An Inquiry Into The Pedagogical Implications Of Dewey’S Ecological Thinking, Simon Jorgenson Jul 2016

An Inquiry Into The Pedagogical Implications Of Dewey’S Ecological Thinking, Simon Jorgenson

Occasional Paper Series

My primary purpose is to (re)examine Dewey in the context of contemporary conceptions of ecology and environmental education. With this in mind, I will focus primarily on what Dewey has to say about the natural world, beginning with his general philosophy and moving through several of his educational works.

Thinking Through Early Childhood, Jonathan Silin Jul 2016

Thinking Through Early Childhood, Jonathan Silin

Occasional Paper Series

Working against the grain of history and contemporary assumptions about the nature of the field, the author makes a counterintuitive argument that decenters the child and brings forward the adult in early childhood education (ECE).

Teaching: Natural Or Cultural?, David F. Lancy Jul 2016

Teaching: Natural Or Cultural?, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

In this chapter I argue that teaching, as we now understand the term, is historically and cross-culturally very rare. It appears to be unnecessary to transmit culture or to socialize children. Children are, on the other hand, primed by evolution to be avid observers, imitators, players and helpers—roles that reveal the profoundly autonomous and self-directed nature of culture acquisition (Lancy in press a). And yet, teaching is ubiquitous throughout the modern world—at least among the middle to upper class segment of the population. This ubiquity has led numerous scholars to argue for the universality and uniqueness of teaching as a …

Domains Of Stip1 Responsible For Regulating Prpc-Dependent Amyloid-Β Oligomer Toxicity., Andrzej Maciejewski, Valeriy G Ostapchenko, Flavio H Beraldo, Vania F Prado, Marco A M Prado, Wing-Yiu Choy

Biochemistry Publications

Soluble oligomers of amyloid-beta peptide (AβO) transmit neurotoxic signals through the cellular prion protein (PrP(C)) in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Secreted stress-inducible phosphoprotein 1 (STIP1), an Hsp70 and Hsp90 cochaperone, inhibits AβO binding to PrP(C) and protects neurons from AβO-induced cell death. Here, we investigated the molecular interactions between AβO and STIP1 binding to PrP(C) and their effect on neuronal cell death. We showed that residues located in a short region of PrP (90-110) mediate AβO binding and we narrowed the major interaction in this site to amino acids 91-100. In contrast, multiple binding sites on STIP1 (DP1, TPR1 and TPR2A) …

Using Regression-Based Effect Size Meta-Analysis To Investigate Coral Responses To Climate Change, Niklas Alexander Kornder Jul 2016

Using Regression-Based Effect Size Meta-Analysis To Investigate Coral Responses To Climate Change, Niklas Alexander Kornder

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Attempts to quantify the effects of ocean acidification and warming (OAW) on scleractinian corals provide a growing body of response measurements. However, placing empirical results into an ecological context is challenging, owing to variations that reflect both natural heterogeneity and scientific bias. This study addresses the heterogeneity of climate change induced changes in coral recruitment and calcification. To discern scientific bias and identify drivers of the remaining heterogeneity, 100 publications were analyzed using a combination of weighted mixed effects meta-regression and factorial effect size meta‑analysis. A linear model was applied to quantify the variation caused by differing stress levels across …

What is already known about this topic? Acute intoxications by synthetic cannabinoids appear to be increasing in the United States. Synthetic cannabinoids are two to 100 times more potent than Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in cannabis; acute exposure is associated with a range of mild to severe neuropsychiatric, cardiovascular, renal, and other effects. What is added by this report? During 2010–2015, among 456 cases of synthetic cannabinoid intoxication among patients treated by U.S. medical toxicologists, 277 (61%) had reports of synthetic cannabinoids as the sole toxicologic agent. Three deaths were recorded, one with synthetic cannabinoids given as the sole agent …

High Resolution Laser Mass Spectrometry Bioimaging, Kermit K. Murray, Chinthaka A. Seneviratne, Suman Ghorai

Faculty Publications

© 2016 Elsevier Inc. Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) was introduced more than five decades ago with secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and a decade later with laser desorption/ionization (LDI) mass spectrometry (MS). Large biomolecule imaging by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) was developed in the 1990s and ambient laser MS a decade ago. Although SIMS has been capable of imaging with a moderate mass range at sub-micrometer lateral resolution from its inception, laser MS requires additional effort to achieve a lateral resolution of 10 μm or below which is required to image at the size scale of single mammalian cells. This …

Ph-Dependent Dna Distortion And Repression Of Gene Expression By Pectobacterium Atrosepticum Pecs, Dinesh K. Deochand, Jacob K. Meariman, Anne Grove

Faculty Publications

© 2016 American Chemical Society. Transcriptional activity is exquisitely sensitive to changes in promoter DNA topology. Transcription factors may therefore control gene activity by modulating the relative positioning of -10 and -35 promoter elements. The plant pathogen Pectobacterium atrosepticum, which causes soft rot in potatoes, must alter gene expression patterns to ensure growth in planta. In the related soft-rot enterobacterium Dickeya dadantii, PecS functions as a master regulator of virulence gene expression. Here, we report that P. atrosepticum PecS controls gene activity by altering promoter DNA topology in response to pH. While PecS binds the pecS promoter with high affinity …

Phosphogenesis Associated With The Shuram Excursion: Petrographic And Geochemical Observations From The Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation Of South China, Huan Cui, Shuhai Xiao, Chuanming Zhou, Yongbo Peng, Alan J. Kaufman, Rebecca E. Plummer

Faculty Publications

© 2016 Elsevier B.V. The Ediacaran Period witnessed one of the largest phosphogenic events in Earth's history. Coincidently, some phosphorite deposits in South China are associated with the largest-known carbon isotope negative excursion (i.e., Shuram Excursion), suggesting an intimate coupling of the biogeochemical carbon and phosphorous cycles. However, the geomicrobiological linkage between these anomalies remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the phosphorite samples from the uppermost Doushantuo Formation in South China. Carbon isotope compositions of authigenic calcite cements and nodules in the phosphorites are as low as –34‰ (VPDB). Petrographic and geochemical investigations indicate that the 13C-depleted carbonates …

Efficient Algorithms And Applications In Topological Data Analysis, Junyi Tu Jul 2016

Efficient Algorithms And Applications In Topological Data Analysis, Junyi Tu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is a new and fast growing research field developed over last two decades. TDA finds many applications in computer vision, computer graphics, scientific visualization, molecular biology, and material science, to name a few. In this dissertation, we make algorithmic and application contributions to three data structures in TDA: contour trees, Reeb graphs, and Mapper. From the algorithmic perspective, we design a parallel algorithm for contour tree construction and implement it in OpenCL. We also design and implement critical point pairing algorithms to compute persistence diagrams directly from contour trees, Reeb graphs, and Mapper. In terms of …

RNAi-based genetically engineered (GE) crops for the management of insect pests are likely to be commercialized by the end of this decade. Without a workable framework for conducting the ecological risk assessment (ERA) and a standardized ERA protocol, however, the utility of RNAi transgenic crops in pest management remains uncertain. The overall goal of this study is to assess the risks of RNAi-based GE crops on a non-target soil micro-arthropod, Sinella curviseta, which could be exposed to plant-protected dsRNAs deposited in crop residues. Based on the preliminary research, we hypothesized that insecticidal dsRNAs targeting at the western corn rootworm, …

Distances Between Species In Food Webs: Evaluating Alternative Metrics' Predictive Power, Molly C. Johnson Jul 2016

Distances Between Species In Food Webs: Evaluating Alternative Metrics' Predictive Power, Molly C. Johnson

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

The complexity of ecological systems makes it difficult to predict how one species will react to the disturbance of another. Complex systems of species’ interactions can be described as ecological networks. One way in which ecological networks can give information concerning one species’ response to the perturbation of another is through the quantification of species’ proximity to one another in the network. In this study, we evaluate communicability, a topological metric that accounts for all of the direct and indirect interactions between species in a food web without additional information concerning the strengths of species interactions. Communicability is then compared …

Predicting Choices In Bumblebees (Bombus Impatiens): Learning Rules And The Two-Armed Bandit, Isabel Lucia Rojas-Ferrer Jul 2016

Predicting Choices In Bumblebees (Bombus Impatiens): Learning Rules And The Two-Armed Bandit, Isabel Lucia Rojas-Ferrer

Theses

Animals must make estimates about possible resources in order to choose the resource which will save them time and energy while conferring high energetic content. In order to make the most optimal decision, foragers must use various parameters to come up with an accurate estimate for each possible alternative. Learning rules allow us the possibility of analyzing which parameters animals may be using in order to make the best decision. We use compare known learning rules (i.e. Linear Operator Rule, Relative Payoff Sum Rule, Perfect Memory) and experimental data extracted from bumblebees (Bombus impatiens) subjected to a two armed bandit …

Induced Phytoextraction Of Lead From Contaminated Soils By Panicum Virgatum, Enhanced With Edta, Citric Acid, Benomyl, Propiconazole And Nitric Oxide, Adrianna E. Beavers

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Soil lead (Pb) contamination represents a major environmental and public health risk. Conventional Pb remediation methods are typically expensive and risk further environmental damage. Phytoextraction has emerged as an alternative heavy metal remediation method with the potential for reducing both economic cost and negative environmental effects. For this study, North American native switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) was chosen due to its ability to achieve high biomass yields across a variety of climates and environmental conditions. The switchgrass plants in this study were treated with chemical chelates, fungal suppressants, and nitric oxide (NO) donors with the intent of optimizing Pb …

A Molluscan Record Of Monsoonal Precipitation Along The Western Shoreline Of The Late Maastrichtian Western Interior Seaway, Scott Allen Ishler Jul 2016

A Molluscan Record Of Monsoonal Precipitation Along The Western Shoreline Of The Late Maastrichtian Western Interior Seaway, Scott Allen Ishler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Global warming in response to increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 concentration (pCO2) has generated concern over the effects of increasing surface temperature on the hydrologic cycle. Investigating precipitation dynamics during past ‘greenhouse’ intervals provide important insights necessary to better constrain potential future climate scenarios. The Late Cretaceous greenhouse is characterized by elevated pCO2 and surface temperatures, with a prolonged cooling trend which initiated in the late Campanian and an associated 4th-order sea-level regression recorded in the Western Interior Seaway (WIS), providing an opportunity to examine the hydrologic cycle under conditions of changing temperature and sea-level. …
