, dioxins or furans …

How To Reduce The Energy Costs Of Food And Dairy Products To Spray Drying?, Pierre Schuck, Anne Dolivet, Serge Méjean, Romain Jeantet Jun 2016

How To Reduce The Energy Costs Of Food And Dairy Products To Spray Drying?, Pierre Schuck, Anne Dolivet, Serge Méjean, Romain Jeantet

5th International Congress on Green Process Engineering (GPE 2016)

The most frequently used technique for dehydration of dairy products is spray drying. This is an effective method to preserve biological products as it does not involve prolong exposure of materials to severe heat treatment. Due to the variety and complexity of the concentrates to be dried, a more rigorous understanding of spray-drying based on physico-chemical and thermodynamic properties is necessary. At the same time, the current state of the art did not allow easy determination of the parameters of spray-drying of dairy products prior to drying, except from performing several complex and expensive experiments with pilot-scale spray-dryer. Nevertheless, recent …

Burden Of Disease Resulting From Lead Exposure At Toxic Waste Sites In Argentina, Mexico And Uruguay, Jack Caravanos, Jonathan Carrelli, Russell Dowling, Brian Pavilonis, Bret Ericson, Richard Fuller

Publications and Research

Background: Though lead contaminated waste sites have been widely researched in many high-income countries, their prevalence and associated health outcomes have not been well documented in low- and middle-income countries.

Methods: Using the well-established health metric disability-adjusted life year (DALY) and an exposure assessment method developed by Chatham-Stephens et al., we estimated the burden of disease resulting from exposure to lead at toxic waste sites in three Latin American countries in 2012: Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay. Toxic waste sites identified through Pure Earth’s Toxic Sites Identification Program (TSIP) were screened for lead in both biological and environmental sample media. Estimates …

Efficiency Evaluation Of N95 Ffrs Under Cyclic And Constant Flows, Ali Bahloul, Fariborz Haghighat, Reza Mostofi, Alireza Mahdavi, Claude Ostiguy
